Principal’s Update:
We have been blessed to have local and national news coverage of our new cell phone policy. From KTUU, KTVA, and ADN to Newsweek, People Magazine, Yahoo and countless other news agencies in the lower 48, the story of our small school has gone viral! Our teachers report more focused and engaged students, while our passing periods and lunch time are filled with the laughter, joy, and friendly conversation of classmates and peers enjoying face to face interaction. Removing cell phones from the school day provides us with nearly 7 hours of distraction-free time to continue our focus on the spiritual, mental, moral and physical education of our students. In the end, we want all our students to succeed, so this policy change is helping us achieve that goal. At the same time, our school’s story is causing families and other communities around the nation to talk about the benefits and harmful effects of cell phones. In starting a national conversation, we are Lumen Proud!
Next week is a crazy week so please pay attention to the schedule above and the details below. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask me or Anne at the front office.
Virtue of the Week:
This week’s Sportsleader Virtue is VALOR: The strength to live with great courage in the face of danger. The opposite of VALOR is Fearfulness: the weakness to avoid doing what is right or the best due to feelings, pressure, or circumstances.
Campus Ministry:
The Campus Ministry Office is located in the school library,
students and parents are always welcome to stop by!
-
9th grade retreat will be Nov 15. Details will be sent home October 14th.

Please remember the following in your prayers this week:
-
Victims of violent crimes
-
Our national and world leaders
-
For the sick and infirmed
-
Peace

Pray for Peace. Act in Peace.
Archangel Sports Update #Lumenproud:
The High School Soccer season ended with the Region II Conference last weekend – the Archangels finished 5th overall, ending with a sweet 5-3 victory over the Holy Rosary Academy Knights (knocking them out of the tournament) way to go Archangels! It was a great season and we hope you’re as proud of your season as we are!
High School Girls Volleyball practice continues with their first game of the season scheduled for Monday, October 21st at Birchwood. The next action will be the ever-popular “Spiketacular” tournament on October 24th – 26th at the O’Malley Sports Center.
Junior High Basketball (boys and girls) starts MONDAY, October 21st. If your student is hoping to play, please contact Coach Warren at atheletics@lumenchristiak.org
Due to the gym floor still under reconstruction, basketball practice will be at the O’Malley Sports Center (11001 S Center Drive…by “Get Air” in south Anchorage). Bus service will be provided from the school to the Sports Center, all players should come to school in the morning with shorts to change into, water bottles and extra snacks to hold them over until 5p. Parents must pick up their students at the Sports Center, there will be no return bus service to Lumen.
Special note for families with SEAS 5th/6th graders ‘playing up’: the Lumen bus that leaves here at 3p and drops Lumen students at SEAS will then take the SEAS ‘playing up’ players and drop them at the Sports Center in time for 3:30p practice. Parents must pick up at the Sports Center, there will be no return bus service to SEAS.
Note that while basketball practice begins on Monday the 21st, we’re waiting for final confirmation from the Sports Center on which days of the week we’ll be able to have practice, beyond our Monday start date. Details will be shared as soon as we have them.
The first Junior High basketball games of the season will be just a few days after practice start, at the SuValley tournament in Talkeetna on October 25th & 26th. This is a unique, overnight away game/tournament for Junior High players who normally don’t get to travel. Details will be coming from Coach soon.
School Announcements:
NEXT WEEK
As noted above, next week’s schedule is completely crazy. The most important takeaways are:
-
Monday – Mass day (normally on Thursday – wear your best uniform & mass shoes)
-
Tuesday – Normal Tuesday class schedule of periods 1, 3, 5 & 7, but for a mere $2 donation for Breast Cancer Awareness month, your student can dress down – provided whatever they’re wearing is pink!
-
Wednesday High School – PSAT Testing. Please make sure your high schoolers get a good night’s rest on Tuesday and breakfast Wednesday morning.
Wednesday Junior High – Offsite service day to ensure high schoolers have a solid distraction free test zone. See below for Jr. High Service Day details.
Wednesday Jr. High & High School – EARLY DISMISSAL! To culminate a long morning/early afternoon of testing for high schoolers and busy work morning/early afternoon for 7th & 8th graders, we’re allowing early school dismissal at 12:30. For families who can pick up kids at 12:30, great! For those who can’t, there will be an extended study hall/work period until normal dismissal at 2:30p. This would be a great time for kids to get caught up on all outstanding work prior to the end of the quarter on October 24th & 25th.
-
Thursday – Wednesday class schedule of periods 2, 4, 6 & 7.
-
Friday – NO SCHOOL! All district school inservice day. (*See below for a great opportunity for our Lumen girls during inservice*)
Don’t hesitate to call the Office at 245-9231 if you have any questions about next week.
Junior High Service Day – Wednesday
In order to keep noise down and provide the best distraction-free-test zone possible for our HS PSAT testers, Jr. High students will be out of the school and participating in community service projects. *Note that we need all JH students here at 7:30a for a 7:45a sharp departure off campus.*
“Dream, Girl” – Inservice Opportunity – Friday
ALL of our Archangel girls and young women have been invited to attend a free event at Bear’s Tooth on Friday, October 18th from 1p-3p. Hosted by Alaska Permanent Capital Management, “Dream, Girl” is an event designed to educate and empower the next generation of female leaders in Alaska. “Dream, Girl” the documentary will be shown (watch the trailer here https://youtu.be/v3rj42IYFTU ) and afterwards attendees will have the opportunity to mingle and speak with some of the most powerful and successful female leaders in our state. Free Bear’s Tooth pizza will be provided! See the flyer below for more information.
Gala
Our “Under the Stars” 25th annual Gala will see our gym transformed into a spectacular setting. Our guests will be surrounded by swirls of silver and navy and stars will be twinkling all around. If you’ve never attended our gala, you’ll be amazed at how beautiful our space becomes. Lumen parent Michell Goodwin magically transforms the gym and hallway but lots of help is needed to make it happen! Sign up to help online – https://signup.com/go/BfFnxAD for one of the following positions:
-
Help prepare decorations in weeks prior to the gala (spots are located under 2/6 on the SignUp)
-
Decoration set up shifts on Friday 2/7 and Saturday 2/8
-
We are looking for a Decorations Chair to take over leading our gala decorations in the coming years- this includes setting the theme with the auction co-chairs and seeing the vision through. It would be a great start if the new decorations chair could shadow Michell this year and see how the magic happens!! If your interested or have questions, contact Danielle or Julie in the Gala Office-
