Principal’s Update:
Our year continues to fly by quickly! After a successful Catholic Schools Week and Annual Gala, we are approaching Spring Break in a few weeks! In the weeks to come, I hope you will help market our school for the upcoming Open Houses in March and April. Here’s how you can help:
-
Come out and support our school at the 2019 Fur Rondy Grand Parade on Saturday (see details below)! We will be handing out nearly 900 pieces of candy and invites to the Open Houses to the thousands of families that line 5th and 6th Avenues.
-
Remember that if you bring a prospective family to either of the Open Houses, we will credit $25 towards your SmartTuition balance (up to $100).
-
We also will be rolling out an extensive “boosting” marketing campaign on Facebook featuring Lumen families and students in coming days. We hope you will share those posts with all your Facebook friends and prospective families. We appreciate the assistance of the Van Tuyl, Thorsness, Crosby, Biss, Baker, and Turner families for your powerful personal testimonies and the Butcher family for pulling it all together and orchestrating the campaign.
-
Continue to direct interested families to our website. One of our parents, Shane Locke, has been busily updating items on the site, adding our promotional videos, and other enhancements to put the best foot forward in showcasing our school to the community. Thanks Shane!
It continues to be a pleasure and honor to serve this great community. Have a blessed weekend!
Virtue of the Week:
The Sports Leader Virtue of the Week is TRUST: The strength to confidently believe in someone regardless of the situation. Here is a Scripture verse about TRUST:
“Trust in the LORD and do good that you may dwell in the land and live secure. Find your delight in the LORD who will give you your heart’s desire. Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him and He will act.” Psalm 37: 3-5
Campus Ministry:
-
We are begin planning for our March 5th Mardi Gras Pancake Dinner. Volunteers will be appreciated! Donations of pancake mix, syrup, juice, bacon/sausage, and pancake topping will be appreciated!! Proceeds go to fund Campus Ministry activities and to help a local charity.
-
Ash Wednesday is just around the corner. Please join us for Mass Wednesday, March 6, at 9am
-
Each Friday, Beginning Friday, March 22, please join us for Stations of the Cross at 9 a.m. Students will transform each classroom into an interactive prayer station as they lead us through the last steps of Christ.
Prayer Spot:
Please remember the following in your prayers this week.
-
For those who have lost loved ones
-
All first responders
Any prayer requests that families would like listed here in Lumen News and also in the Lumen Prayer Book of Intentions may be sent directly to Mrs. Loeffler.
Archangel Sports Update:
While the Middle School Volleyball team lost a hard fought match for 3rd place in the Conference Tournament last weekend, they had an overall successful season. Many of the players were 7th graders and will be returning next year which bodes well for a strong team next year!
Co-ed Middle School Indoor Soccer starts next Tuesday, February 26th. There will be 2-3 practices per week from 3:30-4:30 with games on Friday. This is a relatively short season, approximately one month. Contact Coach Warren if you’re interested in having your 7th or 8th grader play. athletics@lumenchristiak.org
Both the Boy’s and Girl’s basketball teams dominated play last weekend with decisive victories over Ninilchik and Cook Inlet Academy. Come out TONIGHT to watch their last home games of the season against our archrival Birchwood Christian School. We’ll also be honoring our graduating seniors inbetween games. GO ARCHANGELS.
Student Spotlight:
No doubt – Archangels do amazing things both on campus and off. Congrats to the following student for off-campus excellence last week:
Sam Kaplan (8th grade), earned a rank advancement to Star Scout, as well as three new merit badges at Troop 129’s Court of Honor ceremony last week. Congratulations on your accomplishments Sam!
*Parents/Guardians – if your student has done something that deserves “Spotlight” recognition, please let Mrs. Gore at the Front Desk know!

Thank to everyone who took advantage of this, early re-enrollment allows us to more accurately budget and manage resources.

Spirit Wear
Don’t forget to check out what’s new in Spirit Wear at Alaska Serigraphics! Get your order in by next week – gear will be delivered to the school and sent home with your student. Reasonably priced and made in Anchorage! https://lumenchristi.akcustom.ink/.
Fur Rondy Grand Parade Float
For the second year in a row, Lumen Christi High School will participate in the 2019 Fur Rondezvous Grand Parade on Saturday, Feb 23rd. We are asking ALL AVAILABLE FAMILIES to come out and either walk alongside our “float” or even ride on it! This is an historical, memorable, and fun way to highlight and showcase our school to the Anchorage community. Thousands of people line the parade route along 5th and 6th Avenues downtown!!! We will show our school spirit and hand out candy and invitations to our March and April Open Houses at the same time! Show time is 9:45am at the staging area at the corner of 8th and C Streets downtown, near the Federal Bldgs and the Quality Suites Historic Downtown hotel. As an added challenge, the class/grade with the highest percentage of students participating will get a pizza party! As I told the students today, this is Moose’s Tooth pizza AND root beer!
National Honor Society Tutoring
The National Honor Society will be offering free after school tutoring every Wednesday from 2:30-3:30p. NHS members encourage any students with homework questions or who need help with math or writing assignments to stop in for additional help. This tutoring is offered in addition to what is available on Mondays in the Library.
SAVE THE DATE! “The Count of Monte Cristo”
Drama students are hard at work memorizing lines, blocking scenes and preparing for opening night! Mark your calendars for April 12th or 13th to catch their spring production of The Count of Monte Cristo featuring 2 of our graduating seniors, Trey Bernert and Shon Nagel.
The BIO Lab needs help!
The LCHS biology department is looking for a donation of a small mini freezer that can be set to -20 degrees F. Students will be using this to conduct upcoming DNA and genetics activities. Please contact Mrs. Brewer at dbrewer@lumenchristiak.org if you can help.
