Principal’s Update:
Well, we are off to an interesting spring semester and 2022! We ask you to pray for all those affected by travel delays (we still have many students and families stuck around the country) as well as those impacted by this recent COVID surge (we have several students and family members recovering from illness). I appreciate everyone’s flexibility and support as we started out mask optional but quickly transitioned back to masks as the community numbers increased. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and adjust accordingly. Our primary focus is to continue to keep our doors open to in-person learning despite the challenges we face.
With the colder temperatures, I ask parents to ensure that your son or daughter is “dressed for the weather” each day. I do greet quite a few students entering the school building in the morning and walking around the school without a fleece sweater, jacket, or other warming layer. Students with exposed skin (bare legs for ladies and bare arms for all) will be extremely miserable (and maybe even become hypothermic or frostbitten) in the event of an emergency. In November 2018, following the 7.1 earthquake, we had to evacuate the building and our students stood outside for over an hour while we ensured a suitable alternate location was safe to occupy. We also run monthly fire drills or other evacuation procedures, so please make sure your son or daughter is prepared and dresses accordingly each morning.
Good luck to our Archangel basketball teams who have scrimmages against Homer and Cook Inlet Academy this Friday and Saturday!

This month’s virtue is Prudence. Below are some helpful resources for parents looking to discuss the strength of Prudence at home: https://www.sportsleader.org/sites/default/files/newsletter-assets/Prudence%20Parent%20PDF%202.pdf
● Many thanks to our Junior Legion of Mary that meets every Monday at 1 p.m. for prayer and service. They have spent time making dozens of sandwiches for Brother Francis shelter. We have room for more members!
● Happy Birthday this weekend to Noah Tzetcoff and Isabella Surles!
● Our 10th grade retreat is February 18-20 at St. Therese Camp. Information will be sent out this week.
● St. Benedict Youth nights are Wednesdays 7-9 p.m. All are welcome!
Brother Francis Shelter is desperately in need of sandwiches. Beginning January 14th we will be making meat and cheese sandwiches each Friday from 1-2 p.m. Students are welcome to join us for an hour of service. We are requesting donations of bread, ham, turkey, and cheese slices. You can send them in throughout the week and we will refrigerate them until Friday each week. As needs arise, Catholic Social Services will contact the school and we will work on Fridays to meet them. Later requests might be for socks, gloves, or other items to make cold weather bags. We will let you know as we go. Thank you so much in advance!

Front Office News:
LUMENary Drive
And that’s a WRAP! With true heartfelt thanks for the generosity of so many, we’re thrilled to announce that we met both our financial and our fingers-crossed-timeline goals for this year’s LUMENary Drive! With an as-of-today total of $76,058.00 we’re officially at 101.41% of our $75,000 goal, which last year, took us until the end of April to meet. The generosity of Lumen families and community supporters is extraordinary. Thank You!
Parent Shout Outs
A huge shout out to the Anchorage Lion’s Club and to Cathy Medland, R.N. for organizing the free Vision and Hearing checks for our students and staff this past Tuesday! We are all so thankful!
Another huge shout out to Michelle Hohmann, Sherry Strizak, Bob Gunderson and John Mitchell for their amazing HOT LUNCH teamwork last semester! Thank you for picking right back up this week and continuing hot lunch for this spring semester! You are awesome!
Remind Text Messages
Just a FYI for parents, the Remind Team has recently notified us that they will be assigning new Remind phone numbers to SMS users. Feel free to save the number when you receive our next phone text/message from us! If you have never received school text messages, please contact: lchs@lumenchristiak.org and Mrs. Guzman will add you to the list!
Lumen Legacy
27th Annual Gala Fundraiser
Invitations will be out in the mail tomorrow; donations are coming in; the bidding site will open soon and the Gala Team has some amazing and oh-so-clever things planned to help make this the best event ever! Intrigued? You should be…..stay tuned!
This week’s Lumen Legacy spotlight is on Trey Bernert (2018). Up until last semester, Trey had been attending Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, but decided that path wasn’t his path! He left NAU, is working and saving money to open his own ice cream shop “Starry Sky Creamery.” Family reports it’s been a fun change to see Trey’s inspiration, initiative and most importantly his passion for this new path. And as Trey reports “Bill Gates dropped out his first semester of junior year as well so my company will be the Microsoft of Ice Cream.”
Trey, if anyone is going to succeed at this it’s you – we’re with you 100% (and hopefully will score some free samples if we’re in AZ and pop by to visit.) Cheers to you, and thanks for checking in!
Other alumni students and families – we’d love to hear from you! Email LCHS@lumenchristiak.org to tell us what you’re up to these days.
