Designed by students Emily Ross (Class of 2023) and Lane Crosby (Class of 2025), Lumen Christi’s crest reflects both the values of our school and our Catholic Christian tradition. With our school colors of blue, white, and red, the crest contains:
- The shield, on which all other symbols rest, representing the theological virtue of Faith, our first Core Value;
- The Bible, the Word of God, which inspires us to be the “Light of Christ” in the world;
- The Chi Rho and Alpha Omega, representing Christ and His being from the beginning to the end of all time;
- The Big Dipper from the Alaska state flag with its “eight stars of gold on a field of blue,” highlighting our geographical uniqueness in the Last Frontier;
- The winged shoe, a reminder that Lumen Christi seeks Excellence not just in mind and spirit, but in body as well, and finally;
- The wings and sword representing our Patron, Saint Michael the Archangel, to whom we pray daily to protect us.
Surrounding the crest is a ring reflecting the unity of our school Family, with the year Lumen Christi opened its doors. Completing the crest is a banner proclaiming our three Core Values: “Faith, Family, and Excellence.“
Our Mascot
Lumen Christi’s mascot is the Archangel. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (334-336) states, “the whole life of the Church benefits from the mysterious and powerful help of angels. From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession. Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life. Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God.”
St. Michael is the leader of all the angels and so earns the title, “Archangel.” He has four main responsibilities which include: waging ongoing battle against Satan and all other fallen angels; saving the souls of the faithful from Satan especially at the time of death; escorting the faithful to heaven at the time of death; and serving as a champion for all Christians. St. Michael is the patron saint of police officers; paramedics and the military but is called upon by many for protection in times of turmoil.
Our School Prayer
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle,
be our protector against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him we humbly pray;
and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God,
Cast into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits
who prowl around the Earth seeking the ruins of souls.
Amen.
