Principal’s Update:
Last Friday, our Class of 2025 freshmen spent the afternoon on retreat focusing on the “Last Seven Words of Jesus Christ.” They heard from a series of guest speakers from our Catholic community and reflected on sacrifice, understanding, compassion, endurance, and justice. As they reflected on Jesus’ last words before He died, students were called to consider some of the following questions:
“Where in my life do I need to give or ask for forgiveness?”
“What is something good I see in someone I struggle to care about?”
“When have I seen someone who needed help, needed a friend, or felt unloved? How could I have helped?”
“What things do I hold on to that keep me from surrendering to God?”
“How can I lay myself down for others?”
As I continue my Lenten journey, I intend to reflect on these questions as well. The retreat wrapped up with the students and many 9th grade families joining St. Benedict parishioners at the Lenten fish fry followed by Stations of the Cross. It was so awesome to see our freshman class volunteer to read many of the stations and it was even better watching our students showcase the Stations of the Cross that we do as a school community each Monday. Thank you to all the families who took time out of your busy schedules to join us and many thanks to Mrs. Loeffler, Mrs. Guzman, and our other retreat facilitators for leading our students!
This week has flown by! We are on day two of our Cognia accreditation review visit and things seem to be going very well. Thank you to the parents and students and School Board members who participated in the interviews over the past two days. We look forward to receiving the preliminary results from the review team on Friday morning, and I will try to share what I can with our community as soon as possible.
Tomorrow, we welcome the Archdiocese of Anchorage Juneau Archbishop Andrew Bellisario to our all-school Friday Mass at 7:45am. I’ve been consistently pleased with how our students dress up for our school Masses and tomorrow is no exception–please make sure your son or daughter looks their “Sunday best”!
I hope you have a blessed and safe weekend!

Spring Speaker Series!!!
Continuing the fall success of our annual Speaker Series, our illustrious School Board has planned and organized the next event scheduled for Saturday, April 23rd at 7pm here at Lumen. Details are below and posted on our Facebook page. We hope you will come join us in this social, informative, and family event in a faith-filled environment. Parents, please note the reception afterward sponsored by Matanuska Brewing!!!!
REQUIRED Parent Share Hour Opportunities
As we look ahead to the end of the year, we know some families are still short on Share Hours. Know that we’ll have a couple of excellent opportunities coming up to help you meet those requirements!
1. High School Prom set up, chaperoning and clean up (Saturday, 4/30.) We anticipate needing 4-5 parents for decorating during the day (noon-8pm); 3-4 for chaperoning during the dance (8-11pm); and 5-6 for clean up afterward. Click here to sign up: https://signup.com/go/XamiDmu
2. Annual GARAGE SALE! What was once just an idea to raise a few bucks has become a large, annual 2 day event that brings in anywhere from $6,000 – $8,000!! This year we’re planning on holding the event, Friday May 27th and Saturday, May 28th. This is a labor intensive event and even though school will officially be out, volunteer hours will count towards this year’s Share Hour requirement. We anticipate needing help on Thursday afternoon, May 26th setting up tables and sorting donations; Friday and Saturday helping keep tables organized and new items placed.
Donations: start your own spring cleaning at home! We will gladly be accepting items that are in considerably good condition starting Monday, May 23rd – NO EARLY DONATION DROP OFFS due to a series of events happening on campus.
3. It’s not on the calendar yet, but we anticipate there being a St. Benedict’s spring clean up event; in fact most parishes around town have one. If you’re a parishioner or congregant at another Catholic Church or House of Worship, know that serving in that capacity is another fantastic way to earn hours.
4. Finally, while it’s going to be a fantastic event in its own right, Principal Ross is offering Share Hours for attendance at the Spring Speaker Series (info above.) Come and support your school community, deepen your faith and have a cool beer afterwards (thank you Matanuska Brewing for your generosity in hosting the post-talk reception!)
If you’re short on hours, look for opportunities within your own ‘sphere of influence.’ Do you have an hour to help at Brother Francis Shelter or Clare House? Can you donate supplies for Friday Sandwich-Making with Mrs. Loeffler? Can you pick up trash as part of the City Wide Clean Up beginning on May 1st? Thank you for working to fulfill not just your hours, but to support our community in so many ways.

Principal’s Update:
We are so proud of our boys and girls basketball teams for their performance in the 1A Alaska State Basketball Championships. While I know both teams wanted to win a state championship, to have both teams finish 3rd place in the same year is nothing short of historical. A special shout out goes to Tim Bennett and Brenden Gregory, who were named to the 1A Boys All-State First Team and to Robert Wilcox who was named to the 1A Boys All-State Second Team. Brenden was also honored as the 1A Player of the Year, to my knowledge, only the second time a Lumen player has earned this recognition in our school’s history! On the girls side, Natalie Grubba was named to the 1A Girls All-State First Team and Amara Warren was named to the 1A Girls All-State Second Team. Our boys basketball coach, Adam Trombley, was honored as the 1A Boys Coach of the Year. Both Adam and Tom Gregory (the Lumen girls coach) have been exemplary as coaches, mentors, and role models for our young men and women and we are so grateful to have them in our community. Additionally, the following seniors were selected to play in the Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches Senior All-Star Games, on April 15th and 16th: Brenden Gregory, Tim Bennett, Robert Wilcox and Sabrina Warren. (More information will be coming out about this final opportunity to cheer on our players, so stay tuned.)
We congratulate all our All-State players–indeed all of our student athletes–as well as our wonderful coaches for a job well done all season! Nice work Archangels!
Please keep our Class of 2025 9th graders in your prayers as they go on retreat tomorrow (Friday) and spend some time in reflection on the “Seven Last Words of Christ.” We are excited that many of our 9th grade families will join their son or daughter as a part of the retreat at the St. Benedict’s Lenten fish fry in the evening followed by the Stations of the Cross. Parents have asked for more social occasions in a faith filled environment and this retreat was planned to facilitate an opportunity for our Class of 2025 families to come together. Many thanks to our Campus Minister, Mrs. Loeffler, our Admin Assistant, Mrs. Guzman, and others who have helped plan and organize what promises to be a special day.
Please also keep our school community in your prayers next week as we turn our attention to our Cognia Accreditation Review from Wed, Mar 30-Fri, Apr 1. The heavy lifting administratively has been done in advance by our school staff, and the review team will interview students, parents, staff members, and our School Board during their visit. We expect to receive the initial results from the review on Friday morning, and as soon as I am able, I will provide our community with details. I believe we are ready and prepared to demonstrate that our continuous improvement journey meets the high standards of accreditation in the areas of leadership, learning, and resources as outlined by Cognia. Please keep our school community in your prayers as we look forward to being reaccredited for another five years.
I am excited to announce that the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Anchorage Juneau, Archbishop Bellisario, will be celebrating our all-school Mass next Friday, April 1 at 7:45am. Please make sure your son or daughter looks professional as we want to put our best foot forward for our Good Shepherd. He is a very busy man, and we are blessed to have him join our school community for the Eucharistic celebration. All parents and families are most welcome!
Finally, please see below for the announcement of a challenge I highlighted during our 6th Annual State of the School in February: the design of a school crest! We tried to do this two years ago and COVID disrupted our efforts (as it did in so many other ways, as well). While I love our Archangel school mascot, a great Catholic school needs a great school crest, which symbolizes our emphasis on whole body development, captures the uniqueness of our Alaska location, and stands as a visual representation of our entire school community. I look forward to seeing the creativity and artistry from our students, staff, parents, alumni, and anyone else who wants to submit an entry. Details are below!

Principal’s Update:
Well, the opening round of the State basketball championships have resulted in both the boys and girls’ teams advancing to the quarterfinals. Boys play tonight at 4:45pm and girls play at 7:45 at the Alaska Airlines Center. We pray that they continue to do well and find themselves in the championship games on Saturday. We will continue to keep you posted on their progress and we hope that you will come out to show your support for our student athletes!
As we celebrate the our basketball teams, I want to also highlight the growing list of accomplishments of other Lumen students including:
Class of 2022 Seniors Jack Schroder and Liam Dupras, who play on the Anchorage Hockey Association’s team which won the 18U State Hockey Championship earlier this week.
Class of 2023 Junior Carson Blackford-Esary who plays on the Anchorage Hockey Association’s U16B team which won the 16B State Hockey Championship last week.
Class of 2022 Senior Jack Murkowski and Class of 2023 Junior Emily Ross who received an Honorable Mention for their video entry in the 2022 C-SPAN StudentCam competition. Over 1400 videos were submitted and only 150 videos received a prize. Jack and Emily will split the $250 Honorable Mention prize!
Class of 2024 Sophomore Brooke Ahrenholz who was selected as a National Youth Delegate to the 2022 Washington Youth Summit on the Environment at George Mason University. This summer, Brooke will join a select group of 100 other students from around the country to participate in an intensive, week-long study of leadership in environmental science and conservation.
Class of 2024 Sophomore Kateri Everard who participated in two Feisana (Irish Dance Competitions) at the beginning of Spring Break in Seattle. She competed in a total of 22 dance competitions in two days, and she came home with a suitcase of awards, including multiple 4th-2nd places finishes and THREE 1st place trophies! Kateri clearly had the blessings of the Irish with her!
Well done Archangels! We are so proud of all of our students. I always apologize if I fail to acknowledge and highlight the great work our students and families are doing, so please keep me or Mrs. Guzman informed so that we can give a shout out to our hard-working Archangels.

Principal’s Update:
Thank you to all in our community who rose to the occasion and answered the call for volunteers to support our hosting of the Regional basketball tournament over the next few days. I’m always in awe of the level of support and commitment of our parents and families! Thank you! Please come out to cheer our teams on to victory!
As we look beyond Spring Break and into Lent, we have populated our calendar above with opportunities for Stations of the Cross, all school Rosary, and Lenten Reconciliation Services. These events will take place, as per the schedule, during our 7th period elective time. So students will participate in these liturgical activities in lieu of study hall or any other assigned elective (riflery, yearbook, etc.). I ask that all students on early dismissal remain in the school building on these days and attend with the rest of the school. Exceptions will be granted to those students attending King Tech, jobs, or any other hard scheduling requirement. Our final Stations of the Cross will be during the 7th period on Holy Thursday, April 14th just prior to dismissal for the Triduum and Easter weekend.
After Spring Break, we will also renew a pre-COVID Lumen tradition of Friday Lenten Soup Lunches! These will start on Friday, March 18th and continue through Lent. As you will see, we will alternate between high school and junior high (opposite the Wednesday Hot Lunch schedule), so that all students have an opportunity for at least one hot lunch per week. By tradition, Lumen teachers prepare simple, meatless soups, chowder, mac and cheese, and other “crockpotable” items and sell bowls for $2-3 dollars. We usually have bread rolls as well. Monies earned go to support a local charity. In the past, these Friday meals have been a great way to focus our students on Lenten ideals of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
I have asked Anchorage Police Officer Butler, who is the Student Resource Officer at Dimond High School, to come and speak to our students about internet and social media safety. He will be at school during 7th period on Tuesday, March 29th.
Finally, it is hard to believe that we are halfway through the semester already. Our students have been doing great and deserve a week off. On behalf of our entire school staff, have a blessed and safe Spring Break! We will see you at the basketball tournament and then again on March 14th!

Principal’s Update:
I hope our students enjoyed their extended long weekend, especially with our added snow day on Tuesday! Even though this has been a short week, it’s been a busy one!
I know our thoughts are on Spring Break, which starts at the end of next week. But we can really use our entire community’s support and assistance as we host the Peninsula Conference regional basketball championships March 3-5. We have nine teams total, boys and girls, coming from all over Alaska to participate, so we want to put our best foot forward and be gracious and welcome hosts. We could use your support in three main ways:
- Commit to signing up to man the concession stand or main gate, host a meal for the hospitality suite, serve as an announcer, or any other countless tasks necessary to run a successful tournament. Many hands make light work, and your hours go to support our athletic program and earn Share Hours. Make it a family affair and your Lumen student can earn Faith in Action hours too! You can access our support needs here: https://signup.com/go/qJHJHgB
- Commit to coming out to support our teams as they play. Our first games are Thursday night (times below) and we have a theme of “BLUE OUT.” So wear blue and come out to cheer our teams on to victory! Both teams are poised to earn the regional championship and again earn berths to State scheduled for March 16-19th.
- Attend Mass with our teams at 7am on Thursday, March 3rd in St. Benedict’s church to start off the tournament in prayer. Show our support for our young men and women by celebrating Mass with them before we start our school day and the tournament begins. Help us pray for our Archangel athletes!
Thanks in advance for your continued commitment of time, talent, and treasure. On to victory, Archangels!

The final numbers are (almost) in – just one more outstanding invoice. Once that’s in we’ll be able to provide you with an exact figure, but know that we’re on track to raise the most amount EVER in the school’s Gala Fundraising history! Considering that last year we raised the “then” most amount ever ($110,000) – we’re over the moon to announce that this year we’ll close the books out at just over $113,000. So much of our success comes from the dedicated Gala Team, but we couldn’t do it without the generosity and participation of our amazing friends, families and supporters like you. There are no other words than simply – thank you.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 11th, 2023 when we’ll return to a fun but elegant in-person event! The Gala Team has already started planning!
