Principal’s Update:
What a wonderful week of celebrating the 16 graduates from our Lumen Class of 2022! From a parade through Anchorage, to a beautiful and moving Baccalaureate Mass, to the graduation ceremony itself, we loved having the opportunity to recognize and highlight the individual and collective accomplishments of our graduates. We pray for them and wish them well as they go out into the world to make a difference and to change the world!
As we look towards the end of the school year, please know that while we are “over COVID,” COVID is not over us! Cases are on the rise, both in the community and in our school, so please continue to screen your child for symptoms and keep them home if necessary. We have plenty of at home test kits to distribute to anyone who wants them. Let’s all work together to keep each other safe and healthy!
Finally, we will be closing out our two active surveys on Monday. If you have not already submitted your feedback, please do so this weekend! The Cognia “perception” survey provides us on feedback on our Purpose and Direction, Governance, Teaching and Learning, and Resource and Support Systems and can be accessed here: https://bit.ly/3jZwtFZ
The Lumen Athletics survey provides us information on your level of satisfaction with our sports programs and can be accessed here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LumenAthletics
Both of these surveys will be used to help us improve as a school to ensure we are providing the best possible experience for all our families.

Coming to Lumen in 2022-23 – DRONES
We’re thrilled to announce receipt of a $3,000 Grant Award from ConocoPhillips Alaska. The grant funds will be used to purchase high quality drones and teaching modules for use by the science department. We’re so grateful to ConocoPhillips Alaska for providing us with “hands on” learning opportunities for our students! While undoubtedly they’ll see flying drones as fun, we see it as a way to develop STEM skills like conceptual physics, mathematics and computer programming while emphasizing creativity, problem solving, communication and collaboration.

Class of 2022 Senior Celebration Parade
The Senior Celebration Parade is a tradition born during the pandemic, when social distancing expectations made us get creative in celebrating our graduating class. On Monday, May 2, at 5pm, we will gather a car convoy (along with our two Lumen buses) starting and ending at the Lumen parking lot and drive through Anchorage on a preset route to each of our Seniors houses (or other locations). We will personally deliver a graduation yard sign and honk, beep, and otherwise embarrass the Class of 2022 graduate in their local neighborhood. With 16 Seniors this year, the convoy will take a bit longer than normal, we anticipate about 2-3 hours. We know gas prices are rising, but for the past two years, our Seniors and their families have come to appreciate our school community’s support in this new tradition. Come on out on a Monday night, take a drive through Anchorage, and celebrate our Class of 2022 graduates! Route and directions will go out to families on Friday, April 29th!

Principal’s Update:
In continuing our 40 day Lenten journey, our students had the opportunity to take part in the Sacrament of Reconciliation this week. Our Lenten Reconciliation Service consisted of prayer, reflection, Adoration, Rosary, and an examination of conscience. Many thanks to the priests who came to hear our confessions (Father Bart, Father Tom, Father Scott, Father Dan, and Father Arthur) and to Mrs. Loeffler for organizing this special, moving Lenten tradition.
You may have seen a Remind message over the weekend sharing that our Cognia accreditation visit went very well. I fully expect we will be reapproved for reaccreditation for another five years. I will have more details at our Principal-Parent Forum at 7pm on Monday, April 25th. I hope you can make it either in person or virtually.
As we look towards Holy Week next week, I encourage you to participate in several events. First, on
Tuesday, April 12th, Mrs. Spillers will be providing details about our Close Up trip scheduled for spring 2023. We have had a considerable amount of interest already for this educational opportunity, so you’ll want to attend if you are thinking about going on the trip.
Second, our final Stations of the Cross as a school community is scheduled for 1pm on Holy Thursday, April 14th. Parents, siblings, and families are welcome to join our students as grade level cohorts walk the path of Christ’s crucifixion through our school building. We will dismiss for the Triduum and Easter at 2pm following Stations, as Good Friday and Easter Monday are no school days.
Finally, our school families are invited to participate in the annual Good Friday Faith Walk on Friday, April 15th. Students are out of school anyway, so what better way to join others than on a journey of faith! You can walk with us from St. Benedict’s starting at 8am, or walk with your own parish, or you can meet up with the rest of the Archdiocese downtown at the Performing Arts Center (PAC) for the last three Stations. Mrs. Bouton has organized a viewing of “The Passion of the Christ” for interested high school students and families later in the day, so please see details below and join us for the day! Students will earn Faith in Action hours for participating and parents will earn Share Hours as well.

REQUIRED Parent Share Hours & Faith In Action Opportunities
As we look ahead to the end of the year, we know some families are still short on Share Hours. Know that we’ll have a couple of excellent opportunities coming up to help you meet those requirements!
Volunteers are needed to help with the following events:
1. Lumen Alumni parent Joe Law is hosting a BBQ picnic on Saturday, April 16th from 12-4pm at the Delaney Park Strip to help raise money for the Ukrainian Red Cross. He is seeking any students and families willing to help serve food and/or pick up trash during the event. This is not a school sponsored event, but if you are interested in volunteering, call Joe at 907-338-0129 to learn more details.
2. “Friends of the Library” is holding its big fundraising gala for the first time in two years—fingers crossed! It’s Saturday, April 23 at Anchorage Marriott. We’re following the PAC’s Covid policies: proof of vaccination or proof of recent Covid test, and on-site rapid testing for anyone who doesn’t have proof. Staff and volunteers will be masked and tables will be set farther apart than usual, with fewer people per table”. Students would assist with coat checks, selling raffle tickets, or following bids. Hours are 5:30-10 pm and a pizza dinner is provided. Please see Ms. Gore if interested
3. Catholic Social Services Charity Ball is in need of a few volunteers! Are you looking for volunteer hours or a way to help the community? (Parent Share Hours)
May 6th from 4:30-6:30pm will be set up at The Hotel Captain Cook if we had 5-10 volunteers we will be able to put the chair covers on quickly and set up all of the silent auction items
May 7th from 4:30-10:30 pm we are in need of 4 volunteers to help with coat check at The Hotel Captain Cook. We ask that all volunteers on May 7th wear black and white semi formal clothing.
If you have any questions or would like to sign up to help at Charity Ball, please contact me atkmullin@cssalaska.org or 907-717-3093.
4. High School Prom set up, chaperoning and clean up (Saturday, 4/30.) We anticipate needing 4-5 parents for decorating during the day (noon-8pm); 3-4 for chaperoning during the dance (8-11pm); and 5-6 for clean up afterward. Click here to sign up: https://signup.com/go/XamiDmu

This is a labor intensive event and even though school will officially be out, volunteer hours will count towards this year’s Share Hour requirement.
