Principal’s Update:
What an awesome Catholic Schools Week so far! From Monday’s Mass with the Archbishop to our 3rd Annual State of the School to yesterday’s delivery of food and other goodies to local fire and police stations, our students, staff, and faculty have been showcasing what Catholic schools are all about: Faith, Family, and Excellence! Please remember two other highlights this weekend:
Saturday: We invite all to our All Archdiocese Parish Basketball Night at 5pm. Our boys basketball team is 10-2, so come on out and cheer them on to victory over the Point Lay/Kali Wolverines (Qavikk). Game starts at 5pm with fun halftime activities for the kids! Anyone wearing Lumen spirit wear or with a parish bulletin ticket gets in for free!!
Sunday: Please consider attending the 10:30am Mass at St. Benedicts to say thank you for their generous 18-years of support to our school community. Students in attendance should wear their Mass day uniform. We need student volunteers for lectors, altar servers, hospitality, gift bearers, and extraordinary ministers. Plug in your Super Bowl crock pots in the morning, come to Mass with us, and then settle in to watch the Rams beat the Patriots!
We also wish our Lady Archangels good luck and safe travels as they head to Nenana for a tournament!

Archangel Sports Update:
Junior High volleyball continues with another Jamboree this Friday (2/1) from 3p-6:30p in the Lumen Gym. Our newest Archangels are both doing great, and are having a great time doing it!
Outstanding news from the Boy’s basketball trip to Kodiak last weekend (1/24-1/27) – three solid wins! While there, the team spent time with students from St. Mary’s, Kodiak’s Catholic elementary school. Way to be great role models, Archangels.
Back at home, both the Girls and Boys succumbed to Nikolaevsk on Tuesday night (1/29). Wednesday night (1/30) saw the Girls fall to Kalskag in overtime, but the Boys prevailed with a decisive win after exceptional play in the 4th quarter.
The Girls left this morning for a tournament in Nenana – the entire school, students & staff – turned out to cheer them out the door and onto the road! We wish them safe driving there & back as well as successful games and a great time together as a team. Go Lady Archangels!
Mark your calendars for the upcoming games:
- Feb 2nd – Port Lay, 5p, Boys only (Girls in Nenana)
- Feb 5th – Sand Point, 5:30p-Girls, 7p-Boys
- **Feb 6th – King Cove, 5:30p-Girls, 7p-Boys (Note: this game was initially scheduled for the 4th but moved due to travel schedules)
- **Feb 7th – Wainwright, 5:30p-Girls, 7p-Boys
- **Feb 8th – Anaktuvuk Pass, 5:30p-Girls, 7p-Boys
**LOCATION CHANGE**: Games on the 6th, 7th & 8th will be held at The Arctic Rec Center (4855 Arctic Blvd.) due to Gala preparations in the Lumen gym.
Student Spotlight:
Our students do amazing things both on campus and off. Congrats to the following for off-campus excellence in the past week!
Tommy Simono (9th grade) who skis for Service High School competed last weekend in the Besh Cup Ski Race down in Soldotna, and who will ski for the final race in the Cup this weekend in Fairbanks. Pending the outcome of that race, Tommy could be part of the AK Junior National Team! Congratulations to him on his season so far, and we’ll be rooting for him this weekend.
*Parents/Guardians – if your student has done something that deserves “Spotlight” recognition, please let Mrs. Gore at the Front Desk know!

Thursday will be a Friday “A” schedule (students attend periods 1-3-5) and Friday will be a Friday “B” schedule (periods 2-4-6.)
Conferences will run from 3p-7p on Thursday and 1p-4p on Friday. They occur on a ‘first-come-
first-served’ basis in the Student Room located next to the Office. Parents, if you’re unable to make either date, please email Ms. Gore at the Front Desk (lchs@lumenchristiak.org) who will forward the message on to your student’s teachers so alternate arrangements can be made.
Last week we included a notice here about a potential service disruption for Verizon users with our “Remind.Com” messaging system. This issue has been resolved between Verizon & Remind, so no worries if you’re a Verizon user – you’ll still get messages direct to your phone (email) without issue.

There will be a basket wrapping party this Saturday, Feb. 2nd from 2p-5p in the Lumen Library. No crafty skills necessary, just be willing to help wrap with cellophane paper and attach bows! There’s also more ironing of table linens to be done, drop in for any amount of time you’ve got and iron here, or take a tub home and do it in front of your favorite Netflix binge.
There are still more jobs to fill leading up to, and the night of the event, especially in disbursement at the end of the night. Check out Signup.com for ways to help: http://signup.com/go/rfKTQMC

Volunteers needed on Sunday, Feb 3rd, from 2-6pm at the church, wear old clothes and bring a facemask. Principal’s Update:
Our school has been very busy as we approach Christmas! Here are some highlights:
-
Throughout Advent each day, we have joined together as a community around our “Jesse Tree” in the front of the school. After prayer and Scripture reading, we place ornaments on the tree representing the people and events in the Bible leading up to the birth of Christ.
-
Our 9th graders went on a day long retreat last Friday, spending time reflecting on serving others and finishing the day wrapping care packages at Brother Francis Shelter.
-
On the same day, our junior high students made “Beanie Boxes” of hygiene materials, gloves, hats, and hand warmers and personally delivered a dozen boxes to Bean’s Cafe.
-
All of our students participated in an Advent Reconciliation Service last week, with an opportunity for prayerful reflection, adoration, and confession before Christmas.
-
In support of the Knights of Columbus Polar Bear Plunge team, four of our students and couple of faculty members jumped into Goose Lake last weekend to raise money for the Special Olympics. The St. Benedict’s Knights chapter placed in the top 10 of all fundraising teams, earning nearly $6,000 for the Special Olympics program!
-
Finally, our junior high boys basketball team won 2nd place in the Alaska Christian Schools Activity Association (ACSAA) tournament, while our girls team earned FIRST PLACE honors beating out Birchwood Christian Academy in the final game. Way to go, Archangels!
On another special note, our high school boys basketball team participated in our first ever SportsLeader Jersey Ceremony this past week. In this emotionally moving and prayerful event, our Dads, Moms, and loved ones proudly presented their son/nephew with their sports jersey after telling the gathered crowd about what makes their athlete special and unique. We had some good laughs, told some good stories, shed a few tears, and learned more about the God-given talents and qualities of each member of our boys team. We look forward to hosting a similar ceremony for our high school girls basketball team when we return from Christmas break. We also wish both of our Archangel high school basketball teams a successful and blessed season!
Based on requests from several parents, we are hosting a “Principal-Parent Forum” on Thursday, January 10th at 6:30pm in the school library. All parents are invited to attend to discuss current and future policies, procedures, and programs at Lumen and ask any questions of me you may have. I look forward to seeing you there!
Finally, we want to say farewell to Agustin and Sofia Londono, our 7th grade international students from Colombia, as they return home in early January. We knew they were only here for a semester, but they made lasting friendships and connections with all of us here at Lumen. They will be missed greatly by students and staff alike. Safe travels and blessings to them and a special thanks to Brent and Anita Bristow for hosting them here in Anchorage.
On behalf of the staff here at Lumen , we wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a blessed New Year! Thank you for your support!

National ‘best practices” show that extended family members and friends are excited to help support the mission of Catholic education. To date, 31 families have sent a total of 55 personal notecards through the school, and recipients of these personal notecards have responded with a total of $4,000 It’s working! If your student came home from school the day of the earthquake wearing something that didn’t look familiar, please return it to Mrs. Gore at the Front Desk so it can be returned to its owner.

Principal’s Update:
We live in interesting and exciting times! I feel confident that we have tried to communicate with you as much as possible over the past week after the earthquake on the 30th. I do not have much to update you on other than it is good to have our students back in school. The earthquake (and the daily aftershocks–enough already!) did not diminish the laughter, smiles, and cheer in the classrooms, library, and the hallway. It is a blessing to start each day in Advent prayer together in the front foyer and hang ornaments on our Jesse Tree. And it is good that we are approaching the end of the semester, finals, and a well-deserved Christmas break.
As most of you know already, the Jingle Bell Run scheduled for Dec 8th has been cancelled, so we will not be meeting up at the UAA Student Union on Saturday. This is unfortunate, but I am pleased to report that we are the #3 top fundraising team with a total of $515 raised to support the Arthritis Foundation! Thank you for all your support and we will turn our attention on the Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge scheduled for Dec 15th. We hope you can join us at Goose Lake!
Finally, as you will see below, our personal note writing campaign by students for the LUMEN-ary Drive is meeting with great success. Thank you to all the parents who have sent in addresses of friends and family and encouraged your son or daughter to write a personal notecard. Thank you to the students who have written these notes. This past two weeks, we received two $1000 checks and several $50-250 ones from loved ones–touched by the personal note of our students–to support Catholic education at our school! That is awesome! We hope you will continue to prayerfully consider your own donation to the LUMEN-ary Drive and solicit others to do the same! Thank you!
LUMEN-ary Drive:
LUMEN-ary Drive Update: Good news! We are more than half-way to our goal of $40,000! As of Wednesday, Nov. 29th, we have cash-in-the-door of $22,645. Thank you to all who have supported this important campaign to date. Please remember that a successful LUMEN-ary Drive is critical to our school’s financial stability. Since we did not sell “Gold Cards” this year we’re asking each school family to voluntarily cooperate in raising at least $500 to help balance the school’s budget. While you are not obligated to pay this additional amount, our hope is that you will ask extended family and friends to support Lumen Christi’s mission of offering a “rigorous Catholic education in a Christlike environment.” One of the ways to encourage greater participation in the LUMEN-ary Drive is to have your son/daughter send out a personal note to extended family and friends along with LUMEN-ary Drive information. National ‘best practices” show that extended family members and friends are excited to help support the mission of Catholic education. To date, 31 families have sent a total of 55 personal notecards through the school, and recipients of these personal notecards have responded with a total of $3,650. It’s working! Let’s work together to achieve our goal of raising the $40,000 by Christmas! Thank you!

Be a Santa to a Senior
No, not the senior class, but the seniors in our community! Each year there are many elderly residents in our community for whom the holidays pass without a visit from anyone, let alone a gift. The “Be a Santa to a Senior” organization seeks to change that and would like our help. Simply stop by either of the locations below and pull an “ornament of need” off of the tree. Purchase the gift and return it (unwrapped) by December 10th to the tree where you pulled the ornament from. For more information, visit BeaSantatoaSenior.com or call 907-277-4663. Thank you for going the extra mile for someone in need, in our community.
Tree locations:
• Home Instead Senior Care 440 W. Benson Blvd.
• Dr. John D. Frost, Lake Otis Medical Plaza 4100 Suite #302
