Principal’s Update:

Well, I am back after a bit of an absence! Here are some (lengthy) updates:

We received 94 responses on our COVID vaccination survey, which is an exceptionally high number. Thank you for your responses! According to the results, 72% of our students are vaccinated with 28%notvaccinated. Wedonotplantodoanythingdifferentinourprotocolsbasedonthisnumber, but it does give us an idea of how many students we could expect to quarantine in the event of a COVID positive in our community. Please consider joining us for our October 7th Speaker Series from 7-8:30pm in our gym (see attached flyer below). The event stems from a school board discussion centered on several of our Strategic Directions statements found here: https://lumenchristiak.org/about/faithbased-education/ and which your survey results from a couple of years ago helped build), including:

• More social occasions in a faith-filled environment

• Create more opportunities for Lumen parents to directly engage with one another, both in faith formation and socially
• More deliberate commitment to the development of the six attributes of a Lumen graduate

Your School Board has been working hard to put this together. This inaugural event’s theme is titled “Navigating your Calling” and the evening will feature a six person panel discussion with members of our Anchorage Catholic community as they reflect on the choices made in their professional, vocational, and spiritual journeys. At this point, panel members include:

• Dr. Kati Magnuson- pediatric doctor
• Deacon Kurt Adler- Deacon at SEAS and Subaru repair shop owner
• Father Leo- priest and pastor of St. Patrick’s Parish
• Derek Espelland- FBI Trauma Unit
• Brigit Reynolds – Refugee Assistance (RAIS) coordinator with Catholic Social Services
• Melissa Branch- Owner of Big City Engineering

All are welcome and the event is free of charge. Whether you are a student looking ahead to the future, an adult actively working but thinking of switching careers, or someone ready to be inspired and learn from notable members of our Catholic community, we hope you will join us for this informative and educational event. Due to COVID, masks will be required when in the facility. The event will also be live-streamed on Lumen Christi’s Facebook page for those not able to attend in person.

A gentle reminder to 9-11th graders that the PSAT will take place on Saturday, October 16th from 8am-12pm at Our Lady of Guadalupe, instead of being offered during the school day. This is for two primary reasons: 1)scheduling it on a Saturday gives us back precious content area class time that would otherwise be used to administer a standardized test and 2) scheduling it on a Saturday makes it more realistic for those who will later have to sleepily trudge to Grace Christian or UAA to take the ACT or SAT on a Saturday morning in their junior and senior year.

Finally, we pray for our junior high and high school students as they embark on two days of retreats this week as well as our junior high soccer players participating in a tournament this weekend. Please keep them in your prayers. Go Archangels!

Prayer isn’t just another good thing to do; it’s absolutely necessary if we want to know God’s will in our lives and draw closer to him.

• We will be holding training for altar servers and Extraordinary Ministers of Eucharist the week of October 4. Students please let your Theology teachers know if you are interested!
• Confessions are offered every Monday morning beginning at 7 a.m. in the Archangel Chapel
• Daily Mass is offered every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 7 a.m. in the Archangel Chapel

NEED VOLUNTEER HOURS?

Calling eager teen volunteers who need to log some service hours! We are meeting at Holy Spirit Center: 10980 Hillside Dive, Anchorage, AK 99507 on Monday 9/27/2021 after school at 2:30PM to sweep gravel out of entryways and shovel it into buckets for winter use. Please contact Amy Locke at amy@acsalaska.net if you can make it. It will probably be 1-2 hours of work, depending on how many kids can come. Please bring a broom, a shovel and a smile!

Time, treasure, talent ~ thanks to a combination of these three gifts, one of our Lumen families, the Ortegas, will making homemade tamales and delivering them to the school! If you missed out last year (or were not here last year) – trust us when we say – you don’t want to miss these!
$20 will get you a dozen chicken with green salsa; pork with red salsa; cheese & jalapeno, or a combination of all three. Place your order by emailing the Front Office by Monday, September 27th for delivery to the school on either Sunday, October 3rd between 2p & 3p or Monday, October 4th between 2p & 3p. All proceeds to benefit the school.

SENIOR PICS & PAGES

Every year the Yearbook staff must submit a predetermined amount of pages on a set deadline to Jostens, our Yearbook company. For this first page submission deadline, we are kindly requesting to have all Senior Pages submitted to us by October 29, 2021. As a reminder, the Senior Page is the full page that parents traditionally create for their graduate along with a little message of well-wishes and prayers. The pages can be created in JPEG or PDF and when completed should be sent to our Yearbook email: Yearbook@lumenchristiak.org We also hope that you have had time to take Senior photos of your Graduate over the summer. Fall would be another good time to take it if you haven’t! The photo does not have to be taken by a professional photographer, though it is preferred. If you have a good camera, you may take the photo yourself. Either way, send us a 300 dpi quality photo that is in focus (not blurry) and has a nice background.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

NHS will be sponsoring a canned food drive for the St. Francis Food pantry, running from September 13-24th. Students will receive a spirit day by donating 10 cans during “Hunger in Action” month to support the food pantry. Students should bring their canned goods to their advisor.
