Registration for ACYC (Alaska Catholic Youth Conference) 2019 is now open. ACYC is a gathering of Alaskan teens, young adults, parents, pastoral administrators, and parish staff members. It features both Alaskan and national Catholic musicians and speakers who will help teens live as missionary disciples in their communities, whether that be rural or urban. The week will include Eucharistic liturgies, reconciliation, workshops, a concert, and yes, fun! As Pope Francis tweets: “A Christian is never bored or sad. Rather, the one who loves Christ is full of joy and radiates joy.” Teens who journey to ACYC will return radiating the joy of renewed faith and a strengthened desire to live as God’s disciples! Junior High and High School athletes had a mini-meet at Hanshew on Tuesday, May 7th and per usual, did outstanding. Hats off to Archangels Andrew Butcher, Sophia Helzer, Daniel McConnell (all Junior High) and Garrett Renfro, Juan Ramirez, Natalie Grubba, Jack Murkowski and Evan Powell (High School) for keeping Lumen front and center at these meets! All athletes will compete again at the Christian School Conference Meet on Saturday, May 11th.

Student Spotlight:
Wow – Big shout out to 7th grader Ryan Solberg, class of 2024 who competed in the Alaska Piano Competition at UAA this weekend and took second place in the intermediate level! We’re always so proud of our Archangels and love to showcase their off campus talents. Way to go Ryan!
School Announcements:
Field Day 2019:
A separate email went out on Tuesday to announce this – but in case you missed it….Friday, May 17th we’ll have Field Day after school from 12:30 – 2p. While this is a deviation from our normal Friday dismissal time of 12:30, we hope that as many students as possible will stay and participate. We want this to be a fun way to close out the year and give everyone a chance to blow off steam before finals start on Monday. If you and/or your student have other obligations that day we would ask that you alert us that they will be leaving at 12:30, otherwise we’ll assume they will be staying until 2p. CHANGE: This will be a casual day! No need to come in uniform with a change of clothes!! Just send your student(s) with lunch and cash (if you want) as we’ll be selling off also selling off the last of our concession snacks. Highlight of Field Day? The First Annual “Staff vs. Students” Kick Ball game! Who would you put your money on?!
West Point Anyone?
What do an astronaut, poet, president and former head of the CIA/current US Secretary of State* all have in common? They’re all graduates of the United States Military Academy, also known as West Point. Curious to know more? Then head over to the BP Energy Center on Saturday, May 11th, at 1p where a representative will talking with interested students and their families. (*Buzz Aldrin, Edgar Allen Poe, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Mike Pompeo.)
Prom Thank You:
Mrs. Michelle Goodwin would like to extend her sincere thanks to all parents who came out to help decorate, chaperone & clean up for Prom last month. The venue looked amazing and the kids had an awesome time – thank you for helping create lasting memories for our Archangels!
Class of 2020 Seniors:
Summer and Fall are great times to get your Senior Portraits taken. When we return for the 2019-2020 School Year, your senior portraits will be due on Thursday October 31st.
National Honor Society Tutoring:
Yes there is still tutoring available!! The National Honor Society is still providing free tutoring after school on Wednesday this week and next, from 2:30-3:30. This tutoring is offered in addition to what is available on Mondays in the Library.
2019-20 Share Hours:
Here’s a great way to get a jump on next year’s Share Hours (parents & students alike.) Every year our Jewel Lake neighbor (and Lumen supporter) True Value Hardware places nearly 5,000 American Flags in the yards of homes in the Sand Lake and Jewel Lake area. They’ve been doing this for almost 10 years and it’s greatly appreciated by the community. (They get calls at the store every year about how much people love it.) They’re looking for volunteers who can help distribute flags this year – if you can, please join them on July 3rd at 7a in the True Value parking lot – coffee, hot chocolate & treats provided! For more information, call Shannon Barry (Lumen graduate, class of ‘05) at True Value, 248-9211.
