Principal’s Update:

Congratulations to three graduates from our Class of 2019, each of whom received $500 scholarships from the Knights of Columbus via their annual essay contest. Congratulations to Julianne Estes, Shon Nagel, and Megan Flaherty!

Finally, Archbishop Etienne will celebrate Baccalaureate Mass with our graduating seniors from Lumen as well as St. Benedict’s on Monday, May 6th at 7pm in St. Benedict church.  All of our families have recently received an invitation to this special and emotional event. In addition to celebrating the Eucharist, we will transition the Light of Christ from the Class of 2019 to the Class of 2020 and offer prayers over our graduates.

And our entire community is invited to our Class of 2019’s graduation and commencement on Thursday, May 9th at 7pm in the gym.  We hope you will consider attending either or both of these community events.

Virtue of the Week:

This week’s Sportsleader Virtue is ASSERTIVE – The strength to be characterized by bold and confident action.

Campus Ministry:

  • Congratulations to Noah Cruz, Julianne Estes, Jaime Martin, and Cali Rybicki, our newly commissioned Extraordinary Ministers of Eucharist!

  • Congratulations to Karin Helgesen,  Kaiya Thorsness and Mrs. Alvarez on their Confirmation Tuesday night!

  • Registration for ACYC (Alaska Catholic Youth Conference) 2019 is now open. ACYC is a gathering of Alaskan teens, young adults, parents, pastoral administrators, and parish staff members. It features both Alaskan and national Catholic musicians and speakers who will help teens live as missionary disciples in their communities, whether that be rural or urban. The week will include Eucharistic liturgies, reconciliation, workshops, a concert, and yes, fun! As Pope Francis tweets: “A Christian is never bored or sad. Rather, the one who loves Christ is full of joy and radiates joy.” Teens who journey to ACYC will return radiating the joy of renewed faith and a strengthened desire to live as God’s disciples! For registration and more information, check out: http://bit.ly/2019ACYC.

  • 11th Grade Retreat is tomorrow Friday, May 3 (on campus) and that evening they’ll complete a Service Project by assisting at the St. Benedict Parish Agape Dinner from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Please meet in the Lumen Christi gym at 5 p.m.

  • Next Thursday, May 9 we will have our May Crowning during our school Mass. Students, please bring in one flower to place in Mary’s Grotto.

  • All high school students are invited to St. Benedict Youth Group silent retreat May 10-12. Students return early for Mother’s Day.

  • All Middle School students are invited to St. Benedict Jr. High Night night Thursday 6 p.m.

  • All High School students are invited to St. Benedict Youth Group Wednesday’s at 7 p.m.

Prayer Spot:

Please remember the following in your prayers this week.

  • Our senior class as students prepare for finals and graduation

  • Teens who are struggling with faith

  • Return to a reverence for all life

  • For Josh Van Tuyl and his family as they mourn his grandmother’s death, and for the repose of her soul

  • All first responders

  • All families in crisis

Any prayer requests that families would like listed here in Lumen News and also in the Lumen Prayer Book of Intentions may be sent directly to Mrs. Loeffler.

Archangel Sports Update:

Our Middle School track stars had a mini meet on Tuesday afternoon  – congrats to our athletes Andrew Butcher, Mackenna Bessler, David Sliwinski and Daniel McConnell all of whom placed either 1st or 2nd for every event entered! A few of our High Schoolers ran as well – again with superb showings – shout out for the nearly all first place finishes for Garret Renfro, Frankie Locke, Caleb Furneri and Evan Powell.

Our High Schoolers head to Kenai on Saturday for their first Invitational meet, and Middle Schoolers have another mini meet on Tuesday from 5p-7p at Hanshew Middle School. Think good thoughts and fleet feet for our Archangels, and look for results here, next week.

School Announcements:

SCRIP:

Today’s the deadline for ordering gift cards (Graduation? Mother’s Day?) on this last SCRIP order of the school year. Place your order online at www.shopwithscrip.com and cards will be delivered to the office by Tuesday, May 7th. If you’re setting up an account on shopwithscrip.com for the first time, Lumen’s enrollment code is: B968B67E44853. Questions on the Scrip program can be directed to kap.celine@gmail.com. Thank you for supporting Lumen Christi’s fundraising efforts by purchasing gift cards through Scrip!

Class of 2020 Seniors:

Summer and Fall are great times to get your Senior Portraits taken! When we return for the 2019-2020 School Year, your senior portraits will be due on Thursday October 31st.

2019-20 Uniforms:

Our vendors school uniforms will remain the same for next year – Lands End and Tommy Hilfiger. We know there were issues with Tommy this year but have been reassured that they are ordering 175% overfill for most requested items so there should be no back orders or delivery delays like there were this year. They also indicated that they’re doing a major overhaul of their website for an improved online shopping experience. If you have any concerns or feedback (general or specific), please send them to lchs@lumenchristak.com and I’ll make sure those are shared with them.  They’ll get a second shot at our business for 2019-20 but if difficulties persist, we’ll look for a second vendor for 2020-21.

National Honor Society Tutoring:

Don’t forget – the National Honor Society has free after school tutoring every Wednesday from 2:30-3:30p. NHS members encourage any students with homework questions or who need help with math or writing assignments to stop in for additional help. This tutoring is offered in addition to what is available on Mondays in the Library.
