Principal’s Update:   

Congratulations to our Class of 2023 9th graders who earned an entire week of casual/”dress down” for being the highest percentage participation for the Stuffing Drive!  Together, our school collected over 700 boxes of stuffing for the St. Patrick’s Thanksgiving Food Delivery! Way to go, Archangels!

Congratulations as well to all the dozen or so students who earned a casual day for no tardies for the month of October, including the mighty Class of 2021!  The entire junior class had NO tardies for the month of October, and so earned an entire week of casual dress just before Thanksgiving! Each month, we renew this challenge for our students, so be on time each day and dress down!

Now that our gym floor is finally complete, our students have enjoyed lunchtime “recess” each day and our co-ed junior high basketball team earned a tight 11-10 victory over Faith Lutheran in the first official game on the new floor.  We also hosted our first ever Rosary Rally and Jersey Ceremony for our high school basketball teams. Father Tom blessed the gym floor, we prayed the Rosary, heard words of encouragement and legacy from Mr. Daniel George, Lumen Christi Class of 2005 (and team member of our 2004 State Championship Team), and coaches handed out jerseys while recognizing our boys and girls teams.  It was a memorable evening of prayer and tradition!

Thanks to the 20 or so parents who attended the Principal Parent Forum.  I really enjoy the opportunity to hear thoughts and ideas and share some updates with everyone.

I encourage you to provide input to us through our Parent Climate Survey.  It is less than 5 questions and literally takes about 3 minutes. The survey can be found here:   http://bit.ly/ClimateParent.  Right now, only 12 parents have provided feedback; we are looking for 40, so please click on the link and give us your perspective.  These surveys are used as evidence in our reaccreditation process with Cognia (formerly AdvancEd) scheduled for Spring 2021.

Finally, all Lumen students have been invited by Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish to celebrate their Feast Day Mass at the  Dec. 8th 11:30a.m. Mass. Mrs. Alvarez is offering extra credit for Spanish, and I am offering service hours and a casual/dress down day for students who attend in Lumen Mass day attire.  Students should be at OLG by 11am!

LUMENary Drive Update:

!!FIFTY TWO!!  That’s the magic number of the week….fifty two…percent that is! With 120 donors having generously contributed to date, we’re at $25,907.81…..officially over half-way to our annual goal of $50,000.  Of the 120 donors, 25 of them are Lumen families. That represents 21% of the overall donors and 45% of the total Lumen family population. While we challenge every Lumen family to give $500 (or raise it by reaching out to family and friends) any amount is welcome and we’d love to have 100% family participation. So thank you to everyone who has contributed so far, and now’s the time to do it if you haven’t!

Virtue of the Week: 

This week’s SportsLeader Virtue is COOPERATION: The strength to work together toward a common objective.  The opposite of DIVISION: The weakness of creating disagreements within a group which typically leads to tension, hostility and/or separation.

Campus Ministry:

The Campus Ministry Office is located in the school library, students and parents are always welcome to stop by!

• Advent begins our Liturgical year, so Happy New Year! In preparation for Christ’s birth, we hold our Jesse Tree prayer service each morning from 7:45 to 7:55 in our main hallway. Please join us – it is a great way to center your day on Christ.

• Next Tue, December 10 grades 7 – 12 will have our Advent Penance service from 11:20 – 1:10 in the Church. All are welcome to join.

• Also next Tuesday Dr. Cheryl White from LSU will be giving a presentation during 7th hour. Dr. White is a scholar on the Shroud of Turin. She will delve into recent findings and current testing on the Shroud. All are welcome to join us in the Upper Room at 1:15 on Tuesday, December 10.

• Don’t forget to join our team for the Polar Plunge!  The proceeds go to support Special Olympics in Anchorage. The last 3 years we had great student participation. Parents welcome too! Register at https://specialolympicsalaska.org/events/polar-plunge

Archangel Sports Update #Lumenproud:

Both the Jr. High Boys & Girls Basketball teams were successful in taking down Anchor Lutheran on 11/26, then came together as co-ed team in a narrow win over Faith Lutheran on 12/4.  The final tournament of their season starts tomorrow with the Boys vs. Anchor Lutheran at 4p, and the Girls taking on Birchwood Saturday at 10a. Play will progress through Saturday afternoon depending on the outcome of those first games.

The High School Basketball season kicked off with a Rosary Rally and Jersey Ceremony on Tuesday night, thanks to all who came out in support of our teams. As Coach Trombley said as he handed out the boy’s jerseys “  .” We look forward to the upcoming season!

Student Spotlight: 

Parents – we’re proud of our Archangels both on campus and off! If your son or daughter deserves a shout out here in Lumen News, please let Mrs. Gore at the Front Desk know.

This week’s special shout out to hockey goalie & Lumen’s own Class of 2022 Jack Schroder who stopped a final penalty shot and saved his team from going into sudden death overtime in last weekend’s U16 B League Turkey Shootout Tournament. Thanks to the save, Jack’s team clinched the championship title. Way to go JACK!

School Announcements:

Lumen Christmas Cards

Each year the school sends out a Christmas card to friends, families and supporters of our school. Several parents have asked if they could purchase the card to use as their own. If you’re interested in this year’s card which features artwork from our own Mikayla Terry, class of 2020, stop by or call the Front Office at 245-9231 to place an order. $20 for your first 50 cards, $10 for each set of 25 after that.

National Honor Society – Hot Chocolate Drive 12/9 – 12/13

The National Honor Society will be sponsoring a hot chocolate drive to benefit the local Food Pantry. Please have students bring hot chocolate, either large bulk or individual packs to their advisor next week, Monday – Friday.

NHS will deliver all collected items to the Food Pantry on 12/13. Any student who wishes to be a part of the donation team and then work at the Food Pantry from 12:30 – 3:00 on the 13th should get a permission slip from Mrs. Craig.

Finally, NHS continues to offer free, after school tutoring in any subject on Thursdays from 2:30-3:30 in Mrs. Craig’s classroom with members of the NHS.  This is a great opportunity for quiet, one on one school work time for your student. All are welcome.

25thAnniversary Gala, February 8th, 2020

Donation letters went out to local businesses this week and donations are starting to come in!  We need more PROCUREMENT CALLERS and you earn DOUBLE SHARE HOURS for this gala job.  Please let us know as soon as possible if you can help with this. Class of 2020 Senior Memory Pages

Now that your Senior Portraits have been submitted, it’s time to get working on your Senior Memory Page. Please adhere to the following due dates:

·  If you and your family opted to create your own Senior Memory Page, it is due Tuesday January 21st. This must be a digital file that is submitted to Mrs. Spillers. Price is $100.00. If you have yet to pay, please do so at the Front Office.

·  If you have chosen to have the Yearbook Staff create your Senior Memory Page, photos for your page are due Friday December 20th. These photos must be in digital format and submitted to Mrs. Spillers. Price is $150.00. If you have yet to pay, please do so at the Front Office.
