Merry Christmas everyone! See you in 2020!
LUMENary Drive:
Last week we were at 60% of overall financial goal reached, this week we’re at 60% of total Lumen Family participation! That’s. Amazing. Way to go, dedicated Lumen families. Remember that while we challenge every family to give or raise $500, any amount is welcome and we’d love to have 100% family participation. You can give easily on line through our website at https://lumenchristiak.org/giving/. Select “click here” in the LUMENary Drive information; enter an amount, then click on “Continue” under “New Giver” (or sign in if you have an established on-line giving account.) It’s that easy! There are so many reasons our school is amazing and the collective generosity of all who attend here is but one more. Heartfelt thanks.
Virtue of the Week:
This week’s SportsLeader Virtue is SELF-CONTROL: The strength to direct your emotions and desires for a greater good. The opposite of self-control is: UNRESTRAINT: The weakness of not being able to control one’s emotions, impulses, words and actions.
Campus Ministry:
The Campus Ministry Office is located in the school library, students and parents are always welcome to stop by!

Archangel Sports #Lumenproud:
The 2019 Lumen Christi Invitational High School Basketball Tournament started TODAY! This pre-season tournament features both girls and boys teams from Wasilla, Birchwood, Grace Christian and Nanwalek. Our girls played a tough first against Wasilla at 1p today and our boys take on Grace Christian at 7p tonight. The Friday line up = girls vs. Grace Christian at 3p and boys vs. Nanwalek at 7p. The tournament will wind up Saturday with both teams going up against Birchwood, 2p for our girls and 4p for our boys. There’s nothing better than holiday basketball so come out and cheer on our athletes!
Speaking of the tournament, we still need a bit of help taking tickets and selling concessions throughout the weekend. Please sign up and support the team here: https://signup.com/go/GoHkPcy
Finally, if you purchased an ARCH card during Back-to-School Registration in August (Arch cards get you into all home basketball games for free), those were distributed and your student should have brought it home…check their backpack if you haven’t seen it!
If you’re looking for more basketball fun after Christmas, the Annual Lumen Alumni Basketball games are on Saturday, December 28th. Anyone who ever attended Lumen is encouraged to come and join in, regardless if they played on the teams or not! Women play at 2p and men at 4p. This event is free to the public. Bring your parents (they would love seeing you play again) and your kids (do they know you ever played?).There will be door prizes and great T shirts for the alumni players. Come enjoy!
School Announcements:
Rifle Team
Mr. Ross is organizing a rifle team starting Monday, January 6th through early April. Practices will be after school 2:45-4:30pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. After learning proper safety and the three shooting positions, we will be practicing with air rifles in our gym (don’t worry, we have safe target backstops!) and competing against teams from across the nation–all through “virtual match” scoring. Mr. Ross will hold a parent meeting at 4:30pm after practice on January 6th and provide more details.
Spring Intensives/Electives
There’s still time to sign up for Spring Intensives & Electives.
*Art Elective with Mrs. Rachel Androski. Classes are held during 7th period on Tuesdays only, students attend Study Hall on Wednesday. Classes are open to all grades and begin on Tuesday, January 7th, run for all 18 weeks of the semester and end on Tuesday, May 18th. There is a $360 fee associated with this class which pays for Mrs. Androski’s time and all professional grade materials & supplies.
*First Aid/Safety/CPR Intensive with a certified trainer from Frontier Safety & Supply. Upon completion of this 2 week/4 class intensive, students will hold an American Safety Health Institute Certificate for CPR/AED & First Aid valid for 2 years. Classes are held on January 21/22 and January 28/29. Classes are for high school students only. There is a fee associated with this class but is dependent upon how many students enroll in it. Details to follow.
*Culinary Arts Intensive – back by popular demand! Lumen alumni mom Carol Sturgulewski will once again offer her kitchen skills for another 7 week/14 class program. Classes are open to grades 8-12 and run Feb 4 – March 25th. There is a $45 fee associated with this class which covers the cost of all fresh groceries used during class.
*Hunter/Gun Safety with Lumen parent/NRA member Clint Renfro. This is the same class taught by the Alaska Department of Fish & Game and upon completion, students will hold a Lifetime Basic Hunter Certification. Dates are still to be determined but will likely start after Spring Break. This class is open to all grades and *may* have a small fee (less than $20) associated with it.
Fees for any/all classes can be added to your Smart Tuition Account. Please let Mrs. Gore know by the end of the semester if your student wishes to enroll in any of the above.
