Principal’s Update:
It’s been busy at the school as we kicked off our electives (Debate, Art, Yearbook) and our inaugural intensive (Basic Automotive Skill Building) this week. For Debate, we’re excited to welcome back Mrs. Kelli Reed, long term LCHS substitute who will be coaching the debate team as they learn to think on their feet, develop sound and logical arguments, hone research skills as well as increasing their understanding that there are often multiple valid sides of an argument on most important issues.
For Art, we’re thrilled to welcome Mrs. Rachael Androski who studied Fine Arts at both the University of Iowa and the New York Fashion Institute of Technology. Mrs. Androski also teaches art at our sister school, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and we can’t wait to start displaying artwork in the hallway from our her students!
Mrs. Spillers is once again heading up our yearbook team, and student photographers have already been spotted all over campus snapping pics of students for yearbook pages. And finally, many thanks to Kurt Adler, owner of A+A The Shop, Alaska’s Independent Subaru Service for volunteering his time to teach automotive basics to 10 high school students. Staff are already hoping that when it comes to the oil change and tire rotation class, that they’ll be able to offer up their vehicle for demonstration purposes!

Upcoming Junior High Retreat
Junior High will have an in-school retreat on September 19th & 20th. Lumen will charge your SmartTuition account $25 to cover costs associated with the two day retreat including lunch & snacks, bowling, Anchorage Museum entrance fee and rental vehicles. We also ask that students bring in 2-3 no longer used t-shirts for a service art project.
Thursday, September 19th:
Students will attend mass and participate in service and art projects. Students should arrive at school in their uniforms, or Friday polos to attend mass; they can change into Lumen wear (sweatshirts or t-shirts) after mass if they want. Students will participate in a variety of service and art projects for the remainder of the morning. Lunch and snacks will be provided. After lunch, we will walk to Jewel Lake Bowl and go bowling as a group. Pick up is 2:30 pm.
Friday September 20th:
Students will be off campus for Friday, but we will meet at school at 7:45. They are able to wear Lumen wear and layers are encouraged. Friday morning the students will work at the Anchorage cemetery doing routine lawn maintenance/clean up. After a hot chocolate and snack break, the students will walk to the museum for the afternoon. Please provide a packed lunch (no microwaveables please) for your child. Pick up is 2pm.
Chaperones are needed for our Friday activities. We are also looking for extra rakes and carpet cutters for our time at the cemetery. If any parents are interested in volunteering or have questions, please email Mrs. Craig: acraig@lumenchristiak.org.
National Honor Society
The National Honor Society is now accepting applications to those eligible students for the 2019-2020 school year. If your student has been at Lumen for more than 3 semesters and has a cumulative GPA greater than a 3.5 they may be eligible to join the NHS. The National Honor Society supports multiple ongoing community service opportunities and would enjoy new, interested members. Please see Mrs. Craig for any questions or for an application. Application deadline is Monday, September 16th. The induction ceremony will be held on Tuesday Oct 1st at 6pm in the library.
Community Service Opportunity
Lumen students have a reputation as hard working, conscientious and polite volunteers so it’s no wonder requests for help come in from all over the community! Our first request one of the year arrived this morning from the Salvation Army who is in need of volunteers for their 20th Anniversary “Teddy Bear Tea” fundraiser on Saturday, October 6th. There are two shifts that need volunteers: morning (7a – 11a) and afternoon (11a-3p.) Please call Anna Woods at 223-5359 (cell) or 345-7010 (office) if you can help. Community Service Opportunities are a great way for families and students alike to start fulfilling annual Share Hour obligations!
Thanks – have a great rest of week and weekend.
