Principal’s Update:
What an inspiring first day back to school on Monday! Our students and staff started the year off right in a celebration of Mass with Father Tom, Father Michael, parents, friends, and parishioners of St. Benedict’s. Following Mass, two of our Seniors, Taline Markossian and Ned Kretchik, honoring a Lumen tradition, led their fellow students in a procession and brought the Light of Christ back into the school. Father Tom said a short prayer and then went around the school blessing students, teachers, and our classrooms. Check out our Facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/lumenchristiak/ for photos of this great start to the year!
Another Lumen tradition that I would like to keep alive is Principal’s day with Seniors and Juniors at the Alaska State Fair. I would like to schedule Friday, September 2, for this trip, but I will need some assistance from Junior and Senior parents to help drive and chaperone. Please let me know if you would be willing to assist. We would leave the school around noon and return to Anchorage around 7-8pm.
The Archangels soccer team continues to roll forward this season, with an awesome 4-2 win over Tri-Valley School on August 19th and a disappointing 7-2 loss against Cook Inlet Academy in Kenai on August 20th. This week, the Varsity team plays Holy Rosary on August 23rd, Birchwood Christian School on August 25th, and Cook Inlet Academy on the 27th. Our hard-charging Junior High team has their first game on the 25th against Birchwood. We also have one student, Sofia Main, playing Tennis and proudly representing Lumen! So if you are looking for something to do on seemingly endless rainy August afternoons/evenings, come on out and support Lumen Sports! You can see the sports schedule, highlights, and results online at www.lumenchristiathletics.com. Go Archangels!
For those of you who wonder what happens during “home room” at the start of school, the students and teachers start every morning with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. Teachers also have been using this time to pass morning announcements and to emphasize the proper dress code and uniforms with the students in class. The students have been arriving to school looking sharp and professional, so we appreciate your efforts in this area.
I will also ask students, parents and other Lumen family members to drive carefully when dropping off or picking up. Please adhere to the speed limits (especially along 82nd Avenue) and watch for other vehicles, and most importantly, our students.
You will see the notice below, but I look forward to seeing everyone at Back to School night on Friday, August 26th. Classroom rotations will start at 6pm and a BBQ dinner will be served at 7pm. Come on out and join me, teachers, students, Father Tom, members of the Lumen School Board, and the entire Lumen family on Friday! Those in attendance will receive a Lumen Christi window decal to show off your pride as you drive around Anchorage. Go Lumen! Blessings,
Principal Brian Ross
Back to School Night: Back to School Night will kick off at 6pm on Friday, August 26th, followed by a BBQ at 7pm. Arrive at 6pm to pick up your child’s schedule and visit each class, beginning with your child’s 1st period class. Be sure to stick around for a delicious BBQ provided by an alumni family.
Need to Add or Drop a Class?: Students needing to make schedule changes should see Mrs. Brewer no later than Friday, September 2nd. You may direct questions to Mrs. Brewer by emailing her at dbrewer@lumenchristiak.org or stop by to see her before or after school.
Gold Cards: Everyone has been busy selling their Gold Cards to help raise money for our school. Next week we will evaluate which class has sold the most so far and they will win a prize. Keep up the great work and Thank You!!
Ride needed from Lumen to St. Elizabeth’s: Lumen teacher, Mr. Palumbo is looking for someone who would be willing to help drive his daughter to St. Elizabeth’s. Please contact him at bpalumbo@lumenchristiak.org for more information or if you are available to help with this.
PVO President & Vice President Needed: We are currently looking to fill our PVO President and Vice-President positions. Please contact the office if you are interested or have questions about either of these positions.
Parent Share Hours: Each family is a member of the PVO and has 40 parent share hours to complete (20 hours for single head of household) each year. At least 50{d4876d85bca45a190b33d6c696456a399841af28eb325342d1f9ba09483f3a19} of those volunteer hours need to be conducted on fundraising efforts such as the Gala, Concessions, the Archangel Attic, and etc. Parent share hours help bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost to educate each child…keeping our tuition as low as possible. Each family is responsible for logging their own share hours in the parent share hour book located in the office. If you are unable to come into the office, please email Mrs. Estes a detailed account of your parent share hours and she will gladly enter them for you. In April, share hours will be assessed and any incomplete share hours will be billed at $35 per hour to your ledger in May. PLEASE NOTE: Parent share hours do not include community service you may have done outside the Lumen community.
A Reminder from the Yearbook Team:
Summer is a great opportunity to take great Senior photos at your favorite location. The colors are gorgeous, the leaves are lush and the photographer is not overbooked and has patience. Nothing but good reasons to schedule your Senior photos now to have them ready when the Yearbook team needs them much later in the year. Then you won’t have the nice outdoor display.
Fred Meyer Community Rewards-Time to Renew: Please take a moment to register your Fred Meyer card so that Lumen Christi can receive rewards from your shopping, a super easy way to help Lumen raise funds. Catholic Student Exchange: Most of you may remember the 3 Guatemalan students that came to Lumen last fall for 8 weeks. They each had a wonderful time and had a great experience in a Alaska while attending Lumen Christi. If your family is interested in hosting a student from Guatemala from mid-October through Mid-December or If you’d like additional information, please let us know.
