Murdock Partners in Science Grant: This year Mrs. Brewer was nominated to receive the Murdock Partners in Science Supplemental Grant. This is a continuation of the summer research grant she received from them for the past two summers. The grant is to provide for purchasing materials to conduct research at Lumen Christi and to enhance our science laboratory. As a matching grant, the foundation required that the school raise $2000 which they will match with $7000. We would encourage anyone who would like to contribute to donate to this worthy cause. Donations can be sent to the school and marked Partners in Science Donation. If you would like more details about this grant, please email Mrs. Brewer at dbrewer@lumenchristiak.org.
Raffle: The PVO is coordinating a raffle to help raise money. Since the Scrip program was a new fundraiser for Lumen this year, it didn’t raise the funds we projected so PVO decided to end the year with a raffle. If all tickets are sold, the school will earn 20,000.00. Each student will bring home raffle tickets today to sell and the drawing will take place on the last day of school. The prizes are: 2 RT tickets anywhere Alaska Airlines flies, $1000 gift certificate for orthodontia treatment with Dr. Koropp, and a Denali Flyer Flightseeing trip for 2 with K2 Aviation. According to rules of the permit, all raffle tickets must be accounted for, please do not lose them.
Senior All-Star Basketball: Johanna Estes was selected to the Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches Senior All-Star Basketball Game on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 2:30pm at Dimond High School. Come cheer her on!
Spirit Week: Spirit Week starts Monday!! Below are the themes for each day. Should your student choose not to participate in one of the day’s themes, they should wear their school uniform. Here are the details for Spirit Week:
- Monday: Famous Movie Icon Day-Students should dress as icons from famous movies. The icon has to be somewhat recognizable. Students cannot come to school in a plain outfit claiming to be some obscure movie character.
- Tuesday: 907 vs. 90210-students can dress like an Alaskan (907), or like someone who lives in Beverly Hills (90210). Alaskan clothing would be stereotypical Alaskan clothes, such as xtra tuffs, Alaska Grown hoodies, or flannels. Beverly Hills clothing would be considered higher end looking clothes, such as dresses/skirts, dress shirts or polos. (Hoodies that promote alcoholic beverages or over 21 themes such as Alaskan Amber will not be allowed).
- Wednesday: Sports Day-students should wear sports clothing such as jerseys or sweaters of any sports team.
- Thursday: Throw Back Thursday-students should dress up as someone from another generation, i.e. someone from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s or 90’s etc.
- Friday: Black Out vs. White Out-Students should wear either all black or all white.
Penny Wars: The annual competition has already started!!! Here’s how it works…there are 7 jars in the office one for each class plus one for the teachers. The goal is for each class to collect as many pennies as possible but watch out because other classes can put silver coins in another grade’s jar which will count as negative. The contest will end at precisely 2:45pm on Friday, April 25th The event gets very competitive each year!!! Which class will win this year? The winning class will get to dress down on final exam days. The money raised during this event will go towards the Senior’s Graduation and our Science Day at St. Elizabeth’s.
Concession Stand Chairperson: PVO is looking for someone to take over chairing the concession stand for the 2016-17 school year. Please let us know if you are interested in taking over this important PVO position or if you have any questions.
Science Day at St. Elizabeth’s: On April 20th, Lumen Christi’s Chemistry and Forensics classes will spend the day at St. Elizabeth’s conducting various science experiments and projects to all grades.
