Principal’s Update:  A big thank you to all who volunteered time, talent, and treasure and helped make the Gala a great success!  Our students did an especially awesome job; I received dozens of compliments about how well our students humbly served our guests and how they showcased the high quality of our school.  Thanks, too, to the parent volunteers who made the night go very smoothly and the clean up seamless.   What a wonderful family we have here at Lumen and thank you again to everyone who made this event possible!

On Monday, we recognized the hard work, commitment, and accomplishments of our academic honor roll students.  Congratulations to all our award recipients!   We also presented Nathan Marshall (Class of 2018) with the “…And Then Some” Award.  This award is given to that student, junior or senior high, who goes above and beyond that expected of Lumen students.  A selfless servant, Nathan exemplifies daily our Core Values of Faith, Family, and Excellence.  He is quick to volunteer to serve at Mass, play music at the State of the School and the Gala, and proudly represents Lumen in everything he does.  Well done Nathan!

We again wish both the boys and girls basketball teams success as they compete in Homer this week for Regions.  Go Archangels!

I’ll close my update with two requests:

  1. At the Gala, we raised $8000 towards our “Fund a Project,” an electronic keypad access control system and security camera for our front door.  This is fantastic!  We are within $1100 of our goal.  Would anyone be willing to donate $20, $50, $100, or even more to help get us there?  Contact Mrs. Estes if you can help.
  2. I once again encourage parents to complete the AdvancED annual parent survey at:  https://goo.gl/R0JdWC.  To date, about 40{d4876d85bca45a190b33d6c696456a399841af28eb325342d1f9ba09483f3a19} of our families have completed the survey.  Our goal is 80{d4876d85bca45a190b33d6c696456a399841af28eb325342d1f9ba09483f3a19}.  We look forward to your feedback on our school.  Thanks to those who have already filled it out!

God Bless You!

Spring Open House:  Our Spring Open House will be held on March 7th from 6-8pm.  Please share this information with your friends and family.  Don’t forget about our Incentive Discount Program:  A family or household who has referred a student to Lumen Christi will receive a $500 incentive discount per student referred who has successfully enrolled at Lumen Christi, up to $2500 per school year.  Referred families must specify the referral at the time of registration for the current family to receive this discount.

Ash Wednesday:  Lumen Christi will attend Mass Wednesday, March 1st for Ash Wednesday.  To accommodate this we will need to adjust our bell schedule for Wednesday and Thursday as follows:

  • Wednesday, March 1st:  We will follow a Thursday schedule.
  • Thursday, March 2nd:  We will follow a Wednesday schedule.

Re-enrollment Packets:  Re-enrollment packets have been sent home with your children and if you have any questions, please let me know.  There have been a few questions about enrollment fees which are usually highlighted on the financial agreement which will come out later.  As a reminder of what those fees are, there is a commitment fee of $100.00 and the book & technology fee which is $300.00 (after March 31st the commitment fee will increase to $250.00).

Tuition Assistance for the 2017-18 School Year:  Lumen Christi High School works with Covenant Tuition Services (CTS) to determine eligibility for financial aid. Families who wish to apply for financial aid, please click on the following link:  http://cts-tuition.com/app/lumancak  The deadline for applications is July 15th, 2017.

Lumen’s Great Gatsby Gala:  A huge thank you to all of the parents and students and their families who helped with the Gala…all help was greatly appreciated!!

  • Volunteers Needed:  We are in need of volunteers to take home linens to wash.  Please contact Karin O’Connell at gala@lumenchristiak.org if you can help with this.  This is another way to complete share hours for those who still have hours to complete.
  • Post Gala Meeting:  While the Gala is fresh in our minds, please think about what worked, what didn’t, and bring any ideas you have for next year. Our Post Gala meeting will be on Thursday, March 23rd at 6:30pm in the Library.

Scholarships:

  • Pioneers of Alaska Scholarship:  Scholarships are available for graduating seniors who have a family member who is/was a member of the Anchorage Pioneers of Alaska (Men’s Igloo #15 or Women’s Igloo #4).  See Mrs. Brewer for the forms.
  • Additional Scholarships:  Please visit the following link to additional scholarships: http://www.asdk12.org/counseling/scholarships/

Parent Share Hours:  Just a reminder to update your completed parent share hours in the book.  We have seen many families actively volunteering but your family log sheet doesn’t reflect that.  You may also email Mrs. Estes your completed hours and she will be more than happy to record them for you.  In April, parent share hours will be assessed and any incomplete hours will be billed to your account at $35 per hour.  Please let Mrs. Estes know if you have any questions.

Sports News:

  • JH Indoor Soccer:  We are still looking for a coach, please let us know if you are interested.
  • HS Track:  HS Track will begin on Tuesday, February 28th, practice times TBA.
  • JH Track:  JH Track will begin on Monday, April 10th, practice times TBA.

Pick. Click.Give:  When you choose Pick.Click.Give to benefit Lumen Christi High School, your money supports the education programs that have prepared our students for college and life. Your generous donation ensures that our students continue to be equipped with academic excellence and faith.  Thank you for prayerfully considering Lumen Christi on the list of your Pick.Click.Give. donations.  Your link to Pick.Click.Give.

State of the School:  For those that missed the State of the School on January 30th, we have posted our slide presentation as well as a short report of the evening on our website.  At the end of the presentation, I provided a list of 10 things that friends of Lumen can do to help light the path to the future for our school.  That list is:

1) Talk about the 4 great things about our school to anyone you know

2) Attend the Community Mass on Sunday, Feb 5th

3) Invite a prospective family to the Open House on Mar 7th

4) Volunteer to serve as a Parent/Student Ambassador

5) Volunteer at the Archangel Attic

6) Volunteer with Friday afternoon Faith in Action opportunities

7) Volunteer to sell concessions at our home games

8) Support the Gala (attend, invite others, volunteer, find donations)

9) Donate to the LUMENARY Drive and invite at least 5 of your friends and family to do the same

10) Commit to SCRIP, Fred Meyer Rewards, Pick.Click.Give., and Amazon Smile

PVO President & Vice President:  If you are interested in becoming our PVO President or Vice President, please see Mrs. Estes or Mr. Ross.  If you think you might be interested but have questions, please let us know.  We need to start looking forward to the next school year and it would be great to have PVO leadership in place before the end of the school year.

Next Scrip Order Date:  The next order deadline will be March 6th (right before Spring Break) at 3pm.  If you’d like to place an order or create an account, please contact Jessica Estes at the front office and she will help you out.

Campus Ministry:

  • Success!  Thank you so much to our Campus Ministry Team and students who organized and helped serve the Mardis Gras Pancake Dinner on Tuesday.  Also thank you Parishioners and school families who supported us.  We were  able to raise a good amount for Clare House and Ministry teams
  • Please join our Parent Discussion Group this Sunday, March 5 from 4:00 – 5:45 in room 109. This week’s topic is “Authentic Friendships”
  • Grades 10 and 12 are creating small prayer walls for Lent. These walls are a reminder to offer extra prayer and sacrifice each day during Lent.  Students are asked to find a space in their homes where they will see it each day.
  • Please join our Ladies prayer group each Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in the Library. This is a great time of prayer and fellowship.
  • Many students have already signed up to volunteer at St. Elizabeth’s school on Fridays after school until  2:30 p.m. You can still make the most of Friday afternoon service time because there is plenty of room for more volunteers!  Students can sign up on the hall bulletin board here at Lumen. Parents are also welcome to email Liz @ eloeffler@lumenchristiak.org or call Lumen’s main office for parent sign up!
  • All students grades 6-8 are invited to St. Benedict’s Junior High youth group on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at 6 p.m.
  • All High School Students are invited to St, Benedict’s youth group every Thursday @ 7 p.m.
  • Students who attend their Parish’s Youth group can earn extra points in Theology Classes!
  • It is great to see so many new altar servers serving for our school Masses. There is plenty of room for more!  Catholic students who have never served to be trained here at school.
  • Looking ahead: World Youth Day is January 22-27, 2019  in Panama. It would be wonderful to have a group from Lumen. More info to follow.

Shoparoo:  Shoparoo is an app in which you simply take photos of receipts on your smartphone and submit.  Lumen then earns “Roo Points” which are converted at the end of the year into a donation to the school.  Mrs. Estes and Mrs. Brewer both got this app on their phones and it is super easy and fun to use.  Follow these simple steps after you download the app from either the App Store or on Google Play:

  1. SHOP:  Shop for any product, at any store.
  2. SNAP:  Take a picture of your receipt.
  3. EARN:  Earn cash donations & sweepstakes entries

Link to Signup.com: Below is a link where you will find all of Lumen’s current signups in one spot.
