Principal’s Update: It is wonderful to see everyone back from Christmas break and getting right back into the swing of things. We already have student built catapults launching marshmallows in the gym and mock trials taking place in the upper room and it has only been a couple of days! Please remember that daily Mass is offered at 7:15 for anyone who wishes to attend and please note our Catholic Schools Week activities below. I’m still looking for a few parent and student volunteers to speak briefly and passionately about our school at parish Masses on Sunday, Jan 29th. I’ll provide the script if you provide the time and talent! Welcome Back!
No School Monday: There will be no school on Monday, January 16th for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Class Add/Drop Deadline: The last day to add or drop any classes is January 27th. Please contact Mrs. Brewer with any schedule changes and/or questions.
Lumen Spirit Wear: The pre-order of Lumen Spirit Wear (sweatpants & hoodies) have arrived. We ordered a small selection of extras in various sizes in case anyone missed the pre-order and would like either sweatpants and/or hoodies. These are available in the front office.
Speed Limit Reminder: Just a friendly reminder to parents and student drivers to please be aware of the speed limits around Lumen Christi. As you drive through the neighborhood by the school, the speed limit is only 15 mph in some areas. We received a phone call from a concerned home owner who asked us to remind everyone to drive safely.

Many students have already signed up to volunteer at St. Elizabeth’s school on Fridays after school until 2:30 p.m. You can still make the most of Friday afternoon service time because there is plenty of room for more volunteers! Students can sign up on the hall bulletin board here at Lumen. Parents are also welcome to email Liz @ eloeffler@lumenchristiak.org or call Lumen’s main office for parent sign up!
-
All students grades 6-8 are invited to St. Benedict’s Junior High youth group on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at 6pm.
-
Students who attend their Parish’s Youth group can earn extra points in Theology Classes!
-
It is great to see so many new altar servers serving for our school Masses. There is plenty of room for more! We invite all Catholic students who have never served to be trained here at school.
Reminder-Changes for Spring Semester: Below are some reminders about the changes for Spring Semester which were also highlighted in a letter from Mr. Ross before Christmas break.
-
Change #1 Our Bell Schedule and Weekly School Mass Day: We have adjusted our bell schedule for 2nd semester, which moves our weekly School Mass Day to Thursday. Please note also the start time of Mass will move to 9am. This allows us more time to celebrate our weekly Mass while getting our students to 2nd period on schedule. It also puts our two block days closer together (Tuesday and Wednesday) allowing for a better structure and flow of classes throughout the week. And it gives those parents with children at St. Elizabeth’s the opportunity to attend their Mass on Wednesdays and our Mass on Thursdays.
-
Change #2 Daily Mass offered at Lumen at 7:15am: Father Tom has generously offered to celebrate Mass at our school every morning at 7:15 during the school year, except Thursdays. This Mass is non-mandatory and completely optional. Our hope is that students, parents, and others will take advantage of this unique opportunity as they are moved to do so.
-
Change #3 Additional Opportunities for Reconciliation: Father Tom has also agreed to make himself available to our students for reconciliation and penance services at least once a week. He will be in the confessional at the Parish during our Tuesday lunch schedule (11:05-11:30).
-
Change #4 No First Friday Mass: We will no longer have First Friday Mass. This means that, with the exception of Lent, our Fridays will either be an A schedule or a B schedule, with dismissal at 1220. During Lent, we will extend our day slightly with the Stations of the Cross, teachers serving a simple lunch (a Lumen tradition for many years), and dismissal at 12:35.
-
Change #5 Campus Ministry as a 7th hour Elective: Campus Ministry is being offered as an elective during 7th hour in the same manner as Yearbook, Drama, Art, Archery, and Study Hall. Students will meet during 7th hour on Tuesdays and Wednesdays with our Campus Minister, Mrs. Loeffler, and plan faith in action and outreach opportunities and organize liturgy, prayer, worship, and fellowship programs. Students who successfully complete the Campus Ministry elective are eligible to receive .5 elective credit.
Catholic Schools Week:
-
Sunday, January 29th: This Sunday is the official start to Catholic Schools Week. I am soliciting parents and students to serve as “Ambassadors” for our school. These Ambassadors agree to speak at their parish Masses or Sunday church services or even hold an informational meeting for families from their church or denomination. The purpose is to have our current families to sing the praises of our school in order to move us from the “Best Kept Secret in Anchorage” to the “Best Known School in Anchorage” and to grow our enrollment. If interested in this opportunity for Share Hours, please contact Brian Ross directly at 907-273-1503 or bross@lumenchristiak.org.
-
All Catholic Schools Mass (Monday, January 30th at 10:30am): On Monday, January 30th Lumen Christi will join St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Holy Rosary, and Our Lady of the Valley for an All Catholic Schools Mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe at 10:30am. Please join us if your schedule allows.
-
State of the School Parent Meeting (Monday, January 30th at 7pm): New this year, we are hosting a “State of the School” meeting for all current parents and prospective families. Light refreshments will be served and there will be a few raffle prizes. We have also invited the new Archbishop to attend. You can expect a series of short presentations by me, Father Tom, and others highlighting our mission and vision, academics, campus ministry, finance, and athletics. If you want information on what our school has done this year and where it is going in the future, you do not want to miss this event.
-
Lumen Christi Community Mass at St. Benedict Parish (Sunday, February 5th at 10:30am): As Catholic Schools Week comes to a close, what a better way to celebrate our school than with the parishioners of St. Benedict’s. Our students and staff will participate in the liturgy as altar servers, lectors, extraordinary ministers, gift bearers, and hospitality. This is not a mandatory event, but I am requesting parents and students to attend whether you are Catholic or not. As a ministry of St. Benedict, our school benefits greatly from the generosity, support, and hospitality of the parish. This is our way of showing our deepest appreciation by celebrating the Mass with them.
