Principal’s Update:
Thank you to all who joined us Tuesday evening for our 6th Annual State of the School. I apologize for the audio if you tuned in to the livestream on Facebook. We had it all set up to go beforehand and then, as technology is apt to do, it failed at the last minute. We have added the slide deck to our school website for your further review here:https://lumenchristiak.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/Lumen-Christi-State-of-the-School-2022-1.pdf
For those not able to attend in person or virtually, we introduced our illustrious School Board and our parish and school staff. We reviewed our foundational documents, including our mission statement, our vision and Core Values, and our six Attributes of a Lumen Graduate. We highlighted some of the great things we have done over the past year, including a 30% increase in enrollment and strong performance by our Class of 2022 on the PSAT and SAT despite the challenges of COVID. While other schools and districts are discussing “learning loss” from online learning or lockdowns, we celebrated the learning and development accomplishments of our students. Four members of our Class of 2022 spoke about their experiences taking college classes while in high school, winning a state basketball championship and playing football for Dimond, participating in our Student Leadership Board and our rifle program, and working on critical thinking and speaking skills in our Senior Bioethics Seminar and debate program. Joshua, Brenden, Frankie and Jack, as well as the other 12 members of the Class of 2022, continue to make us proud and showcase the awesome things happening here at Lumen.
We celebrated and recognized our newest “And Then Some” Award recipient, Class of 2024 sophomore Kennedy Thimsen, who goes above and beyond to make Lumen a special place to be each day. We recognized the great accomplishments of our National Honor Society chapter and Mrs Loeffler’s tremendous work in faith formation through our active Campus Ministry program. We thanked all those who helped us achieve 108% of our goal through the LUMENary Drive last fall and our Director of Advancement, Anne Gore, provided an update on our annual Gala scheduled for Saturday, Feb 12th as well.
We ended the evening by highlighting where we are going in the future. I encourage you to review some of the things we are still planning on doing, including our COGNIA reaccreditation review on March 30-Apr 1, our math curriculum review scheduled for Apr-May, and the soon to be announced School Crest competition.
I covered a lot of ground in an hour on Tuesday and I know I left many things out. We just have so many good news stories here at Lumen to sing from the mountain tops. I hope you take time to review the slide deck and take pride in your school. I’m happy to follow up with any questions you may have.
We pray for victory, good sportsmanship, and safe travels for our high school basketball teams competing in Nenana this weekend as well as our middle school volleyball teams who will compete in a jamboree here at Lumen on Friday. May you have a wonderful weekend! God bless!

TWO WEEKS!
So. Many. Great. Things. Happening and the Gala is just 2 weeks away!
First up – there’s a few tickets left in the AK Airlines Raffle – scoop one (or two) up for $50/each, they’re worth $1,250 (each!) and good for anywhere AK Airlines flies. Pretty good return on investment! They’re not going to last much longer, so register today, to buy: https://lchs2022.ggo.bid
Second thing – Door Prizes! Not gonna lie, we were scratching our heads over how to best distribute “virtual” tickets. We now have that dialed in! The night of the auction you simply have to enter your name in the ‘comment’ section of the Facebook live stream feed – members of our crack shot team will be monitoring that and will enter your name into a spreadsheet of assigned numbers. An online random number generator will select the winners of each prize.
Here’s the fine print: you have to have your name entered before 7:10pm. The pre-show starts at 6:45pm, so we recommend you log in early, get your name entered and then get ready for the show which will begin promptly at 7:00pm. More fine print: While there’s no cost to be entered in for a Door Prize Drawing, you must be present online to claim your prize and win.
Door Prize #1 = Airpods Pro
Door Prize #2 = Two nights at the Captain Cook Hotel in a Junior Suite + a $200 gift certificate for the Crow’s Nest
Door Prize #3 = Willow Creek raft trip for four
HOW TO GET INVOLVED:
** Register here for the live and silent events, and to purchase AK Airlines Raffle Tickets: lchsak2022.ggo.bid
** Like , Love , Invite and Share our Event on our Facebook Page:(7) Lumen Christi High School Gala/Auction Fundraiser | Facebook
** Keep watching our Facebook Page for more information about……everything!
We’ve still got a few JBER spots left for students who would like to put some time in serving those – who serve us! (Parents are also welcome if you would like to earn Share Hours.) As a reminder, this will be on Wednesday, February 2nd from 3:40-7:00pm at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. The school bus will be departing from Lumen Christi at 3:40pm and will return to Lumen at 7:00pm. Students may stay after school, as we will provide food to those who volunteer. Let’s encourage our Lumen students to jump on this amazing opportunity! See Mrs.Guzman to sign-up or send an email to lchs@lumenchristiak.org

Principal’s Update:
Well, we are off to an interesting spring semester and 2022! We ask you to pray for all those affected by travel delays (we still have many students and families stuck around the country) as well as those impacted by this recent COVID surge (we have several students and family members recovering from illness). I appreciate everyone’s flexibility and support as we started out mask optional but quickly transitioned back to masks as the community numbers increased. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and adjust accordingly. Our primary focus is to continue to keep our doors open to in-person learning despite the challenges we face.
With the colder temperatures, I ask parents to ensure that your son or daughter is “dressed for the weather” each day. I do greet quite a few students entering the school building in the morning and walking around the school without a fleece sweater, jacket, or other warming layer. Students with exposed skin (bare legs for ladies and bare arms for all) will be extremely miserable (and maybe even become hypothermic or frostbitten) in the event of an emergency. In November 2018, following the 7.1 earthquake, we had to evacuate the building and our students stood outside for over an hour while we ensured a suitable alternate location was safe to occupy. We also run monthly fire drills or other evacuation procedures, so please make sure your son or daughter is prepared and dresses accordingly each morning.
Good luck to our Archangel basketball teams who have scrimmages against Homer and Cook Inlet Academy this Friday and Saturday!

Brother Francis Shelter is desperately in need of sandwiches. Beginning January 14th we will be making meat and cheese sandwiches each Friday from 1-2 p.m. Students are welcome to join us for an hour of service. We are requesting donations of bread, ham, turkey, and cheese slices. You can send them in throughout the week and we will refrigerate them until Friday each week. As needs arise, Catholic Social Services will contact the school and we will work on Fridays to meet them. Later requests might be for socks, gloves, or other items to make cold weather bags. We will let you know as we go. Thank you so much in advance!

LUMENary Drive
And that’s a WRAP! With true heartfelt thanks for the generosity of so many, we’re thrilled to announce that we met both our financial and our fingers-crossed-timeline goals for this year’s LUMENary Drive! With an as-of-today total of $76,058.00 we’re officially at 101.41% of our $75,000 goal, which last year, took us until the end of April to meet. The generosity of Lumen families and community supporters is extraordinary. Thank You!
Parent Shout Outs
A huge shout out to the Anchorage Lion’s Club and to Cathy Medland, R.N. for organizing the free Vision and Hearing checks for our students and staff this past Tuesday! We are all so thankful!
Another huge shout out to Michelle Hohmann, Sherry Strizak, Bob Gunderson and John Mitchell for their amazing HOT LUNCH teamwork last semester! Thank you for picking right back up this week and continuing hot lunch for this spring semester! You are awesome!
Remind Text Messages
Just a FYI for parents, the Remind Team has recently notified us that they will be assigning new Remind phone numbers to SMS users. Feel free to save the number when you receive our next phone text/message from us! If you have never received school text messages, please contact: lchs@lumenchristiak.org and Mrs. Guzman will add you to the list!
Lumen Legacy
27th Annual Gala Fundraiser
Invitations will be out in the mail tomorrow; donations are coming in; the bidding site will open soon and the Gala Team has some amazing and oh-so-clever things planned to help make this the best event ever! Intrigued? You should be…..stay tuned!
This week’s Lumen Legacy spotlight is on Trey Bernert (2018). Up until last semester, Trey had been attending Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, but decided that path wasn’t his path! He left NAU, is working and saving money to open his own ice cream shop “Starry Sky Creamery.” Family reports it’s been a fun change to see Trey’s inspiration, initiative and most importantly his passion for this new path. And as Trey reports “Bill Gates dropped out his first semester of junior year as well so my company will be the Microsoft of Ice Cream.”
Trey, if anyone is going to succeed at this it’s you – we’re with you 100% (and hopefully will score some free samples if we’re in AZ and pop by to visit.) Cheers to you, and thanks for checking in!
Other alumni students and families – we’d love to hear from you! Email LCHS@lumenchristiak.org to tell us what you’re up to these days.
