Principal’s Update:
Well, the opening round of the State basketball championships have resulted in both the boys and girls’ teams advancing to the quarterfinals. Boys play tonight at 4:45pm and girls play at 7:45 at the Alaska Airlines Center. We pray that they continue to do well and find themselves in the championship games on Saturday. We will continue to keep you posted on their progress and we hope that you will come out to show your support for our student athletes!
As we celebrate the our basketball teams, I want to also highlight the growing list of accomplishments of other Lumen students including:
Class of 2022 Seniors Jack Schroder and Liam Dupras, who play on the Anchorage Hockey Association’s team which won the 18U State Hockey Championship earlier this week.
Class of 2023 Junior Carson Blackford-Esary who plays on the Anchorage Hockey Association’s U16B team which won the 16B State Hockey Championship last week.
Class of 2022 Senior Jack Murkowski and Class of 2023 Junior Emily Ross who received an Honorable Mention for their video entry in the 2022 C-SPAN StudentCam competition. Over 1400 videos were submitted and only 150 videos received a prize. Jack and Emily will split the $250 Honorable Mention prize!
Class of 2024 Sophomore Brooke Ahrenholz who was selected as a National Youth Delegate to the 2022 Washington Youth Summit on the Environment at George Mason University. This summer, Brooke will join a select group of 100 other students from around the country to participate in an intensive, week-long study of leadership in environmental science and conservation.
Class of 2024 Sophomore Kateri Everard who participated in two Feisana (Irish Dance Competitions) at the beginning of Spring Break in Seattle. She competed in a total of 22 dance competitions in two days, and she came home with a suitcase of awards, including multiple 4th-2nd places finishes and THREE 1st place trophies! Kateri clearly had the blessings of the Irish with her!
Well done Archangels! We are so proud of all of our students. I always apologize if I fail to acknowledge and highlight the great work our students and families are doing, so please keep me or Mrs. Guzman informed so that we can give a shout out to our hard-working Archangels.

Principal’s Update:
Thank you to all in our community who rose to the occasion and answered the call for volunteers to support our hosting of the Regional basketball tournament over the next few days. I’m always in awe of the level of support and commitment of our parents and families! Thank you! Please come out to cheer our teams on to victory!
As we look beyond Spring Break and into Lent, we have populated our calendar above with opportunities for Stations of the Cross, all school Rosary, and Lenten Reconciliation Services. These events will take place, as per the schedule, during our 7th period elective time. So students will participate in these liturgical activities in lieu of study hall or any other assigned elective (riflery, yearbook, etc.). I ask that all students on early dismissal remain in the school building on these days and attend with the rest of the school. Exceptions will be granted to those students attending King Tech, jobs, or any other hard scheduling requirement. Our final Stations of the Cross will be during the 7th period on Holy Thursday, April 14th just prior to dismissal for the Triduum and Easter weekend.
After Spring Break, we will also renew a pre-COVID Lumen tradition of Friday Lenten Soup Lunches! These will start on Friday, March 18th and continue through Lent. As you will see, we will alternate between high school and junior high (opposite the Wednesday Hot Lunch schedule), so that all students have an opportunity for at least one hot lunch per week. By tradition, Lumen teachers prepare simple, meatless soups, chowder, mac and cheese, and other “crockpotable” items and sell bowls for $2-3 dollars. We usually have bread rolls as well. Monies earned go to support a local charity. In the past, these Friday meals have been a great way to focus our students on Lenten ideals of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.
I have asked Anchorage Police Officer Butler, who is the Student Resource Officer at Dimond High School, to come and speak to our students about internet and social media safety. He will be at school during 7th period on Tuesday, March 29th.
Finally, it is hard to believe that we are halfway through the semester already. Our students have been doing great and deserve a week off. On behalf of our entire school staff, have a blessed and safe Spring Break! We will see you at the basketball tournament and then again on March 14th!

Principal’s Update:
I hope our students enjoyed their extended long weekend, especially with our added snow day on Tuesday! Even though this has been a short week, it’s been a busy one!
I know our thoughts are on Spring Break, which starts at the end of next week. But we can really use our entire community’s support and assistance as we host the Peninsula Conference regional basketball championships March 3-5. We have nine teams total, boys and girls, coming from all over Alaska to participate, so we want to put our best foot forward and be gracious and welcome hosts. We could use your support in three main ways:
- Commit to signing up to man the concession stand or main gate, host a meal for the hospitality suite, serve as an announcer, or any other countless tasks necessary to run a successful tournament. Many hands make light work, and your hours go to support our athletic program and earn Share Hours. Make it a family affair and your Lumen student can earn Faith in Action hours too! You can access our support needs here: https://signup.com/go/qJHJHgB
- Commit to coming out to support our teams as they play. Our first games are Thursday night (times below) and we have a theme of “BLUE OUT.” So wear blue and come out to cheer our teams on to victory! Both teams are poised to earn the regional championship and again earn berths to State scheduled for March 16-19th.
- Attend Mass with our teams at 7am on Thursday, March 3rd in St. Benedict’s church to start off the tournament in prayer. Show our support for our young men and women by celebrating Mass with them before we start our school day and the tournament begins. Help us pray for our Archangel athletes!
Thanks in advance for your continued commitment of time, talent, and treasure. On to victory, Archangels!

The final numbers are (almost) in – just one more outstanding invoice. Once that’s in we’ll be able to provide you with an exact figure, but know that we’re on track to raise the most amount EVER in the school’s Gala Fundraising history! Considering that last year we raised the “then” most amount ever ($110,000) – we’re over the moon to announce that this year we’ll close the books out at just over $113,000. So much of our success comes from the dedicated Gala Team, but we couldn’t do it without the generosity and participation of our amazing friends, families and supporters like you. There are no other words than simply – thank you.
Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 11th, 2023 when we’ll return to a fun but elegant in-person event! The Gala Team has already started planning!

Principal’s Update:
Wow what an awesome Gala last Saturday! Thank you to everyone who bid high and bid often to support our school! I want to give a special shout out again to Clay and Laura Butcher, and our dedicated auction team of Celine, Tracy, Merrileigh, Patrick, and Carla. We are so very glad Gala coordinator emeritus Danielle Rybicki returned from retirement to provide additional assistance and support. And every good team needs a good leader, and this event could not have come together without the commitment and passion of our very own Anne Gore!! Initial fundraising numbers look very promising, so thank you all! Well done!
I’ve fielded a few inquiries in the last few days about our mask policy. With the number of cases declining quickly and positive test rates decreasing in the same way (praise be to God!), it is time to reevaluate our protocols. On Tuesday, I enjoyed hearing students’ perspectives from the class representatives in our Student Leadership Board, and this listening session extended into hearing from the members of our School Board at the monthly meeting that same night. Tomorrow, while our students are enjoying an extended weekend, our staff and teachers will be here attending Mass, praying for our students and families, conducting faith formation, and preparing for our COGNIA reaccreditation review. We also plan to discuss our protocols as a staff and evaluate next steps. I anticipate further fruitful discussion, with an update being sent to families over the weekend.
I deeply appreciate everyone’s patience throughout this. I always want to hear as many perspectives from anyone willing to share, so please feel free to email me at bross@lumenchristiak.org. I might not respond back directly, but please know I will take your thoughts into careful and prayerful consideration.
Please pray for our Class of 2024 10th graders who will be on retreat with St. Benedict’s this weekend as well as our middle school volleyballers who finish up their season with a jamboree on Saturday. Our basketball teams have had a few games canceled due to this crazy weather, so we are hoping that we can get those rescheduled soon. We wish our high schoolers good luck and Godspeed as they enter the last few, yet critical, weeks of their season!

WOW – JUST WOW!
Thank you to all who volunteered, donated and participated in this year’s “No Place Like Home” Gala last Saturday night. It was a great success and we absolutely could not have done it without each and every one of you. We’re still crunching the expense numbers but as soon as we have those
and can release an event net proceeds amount, parents will be the first to know.
COACH JOHN WARREN won the “Ruby Slippers” contest! Now the quest begins to find men’s size 11.5 ‘ruby slippers’ but once we’ve secured them, we’ll get the day scheduled, and oh yes, there will be plenty of pictures taken and shared! Huge thanks to Coach for being such a good sport, and to his many in-laws who jumped in to cement in his “winning” (losing?!) of the contest. Be sure and check out the school’s Facebook page where there are lots of pics posted from the night!
The Gala Team will close out the event with a wrap up meeting next week, after which planning will begin for NEXT YEAR’s event! Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 11th, 2023 when we’ll be back LIVE and IN-PERSON to celebrate and support our amazing school.

Principal’s Update:
Well, we are 48 hours away from our annual Gala! There is truly no place like home! We hope all in our school community, and many others from all over, will bid high and bid often over the next few days to help raise money for our school. Each of us should be deeply grateful for dedication and commitment of time and talent by Anne Gore and her amazing auction team, including:
- Danielle Rybicki, who’s guided the Gala to success for the last 6 years. Danielle’s ongoing leadership during this transition time has been instrumental in leading the team to what will undoubtedly be another successful event. Anne is certain that Danielle would have loved to have handed over her impeccably organized binder of notes and walked away, but Danielle has stuck by the team (and especially Anne) for the whole event. THANK YOU Danielle, for your ongoing dedication to our school, and to the success of this event.
- Carla Blackford-Esary who along with her procurement team, helped secure donations from all over Alaska totalling over $76,000 – the largest amount of donations ever!;
- Celine Kaplan for her front-end efforts in securing sponsorships, getting invitations printed and mailed and thank you’s written;
- Tracy Ross, and her trusty assistant Yvette Tousignant, for managing the thousands of details that go into photographing, cataloging and listing almost 500 items onto the online bidding website;
- Merrilleigh Boring for her hard work in managing communication and disbursement;
- Patrick Muller for agreeing to be the ‘boots on the ground’ labor the night of the live event, and for helping with disbursement;
- Amy Locke for her creativity and graphic design work, creating the fantastic “Wizard of Oz” images that we’ve used in all of our marketing efforts;
- To all the parents who helped organizing the awesome class projects up for bid;
- And last but not least, an extraordinary set of parents here at the school, Clay & Laura Butcher, owners of C+L Creative who are not only producing and live streaming the event, but who filmed and produced the “Better Together” video that you will see the night of the event, and ALL of the videos you see on our website and Facebook featuring our school. Clay & Laura – we are forever in your debt.It is clear that we have so many great things going on here at Lumen! I want to end with a special shout out to our boys and girls high school basketball teams. Both teams won third place in last week’s Nenana Invitational Tournament. Additionally, the boys team received the Sportsmanship Award, and Natalie Grubba, Emily Ross, Amara Warren, Brenden Gregory, Robert Wilcox (homeschool), and Tim Bennett (homeschool) earned All-Tournament honors! Tim Bennett also scored his 1000th point in the last game of the tournament, a truly impressive and historical accomplishment in high school basketball!
Last night, both teams won great victories over Unalaska here at home. Brenden scored 51 points (out of 77) in the game, which is absolutely incredible! Way to go, Brenden!
Our teams are on the road again this weekend to the Crowley Classic in Talkeetna. We wish them good luck and safe travels! Please make sure you mark your calendars for the Regions basketball tournament hosted here at Lumen from Mar 3-5. We want to pack our stands with fans and cheer our teams on to a second year as conference champions and well-earned berths to State! Go Archangels!
