Principal’s Report 3/7/2014
Dear Lumen Christi,
Spring Break is here! We wish everyone a wonderful and relaxing Spring Break. The 3rd quarter progress reports were sent out earlier today. If you do not receive one by the time classes resume, please contact the front office. The school will be closed until 7:15 AM Monday, March 17th. We look forward to seeing students bright and early Monday morning, March 17th.
Please remember, during Lenten Season the school will implement full day (Wednesday schedules) every Friday so students can attend Mass. This means that until after Easter, school will not get out on Friday until 2:30 PM.
Lumen is looking forward to an exciting 2014 – 2015 school year. The pre-enrollment period for next year will run from March 18th students who plan to return for the following academic year. As you know, each grade level is capped at 20 students. Once we have current students enrolled for the 2014 – 2015 academic year, we will open up enrollments to the larger Anchorage community. Once a grade level reaches 20 students, the school will start a waiting list. Therefore, if you want to ensure a place for next year, please take advantage of the pre-enrollment opportunity! You can pre-enroll at the front desk starting Tuesday, March 18th Wednesday, March 19th for information.
Mark your calendars! The 4th Annual Cinco De Mayo event will be held on Saturday, May 3rd from 6 PM to 9 PM in the Lumen Christi Gym. This year we will feature Xochilt Quetzal Ticu folk dancing group, as well as Mariachi Agave Azul. Come enjoy delicious Mexican dishes and help us celebrate! Tickets are $20 per person or $300 per table. Please contact our office to place your reservation! Our Cinco de Mayo event is also currently looking for sponsors!
Become a Jalepeño sponsor for $300 and receive a 1/2 page in our event program for your logo or advertisement! Or, take it up a notch and become a Jabanero Sponsor for $500 – you will receive a full page for advertisement and a sponsor table at the event!
Lumen would like to thank the Copper Valley High School Alumni Association who recently donated $1,000 scholarship for a student at Lumen. The scholarship is for a student who seeks a strong Catholic education and may have financial need. Lumen Christi High School was founded by many of the CVHS alumni, so the school appreciates the continued legacy of CVHS. If you would like to apply for the scholarship, stop by the front desk and pick up an application.
Lumen continues to appreciate the hard work of the PVO! There will not be a PVO meeting on March 4th. However, a special PVO meeting on fundraising has been scheduled for March 25th at 6:30 PM. This is an extremely important meeting to discuss fundraising for our school, our progress this year, and brainstorm future plans for accomplishing our budgetary goals. Please plan to attend and bring plenty of great ideas and energy!
All families should be aware that opportunities to earn share hours, particularly fundraising hours, are becoming more limited as the year winds down toward summer. Some opportunities are listed below – please sign up! If you need to earn additional share hours, we may also need help in other areas intermittently. Please contact the Office or Gail Grafton for further until April 15th. If you have any questions, please contact the front desk.
Jr. High Indoor Soccer – We need help in the Snack Shack for Junior High Indoor Soccer rallies. These hours count as fundraising hours.

The monies raised at the event will ensure our students continue to receive a strong Catholic education at an affordable cost. Do you have a school uniform that your child has outgrown? If so, please drop it off at the school or the Archangel attic. We have growing students who are looking for uniforms for the rest of this school year. Lands’ End is largely out of girls’/womens’ navy cardigans and they are backordered till about the end of school. Your donations are greatly appreciated!

World Youth Day (WYD). A group of our young people went to WYD in Brazil last summer where they celebrated the faith with Pope Francis and 3.5 million young Catholics. It was incredible! We are now beginning preparations for our next WYD which will be in Krakow, Poland in 2016. The main fundraisers for WYD are the well-known 7 course Italian dinners. The next dinner is February 15 at 6 PM in the St. Benedict Parish Hall. The cost is $30.00. The dinner features homemade pasta, spinach gnocchi, stuffed mushrooms, home-made desserts and wonderful fellowship. We hope to see you there!

Dear Lumen Christi,
Today was a wonderful kick-off to the upcoming Catholic Schools Week! The students and parent chaperones enjoyed an “All School” field trip to see the musical production of Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat at West High School. At the Assembly on Monday the students will recite the Rosary at St. Benedict Parish.
On Wednesday, January 29 the school will have a slightly different schedule. As part of ‘Catholic Schools’ week, Lumen will join all of the local Catholic High Schools at St. Elizabeth’s for Mass. Wednesday will be a “B” schedule day. We will leave Lumen at 1:00 PM. Mass will not end until 3:00 PM, so the students will not return to Lumen until about 3:30 PM. Please let the parents who do not read the Lumen news know, as to prevent extra wait time at the school. Also, if you would prefer your student to be picked up at SEAS, please let me know.
On Saturday, February 1, Don Jose’s Restaurant plans to donate all proceeds to the local Catholic Schools, including Lumen. Please plan to have dinner, support the school, and enjoy a wonderful meal. If you would like more details, we have flyers at the front desk.
We have a new member of our Lumen staff. Mrs. Jessica Estes has accepted the position to support the Catholic ministry of our school at the front desk, after the recent departure of Mrs. Katie Roche. Mrs. Estes will start on Monday, February 10. Mrs. Estes comes to us from another school in Anchorages where she filled the same role. Mrs. Estes and her family are parishioners at St. Elizabeth’s Parish. In the interim, Ms. Savannah Lorenz and Ms. Peggy Witzleben will cover the desk. Please join me in welcoming Mrs. Estes to our Lumen staff – and in thanking both Ms. Lorenz and Ms. Witzleben for their assistance at the school.
For those heading on the basketball trip next weekend, it is the “Kenai Super Trip”. Please wish our Archangels good luck. The games are as follows:
January 29 – Nikolaevsk
January 30 – Ninilchik
January 31 – Cook Inlet Academy, Soldotna
We also have a trip to Seldovia coming up February 7-8. Away games are a lot of fun and it’s great to see fans in the stands. Please travel to support the teams, if your schedules permit.
Attached is a link to PVO activities. Your participation is appreciated! Please visit the PVO sign up pate at: http://staging.lumenchristiak.com/pvo/volunteer-sign-up/.
We will continue to remind you about the he Lumen Winter Wonderland Gala. We sent out mailings last week. We highly encourage you to attend and participate in making the event a success. It is one of the primary fundraisers to offset school expenses as we provide our students a quality faith-based education. Please contact the Gala Committee at gala@lumenchristiak.org or 907-273-1530 for further information on how you can assist with the event and/or help us sell corporate tables.
One of the elements that makes the Lumen Winter Wonderland Gala a success is the gift baskets. Gift baskets always sell well at our Gala and we would love each family to consider donating a basket. You don’t have to put it together and make it look beautiful… just leave it up to the basket committee to do it for you! Themes can be almost anything from wine & cheese, to gardening, hobbies, coffee, movies, etc. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. LeAndra Childs or Mrs. Jessica Estes.
The other great fundraiser for the school is the annual campaign fund called the Lumenary Drive. These are tax-deductible donations to the school. We have now raised $37,381.00 and are over half way to the $70,000.00 goal mark. Please help us reach our goal! If you work for a company that matches donations, let us know. We encourage you to reach out to grandparents and other family members to help support the Lumen Christi mission. The monies we collect go directly to the school to help with teacher salaries, academics, and building maintenance. Any amount large or small is put to good use. Checks can be dropped off at the front desk.
Finally, let’s support the Youth Group at St. Benedicts. Students interested in travelling to World Youth Day (WYD) with the St. Benedict group can attend a meeting at 1:00 PM this Sunday, Jan. 26th in the Upper Room (at LCHS). For those interested in the service trip to the orphanage in Jamaica, there is a youth and parent meeting at 2:00 PM, in the Upper Room after the WYD meeting. Each year, St. Benedict forms a ‘Truth Pursuit’ team that competes against other parishes. The team studies various categories and then comes together for the tournament on April 5th. Please stop by at 2:00 PM this Sunday at the Upper Room to get details and categories on this event as well. Finally, don’t forget about the Youth Nights in the Upper Room every Wednesday from 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM.
Thank you all for your support of Lumen!
