Principal’s Report 12/09/2014
Dear Lumen Family:
The semester is drawing to a close. In a few short days, final exams will be upon the students. It is a busy time of reflection, prayer, and joy as we look forward to Christmas day and the celebration of the birth of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As the semester ends, please keep the following announcements in mind.
Finals Week – December 16-18
The schedule for the week of finals is as follows:
- Tuesday: Finals for periods 1 and 2
Dismissal for the day at 11:15 AM
- Wednesday: Finals for periods 3 and 4
Dismissal for the day at 11:15 AM
- Thursday: Finals for periods 5 and 6
Dismissal for the day at 11:15 AM
- Friday: No School, Teacher In-service
Looking for 2 Volunteer Interviewers for 12/18, 9:45 – 11:15 a.m.
As part of Mrs. Carlson’s Speech class, her students learn how to write a resume, cover letter, and they also go through a job interview. For that interview part, Mrs. Carlson is looking for two adults who have experience in conducting hiring interviews. The interviews will last about 10-15 minutes and entail asking general interview questions and a brief evaluation of the candidates. You don’t have to prepare anything, you will receive the general interview questions beforehand. The objective is to have students walk away with a simulated experience of looking and interviewing for a job that is as real as possible to “the real world”. This will count toward your ‘share hours’. Thank you.
If you can help out, please contact Mrs. Carlson via e-mail:
acarlson [at] lumenchristiak.com
Bad Weather
With the ice and rain scheduled to continue for a few more days, please make sure you listen to the radio and/or check the Anchorage School District (ASD) website in the mornings. Lumen is located near Dimond High School so if Dimond is cancelled and/or on a delayed start, so is Lumen. Also, if school at Lumen is cancelled for the day, so are all Lumen after school activities, unless you are notified to the contrary.
Parish Help
We need helpers to assist in removing the altar tile at St. Benedict’s on Sunday, December 14 after the 12:15 PM Mass. This work is eligible for share hours (and is mostly hauling tile out to the dump trailer — and shouldn’t take that long, maybe an hour or so). Please let us know if you can help by calling the front office at (907) 245-9231.
Semester 2 Schedule Changes
Students who need to make changes in their Semester 2 schedule should contact Mrs. Brewer (dbrewer@lumenchristiak.org) before Friday, December 12.
Art Class and Jazz Band
Any student who will be joining or dropping either art class or jazz band needs to notify Mrs. Brewer (dbrewer@lumenchristiak.org) before Friday, December 12. Jazz band has a fee of $15 per session. The art class fee is $250 per semester.

The Senior High School students enjoyed an outstanding spiritual retreat at St. Therese’s camp in Palmer while the Junior High students participated in various activities at school, from bowling to making sandwiches for the Brother Francis Shelter. The boy and the girl’s Junior High School basketball teams finished an outstanding season, with both teams taking first place at the Alaska Christian Schools tournament. The parents also enjoyed a time of fellowship at the annual Lumen Christi Dessert Auction, with a special thank you to the McCormick’s, Heliala’s, and other families who made the night so wonderful. Student Government News
November is Diabetes Awareness Month and, since a few of the Lumen faculty and students have Type-1 or Type-2 diabetes, we had a dress down day today, November 26, to encourage and enhance the celebratory holiday mood. Students were invited to bring $3.00 and wear blue for Diabetes Awareness. All the proceeds from the dress down will be given to the Iacocca Family Foundation, which is an organization that funds innovative and promising research programs and projects that will hopefully lead to a cure for Type-1 diabetes.
Also, Student Government hosted a Junior High social on November 14t when students came to Mrs. Mespelli’s room to eat pizza, watch a movie, and hang out with friends. It was very successful! Thank you for all of your continued support.
Finally, A BIG THANK YOU to all of our students and parents who worked so hard and donated 1,156 boxes of stuffing to provide to the Thanksgiving Blessing at St. Patrick’s parish!!! We had 88{d4876d85bca45a190b33d6c696456a399841af28eb325342d1f9ba09483f3a19} overall participation and actually 100{d4876d85bca45a190b33d6c696456a399841af28eb325342d1f9ba09483f3a19} in the junior class! Dear Lumen Family:
It is ‘All Hallows Eve’ and the halls of Lumen are full of happy students, dressed in a variety of costumes. The faculty and staff are also dressed in costumes depicting characters from Star Trek to ‘Cat in the Hat’. The junior high basketball teams took the ferry from Whittier to Cordova for a tournament, while the girls’ volleyball team prepares for a weekend at Su-Valley. The first week in November brings with it All Saints’ Day and our monthly Rosary, along with two Masses (Wednesday and Friday). Before we know it, we’ll be heading out for Thanksgiving Break!
