Principal’s Update:
This week, our 9-11th graders survived the PSAT test challenge and the Seniors tackled the ASVAB. In the spirit of faith in action and the Corporal Works of Mercy, half of our Junior High students visited the sick and elderly and decorated the Prestige Care Nursing Home in Halloween and fall colors while the other half honored the dead by cleaning over 140 headstones at the Anchorage Cemetery.
If you made it into the school Thursday or Friday, you quickly noticed the hustle and bustle of activity in the gym as we host the “Spike Out” Spiketacular Volleyball Tournament. Thanks to all the parents, friends, and families who have donated their time, talent, and/or treasure by working in the concession stand, selling tickets at the gate, serving as line judges or scorers, or bringing in home cooked meals to host the Hospitality Lounge for coaches and other tournament officials. We are a small school, but we clearly have a big heart! Thank you again!
It was also great seeing and visiting everyone who came in for Parent-Teacher conferences! Combined with service projects and testing, it has been a busy, busy week for our students, families, and faculty, so I hope everyone enjoys the new snow and has a wonderful, blessed, and safe weekend.

Principal’s Update: What a blessed and wonderful week! Monday finished up as “just a normal day,” but by early Tuesday morning, we awoke to the Holy Father’s announcement of the appointment of a new Archbishop for Anchorage! By Wednesday, we were celebrating Mass with Archbishop-Elect Paul Etienne (pronounced “H-N”), Deacon Les Maiman, and Father Tom and Father Michael. We presented the new Archbishop some tokens of our appreciation, including a Lumen car window sticker, a Lumen fleece vest, and a framed photo of all our students with our signatures on the matting. Following Mass and a school photo around the altar, we welcomed the new Archbishop into our school for a short visit through the classrooms. The students were focused and engaging as usual, and although Archbishop-Elect Etienne could only stay for about 30 minutes, he was clearly excited about serving the Anchorage Catholic faith community and obviously looking forward to spending more time with our students. The official Installation will occur at 2pm on Wed, Nov 9th, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Co-Cathedral. We are working on a plan to provide an opportunity for as many students to attend as possible, so please mark the date on your calendar. We are also working to schedule a farewell Mass with Archbishop Schwietz in early November, since he has been such a visible presence for our students and a strong supporter of our school.
As noted on our Facebook page, congratulations to Parker Klem, Kaare Helgesen, and Chiamaka Labechi for winning the National Day of Prayer (Sept 9th) poetry competition. Last week, each of them received prize money from me and Father Tom with which they will need to donate to their favorite charity. We appreciate their inspiring contributions! The school hallways are still adorned with student prayers, poetry, posters, articles, artwork and song that tell the story of school wide “Peace Talks.” So take a moment when you stop by and see what our great and creative students put together.
In sports, congratulations to our varsity soccer team who placed 5th in the ASAA tournament over last weekend! Our volleyball team suffered a disappointing loss in their first game of the season against Su-Valley this week, but are working hard to be successful next time.
As we look to the future, please continue to read and watch the Campus Ministry notes below. We are working to bridge the 4 miles between us and St. Elizabeth’s and draw the two schools even closer together. We are organizing weekly Lumen student and parent volunteer opportunities after school on Friday afternoons at St. Elizabeth’s. Kathy Gustafson (Principal of St. Elizabeth’s) and I envision 5-6 Lumen students signing up and volunteering for a couple of hours at St. Elizabeth’s after Friday dismissal each week. Not only will students earn credit towards their Faith in Action requirements while helping out their fellow Catholic school brothers and sisters, but parents can earn Share Hours for volunteering to drive and assisting where necessary. We hope that you would take advantage of these scheduled opportunities to show our faith and put service into action! I hope you have a great rest of the week and a blessed weekend!
TONIGHT-11th Grade Parent College Information Night: We will be hosting a Junior Parent College and Graduation information night on Thursday, October 6th in room 108 at 6:30PM. Feel free to include any specific topics you would like to see covered!
Remind: We will be using Remind this year for communicating announcements in the event of school closures, emergency notifications, and general school reminders. Mrs. Estes will be adding each parent to Remind so look for a notification from Remind to arrive early next week. At that time you may customize your settings to receive: emails, text messages, or app notifications or all of the above.
PVO Meeting: Please join us on Tuesday, October 11th from 6:30-7:30pm for our monthly PVO meeting. One parent share hour is earned for attending.
School Board Meeting: Our next School Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 18th at 6pm.

Principal’s Update: I missed providing you an update last week because I joined the high school students on overnight Retreat at St. Therese’s camp. It was a wonderfully spiritual event and the students had so many opportunities to connect with each other and to reflect on how to love as Christ loved. Many thanks to our teachers who helped organize and supervise and a special thanks to the parents who helped cook and chaperone. Our newly christened “Campus Ministry Team” of students deserves a shout out since they led their peers in small group spiritual discussion, Mass, prayer, Adoration, and religious activities over the two days. As you enter the school building, be sure to take a moment to look at the ground around the shrine of Mary. Our students final activity was to paint a word on a rock which best captured their Retreat experience. Some of my favorites are: Commitment, Friendship, Courage, Community, and Family. All of these, and many more, were on full display last week and I was privileged to join our students in this experience.
While the high school was on Retreat, our junior high students enjoyed an educational (but rainy) trip to the Alaska Zoo and some time at the bowling alley. They also made sandwiches for Brother Francis Shelter and practiced their artistic talent. Our junior high soccer team also competed in the Alaska Christian Schools Activity Association tournament in Palmer. Although our team lost all three games, their spirits were high and their good sportsmanship showed.
At this week’s Monday assembly, we recognized the hard work (and salesmanship!) of 24 students who sold all of their Gold Cards. Each received a $10 gift card and a Dress Down day (to be announced). Matthew Goodwin received a $50 gift card for selling the most Gold Cards (18), while the 7th graders dined on sub sandwiches on Tuesday for selling the most number of cards by percentage out of all the classes. Overall, the Gold Card sales effort raised just over $5000 for the school! Well done Archangels!
Our tennis season closed out with Sofia Main competing in the Region 3 championships where she took second place after a nearly three hour match against her rival. Way to go Sofia! This Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, our varsity soccer team competes in Kenai at the ASAA tournament, so best of luck as they close out their season.
If you can join us, we will celebrate the Feast of the Archangel Mass on Thursday and recognize the actions of St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael for whom we are honored to have the Archangel as our school mascot.
Thank you for your continued support to the school and to our students and faculty! God Bless You!
Feast of the Archangel: Mass this week will be on Thursday for the Feast of the Archangel. To accommodate this, our school schedule will be slightly different next week.
Wednesday – will follow a Thursday schedule
Thursday – will follow a Wednesday schedule with Mass
Friday – regular Friday A schedule

The past few days have been full of Spirit Week dress and school photos. Thanks to those motivated students who dressed up in medieval costumes on Monday, their school uniforms (the most Spirited clothes of all!) on Tuesday for photos and on Wednesday for Mass, and wacky clothes on Thursday! We look forward to our student movie night this Friday and Homecoming Dance on Saturday. Congratulations again to those students selected and recognized by their peers for the Homecoming Court!
Next week brings a full calendar as well. Our high schoolers will participate in a two day retreat out at St. Therese’s Camp on September 22nd and 23rd. Thanks to our school retreat team, Campus Minister, teachers, and parents for volunteering for and bringing this great event together! It will be a wonderful opportunity to contemplate and strengthen our students’ relationship with Christ and one another. We have many fun and educational events scheduled for our junior high schoolers those days, including service projects, a bowling trip, and science activities, so the entire school will be busy here in town and in Wasilla.
As for sports, the girls Varsity volleyball team continues practicing hard each day to prepare for their first match in early October. Junior High soccer season will come to a close with a game at Kincaid on Monday the 19th and competing in the Alaska Christian Schools Athletic Association tournament in Palmer on September 23rd and 24th. One of our students, Sofia Main, will compete in tennis next Thursday for a qualifying spot at Regions. Good luck Sofia! And last but not least, the Varsity soccer team competes against Birchwood Christian on the 19th and Holy Rosary on the 20th. Before September ends and October brings the cold, come on out and support our Lumen students in their athletic competitions! Go Archangels!

- If your child plays HS basketball, you would save approximately $10 with the purchase of an Arch Card.
- Student cards are $25 each and your student will just about break even if they attended most games for both of Lumen’s tournaments (volleyball and basketball) and then they would get most other games of the season free.
