Did you know that many of our students participate in extracurricular activities outside of Lumen? One of our 8th graders and new students, Noah Cruz, Class of 2022, recently played in the Alaska South Central Pop Warner State Football Championships in the Cadets division. Noah’s team, the Buccaneers, beat the Steelers 44-0 to win the state title! Noah also plays on the Lumen junior high boys basketball team and attends St. Patrick’s Parish. Great job, Noah!
Congratulations to our 7th grade class (Lumen Class of 2023) who earned the title of “Gold Card Sales” champions for selling more Gold Cards per students than any other class. The entire 7th grade class received a pizza lunch on Wednesday in appreciation for their hard work and commitment to the school!
In our efforts to add up the reasons why a Catholic school education is awesome, I’ll tag on these gems:
31. The opportunity to serve at the altar at school Masses
32. Learning about the value and dignity of ourselves and others as made in God’s
image
33. Hearing “Leave Room for the Holy Spirit!” at school dances
34. A curriculum designed to help students grow spiritually
35. The freedom to talk about any religion in school, rather than no religion at all
We hope that our students enjoy the day off on Friday for Teacher Inservice and come back after the weekend well-rested. I look forward to seeing parents and students alike at the Awards Assembly on the 23rd and Parent-Teacher Conferences on Oct 26th and 27th. God Bless You!

Principal’s Update: A special shout out to our Big A/Little A program, led by Class of 2019 juniors Megan Flaherty and Julianne Estes, who sponsored a food drive last week. As a school, we collected at least 10 tubs of food items for the St. Benedict Parish Outreach Pantry! The items you and our students provided will go directly to support families in need. Thank you to Megan and Julianne who led this event and to all of you who supported it through your generosity.
Thank you also to those parents and students who have donated their time and talent in keeping the Archangel Attic open on Fridays! PVO is making a strong push to support the Attic this year and in the future. If you didn’t know, all the proceeds from sales at the Attic go to support our school. Contributions from the Attic to our school reduce our tuition by roughly $1450 per student. By comparison, sales of concession food items at games and tournaments reduces our tuition by only $100 per student. So if you have limited time available as a busy family, please consider working in the Attic and/or donating used items for sale. We can use your help!
Congratulations to Class of 2020 sophomore Sophia Dupras who represented Lumen Christi in the 2017 ASAA/First National Bank Cross Country Running State Championships this past Saturday at Bartlett High School. We are proud of her accomplishments and can’t wait to see how she does next year!
Our junior high soccer team was undefeated going into the championship game at the 2017 ACSAA Co-Ed Outdoor Soccer Tournament last week. Our team played their hearts out, but came up short against Birchwood Christian Academy. The team took home 2nd place in the tournament, capping off a great season. Way to go, Archangels!
So there are more reasons why a Catholic school education is important? Why, yes, there is!:
21. An opportunity to start the day out in a sacred way with the Eucharist at 7:15am in the Chapel of the Archangels
22. Hearing a consistent pro-life message in the hallways and classrooms
23. Having uniforms makes it an easy decision on what to wear each day!
24. Seeing the same friends at church that you see at school
25. Hallways that highlight and proclaim the Cardinal (Prudence, Temperance, Justice, and Fortitude) and Theological Virtues (Faith, Hope, and Charity)
Internet Safety Presentation: There will be an internet safety presentation given by Officer Fifer from the Anchorage Police Department on Thursday, October 5th at 7pm at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School in the gym. Winter Weather Reminder: Just a reminder that as winter approaches, so does the possibility for school closures. If the Anchorage School District (ASD) cancels school, so does Lumen Christi. Sometimes ASD will close some schools for weather conditions but not all schools, please listen to the radio or check ASD’s website. If Sand Lake and/or Dimond cancels school, then so will Lumen Christi.

Principal’s Update: Last week, the high school students spent two days up at St. Therese’s Camp on retreat. They spent time in reflection, group activities, Mass, Adoration, Reconciliation, and team building. Our theme was “Having an Attitude for Christ” and our students focused on ways that we can show Justice, Kindness, and Humility here at school, in the community, and in our lives. It was a great couple of days, and we hope your son or daughter shared his or her experiences upon return home.
Our junior high students stayed busy while the high schoolers were gone by cleaning up headstones at the Anchorage Memorial Cemetery, making wrist rosaries, going bowling, eating pizza, and writing Christmas letters to service men and women deployed overseas.
Congratulations to Class of 2020 student Sophia Dupras, who will be representing Lumen Christi in the 2017 ASAA/First National Bank Cross Country Running State Championships this Saturday at Bartlett High School. Sophia qualified for State with a 5K (that is 3.1 miles!) time of 23 minutes, 56 seconds! She is set to run at 1:30pm on Saturday, so hopefully we can have a large Lumen crowd cheering her on. Way to go, Sophia!!!!
Our junior high soccer team remains undefeated and finishes up their season on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of this week at the 2017 ACSAA Co-Ed Outdoor Soccer Tournament at the Center soccer fields (4855 Arctic Blvd). Good luck Archangels!

We had two students, Garrett Renfro and Sophia Dupras, run for and represent Lumen at the New Balance XC Classic meet at Russian Jack Springs park last Saturday. And this past Monday, our student body prayed the Rosary in honor and remembrance of 9/11.
Today, thanks to the hard work and commitment of our teachers and PVO, we had an awesome taco lunch! Together, we raised over $900! The contributions will go directly to relief efforts in support of the National Catholic Education Association’s “Student to Student” Campaign for Catholic communities impacted by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. More information on this national campaign can be found at http://ncea.org/sts. Way to go, Archangels!
Our Spirit Week continues and we and look forward to the Homecoming Bonfire on Friday night and the Dance on Saturday.
This weekend is also the annual St. Benedict Ministry Fair. Please see the PVO note below requesting parent and student volunteers to sing praises about our school and thank the generous parishioners of St. Benedict Parish. We could use your help!
In closing, a continuation of reasons why a Catholic school education is important:
11. Learning the connection between faith and reason
12. Sharing faith journeys with each other
13. Seeing Father Tom and Father Whitney around the school every day
14. Helping on service projects
15. Hearing Jesus’ name on a daily basis and not as a swear word

Principal’s Update: Greetings from Healy, AK! Our varsity soccer team is up here competing in the Tri-Valley Tournament through Saturday. Spirits are high despite a tough loss against Su-Valley on Wednesday. Please pray for our Archangels as they compete up north. Congrats to our junior high soccer team in their 2-1 win over Su-Valley. They remain undefeated for the season! The team is small (11 athletes) but their will is strong!
We finished a deeply moving and meaningful retreat with our Class of 2018 Seniors last week. We spent Thursday at Camp Gorsuch in team building activities and talking about being servant leaders. The students made their own dinner over the campfire and put together a plan to grow closer as a class, improve our school, and dedicate time to the greater community. On Friday, we attended Mass with the elementary and middle school students of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic School in Wasilla. Our Seniors received a tour of the school grounds and spent a couple of hours talking to the 7th and 8th graders about life in high school and how to be leaders within their school. We finished with a meal together and ended the day with few hours at the Alaska State Fair. Thanks to Father Whitney, Liz Loeffler, Debbie Brewer, Bob McMorrow, and Elise Zajicek for putting together a wonderful class level retreat. Our Seniors are an impressive group and we are all very proud of them! Take a look at the retreat on our Facebook page!
In closing, a couple more reasons why a Catholic school education is important:
6. Spiritual retreats (next one is the Sept 21-22)
7. Reading Scripture regularly
8. Praying with the entire school when disasters or tragedies occur (a special prayer for those affected by the hurricanes in Texas and Florida and the Caribbean)
9. No school on Easter Monday!
10. Learning responsibility for their own education through fundraising (sell those Gold Cards!)
Gold Cards: Money from Gold Card sales are due back into the front office by September 8th. If you need additional time to finish selling your Gold Cards, please let the office know.
