Principal’s Update:
Wow what busy week last week! Our students collected over 1100 boxes of stuffing for Catholic Social Services! This far exceeded our goal of 800 boxes. Between staff, students, and parents, we also donated 22 turkeys to the Outreach Program at St. Patrick’s Parish. And on Friday, our junior high students helped pack over 20 boxes of food in support of St. Benedict’s Parish Outreach Program. Awesome job to everyone for putting our faith into action!
This Monday, our Student Government held a pep rally to build spirit between classes. Erin Freel also came in to talk about supporting the Jingle Bell Run on Dec 9th. Erin is the Mom of Connor Freel, age 12, who is the Youth Honoree for this year’s Run. Connor was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis at age 9 and has benefitted greatly from the generosity of the Arthritis Foundation. We are working to have over 30 team members and raise over $2500 for the Arthritis Foundation for the run. We have 7 members and have raised $225 at this point, so please sign up! Our Jingle Bell Run team page can be found at: http://www.jbr.org/anchorage/lumenchristiarchangels. On Black Friday, November 24 register online and use discount code BLACKFRIDAY to save $5 on all registration types!
Advent starts on Dec 3rd. Starting on Dec 4th, we will have a communal prayer service as a school in the front hallway to start the day each morning. Perhaps you’ll also consider committing to attending daily Mass at 7:15am a couple of times a week with your son or daughter as we all prepare spiritually for the birth of Christ? Celebrating the Eucharist is a great way to start the day.
And from the entire staff of our school, we hope you have a wonderful, restful, and thankful Thanksgiving weekend. God Bless You and God Bless Our School!

Principal’s Update: For my update this week, I’d like to continue with reasons 46-50 why a Catholic school education is so important and then to briefly highlight one of our alumni who has built upon the strong foundation of her Lumen Christi education in the past 10 years. So here we go…
46. The freedom to talk about human dignity and a Creator who endowed each of us with inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
47. Moral and spiritual development based on Gospel values
48. Being able to push back against society’s materialistic, image-centric distortions of reality
49. Discovering what it means to live a “Christ-like” way of life each and every day
50. Understanding that the heart of our school is Jesus, “the way, the truth, and the life”
We want to recognize Class of 2008 alum, Aurora “Rory” Blucher. Aurora is a National Library of Medicine (NLM) Pre-doctoral Fellow in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at the Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon. After graduating from Lumen, she received her undergraduate degree in mathematics from University of Portland. According to the OHSU website, “for her dissertation work, Aurora is studying the extent of polypharmacology (or nonselective binding) displayed by currently approved drugs and using probabilistic graphical modeling techniques to explore the cellular pathway activity that results from such binding behavior. Her research interests also include adverse drug reaction prediction and drug repurposing, or finding alternate uses for existing or failed drugs.” Whew! I’m not sure what all that means, but we can certainly be proud of Aurora for all her hard work and commitment in the field of math and science after graduation! Way to go, Aurora!
This week our students are busy collecting stuffing boxes and turkeys for those in need. As we approach Thanksgiving next week, let us all be thankful for the many blessings we have in our school community, including Aurora and the over 200 graduates of Lumen who have lit a path to the future for the rest of us. God bless you!
Annual Stuffing Drive: Our stuffing ends Friday morning. If you plan to donate, please be sure to bring your boxes in first thing in the morning. Catholic Social Services is picking up the stuffing in the morning so if you bring it mid-day or at the end of the day, you will miss the pick up. Help us reach our goal of 800 boxes. Students who bring in 10 boxes will be granted a dress down day and the class with the most participation will win a prize.

Principal’s Update: This is “Holy Spirit Week” here in school. Our students wore pink on Monday to raise awareness for breast cancer. On Tuesday, we dressed in some pretty impressive Halloween costumes. On Wednesday, we celebrated Mass on All Saint’s Day, a Holy Day of Obligation, with the parishioners of St. Benedict’s. On Thursday, our students dressed as their favorite Saint, while on Friday, they showed pride by wearing Lumen apparel. We hoped to build up school spirit for the Friday night girls volleyball game against Birchwood Christian Academy. Good luck, Archangels!
We also wanted to build up spirit to support Class of 2020 sophomore Mikayla Terry as she competes in 100 Meter Individual Freestyle and the 200 and 400 Meter Freestyle Relay in the 2017 ASAA/First National Bank Alaska Swim and Dive Championships on Nov 3-4 at Bartlett High School. Good luck Mikayla!
Thank you to the families who have already volunteered to represent our school and personally invite prospective families from five local Archdiocesan parishes to our Fall Open House and Family Pizza Night on Wed, Nov 8th! Our students Ambassadors should wear their uniform and represent our school with pride. If you would like to help us out with this effort to reach out to local parishes, churches, and faith communities this weekend, see PVO News below. These Ambassador families will earn Share Hours and will be entered a drawing to win $100 off December tuition.
I am pleased to announce that we are renewing a National Honor Society (NHS) chapter here at Lumen Christi. We have been dormant for awhile, but Mrs. Craig has graciously agreed to be the NHS chapter advisor! More information to follow on membership criteria, selection process, etc.
On the occasion of All Saints Day, here is another C4 Ignite Your Catholic Faith video titled, “What’s up with Catholics and Saints?”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gl4XNK9baLU. This is a great review of what Saints should mean in our lives as persons of faith…
Finally, here are reasons 41-45 why a Catholic school education is important (and awesome):
- Daily exposure to the Bible
- Constant support and encouragement in student spiritual life
- Mass on All Saint’s Day
- Developing the whole student–morally, mentally, and physically (body, mind, and spirit)
- A rigorous academic program that helps students overcome challenges and become their best selves

Principal’s Update: We are delighted to hear folks are sharing and talking about the C4: Ignite your Catholic Faith videos we’ve mentioned the last couple of weeks. Here is another titled, “Are My Everyday Choices Important?”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGvxp35GH5Q&t=45s. A powerful message about how we should view the “ordinary” in our lives…
This past Monday, we recognized the academic successes of many of our students at an awards assembly. Our students work hard each and every day in their studies, and we take pride in the rigorous education we provide. We also acknowledged the “King of Gold Card Sales,” Class of 2023 7th grader, Sam Kaplan, who sold the most number of Gold Cards this past fall. Sam and his family are parishioners at St. Benedict’s. Way to go, Sam!
Finally, we awarded Class of 2019 junior, Julianne Estes, with the “And Then Some” award, which recognizes a Lumen Christi student who makes a significant and positive impact in the school and who goes above and beyond that which is normally expected. Julianne is an exemplary leader in our Big Archangel/Little Archangel mentoring program and Yearbook. She volunteers without hesitation, and is quietly humble in how she leads, acts, and lives out her faith. Congratulations Julianne, Sam, and to all our wonderful students who were applauded for their successes on Monday!
We have started to form a team for the Arthritis Foundation’s “Jingle Bell 5K Run” on Saturday, December 9th! Last year, TEAM LUMEN CHRISTI ARCHANGELS had over 20 team members and raised just over $900 to support finding a cure for this #1 cause of disability. Our goal this year is to have over 30 team members and raise over $2500! Will you join us and jingle for a cure? Our team page can be found at: http://www.jbr.org/anchorage/lumenchristiarchangels
I’ll take us to 40 in adding up the many reasons why a Catholic school education is awesome (don’t worry, there is more!):
36. Having a “Holy Spirit Week” to show school spirit instead of just a plain, old “Spirit Week” (next week, by the way!)
37. A Christ-like environment that cares more about students getting into Heaven than into Harvard
38. Spending seven hours a day in a faith-base community
39. Learning about all vocation options including marriage, ordained, and religious life
40. Learning about and discussing the religious and ethical implications of stem cell research, abortion, euthanasia, and other beginning and end of life issues
Blessings on you and your family!
