From the Principal:
What a special Mardi Gras gala on Saturday! It was great seeing everyone “dressed to the nines” and watching our students do a wonderful and professional job serving at the event! Thank you to all who made it a festive family event, from set up to take down.
Our next big event is the Fur Rondy Parade on Saturday, Feb 24th. We are seeking students and parent volunteers to either ride on our trailer or walk alongside handing out candy and Open House invitations to the parade goers. This is a great and fun opportunity to showcase our school to the thousands of people who line the parade route. We hope you can join us on the 24th and turn our school from being the “Best Kept Secret” to the “Most Well Known”!
As you know, we have made some changes to our Theology curriculum this year. I wanted to inform you we will undergo a review process for the 12th grade Human Dignity and Bioethics course as well as the 9-11th grade Principles and Choices supplemental curriculum. If your son or daughter has been a part of these courses this year, he or she will be asked to fill out a survey relating to course content, objectives, scope, and sequencing. This input, as well as all curriculum materials, will be reviewed to provide recommendations towards improving or modifying the courses, if necessary, for the next school year. The Curriculum Review Board will consist of at least one School Board member, the Theology Department Chair, the Dean of Academics, and others as requested. Yesterday, the Catholic bishops of Alaska published a pastoral letter reaffirming the Church’s moral teachings on human life, as well as sexuality, marriage, and religious freedom (more here: http://www.catholicanchor.org/alaska-news/alaska-bishops-reaffirm-moral-teachings-human-life-sexuality-marriage-religious-freedom/), so I feel we are on the right track incorporating these courses/curriculums into our spiritual program here at Lumen. This review is coming at a perfect time to ensure we are staying true to the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) framework for high school curriculum, the Alaskan bishops letter, and Lumen’s mission and Core Values and Philosophy. Our intent is to take the lessons learned from this first year and continually improve the new courses we offer here at Lumen, so I look forward to the recommendations and suggestions of the review board.
Have a great and blessed weekend! Stay true to your Lenten resolutions!

From the Principal:
Last week, we had a fantastic celebration for Catholic Schools Week. Thanks to all who attended the All-Parish Basketball Night on Saturday, and to those who represented our school at St. Benedict’s 10:30am Mass on Sunday! The spirit of our school was alive and present throughout the week, and especially at those final two events.
This week, there is no rest for the weary as our school has continued to be a beehive of activity!! Gala parent and student volunteers are working hard setting up and preparing for this Saturday’s Mardi Gras auction. One of our Catholic social teaching principles is the Dignity of Work. Work is about more than making a living or getting paid; it is a form of participation in the creation made by God. Deuteronomy 14 tells that the Lord blesses our work so that we may share its fruits with others. A lot of hard work has gone into this event, and it is sure to be a wonderful time for our all the members of our faith community. We look forward to seeing everyone Saturday night for the Gala! Thank you volunteers!
We also had about 15 students attend our weekly planning meeting to develop and design a Fur Rondy float for February 24th. Our student design team plans to pull a decorated snowmachine trailer behind a pickup truck. Students will wear Lumen clothing and carry signs to highlight our Mission, Core Values, and some of the extracurricular activities that we offer. We are asking for parents and students to sign up to attend the Fur Rondy Parade to either ride on the trailer or walk alongside handing out candy and Open House invitations to the parade goers. We hope you can join us on the 24th!
Finally, Lent begins next week with Ash Wednesday, February 14th. In the spirit of sacrifice and almsgiving, our Student Government is leading the way to encourage all students to only drink water during Lent. The money students save by not purchasing coffee, soda, or sugary drinks will then be donated to dig water wells in South Sudan and other parts of Africa. Ask your son or daughter about this Lenten Corporal Work of Mercy and perhaps you can participate in the challenge as a family.
Have a wonderful weekend!

From the Principal:
As we finish up Catholic School Week (CSW), thanks to all who attended the State of the School address on Monday evening. Based on the survey feedback, everyone found it informative, fun, and interesting and I look forward to keeping this annual tradition alive next year! Looking into the weekend, a gentle reminder of two final CSW events: the Archdiocesan Parish Basketball Night on Saturday, Feb 3rd from 3-6pm and our Community Mass at Saint Benedict’s on February 4th at 10:30am. We hope you can join us in embracing our Catholic social teaching call to community, family, and participation. As Romans 12:4-8 tells us: “For as in one body we have many parts, and all the parts do not have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ and individually parts of one another.” More information on these community events is below.
Our high school basketball teams have been leading the way recently in sports competitions. Our girls basketball team went undefeated to win the Birchwood Invitational a week ago, which was the first tournament won by a Lumen girls basketball team since 2007! Both the boys and girls teams went on to take second place in a recent tournament last weekend in Nikolaevsk. A special shout out to Class of 2018 senior Maeve Bakic and Class of 2019 junior Nyadeng Puoy who received all tournament girls team honors, while Class of 2021 freshman Lam Puoy was recognized for all tournament boys team honors. Nyadeng also was named tournament MVP for girls. Way to go Archangels!!!
Finally, I would like to recognize our four inductees into our new National Honor Society chapter: Class of 2019 juniors Megan Flaherty and Jaime Martin and Class of 2020 sophomores Jeannie McConnell and Sophia Dupras. In a moving ceremony surrounded by friends and family, Megan, Jaime, Jeannie, and Sophia were recognized and celebrated for their scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Each of them has made a significant impact on others and visibly lived out Lumen’s Core Values of Faith, Family, and Excellence. Well done and congratulations to our new NHS members!

Lumen Christi Community Mass at St. Benedict Parish (Sunday, February 4th at 10:30am): As Catholic Schools Week comes to a close, what a better way to celebrate our school than with the parishioners of St. Benedict’s. This is not a mandatory event, but I am requesting parents and students to attend whether you are Catholic or not. As a ministry of St. Benedict, our school benefits greatly from the generosity, support, and hospitality of the parish. This is our way of showing our deepest appreciation by celebrating the Mass with them.

From the Principal:
As we look to the start of Catholic Schools Week on Monday, please mark your calendars for the great events we have planned to celebrate our wonderful Catholic school! I look forward to seeing everyone at the State of the School on Monday, January 29th, at 7pm and Community Mass at Saint Benedict’s on February 4th at 10:30am. Be sure to also invite your friends from your home parish to our Archdiocesan Parish Basketball Night on Saturday, Feb 3rd from 3-6pm. Come cheer on our Archangel basketball teams to victory!
On a more serious note, I am asking parents to please ensure your student looks professional in his or her school uniform each day, but also for our weekly Mass on Thursday. It is especially important that our students look sharp on Monday, January 29th, for our All Catholic Schools Mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe at 10:00am. This means an ironed shirt, clean pants or skirt, appropriate length tie, neat and presentable hair, and “non-distracting” shoes and socks. In addition to our actions, our uniform is the most visible representation of our school to the community. We should strive to be a role model to others, especially to the elementary school students from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School and Our Lady of the Valley School. We will start to more strictly enforce uniform standards in coming weeks. I appreciate your assistance in helping us enforce this important aspect of our school community.
