From the Principal:
This year, Father Tom walked with our high school students through a supplemental curriculum titled, “Principles and Choices.” This high school program is based on Fr. Robert Spitzer’s book, Ten Universal Principles: A Brief Philosophy of Life Issues and helps our students master the principles of logic, ethics, and justice that inspires them to live with purpose, moral integrity, and care for human life.
Book 1 (Identity and Values-9th grade) teaches the four levels of happiness and how they relate to definitions of success, quality of life, and love. Our students have learned that Level 1 happiness is only fleeting and temporary, as it relies exclusively on the material things of this world. They have learned that eternal, everlasting, and true happiness (Level 4) can only be found in a relationship with God, as the Catechism quote below tells us. In addition, students also learn six key principles that are essential for personal growth and which build a foundation for respecting human life, especially the most vulnerable.
Book 2 (Truth and Reason-10th grade) gives students a philosophical appreciation of the existence and importance of objective truth, and lays out three principles of reason that empower them to distinguish truth from error. The principles are applied to help establish the full personhood of the unborn child.
Book 3 (Ethics and Justice-11th grade) explains six fundamental principles of ethics and justice which are necessary for civilization to exist, and offers practical advice for forming the virtuous habits necessary for true freedom. The principles are then applied to give systematic and logical arguments against abortion and euthanasia.
Throughout the course, Father Tom connects Scripture, the Catechism, and the US Conference of Catholic Bishop’s Doctrinal Framework for High School Catechetical Materials to what our students are discussing. I have sat in on many of these classes and the important lessons they are learning go against the grain of what our students see, hear, and often experience in our secular culture. We are challenging them to think critically and deeply about our faith, happiness, and the dignity and sanctity of human life. I encourage you to talk to your high school student about their impressions of this course.
We look forward to our Little A lock-in this Friday and hope to see some of you out helping on Saturday for the St. Benedict’s Parish clean up! Thanks again for your support!

From the Principal:
What an awesome and busy week it has been! Congratulations and well done to our drama students who put on two amazing performances of “And Came the Spring” to sold-out audiences over the weekend! I am always inspired by the skills, talents, and commitment of our student thespians! A special thank you as well to Mrs. Robertson (a.k.a. Mrs. Fields) for all her hard work and dedication in pulling it all together.
We had close to 20 of our students go to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School on Tuesday for our annual Science Day. Our student scientists hosted the elementary kids at various demonstration stations, including frog/squid dissection, air pressure, catapults, oobleck, and explosive gases. A great time was had by all and our students represented our school very well.
Our first iteration of our traveling “road show” for weekly Mass was a smashing success, with 6 of our students (one from each grade) attending Thursday 9am Mass at St.Elizabeth Ann Seton. Curious parishioners were happy to see our students sharing in communion with them. Next week, our plan is to attend Holy Cross Parish on Lake Otis, so we will once again be looking for volunteers.
Finally, last night, our boys and girls basketball teams had their awards banquet. Senior Maeve Bakic was recognized as the girls recipient of the “Lumen Award” given to the player who best represents the values of our school. Andrew Howard was the boys recipient of the award, reflecting the huge impact he had on our program as a homeschool student playing basketball at Lumen. Congratulations to Maeve and Andrew as well as all the other student athletes for their accomplishments both on and off the court.
This weekend, we look forward to the “Mystic Galaxy” Prom! Thanks to Mrs. Goodwin and Mrs. Methonen for helping our student government organize and plan what is sure to be a special night. Have fun and be safe!

From the Principal:
Each week, I try to highlight as many of the blessings of Lumen as possible. One of the greatest blessings we have is the opportunity to attend weekly Mass and celebrate the Eucharist, the source and summit of our Christian life (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1324). On Thursdays, we are able to pray together as a community with the parishioners of St. Benedict at the 9am Mass. Every other day of the week, our students have the option of attending Mass at 7:15am before school.
Starting next week, I’d like to expand this blessing outward and take a small contingent of our students to celebrate Mass at other parishes within the Archdiocese during this time. Our Lady of Guadalupe, Holy Cross, St. Anthony’s, and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton all have a 9am daily Mass. Our small group of students, preferably one from each class = 6 total plus a staff member, will take our Lumen bus over to one of the parishes each week and celebrate the Mass with that faith community on a rotational basis. We will start next Thursday with the 9am Mass at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Our Campus Minister, Mrs. Loeffler, will be soliciting volunteers initially, but eventually all our students will get the chance to attend weekly Mass at another parish instead of St. Benedict’s. I think this is important for several reasons:
-
This gets our students into the Archdiocesan community and allows them to see and experience the faith commitment of others outside of Lumen/St. Benedicts.
-
These parishes support our school through the “Lighting the Path to the Future” development effort. Having our students attend their daily Mass on Thursdays shows our support to their parish community and gives us an opportunity to say thank you in our actions, if not also our words.
The majority of our students will continue to celebrate Mass on Thursdays here at St. Benedict’s. For those half dozen students going elsewhere each week, they will serve as our Lumen Ambassadors to the Archdiocesan parishes. Each student will complete a field trip form with your signature and will be expected to be in proper school uniform before travel.
I’ll share my thoughts with the students on Monday, but I wanted to let you know my ideas beforehand. Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have questions. I hope to make this a volunteer effort for the remainder of this school year, with a more formal program involving all students next fall.

From the Principal:
Over this past week, we have received a lot of great news related to our recent service projects and school finances. During Lent, our teacher-sponsored Friday lunches raised nearly $500 for the H20 Project. Thanks to Student Government’s efforts in encouraging students to abstain from sugary drinks during Lent, we added an additional $206.11 to support the digging of wells in South Sudan. After getting a presentation from Mr. Thomas Awiapo from Catholic Relief Services (CRS), I challenged our students to raise at least $20 each for the CRS Rice Bowl. Together, our students raised over $500 to support the CRS efforts around the world. These numbers show the calling and commitment of our students and families to sacrifice and meet the needs of the poor and vulnerable (one of the seven Catholic Social Teaching principles).
At the same time we were working to raise money to give away to others, we received the good news that Lumen Christi will benefit from Reetz Foundation grant money next year. The Reetz Foundation, established in 1977 and is named after long-time Anchorage resident and philanthropist, the late August F. Reetz. The Foundation aids and assists in the establishment, development, maintenance, promotion, growth and preservation of parochial education within the Archdiocese of Anchorage. Although the Foundation has been dormant for many years, this year brought a solicitation of grant request proposals. After a needs assessment, Lumen submitted five grant requests that were recently approved by the Foundation. In coming weeks, we will receive $8000 in funding to support the following:
-
Campus Ministry Program: Funding will support transportation for retreats/Catholic Schools Week Mass, support to community outreach and liturgical activities, and costs associated with grade-level and sports teams retreats next year.
-
School Board development: Funding will support a professional facilitator to conduct strategic planning during the August board offsite.
-
CPR/1st Aid/AED/Bloodborne Pathogen training: Funding will support training for our full time teachers and staff to receive a two year American Red Cross certification in the most current skills.
-
Science/Technology equipment: Funding will support the purchase of wireless probeware and data collection equipment to allow our students to perform more advanced labs and increase skills for data analysis.
-
NCEA Teacher Attendance: Funding will support the attendance of one Lumen faculty member at the annual National Catholic Educational Association conference. The NCEA Conference is the largest private education gathering in the nation and brings together thousands of Catholic and other religious educators to exchange ideas and learn about cutting edge research related to educational methods.
We are very blessed by the Foundation’s generosity and look forward to additional opportunities to solicit grant money to improve and grow our school program.
Finally, for those have have attended our January State of the School addresses the past two years, you have heard me mention my desire to start an air rifle marksmanship program here at Lumen. I’m proud to say that the National Rifle Association Foundation has approved my grant request to provide equipment and materials to start the program here at Lumen. The grant consists of shooting and safety equipment and materials, not money. The list includes 8 sporter air rifles, pellets and paper targets, safety materials, and an 8-point target backstop. This will allow us to organize practice afterschool 2-3 times a week starting in the fall here at the school. My hope is that our students will be able to compete against JROTC and 4-H clubs here in Alaska as well as against rifle clubs and programs around the country virtually. My ultimate vision is to grow a varsity program over the next 3-5 years in which we could compete against Anchorage School District high schools. I will have more and detailed information later, but I wanted to share the good news now. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
Sorry for the long update, but I wanted to keep all informed of the great things going on at our school. Have a wonderful, safe, and enjoyable weekend!
