Principal’s Update:
Did you know that Lumen Christi was moved from its original Fireweed Ln location to St. Benedict’s in 2000? The invite came from Father Giebel who welcomed the school as a ministry of the parish. You can learn more about Father Giebel, the honorary “First Pastor” of Lumen Christi, on the information board on the right when you first walk into our school.
Our school was a beehive of activity this week, especially on Wednesday. Our 9th-11th graders all took the PSAT test, while our seniors took the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). These tests measure developed abilities, skills, and knowledge and will help our high schoolers better plan their college, occupational, or vocational careers. At the same time, our junior high students split into several groups and spent the morning putting their faith into action. Some of our 7th and 8th students started the day celebrating Mass at the Blessed Sacrament Monastery and meeting the Sisters of Perpetual Adoration! Other students attended weekly school Mass with the elementary school students at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School. Following Mass, one group of students helped set up fall decorations at Prestige Care home off Muldoon Road. Another group assisted grounds and beautification volunteers in setting up garden lights at St. Patrick’s Parish. A third group headed downtown to spend time at the Chancery, working in various odd jobs for the Archdiocese of Anchorage. The fourth group stayed at St. Elizabeth’s and assisted teachers in classroom tasks. A special thanks to our parent chaperones who volunteered to drive and an extra thank you to Mrs. Robertson who organized the day!
We hope you have a blessed and safe weekend!

And finally…..
2018-19 LUMEN-ary Drive starts next week! As a Lumen family, we know you already appreciate our school. This year we want you to be able to reach out to other family members and friends and ask their support for our great school! The LUMEN-ary Drive directly offsets operational costs of the school, so that we may continue to offer a solid Catholic education at an affordable price to as many families as possible. Tuition this year averages $7,250 per student, while the actual cost to educate one student is $16,500. The LUMEN-ary Drive seeks to fill that “gap” of over $9,000 per student. A successful drive is critical to our financial stability. This year we will send additional brochures and letters of explanation to you so you can distribute them further and invite others to be a Lumen supporter! Please look for the mailing next week, both to your home and email addresses. It’s easy to fulfill your pledge online. Thank you for generously supporting this year’s LUMEN-ary Drive!

Principal’s Update:
Do you know that the Sports Leader Virtue of the Week is UNITY? Unity is defined as the strength to be one in mind, heart, and soul. You can see one of the videos our students watched this week highlighting this virtue here: https://www.sportsleader.org/video/every-coach-can-learn-a-lesson-from-this-middle-school-team.
It is obvious that ALL of us can learn a lesson from this inspiring and unified middle school team!
I have been remiss in getting you information on our air rifle club/program and I know there have been a lot of questions. We have the equipment we need and I plan to hold practice in our gym. Middle school boys and girls basketball and girls volleyball have priority for practice time, but we have been able to carve out some time Monday nights from 5:30-7pm. The first practice will be Monday, Oct 22nd. We will start slowly, one night a week at first, until we can eventually try to have practice at least twice a week. I will have a signup sheet outside my office for students starting next week. It is first come, first served. We will limit practice to only EIGHT students at a time, mainly due to space limitations, equipment availability, and safety concerns. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at bross@lumenchristiak.org.
I encourage you to ask your son or daughter what they think of the new furniture in the library. Thank you to Father Tom and others who planned and organized the transformation of this space. No longer do our students have to use tired, old chairs and desks. Instead, we have access to stylish, clean, and functional desks and chairs and modern computer technology. And it is becoming clear that the “buoy” chairs are student favorites! Thanks again Father Tom!!!!
We hope you can come out to support our junior high Archangel soccer team as we compete in the Alaska Christian Schools Activity Association (ACSAA) tournament starting this afternoon with a game against Holy Rosary Academy at 5:30pm on the Kinkaid grass fields.
Finally, a hearty congratulations to Anthony Rybicki, Class of 2022, for being named the Fall 2018 “And Then Some” Award recipient! Anthony goes above and beyond to help out his classmates and others within the school. He is always polite and quick to lend a hand when needed. He exemplifies our Core Values of Faith, Family, and Excellence daily…and then some!
Have a blessed and safe weekend!

Principal’s Update:
This weekend, on Saturday, Sept 29th, the Church will celebrate the Feast Day of the Archangels (Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael). This is a special day because our patron saint is St. Michael the Archangel. We will recognize the Feast Day on Friday during our reopening of the school library at 7:45am tomorrow morning. We hope you will join us to see the amazing transformation of new furniture, new bookcases, new computers, and a new office space for our Campus Minister, Mrs. Loeffler.
Did you know that our Lumen Christi students pray the “Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel” every day at the end of the school day? You can find this prayer in our Parent/Student Handbook. This beautiful prayer, first written by Pope Leo XIII in 1884, used to be recited at the end of every Mass. Although this tradition stopped in 1970, the prayer has become more popular in recent years. Our recitation of the prayer as a school
community each day invokes the protection of St. Michael in our daily battle against the Devil and evil spirits. It is very moving to see all our students stop cleaning our classrooms and hallways at 2:29pm and join together in prayer to our patron saint before the final bell.
As you know, our students spent several days last week on retreat. Our junior high students spent two days in various faith in action activities including making sandwiches for adults at the Anchorage Rescue Mission and birthday bags for homeless youth at Clare House and Covenant House. They also picked up trash along Jewel Lake Road, cleaned up portions of the Anchorage Cemetery, went to Mass and Reconciliation, and toured the Anchorage Museum.
At the same time, our high school students traveled out to St. Therese’s Camp for an overnight retreat facilitated by Mike Sylvester and Claire Long from 5thousand (http://5thousand.com/). Since our school theme this year is Respect and Serve Others, our students reflected on what it means to respect ourselves and others as well as what it means to be called to serve others. Thanks to Father Tom and Father Whitney, we also had a beautiful Mass and Adoration and an opportunity for Reconciliation. We were even blessed by gorgeous fall weather!
Our senior class of 2019 closed out the retreat by showcasing their “I Promise” posters. These posters were developed during their August retreat on “Servant Leadership” and reflect each senior’s promise to live out and example on a daily basis our three Core Values and six Attributes of a Lumen Graduate. You should begin to see these posters being displayed around our school next week. Great job leading the way, Class of 2019!
If you have time, come out to cheer on our high school soccer team as we compete in the conference championships at Kincaid and Begich Middle School. Next week, our junior high team will compete as well.
Have a safe and blessed weekend!

This week’s SportsLeader Virtue of the Week is RESPONSIBILITY; the strength to always do what I was given to do or do what is expected of me due to my decisions. As Proverbs 28:13 states, “He who conceals his sins prospers not, but he who confesses and forsakes them obtains mercy.” As University of Alabama football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant echoed, “When you make a mistake, there are only three things you should ever do about it: (1) admit it, (2) learn from it, and (3) don’t repeat it.” We encourage you to continue the conversation with your son or daughter about what it means to them to be RESPONSIBLE. What does it mean to be irresponsible?
Have a safe and blessed weekend!

Halloween Carnival
Our sister school, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is having their annual Halloween Carnival on Friday, October 26 from 6-8 p.m. and would love to have Lumen help in running the games. Please let Mrs. Gore at our Front Desk know ASAP if your student(s) can help. This is a great way to earn share hours and support our sister school!
Junior High Retreat:
The first day of our Junior High retreat has been a success! Students made sandwiches for adults at the Anchorage Rescue Mission and ‘birthday bags’ for homeless kids and teens and Clare House and Covenant House then picked up trash along Jewel Lake Road. Tomorrow (Friday) they’ll be helping with clean up at the Anchorage Cemetery so don’t forget to have them dress for outdoor weather. Once finished at there, they’ll be walking to the Anchorage Museum. Please send them with a packed lunch as well as any rakes or landscaping tools that may help at the Cemetery. Students should arrive at the normal 7:45a start time but will be delayed getting back to the school, arriving at approximately 2:00p.
As a reminder, your Smart Tuition account will be billed $30 to cover the cost of rental vans, today’s pizza lunch, bowling, museum and service activities. You’re welcome to send money for snacks at the Museum tomorrow.
PVO (Parent Volunteer Organization)
PVO will host its first meeting of the year and it’s everything you ever wanted to know about getting your Parent Share Hours completed easily, painlessly, and nearly in one fell swoop! Mark your calendars and join Gerianne Thorsness on Tuesday, October 9th from 6:30-7:30p in the Library. Snacks will be provided.

Our next order deadline is Sunday, September 23. The Scrip program allows you to purchase gift cards at face value, which then results in an instant rebate that comes back to Lumen. Consider buying gift cards from hundreds of popular retailers to use as gifts, or pay for your everyday purchases using gift cards instead of cash or credit cards. Place your order online at www.shopwithscrip.com or fill out the attached order form and return it to the office. Rebates vary and are listed next to the name of each retailer. If you’re setting up an account on shopwithscrip.com for the first time, Lumen’s enrollment code is: B968B67E44853

Principal’s Update:
Did you know that Lumen Christi High School’s first graduating class in 1999 had only THREE graduates? Each May now, we have on average 8-12 proud graduates who walk across the stage in our gym to receive their diplomas.
Did you know that Lumen Christi has student athletes participating in high school cross country? Class of 2020 Juniors Sophia Dupras and Juan Daniel Ramirez Bastardo are both representing Lumen on the cross country trails this fall. Sophia went to the State championships last year, and Juan is an new international student from Venezuela.
While our varsity soccer team did not place in the Tri-Valley Tournament in Healy last week, our student athletes played hard against the other teams and bonded together while on the road trip. Our junior high soccer team continues to do very well, earning a win over Anchor Lutheran School on Monday.
It has been a great Spirit Week, with most of the school wearing Wild West garb on Monday and Red, White, and Blue Americana on Tuesday. And I can’t wait to see what Career Day on Friday brings!
Please consider signing up to help us out at the St. Benedict’s Festival of Ministries this weekend. We also hope you will keep our students in your prayers (and come out and cheer) as our soccer teams compete on Thursday and Friday and our students enjoy a Homecoming Bonfire on Friday and Dance on Saturday.
