Our year continues to fly by quickly! After a successful Catholic Schools Week and Annual Gala, we are approaching Spring Break in a few weeks! In the weeks to come, I hope you will help market our school for the upcoming Open Houses in March and April. Here’s how you can help:
-
Come out and support our school at the 2019 Fur Rondy Grand Parade on Saturday (see details below)! We will be handing out nearly 900 pieces of candy and invites to the Open Houses to the thousands of families that line 5th and 6th Avenues.
-
Remember that if you bring a prospective family to either of the Open Houses, we will credit $25 towards your SmartTuition balance (up to $100).
-
We also will be rolling out an extensive “boosting” marketing campaign on Facebook featuring Lumen families and students in coming days. We hope you will share those posts with all your Facebook friends and prospective families. We appreciate the assistance of the Van Tuyl, Thorsness, Crosby, Biss, Baker, and Turner families for your powerful personal testimonies and the Butcher family for pulling it all together and orchestrating the campaign.
-
Continue to direct interested families to our website. One of our parents, Shane Locke, has been busily updating items on the site, adding our promotional videos, and other enhancements to put the best foot forward in showcasing our school to the community. Thanks Shane!
It continues to be a pleasure and honor to serve this great community. Have a blessed weekend!

Archangel Sports Update:
While the Middle School Volleyball team lost a hard fought match for 3rd place in the Conference Tournament last weekend, they had an overall successful season. Many of the players were 7th graders and will be returning next year which bodes well for a strong team next year!
Co-ed Middle School Indoor Soccer starts next Tuesday, February 26th. There will be 2-3 practices per week from 3:30-4:30 with games on Friday. This is a relatively short season, approximately one month. Contact Coach Warren if you’re interested in having your 7th or 8th grader play. athletics@lumenchristiak.org
Both the Boy’s and Girl’s basketball teams dominated play last weekend with decisive victories over Ninilchik and Cook Inlet Academy. Come out TONIGHT to watch their last home games of the season against our archrival Birchwood Christian School. We’ll also be honoring our graduating seniors inbetween games. GO ARCHANGELS.
Student Spotlight:
No doubt – Archangels do amazing things both on campus and off. Congrats to the following student for off-campus excellence last week:
Sam Kaplan (8th grade), earned a rank advancement to Star Scout, as well as three new merit badges at Troop 129’s Court of Honor ceremony last week. Congratulations on your accomplishments Sam!
*Parents/Guardians – if your student has done something that deserves “Spotlight” recognition, please let Mrs. Gore at the Front Desk know!

We will show our school spirit and hand out candy and invitations to our March and April Open Houses at the same time! Principal’s Update:
We had a successful Winter Wonderland Gala last Saturday and a good time was had by all. We raised money for our Fund a Project, for our Tuition Scholarship Fund, and for general operating purposes. Many thanks to all the volunteers who help set up, take down, procure, disburse, serve, decorate, and organize the event, especially Danielle Rybicki, Julie Irving, and Michell Goodwin. We are so very blessed to have great parents here at Lumen. And our students shined through their selfless service to the community as well. Great job everyone!
Last week, I issued a “30-day Challenge.” I’ve taken Gala off but added the Fur Rondy Parade:
-
Invite a prospective family to our Open Houses on March 5 and April 4. NEW REFERRAL PROGRAM: For each new family that you bring to our Open Houses, a $25 credit will be rewarded to your tuition account (maximum credit of $100).
-
Support the LUMENARY Drive
-
Sign up to work a Friday shift at the Archangel Attic
-
Submit a positive review of the school online on Great Schools, K12 Niche, Private School Review, and Google. Those families that provide reviews will be entered to receive $50 off your tuition!
-
Come on out and walk or ride our school Fur Rondy parade float on Saturday, Feb 23rd.
-
Make a commitment as a family to attend morning Mass at 7:15am as available.
Finally, our re-enrollment campaign is underway and overwhelmingly positive. At this point, we have over 80{87587bff62748d853b25c5c00e545c389c2cc3e9e64848ccec5036484113dbfe} of our families committed to returning next year. Thank you for your quick response! Next week, we will extend a similar offer to prospective families. The great news is that our incoming 7th grade class is already filling up, even before our two Open Houses in March and April.
We wish you a restful weekend! God bless!

Archangel Sports Update:
The Junior High Volleyball Team continues their season with a Conference Tournament here at Lumen on Saturday from 8a-1p. Grab your coffee and start your morning off with some volleyball action and cheer the Archangels on!
The Anaktuvuk Pass and Fort Wainwright basketball teams proved to be formidable challengers for both the Boys’ and Girls’ teams last weekend. While neither of the Lumen teams were ultimately successful, team play was AMAZING. The Girls took on Akiachak last night and while the victory went to Akiachak, the Lady Archangels play so well together as a team it’s just a joy to watch. Come check them out tomorrow as they take on Ninilchik at 3:30p and on Saturday at 2p. The Boys’ games will follow both Girls’ games at 5p on Friday & 3:30p on Saturday. Go Archangels!
Student Spotlight:
No doubt – Archangels do amazing things both on campus and off. Congrats to the following student for off-campus excellence last week:

Archangel Sports Update:
Our Junior High Volleyball Team is amazing with their enthusiasm and ‘can-do’ spirit. Their season continues with another “round robin’ tournament at Anchor Lutheran this Friday and a Conference Tournament here at Lumen next Saturday.
Basketball season is in full swing! The Girls travelled to Nenana to play in a tournament last Friday and Saturday and the Boys hosted Point Lay on Saturday here at the school. We had a great turnout from the community with lots of extra Catholic Schools Week attendees to cheer the Boys on to victory that night. Tuesday and Wednesday both teams fought hard against Sand Point and King Cove with ultimate victories being handed to the challengers.
Tonight both teams play against Anaktuvuk Pass at the Wells Fargo Sports Center on the UAA Campus. Girls tip off at 5:30p, Boys at 7p. Friday both teams will take on Fort Wainwright with games at 1:00p and 2:30p, again the Wells Fargo Center.
Next weekend the season returns to the Lumen Gym with games against Ninilchik on Friday at 3:30p (Girls) and 5p (Boys) and Saturday at 2p (Girls) and 3:30(Boys).
Student Spotlight:

Principal’s Update:
What an awesome Catholic Schools Week so far! From Monday’s Mass with the Archbishop to our 3rd Annual State of the School to yesterday’s delivery of food and other goodies to local fire and police stations, our students, staff, and faculty have been showcasing what Catholic schools are all about: Faith, Family, and Excellence! Please remember two other highlights this weekend:
Saturday: We invite all to our All Archdiocese Parish Basketball Night at 5pm. Our boys basketball team is 10-2, so come on out and cheer them on to victory over the Point Lay/Kali Wolverines (Qavikk). Game starts at 5pm with fun halftime activities for the kids! Anyone wearing Lumen spirit wear or with a parish bulletin ticket gets in for free!!
Sunday: Please consider attending the 10:30am Mass at St. Benedicts to say thank you for their generous 18-years of support to our school community. Students in attendance should wear their Mass day uniform. We need student volunteers for lectors, altar servers, hospitality, gift bearers, and extraordinary ministers. Plug in your Super Bowl crock pots in the morning, come to Mass with us, and then settle in to watch the Rams beat the Patriots!
We also wish our Lady Archangels good luck and safe travels as they head to Nenana for a tournament!

Archangel Sports Update:
Junior High volleyball continues with another Jamboree this Friday (2/1) from 3p-6:30p in the Lumen Gym. Our newest Archangels are both doing great, and are having a great time doing it!
Outstanding news from the Boy’s basketball trip to Kodiak last weekend (1/24-1/27) – three solid wins! While there, the team spent time with students from St. Mary’s, Kodiak’s Catholic elementary school. Way to be great role models, Archangels.
Back at home, both the Girls and Boys succumbed to Nikolaevsk on Tuesday night (1/29). Wednesday night (1/30) saw the Girls fall to Kalskag in overtime, but the Boys prevailed with a decisive win after exceptional play in the 4th quarter.
The Girls left this morning for a tournament in Nenana – the entire school, students & staff – turned out to cheer them out the door and onto the road! We wish them safe driving there & back as well as successful games and a great time together as a team. Go Lady Archangels!
Mark your calendars for the upcoming games:
- Feb 2nd – Port Lay, 5p, Boys only (Girls in Nenana)
- Feb 5th – Sand Point, 5:30p-Girls, 7p-Boys
- **Feb 6th – King Cove, 5:30p-Girls, 7p-Boys (Note: this game was initially scheduled for the 4th but moved due to travel schedules)
- **Feb 7th – Wainwright, 5:30p-Girls, 7p-Boys
- **Feb 8th – Anaktuvuk Pass, 5:30p-Girls, 7p-Boys
**LOCATION CHANGE**: Games on the 6th, 7th & 8th will be held at The Arctic Rec Center (4855 Arctic Blvd.) due to Gala preparations in the Lumen gym.

Pending the outcome of that race, Tommy could be part of the AK Junior National Team! Congratulations to him on his season so far, and we’ll be rooting for him this weekend.

There are still more jobs to fill leading up to, and the night of the event, especially in disbursement at the end of the night. Check out Signup.com for ways to help: http://signup.com/go/rfKTQMC
Thank you for all of your help in making this a successful auction for our school and our students!
Student Volunteer Opportunities:
We’re still looking for more help before, during and after the Gala! We would encourage as many Junior High & High School students as possible to stay after school on 2/8 and work from 1-5p, pizza will be provided for lunch! High school students only can sign up to help the night of the event, from 4:30-10:30p. All students can sign up to help clean up the day after on Sunday, 2/10 from 10a-2p. Thanks for encouraging your kids to sign up & pitch in to help.
St. Benedict Parish is looking for high school student volunteers to help with upcoming renovations to the church sanctuary. Volunteers needed on Sunday, Feb 3rd, from 2-6pm at the church, wear old clothes and bring a facemask. (Yes, that’s Super Bowl weekend, but if you aren’t a Rams or Patriots fan, this is a great opportunity to earn Faith in Action hours supporting our host parish!)
