Principal’s Update:

During our Lenten almsgiving these past weeks, our students supported the Knights of Columbus’ “40 Cans for 40 days” drive by collecting over 1600 cans of food, over half of the total of over 3000 cans collected by St. Benedict’s Parish! The cans went to fill the shelves at St. Benedict’s Outreach Pantry and Catholic Social Services St. Francis Food Bank. I was told that the workers at both locations were overwhelmed with gratitude when the cans were delivered, with one commenting that they now would have enough food to hand out for Easter meals for families in need. Many thanks to the students who brought in cans and to the parents who made the stops at Costco, Carrs, Freddies, or Walmart!

Our 9th graders owe the 7th graders Moose’s Tooth pizza and root beer for losing the inter class competition, while the 7th graders also get a week of casual dress the week of April 29th for being the #1 class in the school for collecting over 650 cans towards our total. Well done, Class of 2024!

In addition, during our Lenten lunches on Friday, we collected over $600 for the Children’s Lunch Box program at Bean’s Cafe. This money came from our student and staff purchases of soup and bread donated by faculty members. A representative from the Children’s Lunch Box will be here in early May to receive the check from the school.

Finally, Archbishop Etienne will celebrate Baccalaureate Mass with our graduating seniors from Lumen as well as St. Benedict’s on Monday, May 6th, at 7pm. We hope you will consider attending as we will be transferring the Light of Christ from the Class of 2019 to the Class of 2020 and praying over our graduates.

Campus Ministry:

Registration for ACYC (Alaska Catholic Youth Conference) 2019 is now open. ACYC is a gathering of Alaskan teens, young adults, parents, pastoral administrators, and parish staff members. It features both Alaskan and national Catholic musicians and speakers who will help teens live as missionary disciples in their communities, whether that be rural or urban. The week will include Eucharistic liturgies, reconciliation, workshops, a concert, and yes, fun! As Pope Francis tweets: “A Christian is never bored or sad. Rather, the one who loves Christ is full of joy and radiates joy.” Teens who journey to ACYC will return radiating the joy of renewed faith and a strengthened desire to live as God’s disciples! LUMEN-ary Drive Final Update:

As we bring the 2018-19 LUMEN-ary Annual Fund Drive to a close I wanted to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to our School Board members (100 percent participation), Lumen faculty and staff (100 percent participation) and to the 32 school families who supported the LUMEN-ary Drive! This critical annual appeal helps us to keep tuition affordable for our families. School families contributed a total of $23,890 toward a budgeted need of $40,000. With donations from Saint Benedict parishioners and other friends of Lumen Christi the grand total for this year’s drive is $48,592. Thank you to families whose children have written to relatives and friends asking for their help in promoting and sustaining Catholic education. Best wishes for a moist blessed Easter Triduum. Student Spotlight:

Congrats to 7th grader Mackenna Bessler whose fast pitch softball team ‘AK Krush’ came in second at the Icebreaker Tournament in Richland, Washington last weekend. We love that our Archangels are so involved in on-campus activities, and off! Great job Mackenna, and cheers to AK Krush!

Hats off to senior Julianne Estes who represented Lumen at the All-Star Senior Basketball Tournament over the weekend as well. Julianne’s team was ultimately overtaken by another, but we couldn’t be more proud to have had Julianne selected to play and represent our school. Way to close out your senior year Julianne!

Archangel Sports Update:

Our High School Track & Field Athletes head to Seward on Tuesday, April 23rd for their first meet. We’re confident their early season training will pay off in spades as they take on other Southcentral teams. Results will be listed here next week!

We’re celebrating our High School soccer & volleyball athletes with a year end sports banquet on Wednesday April 24th, 6:30p here at the school. We’re so fortunate to have so many talented and committed athletes at Lumen.

Prom Help Needed

Mr. Palumbo could still use a few more volunteers to help set up and take down prom decorations, next Saturday night, April 27th. Let Ms. Gore in the Front Office know if you can help. Work off those last Share Hours that you just got charged for!

Speaking of prom…..Tickets are still on sale but the early bird price special is over. Tix are now $40/single and $70/couple, available for purchase in the Front Office.

2019-20 Art Classes

Ms. Rachael Androski who teaches an after-school Art Program at our sister school, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton will be teaching art as an elective for us next year. The class will be held on Tuesdays from 1:15-2:20p only, leaving the elective time slot from 1:15-2:20p on Wednesdays open for study hall. We’d heard from many who were interested in art were also reluctant to give up their study hall which they use to get a jump on homework, so this is the best of both worlds. Ms. Androski will conduct a hands on demonstration of work on Tuesday, April 23rd during 7th period for any students (or parents) who want to see what this class will look like next year! Please let Ms. Gore know (lchs@lumenchristiak.org) if you think your student might attend so enough art materials will be on hand (Reminder and fine print: you register for electives at Registration scheduled for August 6th; this will be a non-graded elective with an activity fee charged.)

2019-20 Uniforms

Our vendors school uniforms will remain the same for next year – Lands End and Tommy Hilfiger. We know there were issues with Tommy this year but have been reassured that they are ordering 175% overfill for most requested items so there should be no back orders or delivery delays like there were this year. They also indicated that they’re doing a major overhaul of their website for an improved online shopping experience. If you have any concerns or feedback (general or specific), please send them to lchs@lumenchristak.com and I’ll make sure those are shared with them. They’ll get a second shot at our business for 2019-20 but if difficulties persist, we’ll look for a second vendor for 2020-21.

National Honor Society Tutoring

Don’t forget – the National Honor Society has free after school tutoring every Wednesday from 2:30-3:30p. NHS members encourage any students with homework questions or who need help with math or writing assignments to stop in for additional help. This tutoring is offered in addition to what is available on Mondays in the Library.

Principal’s Update:

Our Principal-Parent Forum was a great success, with over 20 parents in attendance. We stayed late into the evening having a productive and informative discussion on many topics including:

Uniform vendors
Sacrament of Confirmation
Lumen-SEAS bus route
Grant opportunities
Role of the Parent Volunteer Organization
Undergraduate/AP credit opportunities for high school students

Other areas of discussion involved looking at several things going into next year, including evaluating the homework load/schedule for our junior high students, our cell phone/digital device policy, and improving our communication to families about athletic activities and events. I’ll also be discussing with our staff ways to offer “intensives” during 7th period on Tues and Weds. These are expected to be 4-6 week non-credit classes that would be offered on a limited basis (6-8 students) as an alternative to study hall, yearbook, art, and drama. Ideas suggested/being pursued include first aid/CPR certification, hunter safety orientation, basic automotive skills, cooking/culinary arts, book or poetry club, or winter/outdoor survival skills, to name a few. I also suggested to parents that the school could benefit from a Parent Ambassador Program, whereby families agree to be our school’s advocate at local parishes and churches (advertise about our Open Houses, speak at Masses and services, host prospective families from the parish/church, etc.). We will be exploring this as a means to increase enrollment with another way for families to earn the majority of your Share Hours next year. Finally, we owe the Class of 2020 a decision soon on where our maroon Senior sweaters will come from for next year.

I closed the meeting by sharing with parents that our School Board is committed to developing a 3-5 year strategic plan for our school, and would like to solicit parent input in how we can add/change/improve our school in three areas: Faith, Family, and Excellence. Your feedback and comments will assist the Board in identifying key objectives and achievable goals to grow and improve the school over the next several years. The survey can either be completed in writing (see attachment) or online at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CPHD7NV. The survey will close on Wed, April 24th, so thanks in advance for your time and assistance in helping with this strategic planning for our future!

Thank you as well to those who attended our Forum. I really enjoyed our conversation and I deeply appreciate your love for our school, your questions, and your feedback. The next Forum is scheduled to take place in September, in the first few weeks of the next school year.

Archangel Sports Update:

Our Middle School Co-Ed team swept the Alaska Christian Schools Activity Association Indoor Soccer Conference Tournament this past weekend, concluding an undefeated season! GO ARCHANGELS! Another feather in the Lumen sports cap!

Our High School Track & Field Athletes head to Seward on April 23rd for their first meet of the season. Details are still being worked out with other teams for our first Middle School meet. Stay tuned for details!

2019-20 Calendar (What? Already?)

The 2019-2020 School Year Calendar has been finalized and is posted on the School’s website. New this year are a Sports Calendar and an Activity Calendar which is still being finalized. The Activity Calendar will highlight events like Spirit Week(s), Class Retreats, as well as special events both on and off campus. Stay tuned!

Student Faith in Action Hours

Anchorage is hosting the 2019 Veterans Affairs Golden Age Games (VAGAG) June 5th – 10th and is in need of hundreds of volunteers. An estimated 500-800 veterans aged 55 & older will be here and participating in different events at the Dena’ina Center, Egan Center, Sullivan Arena & Bartlett High School. This is a great way for all of us to honor those who have served, and is a great way for Lumen students aged 14 and up to get a jump on their Faith in Actions hours for next year! Jewel Lake Expansion Project

You might have noticed some initial road work along Jewel Lake, or excavators in our parking lot – they’re both part of the overall “Jewel Lake from Strawberry to 88th” road widening project. It’s our understanding that any significant road closures will happen over the weekends and not impact school traffic but please be alert for any new traffic patterns just in case.

PROM

This year’s “A night in Hollywood” Prom is set for Saturday April 27th from 8pm to 11p at Viking Hall. Tickets are on sale in the office, single = $35/couple = $65. After tomorrow the price goes up to $40/$70. Prom is open to students grades 9-12.

Student Volunteer Opportunity! On Friday April 12th, Lumen’s National Honor Society will be helping Catholic Social Services prepare decorations for their May 11th Annual Charity Ball. Any and all students interested in the service opportunity should ask Mrs. Craig for a permission form. Vans will be leaving at 12:45pm and we will return by 3:15.

Principal’s Update:

We are at the halfway point of our Lenten journey and less than two months to go in the school year! The snow is melting, the daylight is staying with us longer, and spring is emerging more and more each day. I don’t have to tell you that this is also a busy time in our school.

Our students have been challenged to participate in the Knights of Columbus’ “40 Cans for Lent” food drive by bringing in as many cans of food as they are able. I know that the 7th grade class is competing with the 9th grade class for Moose’s Tooth pizza and root beer! I have challenged all our classes as well, with the grade level winner of the challenge receiving an entire week of casual day/dress down after Easter!

Our students are also encouraged to save their spare change for their Catholic Relief Services’ “Rice Bowl.” The world-wide charitable program has been around since I was in grade school, and a great way for our students to give alms during Lent. I also know many students have been bringing in old shoes for the “Kicks for Kids” used shoe drive that a couple of our Lumen students are spearheading for their Confirmation class.

I also want to remind everyone that we have at least two academic tutoring opportunities each week here at Lumen, if your son or daughter needs additional assistance. Mrs. Lauren Rannals, Lumen Class of 2011, provides tutoring every Monday after school. In addition, several members of our National Honor Society chapter have volunteered their time to tutor other students every Wednesday after school. As projects become due, assignments are given, and final exams loom on horizon, I hope you will take advantage of these two FREE opportunities for additional help.

Finally, a reminder that we have our final Open House on Thursday, April 4th, so please invite and attend prospective families and get a $25 per family discount on your tuition. And if you are available on April 9th, I’ll be hosting a Principal-Parent Forum for any interested parents to come and discuss or ask anything related to our great school. Have a great weekend!

Campus Ministry:

Tonight “Unplanned” begins showing at the Regal 16 (Tikahtnu) and Century 16 (36th Ave) Theaters. This is the story of Abby Johnson, former Clinic Director for Planned Parenthood and Planned Parenthood’s 2008 “Employee of the Year.” ”Unplanned” tells her journey to enlightenment and conversion. This would be a great movie to see with your teens during Lent.
Catholics United for the Faith is hosting speaker Glen Beigel in the upper banquet hall at Gallo’s Mexican Restaurant at 8615 Old Seward HWY tonight at 7p.m. Glen will be exploring strategies for raising our kids to be faithful Catholic Adults. The evening will include a 45-minute talk, followed by a question and answer session until 8:30 p.m. For more information, visit the Catholics United for the Faith (Anchorage) Facebook page.
St. Benedict Parish is hosting an Italian dinner night and auction at 6pm on Saturday, March 30th, in the Parish Hall to raise money for World Youth Day Portugal 2022. Tickets can be purchased at the door.

Thank you to the 27 families who have supported the LUMEN-ary Annual Fund Drive! If you have not already done so, please support this critical drive in a way that represents a sacrifice for you. School families have contributed a total of $18,490 toward a budgeted need of $40,000. Thank you to families whose children have written to relatives and friends asking for their help in promoting and sustaining Catholic education. As a reminder, please remember that the tuition you pay only covers 40-percent of the actual cost of educating your child. Archangel Sports Update:

Track continues with practice from 3:30 – 5:00p, M-Th. Spring has sprung (the earliest in 30 years, says the weatherman) – it’s a perfect time to be running outside in sun!

Jr. High Soccer has games tomorrow at 4:00 and 6:00p, here at Lumen. Come cheer our Archangels on – concessions available (except for hotdogs ~ it’s Lent!)

Baccalaureate Mass for graduating seniors has been moved from Wednesday, May 8th to Monday, May 6th, at 7pm at St. Benedict’s. Please note this important date change! Graduation date remains the same – Thursday, May 9th.

Upcoming Testing

Eleventh graders will be taking the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) Test on Tuesday, April 2nd and 7th & 8th graders will be taking the PSAT on Wednesday, April 3rd. Please make sure your students are well rested for these important test days.

PROM

This year’s “A night in Hollywood” Prom is set for Saturday April 27th from 8pm to 11p. If you’re interested in helping out with set up and take down please email Mr. Palumbo at bpalumbo@lumenchristiak.org or Anne Gore at lchs@lumenchristiak.org. Prom is open to students grades 9-12 and we could use as many hands as possible to make this a special night of lasting memories for our students (plus it’s a great way to receive Share Hours, for those parents who still need them!) Shoe Drive

The “Kicks for Kids” used shoe drive continues, please send in any outgrown/no longer worn shoes in decent condition to support this Confirmation project. It’s a great way to spring clean your closets!

Texas Roadhouse

National Honor Society Tutoring

The National Honor Society will be offering free after school tutoring every Wednesday from 2:30-3:30p. NHS members encourage any students with homework questions or who need help with math or writing assignments to stop in for additional help. This tutoring is offered in addition to what is available on Mondays in the Library.

Lumerary Drive Update:

Thank you for the many ways you support our school. Please remember that tuition you pay only covers 40-percent of the cost of educating your son/daughter. The LUMEN-ary Drive helps us close the gap between tuition and the real cost ($16,500) of educating a student at Lumen. At the moment less than 50-percent of current families have supported this critical annual appeal. Thank you to all who have contributed to this appeal. If you have received a reminder letter thank you for making a donation as your means allow. We are at a critical part of the school year and are striving to keep tuition afforadable for all families. Archangel Sports Update:

Track & Field starts Monday the 25th. This is for Jr. High & High School school students and need runners of all distances as well as shot & discus throwers. The first practice will be Monday at 3:30-4:30, a full practice schedule will be handed out then. Contact Coach Warren with questions at athletics@lumenchristiak.org

Indoor soccer for Middle School started this week. Practices are from 5-6p on Monday and Wednesday and 4:30-5:30 on Tuesday. Students who are involved with track can simply stay and put those running skills to work on the soccer field! Games & rallies will always be on Fridays and it’s not too late to join the team! Lenten Soup Lunches

Starting tomorrow, March 22nd, we’ll be on our “Friday Lent Schedule” which means dismissal 15 minutes later at 12:35p vs. normal 12:20p. Staff will also be providing (meatless) soup and bread for all students prior to dismissal!

Lunchtime Trivia Contest

Mrs. Brewer started “Lunchtime Trivia” (Lumen’s version of pub trivia) in her room at lunchtime. Encourage your students to get a team together and play for prizes which will be awarded both weekly and quarterly.

Shoe Drive

Two of our students working towards Confirmation are conducting a shoe drive for “Kicks for Kids,” a non-profit shoe recycling program. K4K partners with individuals, school districts, businesses and partners throughout Alaska to collect used shoes, then washes and re-distributes them back to schools for kids in need. Over 3,000 pair have been distributed in the past 3 years! Please send in used shoes of any size to support their efforts.

PROM

This year’s “A night in Hollywood” Prom is set for Saturday April 27th from 8pm to 11p. If you’re interested in helping out with set up and take down please email Mr. Palumbo at bpalumbo@lumenchristiak.org or Anne Gore at lchs@lumenchristiak.org. Prom is open to students grades 10-12 and we could use as many hands as possible to make this a special night of lasting memories for our students (plus it’s a great way to receive Share Hours, for those parents who still need them!) Set up is from 10a – 1p and clean up is from 11p – 1a at Viking Hall, 8141 Briarwood Street.

Principal’s Update:

A special thanks to the 29 Lumen students, a dozen or so younger children and siblings, AND the 25+ parents and adults who showed up on last Saturday’s sunny morning to walk in the Fur Rondy Parade! It was awesome to have so much of our community showing pride in our school. I already have parents and students discussing the need for a bigger float next year! Congratulations to the Class of 2023 (8th grade) who had the highest percentage participation; they will get Moose’s Tooth pizza and root beer for lunch on Monday, March 4th! Way to go 8th Grade Archangels!

As we go into the last few days before our March 5 Open House, please remember that if you bring a prospective family to either of the Open Houses, we will credit $25 towards your SmartTuition balance (up to $100). We also hope you will share our daily Facebook posts with your friends.

We regularly survey our community to seek feedback and comments on how we are doing as a school. We use this data to improve our programs and for our accreditation through AdvancEd. This spring, we are seeking your input on our Catholic identity and how we stack up against the 9 defining characteristics of Catholic schools according to the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. Finally, we wish our boys and girls basketball teams success in the Regions tournament this week. Lumenary Drive Update:

Please remember the critical importance of the LUMEN-ary Drive to the financial stability of our school. At present,approximately 25 school families have contributed approximately $10,000 toward our goal of $40,000. The LUMEN-ary Drive is one of the “Big Five” items outlined by our Principal as key areas of support needed for our school to thrive. Thank you for the ways you have already supported our school. Please remember: Tuition accounts for only 40-percent of the real cost to educate a student at Lumen for one year. Archangel Sports Update:

Middle school co-ed indoor soccer (Futsal) starts next week, Monday March 4th with practice from 4:30-5:30 in the gym. A full practice schedule will be distributed that day, students should bring non-marking sole gym shoes or indoor soccer shoes (no cleats), shin guards and water for all practices.

Game and rally days (all played at Lumen) will be as follows:

1. Thursday, March 7 – 3 to 6 pm (due to Spring Break)

2. Friday, March 22 – 3 to 6 pm

3. Friday, March 29 – 3 to 7 pm

4. Conference tournament on Saturday, April 6 from 9 am to 2 pm

Both Basketball Teams traveled to Soldotna yesterday for the Peninsula Conference Boys & Girls Championship Tournament. The Boys knocked back a resounding victory over Kodiak on Wednesday night and will tip off against Ninilchik tonight, Thursday, at 7p. The Girl’s fought hard against Ninilchik and came up short by just 3 points Wednesday night, and will play a tough game against Birchwood tonight at 5:30p. Win or lose in that game, the Girls have had an awesome season and never give up! Stand by for “Remind” updates on the status of play!

Student Spotlight:

No doubt – Archangels do amazing things both on campus and off. Congrats to the following student for off-campus excellence last week:

Kateri Everard (7th grade) competed in the New Mexico State Championship Feis and the Feis on the Rio Grande. Kateri placed in most of her dances at these Irish dance competitions including two 1st first place medals, four 2nd place medals, three 3rd place medals, and several 4th and 5th place medals. Congratulations, Kateri, on your dedication and awards!

Toby Agosti (9th grade) recently earned his Boy Scout Life Rank for St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s Troop 104. Additionally, his Anchorage Youth Soccer Club team “Arsenal ’04” placed 3rd in the Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup International Showcase soccer tournament last weekend. Way to go Toby!!

Jack Schroder (9th grade) and his hockey team made it to the All-City Tournament …they were down by one goal but with 1.9 seconds to go, scored, tying the game and sending things into overtime. But a penalty then left only 4 players on Jack’s team on the floor and the other team snuck a goal in. Congrats to Jack and his team for a nail-biting game and hard fought battle for second place!

The BIO Lab needs help!
