Dodgeball, Open House, Chocolate Challenge!
On Friday, November 15th, the school will be hosting an Archdiocesan-wide Dodgeball Tournament. Organized by the Archdiocese but held here in our NCAA regulation sized gym, this promises to be a really fun night not just for our Lumen families, but all those who will be visiting our school as part of games or as your guest at our modified “open house.” So what’s it all about?
PART 1: DODGEBALL
The Dodgeball team rules are simple: 3 boys/3 girls per team. Can only find 4 girls and 2 boys or 2 girls and 4 boys? Not to worry. Want 3 men/3 women? Great – adult teams welcome too. Are you a 6 person family of all ages that wants to play together? Awesome – make it so. Teams will be matched for play the night of the tournament according to male/female ratio & assumed ability (we promise elementary school teams won’t be matched against the Dimond Baseball Team!)
The winning team gets to take home an awesome trophy for the year, there will also be awards for the Best Team Spirit & Best Uniform.
Please register your team(s) if you plan to participate: https://forms.gle/4M7ABe8S8625N6gu5. You don’t need to submit player names, Archdiocese organizers simply need to know who to expect so they can plan appropriately. Players may only participate on one team in order to keep the playing field level. Questions about the Tournament can be directed to Matthew Beck at 907-297-7734.
PART 2. “OPEN HOUSE” (kind of, not really)
Experiencing the Lumen school community first hand has proven to be a major selling point for families considering enrollment. As a result, we’re scrapping our traditional fall Open House with its formal tours and hosting an informal night of community building instead.
Prior to the start of the Dodgeball games we’re inviting all Lumen families and their guests to join us for dinner from 6p-7p at the school. Thanks to several amazing family sponsors* we’ll be bringing in an Olive Garden Pasta Bar for all to enjoy. Please invite a family or two with Lumen aged students who might be interested in learning more about the school. You (or your student) can give them a tour, they’ll meet teachers and staff, get fed and maybe even play dodgeball!
(Become a sponsor of this first annual pre- dodgeball tournament dinner! $250 – only three sponsor slots left. Call/text Lumen parent Shareen Crosby at 907-317-8811. Businesses or families welcome.)
3: And finally……CHOCOLATE CHALLENGE
Starting on Tuesday, November 12th, there will be boxes of brownie mix in the office. Take a box home, add a secret ingredient and return your creation to the Pasta Dinner on the 15th. There will be a “taste off” with a prize awarded to the most-best-tastiest-delicioius brownies. Get creative and see if your baking skills are up to the challenge!
Stay tuned for additional details on what will be a busy November night, but mark your calendars now – you won’t want to miss it.

Calling all bakers!!! Sign up to make a dessert our Gala’s infamous Dessert Dash. Each year we ask restaurants, bakeries and home bakers to make something sweet for us – these treats literally bring in thousands of dollars as part of our fundraising event! Principal’s Update:
We have been blessed to have local and national news coverage of our new cell phone policy. From KTUU, KTVA, and ADN to Newsweek, People Magazine, Yahoo and countless other news agencies in the lower 48, the story of our small school has gone viral! Our teachers report more focused and engaged students, while our passing periods and lunch time are filled with the laughter, joy, and friendly conversation of classmates and peers enjoying face to face interaction. Removing cell phones from the school day provides us with nearly 7 hours of distraction-free time to continue our focus on the spiritual, mental, moral and physical education of our students. In the end, we want all our students to succeed, so this policy change is helping us achieve that goal. At the same time, our school’s story is causing families and other communities around the nation to talk about the benefits and harmful effects of cell phones. In starting a national conversation, we are Lumen Proud!
Next week is a crazy week so please pay attention to the schedule above and the details below. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask me or Anne at the front office.
Virtue of the Week:
This week’s Sportsleader Virtue is VALOR: The strength to live with great courage in the face of danger. The opposite of VALOR is Fearfulness: the weakness to avoid doing what is right or the best due to feelings, pressure, or circumstances.
Campus Ministry:
The Campus Ministry Office is located in the school library,
students and parents are always welcome to stop by!

9th grade retreat will be Nov 15. Details will be sent home October 14th.

Prayer Spot:
Please remember the following in your prayers this week:
-
Victims of violent crimes
-

Archangel Sports Update #Lumenproud:
The High School Soccer season ended with the Region II Conference last weekend – the Archangels finished 5th overall, ending with a sweet 5-3 victory over the Holy Rosary Academy Knights (knocking them out of the tournament) way to go Archangels! It was a great season and we hope you’re as proud of your season as we are!
High School Girls Volleyball practice continues with their first game of the season scheduled for Monday, October 21st at Birchwood. The next action will be the ever-popular “Spiketacular” tournament on October 24th – 26th at the O’Malley Sports Center.
Junior High Basketball (boys and girls) starts MONDAY, October 21st. If your student is hoping to play, please contact Coach Warren at atheletics@lumenchristiak.org
Due to the gym floor still under reconstruction, basketball practice will be at the O’Malley Sports Center (11001 S Center Drive…by “Get Air” in south Anchorage). Bus service will be provided from the school to the Sports Center, all players should come to school in the morning with shorts to change into, water bottles and extra snacks to hold them over until 5p. Parents must pick up their students at the Sports Center, there will be no return bus service to Lumen.
Special note for families with SEAS 5th/6th graders ‘playing up’: the Lumen bus that leaves here at 3p and drops Lumen students at SEAS will then take the SEAS ‘playing up’ players and drop them at the Sports Center in time for 3:30p practice. Parents must pick up at the Sports Center, there will be no return bus service to SEAS.
Note that while basketball practice begins on Monday the 21st, we’re waiting for final confirmation from the Sports Center on which days of the week we’ll be able to have practice, beyond our Monday start date. Details will be shared as soon as we have them.
The first Junior High basketball games of the season will be just a few days after practice start, at the SuValley tournament in Talkeetna on October 25th & 26th. This is a unique, overnight away game/tournament for Junior High players who normally don’t get to travel. Details will be coming from Coach soon.
School Announcements:
NEXT WEEK
As noted above, next week’s schedule is completely crazy. The most important takeaways are:
-
Monday – Mass day (normally on Thursday – wear your best uniform & mass shoes)
-
Tuesday – Normal Tuesday class schedule of periods 1, 3, 5 & 7, but for a mere $2 donation for Breast Cancer Awareness month, your student can dress down – provided whatever they’re wearing is pink!
-
Wednesday High School – PSAT Testing. Please make sure your high schoolers get a good night’s rest on Tuesday and breakfast Wednesday morning.
Wednesday Junior High – Offsite service day to ensure high schoolers have a solid distraction free test zone. See below for Jr. High Service Day details.
Wednesday Jr. High & High School – EARLY DISMISSAL! To culminate a long morning/early afternoon of testing for high schoolers and busy work morning/early afternoon for 7th & 8th graders, we’re allowing early school dismissal at 12:30. For families who can pick up kids at 12:30, great! For those who can’t, there will be an extended study hall/work period until normal dismissal at 2:30p. This would be a great time for kids to get caught up on all outstanding work prior to the end of the quarter on October 24th & 25th.
-
Thursday – Wednesday class schedule of periods 2, 4, 6 & 7.
-
Friday – NO SCHOOL! All district school inservice day. (*See below for a great opportunity for our Lumen girls during inservice*)
Don’t hesitate to call the Office at 245-9231 if you have any questions about next week.
Junior High Service Day – Wednesday
In order to keep noise down and provide the best distraction-free-test zone possible for our HS PSAT testers, Jr. High students will be out of the school and participating in community service projects. *Note that we need all JH students here at 7:30a for a 7:45a sharp departure off campus.*
“Dream, Girl” – Inservice Opportunity – Friday
ALL of our Archangel girls and young women have been invited to attend a free event at Bear’s Tooth on Friday, October 18th from 1p-3p. Gala
Our “Under the Stars” 25th annual Gala will see our gym transformed into a spectacular setting. Our guests will be surrounded by swirls of silver and navy and stars will be twinkling all around. If you’ve never attended our gala, you’ll be amazed at how beautiful our space becomes. Lumen parent Michell Goodwin magically transforms the gym and hallway but lots of help is needed to make it happen! Sign up to help online – https://signup.com/go/BfFnxAD for one of the following positions:
-
Help prepare decorations in weeks prior to the gala (spots are located under 2/6 on the SignUp)

-
We are looking for a Decorations Chair to take over leading our gala decorations in the coming years- this includes setting the theme with the auction co-chairs and seeing the vision through. Principal’s Update:
What a great week! On Tuesday, we inducted Class of 2020 Seniors Karin Helgeson and Mikayla Terry into our National Honor Society chapter. Both of these ladies have excelled here at Lumen and well-exemplify the NHS traits of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.
A thank you to all who purchased pizza for lunch last week to support the victims of Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas. Thanks to the efforts of Class of 2020 Senior Nathan Goodwin, our Student Leadership Board Service Committee Chair, we raised over $120 to send to the National Catholic Educational Association’s Student to Student campaign. It was fun watching Class of 2025 7th grader Nery Vargas-Botello and other students walk away with 5-6 slices of pizza, only to give the slices away to students that did not have any or to their “Big A” mentor.
Many thanks to Laura and Clay Butcher, who put out a press release on our cell phone policy and garnered news coverage from Channels 2, 11, 13 and ADN! Please look for these news spots on TV and in print and share them on your social media!
Finally, prayers for our high school soccer team as they head out to compete in the regional championships in Palmer from Thursday to Saturday. It has been a long season, so we wish them good luck!

Archangel Sports Update #Lumenproud:
Our Junior High Soccer Team finished out their tournament last weekend with a decisive win against Anchor Lutheran and an overall rank of 5th in the Conference. Shout out to all of our 7th & 8th grade players (and 6th grade teammates from SEAS who played up) who made this a great season. You braved moose on the fields, rain, wind, freezing tournament mornings and what probably seemed like endless practices (especially for the parents who had to drive and pick up!) Congrats to all of our JH Archangels…we’re so proud of you!
Our High School team had their last regular game of the season on Saturday against Cook Inlet Academy. While they lost in the end, they’re fired up to hit the fields at the Region II State Tournament which starts tomorrow in Palmer. Cheer them on in person (or in spirit from afar) as they go head to head with their competitors from other Region II schools. The Tournament and their season end on Saturday – watch here for updates next week.
Next up on the Sports Calendar? High School Volleyball (girls) and Junior High Basketball (boys and girls.) Stay tuned for details!
School Announcements:
TIES!!
New ties have finally arrived from Tommy Hilfiger and are on sale in the office for $20. Tie charges can be added to your SmartTuition account, or paid by cash, check or credit card.
Gala
Our 25th Anniversary Gala will be on February 8th, 2020 and planning is underway!
Many of you heard last week during the Principal-Parent Forum that we are looking for someone interested in taking on a Gala/Auction Co-Chair role for future years. The best way to learn this role is to shadow our co-chairs this year. This is an important fundraiser for our school and coordinating this event is a large, but rewarding task.
What is a Gala/Auction Co-Chair? The co-chairs plan and lead the gala and auction. They are goal oriented, result driven and provide motivation for committee chairs and volunteers. They delegate tasks and are flexible to allow for adjustments along the way.
Some Gala/Auction Co-Chair responsibilities include:
-
Recruitment, support and oversight of all committee chairs and/or volunteers
-
Motivating and inspiring committee chairs and volunteer
-
Set up auction timetable with deadlines
-
Determine logistics of the event and carry out with help of committee chairs and volunteers
-
Maintaining procurement list and procurement plan for auction items
-
Corresponding with past and present donors and supporters
-
Troubleshooting anything that comes up
-
Maintaining and updating all event-related documents and records
Does this sound like something you would be interested in?! If so, please contact Mr. Ross or one of the co-chairs in the Gala office- gala@lumenchristiak.org or 273-1530.

Principal’s Update:
I often say that even though we are a small school, we have so many wonderful and awesome things going on. Our high schoolers spent a great two days in prayer, reflection, Adoration, Mass, and fun activities last week at St. Therese’s Camp. There was laughter, joy, happiness, as well as a few tears. A special thanks to Mrs. Loeffler, our Campus Minister, for coordinating this annual and special event. If you haven’t already, I would encourage you to talk with your son or daughter about their experience. At the same time, our junior high students spent some time in community and fellowship as well, going bowling, eating pizza, feeding the hungry by making PB&J sandwiches for Brother Francis Shelter, and honoring the dead by cleaning up gravesites at the Anchorage Memorial Cemetery. What a blessing it is to have these extracurricular opportunities to grow in faith, family, and excellence.
I want to thank all the parents who attended our Principal-Parent Forum earlier in the week. This event continues to grow in attendance, and with the wine and appetizer social beforehand, we were able to spend some time growing in family and community as well. I realize that I might have monopolized a good portion of the evening, so if you were not able to address an issue, or you just weren’t able to attend but had a question or comment, please feel free to contact me at any time at bross@lumenchristiak.org or 907-273-1503. I look forward to hearing from you! Thank you again!

Archangel Sports Update #Lumenproud:
The Junior High team had an amazing game last Thursday, crushing Anchor Lutheran 10-1. Over the weekend there were a mixture of highs and lows both teams lost to Su-Valley and while our Jr. High lost to Holy Rosary Academy on Monday at 4p,, the HS team ended up in a tie against their HS team at 6p. .
The Junior High season ends this weekend with a tournament starting today in Palmer. Check here for final scores and standings next week.
Our High Schoolers have one final away game on Saturday at 2p against Cook Inlet Academy and their season will conclude October 2-5 at the Region II State Tournament.
Thanks again to parents who drive to away games and juggle busy after school practices in support of our teams. You’re a big part of our athletic program success!

Gala
Hopefully by now you’ve all received a Save-the-Date postcard for our February 8th Gala. This event, with its’ sit-down dinner, dessert auction, 250+ item silent auction and live auction is our primary school fundraiser and social night of the season. In addition to earning close to $100,000 for the school each year, the Gala is a fun evening and a chance to showcase our school and school students to the nearly 300 guests in attendance. Revenue earned supports our operating budget and funds our scholarship account in addition to special projects like the Smart Boards in each classroom. It takes all of us coming together to make this event successful and there are many opportunities to help – before, during and after. If you’re planning on attending, think about any guests you could invite that would be interested in learning about and supporting our school. The SignUp to volunteer is online –https://signup.com/go/BfFnxAD and we are always available to help find the perfect job for you!

Principal’s Update:
Our school gym in now closed as the folks from Alaska Industries begin to tear out the old floor and remediate any damage underneath. As mentioned last week, we expect this project to take over a month, so we appreciate your patience, and your prayers, as we replace our gym floor.
Please pray for all our students, staff, and chaperones as we spend Thursday and Friday on high school retreat at St. Therese’s Camp or doing junior high activities here in the school and around town. While we are taking time out of the academic classroom these days, we have found that holding these retreats early in the school year help build community and camaraderie among our students that pays dividends for the rest of the year.
Thanks to everyone who was able to help for high school homecoming and/or bring your junior high students to movie night last week. Both events were well attended and it seems like the kids all had a great time.
Finally, I look forward to seeing as many parents as possible for our first Principal-Parent Forum of the school year next Tuesday, September 24th. Social hour (wine and snacks) starts at 6:30pm in the Student Room, with the official meeting beginning at 7pm in the library. I’ll be sending out a more detailed proposed agenda on Monday, but I see us discussing uniform vendors, the future of the Parent Volunteer Organization, Gala support, gym and bus updates, cell phone policy, recruitment and retention efforts, social/family opportunities, and more. I hope to see you here!
