Principal’s Update:
I hope you enjoyed my video Principal’s Update last week. I intend to alternate my updates this way going forward. This week, you get to read!
By now, most of you have heard that the Mat-Su Veterans have decided to cancel their November Gun Show held over Thanksgiving. This is due to delays in painting and coating the gym floor. With several unfortunate delays already, I did not want to risk the floor not being fully prepared to be covered and walked upon next weekend. My biggest fear was pulling up the floor cover after the Gun Show to find damage, which could have been averted if we had just waited a few more days. We’ve not been able to support our junior high basketball program and girls volleyball team at home this fall, and I did not want to risk impacting the varsity basketball season, which starts Dec 4. So we will let the gym floor get finished, dry and cure with enough time to be ready for our teams to practice on the brand new court.
Our November 20th Open House went awesome! We had 10 families come through, which is more than we have ever had for a fall open house. A special thanks to Ms. Gore, Mrs. Crosby, Mrs. Butcher, and our Ambassador students for supporting the event, as well as to our teachers, who give so much of their time to the school already. Please pray for these families as they make their decision where to send their son or daughter. We were all there ourselves at some point.
Every year, we conduct several surveys of parents, students, and staff in an effort to know where we are doing well and where we need to improve. Your thoughtful answers help us to provide the best environment for your child. This year’s survey is here: http://bit.ly/ClimateParent. Thank you in advance for filling this out as soon as possible!
I hope you have a wonderful and restful weekend!

Principal’s Update:
Our first ever Dia de los Muertos celebration last week was a great success! Thank you to all who stopped by to enjoy the food, listen to music, tour the altars dedicated to loved ones, and share in the rich tradition of this cultural event. There has been discussion about putting together a Cinco de Mayo festival, so keep an eye out for an announcement next spring!
By now you have received your letter from the School Board highlighting the priorities for this year, as well as laying out a strategic direction for the school for the next 3-4 years. Recruitment of new families and students is a top priority As we look towards our Fall Open House and Information Night on Wed, Nov 20th from 6-8pm, we need your help. Word of mouth marketing is the most powerful method of encouraging new families to check out our school. YOU TRULY ARE THE MOST EFFECTIVE AMBASSADORS OF OUR SCHOOL!
My challenge to you: Over the next two weeks, go up to a family you know, or don’t know, at church, in the grocery line, in your neighborhood, at an event, where ever, and ask them if they have ever heard of Lumen Christi. Invite them to our Open House on the 20th. Talk to them about our small class sizes, student centered instruction, caring and compassionate teachers, solid academics, wonderful student body, cell phone policy, and bus transportation to and from South Anchorage. Be sure to mention that we have generous financial assistance available to all families in need.
I just did this last weekend at St. Elizabeth’s. I saw a family I did not recognize and struck up a conversation at the end of Mass. As it turns out, the family is brand new to the area and is very interested in Catholic education. No, they had not heard of Lumen Christi, but yes, would very much love to attend our upcoming house. After giving them my business card, I followed up with a text message and a link to our website. Thanks to a bit of courage (I know I’m the Principal, but I still get nervous), we may have a new 9th grader in our school with a rising 7th grader on the way next year.
Would you be willing to do the same? If all of our families reached out to one other family and invited them to our Open House, we’d have waiting lists for all of our classes. I hope you will be willing to take up this challenge.
Virtue of the Week:
This week’s SportsLeader Virtue is FLEXIBILITY: The strength to respond to change with ease. The opposite of flexibility is: RIGIDITY: The weakness of being unable to change or adapt to new or different circumstances.

Please be on the lookout soon for a letter from me, Father Tom, and our School Board Chair, Mr. Greg Gallagher, requesting your assistance and sacrifice in helping us achieve our goal of raising $50,000.

Principal’s Update:
The Spanish classes at Lumen Christi recognized Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept 15-Oct 15. You may have seen some of the artwork displayed around the school as well as posters in both English and Spanish. Last Sunday, our Spanish class students attended the Senor de los Milagros (Lord of the Miracles) Mass at Our Lady of Guadalupe Co-Cathedral. We witnessed the beautiful and moving procession at the beginning and end of Mass, the wonderful music from the choir, and the vibrancy of purple in those gathered.
On November 1st, you are cordially invited to attend our first ever Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration in our school from 8-10pm. Come after the All Saints Day Mass at 7pm. We will have free food, music, arts and crafts, face painting, skull cookie decorating, and building an altar. This is the same night as the Parish Fun Night, so we hope you will consider swinging by to see us. Dios los bendiga!
Finally, come support our Lady Archangels at the AT&T Sports Center as they compete in the Spiketacular through Saturday! And pray for our middle school basketball players up in Su-Valley!

Dodgeball, Open House, Chocolate Challenge!
On Friday, November 15th, the school will be hosting an Archdiocesan-wide Dodgeball Tournament. Organized by the Archdiocese but held here in our NCAA regulation sized gym, this promises to be a really fun night not just for our Lumen families, but all those who will be visiting our school as part of games or as your guest at our modified “open house.” So what’s it all about?
PART 1: DODGEBALL
The Dodgeball team rules are simple: 3 boys/3 girls per team. Can only find 4 girls and 2 boys or 2 girls and 4 boys? Not to worry. Want 3 men/3 women? Great – adult teams welcome too. Are you a 6 person family of all ages that wants to play together? Awesome – make it so. Teams will be matched for play the night of the tournament according to male/female ratio & assumed ability (we promise elementary school teams won’t be matched against the Dimond Baseball Team!)
The winning team gets to take home an awesome trophy for the year, there will also be awards for the Best Team Spirit & Best Uniform.
Please register your team(s) if you plan to participate: https://forms.gle/4M7ABe8S8625N6gu5. You don’t need to submit player names, Archdiocese organizers simply need to know who to expect so they can plan appropriately. Players may only participate on one team in order to keep the playing field level. Questions about the Tournament can be directed to Matthew Beck at 907-297-7734.
PART 2. “OPEN HOUSE” (kind of, not really)
Experiencing the Lumen school community first hand has proven to be a major selling point for families considering enrollment. As a result, we’re scrapping our traditional fall Open House with its formal tours and hosting an informal night of community building instead.
Prior to the start of the Dodgeball games we’re inviting all Lumen families and their guests to join us for dinner from 6p-7p at the school. Thanks to several amazing family sponsors* we’ll be bringing in an Olive Garden Pasta Bar for all to enjoy. Please invite a family or two with Lumen aged students who might be interested in learning more about the school. You (or your student) can give them a tour, they’ll meet teachers and staff, get fed and maybe even play dodgeball!
(Become a sponsor of this first annual pre- dodgeball tournament dinner! $250 – only three sponsor slots left. Call/text Lumen parent Shareen Crosby at 907-317-8811. Businesses or families welcome.)
3: And finally……CHOCOLATE CHALLENGE
Starting on Tuesday, November 12th, there will be boxes of brownie mix in the office. Take a box home, add a secret ingredient and return your creation to the Pasta Dinner on the 15th. There will be a “taste off” with a prize awarded to the most-best-tastiest-delicioius brownies. Get creative and see if your baking skills are up to the challenge!
Stay tuned for additional details on what will be a busy November night, but mark your calendars now – you won’t want to miss it.
