Principal’s Update:
I hope everyone enjoyed a restful and spiritual Christmas break! The start of the second semester brought smiling faces and cold spaces–brrrrrr! We are so happy to welcome the Tiernan family to our school this semester. Leyla joined our 9th grade Class of 2023, while Matthew joined our 8th grade Class of 2024. We also want to welcome back Kelsey Fanning and her family. Kelsey joined the other members of our Class of 2024.
January means the continuation of our boys and girls basketball season. While our teams are away in Bethel for a VFW Tournament, we hope you will come out and support the teams at our home games coming up this month! January also means celebrating Catholic education during Catholic Schools Week at the end of the month. More to follow on the activities of this week, but some highlights includes an all-Catholic School Mass on January 27th, our 4th Annual State of the School on January 28th, and Community Masses at St. Benedict Parish on February 1st and 2nd. We hope you will be able to join us for all or some of these celebrations!
LUMENary Drive Update:
The holidays brought in more LUMENary donations and we continue to be so thankful to all who have given. We’re at close to 80% of our $50,000 goal with just over 60% of total Lumen Family participation! Way to go, dedicated Lumen families! Remember that while we challenge every family to give (or raise) $500, any amount is welcome and we’d love to be able to brag that we have 100% family participation. You can give easily via check, cash or credit card in the Front Office, or on line through our website at https://lumenchristiak.org/giving/. Select “click here” in the LUMENary Drive information; enter an amount, then click on “Continue” under “New Giver” (or sign in if you have an established on-line giving account.) It’s that easy!

Archangel Sports #Lumenproud:
The 2019 Lumen Christi Invitational High School Basketball Tournament started TODAY! This pre-season tournament features both girls and boys teams from Wasilla, Birchwood, Grace Christian and Nanwalek. Our girls played a tough first against Wasilla at 1p today and our boys take on Grace Christian at 7p tonight. The Friday line up = girls vs. Grace Christian at 3p and boys vs. Nanwalek at 7p. The tournament will wind up Saturday with both teams going up against Birchwood, 2p for our girls and 4p for our boys. There’s nothing better than holiday basketball so come out and cheer on our athletes!
Speaking of the tournament, we still need a bit of help taking tickets and selling concessions throughout the weekend. Please sign up and support the team here: https://signup.com/go/GoHkPcy
Finally, if you purchased an ARCH card during Back-to-School Registration in August (Arch cards get you into all home basketball games for free), those were distributed and your student should have brought it home…check their backpack if you haven’t seen it!
If you’re looking for more basketball fun after Christmas, the Annual Lumen Alumni Basketball games are on Saturday, December 28th. Anyone who ever attended Lumen is encouraged to come and join in, regardless if they played on the teams or not! Women play at 2p and men at 4p. This event is free to the public. Bring your parents (they would love seeing you play again) and your kids (do they know you ever played?).There will be door prizes and great T shirts for the alumni players. Come enjoy!

Look for Principal Ross’s update tomorrow.
LUMENary Drive Update:
Wow – we’re thrilled with our progress to date and are happy to report that we’re at just over 60% of our total goal! That’s the highest percentage at this point in any of the last 3 year’s Lumenary Campaigns. We can’t thank each and every family who has donated enough, and would encourage those of you haven’t to consider giving a gift before the end of the year (hey, it’s fully tax deductible!) Remember that while we challenge every Lumen family to give $500 (or raise it by reaching out to family and friends) any amount is welcome and we’d love to have 100% family participation. Thank you again.

Way to go to all of our players with special shout out to 7th grader Amara Warren who was named Most Valuable Player for the Tournament! Congratulations Amara – we’re ever so proud of you.
Did anybody notice that Coach Trombley’s quote was missing from last week’s Lumen News? Here’s what was printed: “The High School Basketball season kicked off with a Rosary Rally and Jersey Ceremony on Tuesday night, thanks to all who came out in support of our teams. As Coach Trombley said as he handed out the boy’s jerseys “ .” SORRY COACH!
Here’s the missing quote – and thanks for the words of inspiration for the team: “If a man does his best, what else is there. General George S. Patton” We know both teams, the boys and girls have already been working hard in practice and will always strive to give their best.
Speaking of HS Basketball, the season kicks off with a tournament here at Lumen on Dec. 19th, 20th and 21st. We need help in the Concession Stand, this is a great way to earn share hours and support the school – you’d be surprised how much money we raise through hotdogs, popcorn and slushies! Congratulations as well to all the dozen or so students who earned a casual day for no tardies for the month of October, including the mighty Class of 2021! The entire junior class had NO tardies for the month of October, and so earned an entire week of casual dress just before Thanksgiving! Each month, we renew this challenge for our students, so be on time each day and dress down!
Now that our gym floor is finally complete, our students have enjoyed lunchtime “recess” each day and our co-ed junior high basketball team earned a tight 11-10 victory over Faith Lutheran in the first official game on the new floor. We also hosted our first ever Rosary Rally and Jersey Ceremony for our high school basketball teams. Father Tom blessed the gym floor, we prayed the Rosary, heard words of encouragement and legacy from Mr. Daniel George, Lumen Christi Class of 2005 (and team member of our 2004 State Championship Team), and coaches handed out jerseys while recognizing our boys and girls teams. It was a memorable evening of prayer and tradition!
Thanks to the 20 or so parents who attended the Principal Parent Forum. I really enjoy the opportunity to hear thoughts and ideas and share some updates with everyone.
I encourage you to provide input to us through our Parent Climate Survey. It is less than 5 questions and literally takes about 3 minutes. The survey can be found here: http://bit.ly/ClimateParent. Right now, only 12 parents have provided feedback; we are looking for 40, so please click on the link and give us your perspective. These surveys are used as evidence in our reaccreditation process with Cognia (formerly AdvancEd) scheduled for Spring 2021.
Finally, all Lumen students have been invited by Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish to celebrate their Feast Day Mass at the Dec. 8th 11:30a.m. Mass. Mrs. Alvarez is offering extra credit for Spanish, and I am offering service hours and a casual/dress down day for students who attend in Lumen Mass day attire. Students should be at OLG by 11am!
LUMENary Drive Update:
!!FIFTY TWO!! That’s the magic number of the week….fifty two…percent that is! With 120 donors having generously contributed to date, we’re at $25,907.81…..officially over half-way to our annual goal of $50,000. Of the 120 donors, 25 of them are Lumen families. That represents 21% of the overall donors and 45% of the total Lumen family population. While we challenge every Lumen family to give $500 (or raise it by reaching out to family and friends) any amount is welcome and we’d love to have 100% family participation. So thank you to everyone who has contributed so far, and now’s the time to do it if you haven’t!
Virtue of the Week:
This week’s SportsLeader Virtue is COOPERATION: The strength to work together toward a common objective. The opposite of DIVISION: The weakness of creating disagreements within a group which typically leads to tension, hostility and/or separation.
Campus Ministry:
The Campus Ministry Office is located in the school library, students and parents are always welcome to stop by!

Student Spotlight:
Parents – we’re proud of our Archangels both on campus and off! If your son or daughter deserves a shout out here in Lumen News, please let Mrs. Gore at the Front Desk know.
This week’s special shout out to hockey goalie & Lumen’s own Class of 2022 Jack Schroder who stopped a final penalty shot and saved his team from going into sudden death overtime in last weekend’s U16 B League Turkey Shootout Tournament. Thanks to the save, Jack’s team clinched the championship title. Way to go JACK!

The Boys have one more game against Faith Lutheran on December 3rd before the season ends for both teams with tournament play on December 6th & 7th. We’re thankful that attending a small school means more players have the chance to participate in sports, many of our Jr. High players are on an organized sports team for the first time.
The High School Volleyball Team played so well at their final tournament in Soldotna last weekend, truly exhibiting their best performance of the season. Congratulations to all of our Lady Archangels, we’re proud of you and thankful for your commitment to the team and your fellow players.

We’re grateful in advance of any help you can provide to Mrs. Craig who is looking for a Christmas break rabbit sitter for the class mascot, Jidor. Mrs. Craig will be out of town and unable to take care of him. Jidor’s a very sweet pet and great with kids as all of the students can attest to! He comes with bedding and food for the holidays. If interested, please contact Mrs. Craig directly: acraig@lumenchristiak.org
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend.
