Principal’s Update:
This week we wish Class of 2022 sophomores Vaeda Michaelson and Jack Murkowski GOOD LUCK as they compete in the Alaska State Debate Championships in Juneau. After a 2nd place finish at a recent debate at Service, Jack and Vaeda are posed to put Lumen back on the DDF (Drama, Debate, Forensics) map. Good luck Archangels!
For the past several weeks and as part of our spring enrollment marketing campaign, we have been paying to boost ads and other materials about the school on Facebook. One of these launches is our new marketing video which was shown for the first time at the Gala. This video is a great tool to share with potential families and emphasizes that an education at Lumen Christi goes far beyond the required public school curriculum. If each family could SHARE the below link on their own Facebook page, we can likely make a big impact in attracting new students and families. The more internal/organic SHARES we have, the farther our paid boost will go. So please SHARE!
https://www.facebook.com/lumenchristiak/videos/512149623048731/
And finally, Gala – what a wonderful night it was! I would like to thank everyone who supported the event in so many ways, from procurement, to basket making, to set up, tear down, and everything in between. I would be remiss in not specifically mentioning Danielle Rybicki, Julie Irving, and Michell Goodwin for their above and beyond, extraordinary work as well – without them there wouldn’t be a Gala. While the final numbers are not yet in, the preliminary figures show we did very well towards our goal, especially in tuition scholarship monies. Well done Lumen community!
LUMENary Drive Update:
Speaking of well done Lumen community, we jumped from 93% to 94% this week, slowly and surely we’ll make it to our 100% goal! In addition to our 100% of goal mark, we also hope for 100% family participation but we seem to be holding right at 61%. If you haven’t contributed yet, now’s the time, and remember no gift is too big or too small $20 million or just $20 – it’s all good!
Virtue of the Week:
This week’s SportsLeader Virtue is DIGNITY: The strength to be worthy of respect and honor. The opposite of dignity is DEGRADATION: The weakness to disrespect, bully or dishonor others.
Catholic Schools Campaign Update:
The “I Love My Catholic School” student letter writing campaign is working! Here are a few testimonials we received this week:
“In response to the letter from (student) that we received last week, a donation has been made to Lumen Christi. Study hard!”
“I was so touched by the letter I received from (student). The transformation in (student) over the past three years has been amazing. Thank you for all you do.”
So Thank You parents, for helping your students get those cards out the door. Spreading the news about our amazing school is a top priority and there’s no better way to do that than through 1:1 conversations be they face to face, electronically or hand-written. Keep up the good work.
Campus Ministry:
The Campus Ministry Office is located in the school, students and parents are always welcome to stop by!

Archangel Sports Update:
We’re hosting a Junior High Volleyball Rally TODAY in the gym! Watch here next week for an update on play. We continue to be proud of our 7th & 8th grade Archangel athletes.
It’s been a busy basketball week with games Monday (v. Anaktuvuk Pass) Tuesday v. Birchwood) & Wednesday (v. Noatak). The Girls were so close to a victory Monday and lost by a mere 4 points! It was neck & neck for the Boys in the first half of the game but they pulled out a victory in the end. Tuesday against Birchwood saw similar results with the Girls taking a loss and the Boys, a win. On Wednesday as the teams battled Noatak, the tables were turned and the Girls came out on top but the Boys took a hit and went down against the Lynx.
There are only 2 home games left before the season ends in tournament play: Tuesday the 18th (vs. South High School JV) and Thursday the 27th (vs. Birchwood.)
**Of special note regarding last Monday’s game: Anaktuvuk Pass shares a school district with the village of Kaktovik, who lost their school and community hub in a devastating fire this past weekend. A Go-Fund-Me Page has been set up to aid in it’s reconstruction – please give generously if you can:

Principal’s Update:
What an awesome and busy Catholic Schools Week last week! Thanks to all the staff, students, and parents who made the week a successful and exciting one!
This week, we have turned our attention this week on the 25th Anniversary Gala on Saturday. The gym is decorated, chairs and tables are set up, and the school is transforming into a night “Under the Stars”! We thank all of those working hard to bring it all together, especially Danielle Rybicki, Julie Irving, and Tracy Ross, and we look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday night!
Thanks to all those who attended and watched on Facebook (from as far away as Azerbaijan) at last week’s State of the School. Besides highlighting our academic, athletic, and spiritual excellence, I issued a “Three Ways to Help in the Next 30 Days” challenge. Here you go:
-
Bring a prospective family to Pancake Dinner on Feb 25th and other upcoming Lumen events.
-
Attend and support the Gala on Feb 8.
-
Have your son or daughter write out five note cards to friends and family and help us raise $500 per family following Catholic Schools Week.
I’ll add one additional challenge. As we approach Lent (Ash Wednesday is Feb 26th), perhaps you will consider attending our morning daily Mass at 7:15am as a family? Mass is about 20 minutes long and a great way to start your day! We hope to see you!
LUMENary Drive Update:
We’re holding steady at 93% of our goal with 61% of families having contributed so far. Remember no amount is too small (or too big!) to give and 100% family participation would be awesome.
Virtue of the Week:
This week’s SportsLeader Virtue is CAMARADERIE: The strength to have mutual trust and friendship among people who spend a lot of time together. The opposite of camaraderie is CLIQUISHNESS: The weakness of choosing to connect, associate or communicate with only a select group.
Catholic Schools Campaign Update:
We’re happy to report that “I Support Catholic Education” envelopes are coming through the mail – meaning that students have sent off their “I Love My School” letters to friends and families! Thanks to all of you as parents who undoubtedly made this happen through a certain amount of ‘reminding’ (nagging?!) The extra effort by you and your student makes a difference in the amount of support for our school.
Shout out to the Henry family – the very first donation came in before Catholic Schools Week even ended and included a note “Per request from Michael Henry Jr.!” Thank you Michael!
Campus Ministry:
The Campus Ministry Office is located in the school, students and parents are always welcome to stop by!

Archangel Sports Update:
The Basketball teams had an amazing time on the road last week and came home with both wins and losses behind them. The Girls were bested by CIA, Nikolaevsk and Ninilchik, the Boys were able to take down CIA and Nikolaevsk but lost to Ninilchik.
Back on their home turf against King Cove Tuesday night, the Girls went down but the Boys pulled out a victory – it’s worth noting King Cove were the State Champions last year so this was a nice win for our team. Games next week are Monday (v. Anaktuvuk Pass) and Wednesday (v. Noatak) here at the school (5:30p/Girls; 7:00p/Boys) and Tuesday out in Birchwood, same times – 5:30p/Girls and 7p/Boys.
Switching gears to volleyball, it’s great to see that our Jr. High players are really coming together as a team. In their scrimmage against Grace Christian last Thursday they won 3 out of their 4 matches. They continued to play well the next day at the All School Rally and won the majority of those games as well. The next Rally will be Thursday, February 13th, time TBD. We’re always proud of our newest players as they figure out team play for the first time!
Archangel Shout Outs
Our students are amazing both on campus and off, shout out to the following for particularly impressive work in the past week:
*10th graders Jack Murkowski and Vaeda Michaelson who coached by Ms. Kelli Reed took second place in their most recent Public Forum Debate as they argued “Should the United States replace a Means Tested Welfare System with Universal Income?” This win was particularly impressive as Jack & Vaeda were up against not just the South/East/Service/Eagle River/West High teams that they normally debate but also additional teams from Kodiak and the Kenai Peninsula as well. Jack, Vaeda & Mrs. Reed are headed to the State Tournament in Juneau next week. We’re enormously proud of these two and their amazing Coach, Ms. Reed!
*8th graders Kateri Everard and Ryan Solberg…aka Team Black Swan…who competed through Raven Home School last week in the middle school Battle of the Books competition. They blew their first round competitors out of the water with a score of 104 to 64! They went on to defeat their second round competitors as well and are now headed to State Competition at the end of the month. Way to go Kateri and Ryan – your perseverance and dedication to BOOKS is something to be celebrated for sure!

Principal’s Update:
Can you say “Other Duties As Assigned”? Mr. Ross is currently wearing his bus driver hat and is enroute to Soldotna with the High School Basketball teams. Watch for a Principal’s update next week.
LUMENary Drive Update:
We’re happy to announce…..drum roll please……..we’re at 93% of our LUMENary Drive Goal! Through many generous donors, over $46,000 ($46,364 to be exact) has come into the school in response to our ask for support. We can’t thank all those who have given enough.
To recap on giving: we’re holding steady at 61% of families having contributed at varying levels. Remember there is no amount too small to give. If you can afford $40, perfect. If you can afford $40 million (!) that’s perfect too. While the goal remains to give or help raise $500*, just as important is having 100% family participation. Why is that important? Because it demonstrates to all other donors that our families are committed to the school and value what is offered to each and every student.
*Speaking of helping raising $500, by now you should have received in the mail five “I love my school!” Catholic Schools Week cards for your student to write to family and friends. Last year this effort brought in over $6,000 from nearly 30 new supporters to the school. Please encourage (nag?!) your kids to get those cards out. Parental help in getting that done is hugely appreciated.
Virtue of the Week:
This week’s SportsLeader Virtue is EXCELLENCE: The strength to achieve objectives with perfection and skill. The opposite of adaptable is MEDIOCRITY: The weakness of giving or accepting less than our best.
Campus Ministry:
The Campus Ministry Office is located in the school library, students and parents are always welcome to stop by!

Archangel Sports Update #Lumenproud:
The Girls took on Kodiak last Friday night and won handily. On Monday, both teams took on Sand Point with the Girls fighting hard but being overtaken. The Boys were more successful with another win on our home court.
Both teams hit the road today and have lots of driving as they take on Cook Inlet Academy (Thursday), Nikolaevsk (Friday), and Ninilchik (Saturday) on their home turf. Safe travels and stay tuned next week for updates on those games.
We hosted our first Junior High Volleyball Rally last weekend with Birchwood, Anchor Lutheran, Faith Lutheran & Holy Rosary Academy. Designed to give teams maximum play time, the Rally was a success with many games and all teams being able get their early season kinks worked out!
There’s a scrimmage tonight at 6p against Grace Christian and another full Rally with all teams tomorrow/Friday from 3:30p – 8p, Lumen players should be here at 3p to warm up. Support the team and knock out some Share Hours by signing up to sell concessions tomorrow! Sign up here: https://signup.com/go/GoHkPcy

Archangel Sports Update #Lumenproud:
It’s been a busy week so far with our teams playing Tanalian (Monday) and Nenana (Wednesday), with more games lined up this evening (Thursday) against Ninilchik. The Tanalian teams on Monday were formidable. Our Girls succumbed to their playing and while our Boys were ultimately victorious, there were times when the score was tied with Tanalian even up by a basket or two. On Wednesday our Girls were taken down by Nenana but our Boys had a decisive win.
The Girls will play Kodiak tomorrow right after school gets out at 12:15p (no Boys game) and on Monday the 27th both teams play again against Sand Point (5:30 Girls/7:00p Boys.) After that both teams will be on the road Jan. 30 – Feb 1 to face off against Cook Inlet Academy, Nikolaevsk and Ninilchik. Great playing and safe travels next week!
For a change in pace from basketball, come out and watch our Jr. High Volleyball team kick of their playing season tomorrow at 5p in the Lumen Gym! We’re excited for this newest group of Archangels as they take the court for the first time this year.
And finally – There are a few extra t-shirts from the Alumni Basketball Game (held over the Christmas break. Shirts are for sale in the Office – $15 each.

LUMENary Drive Update:
Takin’ it to the next level! Stay tuned for information next week on how we’re going to put a personal touch on this and work towards exceeding our goal. Intrigued? You should be!
Virtue of the Week:
This week’s SportsLeader Virtue is APPRECIATION: The strength to recognize and enjoy someone’s good qualities and actions. The opposite of appreciation is THOUGHTLESSNESS: The weakness of being so wrapped up in ourselves that we don’t think of others.
Campus Ministry:
The Campus Ministry Office is located in the school library, students and parents are always welcome to stop by!
“My daddy, Rev. A.D. King, my granddaddy, Martin Luther King, Senior – we are a family of faith, hope, and love,” Dr. Alveda King, niece of Martin Luther King Jr.
-
Please keep Evan Powell and his family in your thoughts and prayers as his grandfather passed.
-
We are now signing up volunteers for our Passion Encounter, Mardi Gras Dinner and Stations of the Cross.
-
Please send Mrs. Loeffler news and activities happening in your parishes!
-
We wish the fervor and love of the Holy Spirit upon you all this week!

Archangel Sports Update #Lumenproud:
Shout out to our High School Basketball teams who competed at the VFW Tournament in Bethel last weekend. The Girls were down one starter and so lost 2 games, won one and placed 7th in the tournament overall. The Boys were undefeated across the board and flew home with the championship title. Congrats to all of the players and thank you for representing our school well while on the road.
Closer to home, both teams played Monday against Wainright and Wednesday against Cook Inlet Academy. The Girls fought hard but victory was elusive against both visiting teams. Cook Inlet came with a JV Boys Team which allowed our 9th & 10th graders to play as a JV team as well. While not successful, it did give our newest players solid time on the court to start running plays and honing skills. And finally, our Varsity Boys were once again successful in both Monday & Wednesday games – great playing all the way around. Way to go to ALL of our Archangels!
Next week will be busy with games nearly every night:
- Lumen vs. Tanalian – Monday, 5:30p/Girls; 7:00p/Boys
- Lumen vs. Nenana – Wednesday, 5:30p/Girls; 7:00p/Boys
- Lumen vs. Ninilchik – Thursday, 5:30/Girls; 7:00p/Boys
- Lumen vs. Kodiak – Friday – Girls only – 5:30pm
We’re always looking for gate & concession stand help and know the time spent there counts towards your required annual Share Hours. You can sign up to help here: https://signup.com/client/invitation2/secure/3120224/false#/invitation
Remember that It’s not too late to enroll your 7th or 8th grade student in Jr. High Volleyball. Practice are M, T and Th evenings from 6:30 – 7:45p in the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton gym. This is a co-ed team, all players and abilities welcome! Contact Coach Warren at athletics@lumenchristiak.org if interested.
School Announcements:
Spring Intensives
DELAYED! Our culinary arts intensive scheduled to start Feb 4th has been delayed a month due to renovation work in the Parish Hall. We’ll be re-kicking things off March 3rd, details to follow.
Parent Teacher Conferences
It’s hard to believe that after just 2 weeks of school we’re already thinking about end of quarter conferences, but they seem to sneak up on everyone before we know it. So for planning purposes:
Thursday, February 13th is a half day for students with dismissal at 12:20p. Conferences are on a walk in basis from 3p – 7p. Note that the Parent/Principal Forum is this same night beginning at 7p with wine and snacks available starting at 6:30p.
Friday, February 14th is also a half day with dismissal at 12:20p and conferences will run from 1p – 4p. Conferences are a great way to touch base with all of your student’s teachers as well as with Mr. Ross.
Free After School Tutoring
Don’t forget that free tutoring is available every Thursday afternoon from 2:30-3:30 in Mrs. Craig’s room. If your student needs extra help in any subject, or just quiet time to focus on homework – this is a great opportunity to do both.
