Lumen News – October 15, 2020
Important Upcoming Dates:
- Oct 16: TOMORROW – Friday B Schedule with 8am livestream Mass/End of First Quarter
- Oct 21-22: Parent Teacher Conferences, 1-3pm and 4-7pm
- Oct 23: INSERVICE (No School)
Principal’s Update:
I appreciate everyone’s diligence in logging into their classes from home this week. This was not an optimum solution, but from what teachers tell me, and in my own observations, our students transitioned to distance learning with only a few hiccups. Well done Archangels!
Now the really good news! With a positive test rate today of 4.7%, we have been cleared by the Archdiocese of Anchorage Juneau to have our students back in school in person next week. Attached below is the official notification. That said, I look forward to seeing our students on Monday morning for their regular temperature checks (I think I know almost every student’s “normal” temperature by heart at this point). Our status will be ORANGE, with in person classes Monday-Thursday. Friday, Oct 23rd, is a previously scheduled NO SCHOOL INSERVICE day, which means no all-school Mass or classes on that day. So enjoy a longer weekend!
I will sit down with the other school Principals and Pastors and re-examine our current safe return plans to determine if we need to modify them going forward. I will be sure to include you in any discussions of options we might be considering to change/modify what we have in place.
We will put out more information next week about how Parent-Teacher Conferences will work, and Coach Warren will send separate correspondence on athletic activities.
Have a blessed and wonderful weekend!

LUMEN-ary Drive
Hitting mailboxes tomorrow – info about our LUMEN-ary Drive! Yes, it’s back, bigger and better than ever! We’ve got lofty goals but know that together with our fans, friends, families and supporters, we’ll get there! HUGE shout out to those of you who have already contributed – you’re exempt from any further direct solicitation. (Yep, the earlier you contribute, the fewer times Fr. Tom will come a’knockin : )
Mardi Gras Gala & Auction
Our Winter Gala & fundraiser is shaping up to be a virtual event (they’re all the rage in this time of Covid) which has both its positives and negatives. Of course on the negative side, we don’t get to come together and have a fun, fancy night out in support of our school. On the positive side, attendees are no longer limited to people in Anchorage – anyone can attend on line. In order for the event to be engaging and successful tho, we want to have a LARGE online presence, so please help us spread the word. How can you help?!
-
Included below is a graphic you can cut & paste into your social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, etc) or even just cut & paste it into an email and send to all of your contacts!
-
Volunteers are needed: procurement callers (double share hours for calling!), item pick-up, class project coordinators, and data entry help.
-
Sign up to bring wine for our Mystery Wine and get share hours!
-
Donate a dessert certificate for our dessert auction and get share hours!
-
More volunteer opportunities will be posted as we navigate this new process.

Principal’s Update:
Hello Lumen Families! A couple of updates for you this week. First, I want to congratulate those students who achieved a 3.0 or above and made the Academic Honor Roll last spring. The list of students is below and certificates will be sent home this week. I would love to do our traditional honors awards assembly and recognize each and every student in front of their peers, but we are simply unable to do so given the circumstances. Please join me in congratulating these students! Well done!
Second, if you have been paying attention to the COVID ACT NOW website, you will see that Anchorage’s Positive Test Rate has creeped up to 2.9%. We will still be in YELLOW status next week, but there may be a possibility that we have to transition to ORANGE if the Test Rate goes over 3%. As a reminder, in ORANGE, our students are in school in person Monday through Thursday, with Friday being an at home day. To facilitate more academic time and to accommodate our new 8am Friday Mass schedule, we made a change to our Friday routine in ORANGE from what was originally published in August. Our new ORANGE Friday A/B schedule will be as follows:
8:00a-8:55a Livestream St. Ben’s Mass via Facebook from home
9:00a-10:00a Period 1/2 (Students log into Google Meet from home)
10:05a-11:05a Period 3/4 (Students log into Google Meet from home)
11:10a-12:10p Period 5/6 (Students log into Google Meet from home)
Our teachers will discuss this with students tomorrow and next week so that if we do have to transition up to ORANGE, your son or daughter will know where to be and when.
Finally, as mentioned in last week’s Principal-Parent Forum, please mark your calendars for our upcoming Parent Teacher Conferences. We look forward to seeing you there! Have a wonderful weekend!

Jr. High Co-ed Volleyball Skill Building starts on Monday October 12th. Practices will be Monday & Wednesday from 1:15-2:30p. Students are welcome to stay after school and eat lunch, outside-weather permitting or inside in the gym, socially distanced! This is a great way for kids to learn the game, build some skills and get some exercise, all while having fun. Please encourage them (or force them, like I do to my kids) to play. Talk to Coach Warren if you’ve got questions. athletics@lumenchristiak.org
Our dual athletes (Archangels who also play for a home zoned public school) continue to impress!
Shout out to 10th grader Mia Sperbeck – Dimond High Swimming – who last weekend at a tournament came in second in her individual event (50 free) and was selected to be in two A-Relays where she helped her team finish first in both! Way to go Mia!!
Catch 11th Brenden Gregory (starting QB for Dimond Lynx football team) play tomorrow/Friday at 7p. No, you can’t watch in person but you can watch him & his team take on the Service High Cougars here: www.nfhsnetwork.com. Way to represent on the field, Brendan.
Last but not least, good luck to 10th grader Leyla Tiernan, defenseman for the North Stars U16 Tier 2 Team – she and her teammates are helping kick off this years Termination Dust Tournament. Go Leyla!

Mardi Gras Gala & Auction
Thanks to everyone who called into the Gala Meeting last night – lots of great ideas were generated as we think about how to host a successful fundraising event for the school. If you attended the meeting, please email me (Anne) at lchs@lumenchristiak.org so that I can record a Share Hour for you. Yes, you get credit for attending meetings!
If you attended any Principal/Parent Forum meetings, send me those hours too. You get one hour for every meeting attended.
Spring 2020 Honor Roll
Each semester invite parents to come to an all school assembly when we recognize academic achievement and distribute Honor Roll certificates. Yep – you guessed it, cancelled this semester as we limit gathering sizes. A full listing of students who made Honor Roll last spring is shown below – student certificates were distributed this afternoon in Advisory and should be coming home in a manila envelope!

Call for Pics
Hello Lumen Families – My name is Sabrina and I am on the Yearbook team. We are trying to put together a page titled “Fun things during quarantine’ and I am reaching out to request any quarantine photos you have of your student(s). This could mean e-learning as well as getting out and having fun outdoors. We are soliciting your help with photos since so many other activities were, or have been cancelled. Please send them to Yearbook@lumenchristiak.org Thank you so much for your help. The Lumen Christi Yearbook Team
Gala & Auction Fundraiser & Planning Meeting
Every year for the past 25 years the Lumen Christi community has hosted a Gala & Auction as one of our school’s major fundraisers and it’s an integral part of our school’s operating budget. Last year we had nearly 300 guests and raised around $100,000 to support our school & scholarship fund. Our Gala Committee has begun planning for our 26th Gala & Auction and we are looking to all of our school families for ideas and support. Please join us VIRTUALLY next Wednesday, SEPTEMBER 30th @ 7:00 pm. Join by video conference – Web link: https://meet.google.com/sxv-fnkz-scd or by phone: (US) +1 669-223-8711 PIN: 301 998 805#
School Attendance
For those of you who check attendance on PowerSchool, you might notice that there’s a new attendance category – “PV” which is “Present Virtually.” If you call your student in sick or absent in the morning, they will be marked “A” for Absent. If then during the course of the day they call in to attend class, teachers will update attendance to “PV.” This will not only simplify the procedure but also more accurately track attendance on our end.
Bus, Bus, Don’t Block the Bus
We know the parking lot can be a bit chaotic when school gets out, but if you could please give a wide berth to the Archangel Busses at the east end of the parking lot, that would be great. We like to get those loaded and on their way first, having them able to easily navigate the parking lot would be helpful. Thank you!
St. Theresa’s Raisin’ o’ the Green
The annual fundraiser for St. Theresa’s Camp is going virtual this year! Saturday, October 3rd – you can attend from home in your jammies and bid on items while dining on a delicious meal catered by The Bridge – all while raising money for a great cause. See the postcard below for more information, email Yvette Tousignant at yctous@gmail.com with questions, or go to stak2020.ggo.bid to start bidding as early as September 30th.

Principal’s Update:
Our days and weeks seem to be flying by! It is hard to believe that our high school retreat is upon us and we are turning our calendar towards October already.
I want to thank our Campus Minister, Mrs. Loeffler, for organizing and coordinating what promises to be an amazing high school retreat next Friday, September 25th from 8am-2pm at the Holy Spirit Retreat Center. Our Class of 2021 seniors have been working hard to be group leaders for our freshmen, sophomores and juniors. We will start the retreat with an all high school Mass at 8am in the Resurrection Chapel, followed by the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Our students will hear different presentations during the morning from Mrs. Theresa Austin, Mr. Bob McMorrow, and Mr. Mike Sylvester. All groups will have an opportunity for Adoration in the Chapel as well. Following the repose of the Blessed Sacrament and closing comments from Mr. Rudy Poglitsch, our students will gather around grade level “bonfires” (fire pits) to eat a pizza lunch and reflect on the day. Given the challenges we face with COVID, we feel this is the best way to combine two time-honored, September traditions at Lumen: our high school retreat and the Homecoming bonfire. As you can imagine, we are simply unable to offer a third Lumen tradition–the Homecoming dance–this year, but will do our best to continue planning for one later in the year.
Our retreat will incorporate all of the health and safety protocols we have in place daily at Lumen, including the mask requirement, social distancing, and frequent sanitization. Further, students will remain with their grade throughout the day, with the exception of the all high school Mass at 8am and the closing ceremony. During these two times, students will be individually separated by at least one chair space and grades will be physically separated by seating section. We are looking forward to this opportunity to gather our high school students together in our faith.
So what do the junior high students do on Friday, Mr. Ross? Good question! Instead of sitting in academic classes, our 7th and 8th grade students will attend Mass here in the school (in Advisory classrooms) and do a mixture of fun, spirit, and service activities until dismissal at 12:30pm.
A special shout out to Class of 2022 Junior Brenden Gregory who is the starting quarterback for the varsity Dimond football team. Because of our unique co-op sports agreement with ASD signed last spring, our high school students can play public school sports if we do not offer them. Since we have yet to build an astroturf stadium behind our gym, Brenden is representing Lumen football as a Dimond Lynx this year. Attendance at his games is very limited, but I hope you will keep him in your thoughts and prayers. In future Updates, I plan to highlight our other student athletes who attend Lumen during the day and play for ASD in the afternoon, so stay tuned!
Finally, I hope everyone will join me for my next Principal-Parent Forum on Wednesday, Sept 23 from 7-8pm, where I plan to share some thoughts about our fall sports program, Parent-Teacher Conferences, and our October and November schedules. Please have a blessed and safe weekend!

Principal’s Update:
One of the biggest highlights of my day is greeting each student every morning at the door (while taking their temperature, of course)! While I get the typical teenage response of “I’m tired, Mr. Ross” from a few of them after being asked “How are you doing today?,” I’m proud that our students are in good spirits and seem excited to be in school in person with their friends and our teachers. After finishing up nearly a month of school, we are all blessed to have this opportunity to learn and educate inside our school building.
Last week was a whirlwind of activities in our first full week of school, but stands as a testament of the goodness happening each and every day here at Lumen. On Thursday, the seven members of our Senior class went on retreat at the Holy Spirit Center on the Hillside and spent the day reflecting on Spiritual Warfare, what it means to be a Servant Leader, and how personalities and temperaments can affect group dynamics. We ended the day walking the Stations of the Cross and reflecting on Christ’s sacrifice for all of us.
Friday started with Mr. Scott Gross from Alaska’s News Source coming in to do a news story about our back to school successes. You can see his story here: (https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/careersandeducation/lumen-christi-students-complete-first-full-week-of-in-school-classes/ar-BB18IQXp). Later, we celebrated our Back to School “Mass of the Holy Spirit” at 9am. We had representatives from each high school class physically attend Mass, while our Class of 2021 Seniors led the school with readings and liturgical support. Due to capacity limitations in the church, the remainder of our school watched the live streamed Mass from their Advisory classrooms. Following the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, our student body processed behind the Paschal Candle to our school entryway, where we transferred the Light of Christ into our hallway. Students were given an opportunity to receive Communion, and Father Tom went around the school and blessed each classroom. This is a unique, annual tradition that I am so grateful we were able to do despite the challenges of COVID.
I hope you have a great and safe weekend!

Google Classrooms
If your student ever forgets how to get into their virtual/Google classroom – or you want to take a stroll and look at upcoming assignments and homework – I’ve attached a cheat sheet to help you both out. This has also been posted onto the school’s website at https://lumenchristiak.org/.
Dimond High School/Lumen Opportunity
As many of you know, we have an agreement with the Alaska Schools Activity Association which allows Lumen students to participate in sports that we don’t offer e.g., football, swimming, hockey, at their home-zoned public school.
We currently have a Lumen student playing football for Dimond, and the Dimond team is recruiting for a team manager. Their primary duty at this point will be to film all the practices and games. If you think your student might be interested, email me at lchs@lumenchristiak.org for Dimond contact information.
Picture Day Wrap Up
If your kiddo forgot to turn in their picture day order form, know that you can now order on-line, simply click here: https://www.photoreflect.com/store/Photos.aspx?e=10589922 Search for your student by first and last name.
Fun factoids – you can request a cropped head shot if you want one of those. Just order the size you want as is, but write in the notes section: “Head Shot” and you’ll get a close up pic.
Class pictures are also available – pull up the grade you’re interested in by entering the grade number as both the first and last name.
Wacky Stuff Needed
Mrs. Brewer’s wild animal fur samples for her Forensic Science Class are nearly depleted. If you have any mounts that you could comb a few hairs from to share, that would be fabulous. Send anything you’ve got in a ziploc bag labeled by type of animal. Approximate location and date of kill would be a huge bonus. Send them to school with your student or drop them at the Front Desk.
Debate Team
“Don’t raise your voice, improve your argument.” -Bishop Desmond Tutu
Debate starts next week and will be meeting every Tuesday & Thursday from 1p-2p. Last year we had a team who made it to the State Tournament in Juneau – have your student join in this year and learn to critically think on their feet and argue with logic! Email the Debate Coach Mrs. Kelli Reed at kreed@lumenchristiak.org for more information.
Extra Masks
Make sure your student has an extra mask or two to throw into their Advisory Tote – I do have extras at the Front Desk but my supply is diminishing rapidly!
Enjoy the sun – have a good Friday and great weekend!
