Principal’s Update:
As we complete a week of distance learning, we turn this Sunday towards the celebration of the Feast of Christ the King. This solemnity helps us recognize that Christ, as the ruler of all peoples and nations, also reigns over our school community and guides our actions. Our students, staff, parents, families, and parishioners are reminded of this fact each day and weekend by the quote over the entrance of our library: “Let it be known to all who enter here that Jesus Christ is the reason for this school, the unseen but ever present teacher in its classes, the model of its faculty and the inspiration for its students.” Our mission statement, proudly displayed on our social media and in every classroom, echoes the centrality of Christ in our lives: “As a ministry of St. Benedict Parish, Lumen Christi High School provides a rigorous Catholic education in a Christ-like environment.” And finally, the importance of Jesus Christ is reinforced in all six of our Attributes of a Lumen Graduate, the very first one stating loudly: “Our graduates have a worldview centered in the teachings of Jesus Christ.”
Despite the challenges this year, our staff and students continue to learn, grow and develop in our faith. We work hard to foster an environment where all in our school can build upon their relationship with our Savior and King. As we enter the Thanksgiving holiday next week, let us give thanks for all that we have, and all that we are able to do to serve the Lord in our lives. And let us all give thanks especially for being united as one body in Christ.
On behalf of our entire school community, I wish you a happy Feast Day and a happy and safe Thanksgiving. Please stay healthy out there.
After I hear from the Archdiocese today and speak with our staff leadership team, I will send a separate email on Friday announcing our operating status for next week. Thanks for your patience.

Archangel Sports:
High School Volleyball – Cheers to our Lady Archangels who finally got some actual game time this past weekend. Their games were split 1-1 with one defeat and one win against Cook Inlet Academy.
Our Regional “Tournament” (with one other team) originally scheduled for Friday has unfortunately been cancelled due to COVID exposure on the other team. We’re hoping to reschedule this match-up later. Stay tuned.
High School Boys Basketball don’t forget to let Coach Warren know if you’ve got a son who wants to come and shoot around with the team. Email him at athletics@lumenchristiak.org and he’ll get you connected up with Coaches Trombley & Gregory.
LUMENary Drive Update:
The number 7seven7 has always been considered “lucky” in many cultures and societies. This week, our LUMENary Drive is full of 7’s! Total giving to date is $31,857. Thirty-seven percent of families have given an average $387. Extended family (of our 37% of our contributing families) have given an additional $287 each.
While our goal remains 100% family participation, we’ll gladly take 107%, counting in family and friends. We’ll also take any amount as long as it has a seven in it, preferably starting with a $7 followed by seven zeros : ) Kidding!
We recognize it’s a sacrifice to pay tuition and then to contribute extra on top of it but truly every little bit helps. You can pop a check in the mail or give easily on line: https://www.osvonlinegiving.com/199/DirectDonate/2946 Thank you for participating at a level that is right for your family.
Front Office News:

Time, treasure, talent ~ thanks to a combination of these three gifts, one of our Lumen families, the Ortegas, will making homemade tamales and delivering them to the school next Tuesday, November 25th. $20 will get you a dozen chicken with green salsa; pork with red salsa; cheese & jalapeno or a combination of all three! Place your order by emailing the Front Office by Sunday for delivery to the school on Tuesday, you can pick them up anytime in between 1p & 3p or we’ll send them home with your student if we’re in session. All proceeds to benefit the school. ¡Muchas gracias Ortega family and friends!
Visa ~ Best Buy ~ Amazon ~ Walmart ~ Starbucks ~ American Eagle….. & MORE – It’s Lumen’s Scrip Program ~ New & Improved
One of Lumen’s fundraising opportunities is through the Scrip program, which allows you to purchase gift cards online at face value resulting in an instant rebate to the school.
Scrip recently made some major improvements to the program, including a handy app that lets you purchase and track gift cards from your phone. They are also sending the cards right to your door – no more order deadlines or school pick-ups!
This is a super easy way to support the school – just download the “RaiseRight Fundraising” App ~ looks like this:
Then buy a gift card for $20 (or whatever amount you want) from literally hundreds of retailers and the school instantly gets a percentage of each purchase.
Please consider buying gift cards to use as gifts, or pay for your everyday purchases using gift cards instead of cash or credit cards. Thankscriping Day is November 19 and 20 (today and tomorrow!) – any purchases through the RaiseRight app will earn up to 20% bonuses for the school.
See the attached flyer for more information, and note that the ship to home option is only available through the app. If you’re setting up an account for the first time, Lumen’s enrollment code is 24BE76C444853. Questions on the Scrip program can be directed to Lumen parent Celine Kaplan at kap.celine@gmail.com. Thank you for supporting Lumen Christi’s fundraising efforts by purchasing gift cards through Scrip!

Principal’s Update:
We know many if not most of you are wondering what our schedule will look like next week, given the ever rising rates and now Governor’s message that went out earlier today. A final decision has not yet been made but will be by tomorrow late afternoon. We appreciate your patience until then, and in the meantime, don’t forget that this is “Discover Catholic Schools Week!”
Designed to help Catholic schools connect with prospective families, donors, educators and other community members, “Discover Catholic Schools Week” is when here at Lumen, we would normally be hosting our first Open House of the year. While we certainly don’t want to be hosting large gatherings in the school, we did use this time to get some new informational and ‘recruitment’ video up on our webpage and out on our Facebook Page. If you haven’t seen them yet, I encourage you to check them out. Many thanks to the Kaplan, Vargas-Botello and Gross families who took part in our filmmaking!

Student Spotlight:
Last weekend, Kateri Everard (9th grade) participated in a virtual chorus performance with Alaska Sound Celebration. They performed the song “Never Gonna Let You Down,” and Kateri was the only high school aged participant with the adult chorus. Kateri shone and hopes to do another similar performance again soon! Can we say…voice like an (Arch)Angel?
Archangel Sports:
High School Boys Basketball will be hosting some open gym nights to run plays and get in shape for the 2021 season. If you’ve got a high school boy interested in playing, contact Coach Warren @ athletics@lumenchristiak.org and he’ll get you connected up with Coaches Trombley & Gregory.
Junior High Volleyball/Basketball – We were hoping to start having volleyball and/or basketball skills clinics a few days a week after school, but those are still on hold and likely will be until after Christmas break. Stupid Covid.
High School Girls Basketball will kick off sometime after volleyball ends, which because of Covid and numerous cancelled games, has essentially become a one week season. Stupid Covid.
News from around Campus:
LUMEN-ary Drive
Wellllll now. Who read Fr. Tom’s LUMEN-ary Driveletter mailed out in October and then compared it to what I had listed here here last week? And who (besides Father Tom, who nearly had a heart attack) noticed that I was FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS off in my update?! Sorry Fr. Tom! So for the record → because it’s our 25th Anniversary, the LUMEN-ary goal is $100,000, not $50,000.
We are so thankful for the donations that have come in so far. To date, 28 Lumen families have contributed a total of $10,840. Add in family-of-Lumen families (aunts, uncles, grandparents) and that brings numbers up to 40 donations for a total of $14,280. Add in the St. Benedict’s parishioners and school friends and we’re up to 104 donations for a grand total of $31,575. Officially ⅓ of the way there. Don’t forget you can easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy donate by clicking here: https://www.osvonlinegiving.com/199/DirectDonate/2946 Select an amount that feels right for you, click “Continue” and you’re on your way. Thanks y’all!

Shout out to 11th grader Brenden Gregory who was the QB for Dimond High’s Varsity Football team this season; Brenden just received the “Honorable Mention Award for Football” from the Anchorage School District. We love our agreement that allows our Archangels not just to play, but shine on non-Lumen teams within the public school system. Way to represent on the field, B!
The Girls High School Volleyball team has their first game against Birchwood on Monday, November 9th at 5p. Good luck to our Lady Archangels, it’s been a wacky road to get to this point for sure. We’ll be rootin’ for you.
Co-ed Jr. High Volleyball practice continues to be on hold. STILL. Stupid Covid.
Front Office News:
LUMEN-ary Drive
Donations continue to come in – THANK YOU! To date, 24 Lumen families have contributed a total of $9,370.00. Add in family-of-Lumen families (aunts, uncles, grandparents) and that brings numbers up to 33 donations for a total of $11,910.00. Add in the St. Benedict’s parishioners and school friends and we’re up to 80 donations for a grand total of $24,255.00. This is awesome! The total goal is $50,000 so we’re nearly half-way there.
As parishioners and friends continue to give, and if all Lumen families contributed (our goal is 100% family participation – right now we’re at 30%) we would absolutely reach our goal by Thanksgiving. You can drop off a cash or check donation, or to make it super easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy, just click here: https://www.osvonlinegiving.com/199/DirectDonate/2946 Select an amount that feels right for you, click “Continue” and you’re on your way. Cheers!
Debate 2020-21
The presidential debates may be a thing of the past but Lumen’s Debate Team goes on. On Friday, October 23rd, the team began their 2020-2021 debate season with a twist: the students presented their arguments not face to face, but to a screen. Instead of a buzzing cafeteria full of excited students from area schools, competitors Liam Dupras, Vaeda Michaelson, Jack Murkowski, and Emily Ross met in their virtual team room to prepare their speeches and decompress between rounds during West High’s virtual tournament.
Vaeda and Jack returned to Public Forum debate after representing Lumen Christi at the state debate tournament last season. They made cases for and against the enactment of a Medicare for All Act in the United States. Emily returned as an experienced Lincoln-Douglas debater, making cases for and against compulsory voting in democracies. Liam Dupras also tackled this topic, joining the team to compete in his first Lincoln-Douglas debate.
While the new online format presented challenges, the team found debating online to be every bit as engaging and spirited as in-person debates. “Two pages! I took two pages following that last round!” Emily shouted as she showed her full notebook to the screen. The team will return to the virtual debate stage again for the Chugiak Tournament this weekend, November 6th and 7th.
Water Bottles
Please send your students with their own refillable water bottles. I had a small stash of water in the Office which has been depleted by students (no, this is not a request to have that stash replenished!) We’d much rather have them bring their own bottles to fill and refill at our new fancy pants refilling station in the hallway instead of tossing more plastic bottles in the trash. Don’t forget there are Archangel stickers for sale in the Office (2 for $5) that they can use to decorate their bottles.
Vaping Info
Jr. High parents saw their students come home with information about the dangers of e-cigarettes and vaping earlier this week. High school parents, your students will get the same info when they come back to school. Teen vaping in Alaska is on the rise with 1 in 4 students reporting consistent use. Statistically this means that 22 Lumen students are vaping regularly. Eeeewhhhh. Educate yourself and your student on the dangerous effects of nicotine on the teen brain (addiction, permanent lowering of impulse control and mood disorders, to name a few.) This information was provided to the school free of charge by the State of Alaska Tobacco Prevention & Control program and the Volunteers of America.

Hearty congrats to 9th grader Mia Sperbeck who continues to impress while swimming for Dimond High. In last week’s meet against Service she placed first in the 100 freestyle event (also making a State qualifying time) and also helped her Relay Team cruise to first place in both of their relay events. Way to go Mia!
The Girls High School Volleyball team continues to practice (fully masked) in the evenings with the hopes that someday soon they can play a real game against real opponents.
Co-ed Jr. High Volleyball practice continues to be on hold. Stupid Covid.
Campus News:
LUMEN-ary Drive
By now you’ve received Fr. Tom’s letter requesting your participation in our annual LUMEN-ary Drive. Donations are starting to come in and we couldn’t be more thankful. To date, 22 Lumen families (almost 30% of families) have contributed a total of $8,770. WOOT! Add in St. Benedict’s parishioners and friends of Lumen Christi and we’re up to 68 donations totalling $21,130! Awesome! Remember our goal is 100% family participation so check that box off of your “to-do” list and send in your donation today!
Elections – 2020
Mr. Ross’s Government Class will be conducting a voter registration drive Monday during Advisory, and students who are registered will be able to vote on Tuesday, November 3rd. Have a civics lesson with your kids over the weekend, talk with them about candidates (Presidential and Statewide only, no local candidates) and Ballot Measures 1 & 2. Results from our election will be announced Wednesday morning, we’ll see how closely our student vote resembles that national and state ones!
Note that students will need either their Lumen ID or another valid form of identification to be able to register! If your student had their picture taken in August on picture day, they were issued a Lumen I.D. If they’ve already lost that (like my kids have) and they wish to register and vote, please send them with some other form of I.D. Of course we know who they are and could verify identity without it, but the Government Class would like to make this as official as possible.

Our gala team has been hard at work planning an event appropriate for the times we are in. They recently sent out solicitation letters to over 200 of our past community donors. We know that times may be tough for many of them and the team did their best to send out a compassionate letter. Because there may be fewer community donations however, we need our families more than ever this year! Please consider the following ways you may be able to help:
-
Can you offer a cabin, fishing trip, vacation rental or any type of adventure or experience?
-
Can you donate wine or a dessert? Donating these items can earn you Share Hours! Details here: https://signup.com/go/HbuYQJt
-
Do you own or know of a business that is doing well that might be interested in donating an item, gift certificate, or becoming an Archangel Community Sponsor?
-
Sponsors contributing $250 or more will receive recognition on our school website, in bidding software during our event, and during our “live” virtual event.
-
Sponsors contributing $500 or more will also receive community recognition on the school’s Facebook page to include your ad and a link to your page or website.
Once we see what comes in from the community, the team will put out a more specific ask for items to fill in any gaps we might have this year.
When it comes time – we will need everyone to join us virtually and encourage all your family and friends to attend too! In the meantime, please share any ideas or suggestions you might have with the gala team and let them know if you can help in any way: gala@lumenchristiak.org or 273-1530. Prayers and well wishes for a successful event!
Share Hour Opportunities:
For the past several years, Lumen students have participated in several different “Mail for the Military” programs which send holiday cards out to our service members around the globe. Because of COVID (stupid COVID), many groups who normally participate are NOT able to this year. This means that for groups who CAN, there is a greater need than ever. Please help us fill this need and ensure that the brave men and women who are serving our country are remembered and honored over the holidays!
For every 10 cards that your family completes, you’ll earn one Share Hour. We have standard Christmas cards in the Office that you can take home, fill in and bring back OR there is a simple template below that you can print off, decorate & return to the Office. For more information see the guidelines below. Deadline for completing cards is Friday, November 13, 2020.
Saint Francis House Food Pantry needs 1-2 volunteers to pack food boxes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This is a great volunteer opportunity to do with family or someone in your social ‘bubble.’ SFH follows CDC safety guidelines including wearing masks, social distancing and limiting the amount of people in the warehouse. Contact Katie Gordon at 222-7340 or kgordon@cssalaska.org if you can help.
Yearbook Pics:
There’s still time to submit pictures for yearbook and on’t miss this chance to highlight (or embarrass) your kids by sending those in. Use this link: https://images.jostens.com/415464091 or email them to yearbook@lumenchristiak.org
