BLOWOUT! It’s hard to describe Tuesday’s game in any other terms against the Birchwood Warriors. Our Jr. High team and High School team walked away with an 8-0 victory. It was a good time for the teams (especially the High School) to work on skills and get prepped for their tournament in Healy. Watch for tourney results here, next week.

There is a dress code – have your student stop by the Front Office for a handout if there are questions.
THURSDAY HOT LUNCH
Thursday hot lunch starts next week! Thanks again to 9th grade parent Michelle Hohmann for taking the lead on this. Because we had so many students interested in this new yummy option and need to be mindful of distancing during lunch, at least for the near term will be “rotating” Thursday lunches by Jr. High & High School. Our inaugural lunch kick off will go to Jr. High…the following week, High Schoolers. As a reminder, hot lunches are $5/meal and will be charged to your SmartTuition account, per signed agreement at Back to School Registration. Questions? Let Kimberly at the Front Desk know.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
NHS will be sponsoring a canned food drive for the St. Francis Food pantry, running from September 13- 22nd. Studentswillreceiveaspiritdaybydonating10cansduring”HungerinAction”monthtosupportthe food pantry. Students should bring their canned goods to their advisor.
FRIDAY PIZZA HOT LUNCH
The National Honor Society will be offering pizza for sale next Friday, Sept. 17th. Busy NHS student and Advisor schedules don’t allow for pizza every Friday, but when they can, they will! We’ll always give you a heads up in plenty of time so you know that you don’t have to pack a lunch those days. Pizza lunch is also $5, but additional snacks in increments of $1 will also be for sale. Food items may be charged to your SmartTution account (if approved) or students may also pay with cash.
WHAT DO…..
“The Fundamentals of Algebra”, “The Pearl” (J. Steinbeck), “The Outsiders” (SE Hinton), “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lack” (R. Skloot) and “Jesus and the Church: One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic” all have in common? They – in addition to approximately 26 other book titles – were all purchased with the $8,000+ in proceeds from this summer’s Garage Sale! Thanks to all who helped in that massive three day endeavor by setting up, donating items, monitoring sales, and even shopping. The combined efforts of all made a difference which are now in the hands of our students. Thank you.
SPEAKING OF SHOPPING
The Archangel Attic Thrift Store will be having a 10 year anniversary sale September 22nd – 25th. Everything will be 50% off plus other deals and promotions! Mark your calendars now and remember that all proceeds from the Attic directly offset tuition for all students at the school.
TIES
Thank you all for your patience as we wait…..and wait…..and wait for our new tie shipment. As soon as they come in we’ll do a blast message to all!
SENIOR PICS & PAGES

Principal’s Update:
As we close out week 3, I write to you while sitting with some of our Class of 2022 seniors as they quietly and reverently write personal letters to 5th and 6th grade students from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School(SEAS). Theseletterswillsharethoughtsonhowtobesuccessfulinmiddleandhighschoolaswell as to encourage the SEAS students to attend Lumen. The other half of our senior class is putting their faith in action by conducting service projects to clean and organize the parish.
This activity culminates our two day Senior Retreat on “Servant Leadership” hosted by our fantastic (and much loved) Campus Minister, Mrs. Liz Loeffler, and our wonderful (and much loved as well) 12th Grade Advisor/Dean of Academics Ms. Debbie Brewer. Our Seniors spent Thursday at the Holy Spirit Retreat Center off campus attending Mass, reflecting on what it means to be a servant leader and how group dynamics and human personalities can impact working together on a project or task.
Last night, our Class of 2022 hosted four guests at a sit down formal dinner (courtesy of Ms. Olive Garden!), complete with a reception, three course meal, and around the table conversation. Our seniors “dressed to the nines” and impressed all in attendance with their poise, manners, and decorum! Thank you to Mrs. Amy Locke and Mrs. Stephanie Van Tuyl for your help in setting up, plating meals, and clean up–we couldn’t have done it without you! This awesome annual tradition at Lumen–where we focus on our soon-to-be graduates–was a great way to end this week.
Thank you to all who have answered Anne’s survey of our vaccination rate within our school. We will publish the results next week.
Finally, from my family to yours, I hope you enjoy a restful and safe long weekend. On Monday, we pause, remember, and say thank you to all who labor and work in our country. God bless you!

Archangel Sports:
Soccer season continues on rain or shine. This week our Jr. High and High School teams took on the Su-Valley Rams. The Jr. High team emerged victorious but our High School Archangels came up a bit short. No worries! We’re always proud of our athletes no matter the game outcome. Next week the team will be on the road to Healy, stay tuned for news from afar.

PICTURE DAY!
School Picture Day is next Tuesday, September 7th. Fitzgerald Photography has made ordering photos a little easier this year with ordering done online after picture day (no more paper forms!) You may pre-register for ordering and will be notified when the photos are ready to be ordered. Use the link below to preregister:http://tzgeraldphotography.fotomerchanthv.com/clients/l umen-christi/l umen-christi-2021-2022/optIn
You have up to 10 days after picture day to order photos which will be delivered to the school. Orders placed after day 10 will be shipped directly home at your expense.
Senior Parents Class of 2022
Every year the Yearbook staff must submit a predetermined amount of pages on a set deadline to Jostens, our Yearbook company. For this first page submission deadline, we are kindly requesting to have all Senior Pages submitted to us by October 29, 2021. As a reminder, the Senior Page is the full page that parents traditionally create for their graduate along with a little message of well-wishes and prayers. The pages can be created in JPEG or PDF and when completed should be sent to our Yearbook email: Yearbook@lumenchristiak.org
We also hope that you have had time to take Senior photos of your Graduate over the summer. Fall would be another good time to take it if you haven’t! The photo does not have to be taken by a professional photographer, though it is preferred. If you have a good camera, you may take the photo yourself. Either way, send us a 300 dpi quality photo that is in focus (not blurry) and has a nice background.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact our Yearbook Team by sending an email to Yearbook@lumenchristiak.org
COLD vs. COVID
Back to school season…..ahhhh….when everyone’s germs start to co-mingle and viruses start cropping up all over the place. While wearing masks certainly helps cut down on the transmission of all kinds of yuck, the ‘common cold’ is always lurking out there. While a cold and COVID share some similar traits, there are also distinct differences:
Cold
✓ Sore Throat ✓ Fatigue
✓ Headache ✓ Cough
✓ Stuffy Nose
COVID
✓ Sore Throat ✓ Fatigue
✓ Headache
✓ Cough (“drier” than a cold cough)
✓ Can’t smell or taste (not because of a stuffy nose) ✓ Nausea & Vomiting
✓ Diarrhea
✓ Fever
As always, our parents remain our 1st line of defense in keeping all students and staff healthy. We know there will be days where they wake up with just a headache (were they up late doing homework?) or just a stuffy nose (is it allergy season?) but if your student is exhibiting a combination of the symptoms, or the one symptom they have is moderate-severe…. please keep them home! Call the Front Office at 245-9231 or email lchs@lumenchristiak.org to report their absence. If you suspect COVID and have questions about those specific protocols, including testing and quarantine, please call Anne at 273-1530 or email agore@lumenchristiak.org. Thank you!

Principal’s Update:
As we approach the end of the second week in school, I wanted to reiterate and reinforce our COVID protocols instituted this year. We appreciate everyone’s support in implementing these procedures to mitigate our risk during this challenging time:
● Daily screening by parents/guardians for signs and symptoms. If sick, do not come to school and go get tested! If you have a question, call the front office.
● Social distancing within classrooms to the greatest extent possible.
● Ventilating areas (opening doors and windows) as much as possible.
● Limiting interactions between junior high and high school students.
● Encouraging proper hygiene practices throughout the day.
● During lunch, our high school students are limited to no more than 12 in a classroom. 7th and 8th graders are spread out in the gym.
● Daily cleaning of the school building by janitorial staff.
● Universal masking for all students, staff, and visitors in the school and gym buildings. Additionally, as we plan the details of school activities and events, we continually evaluate everything from a safety and health perspective and will prudently make decisions to modify or change based on the current situation.
Finally, a special shout out to Sam Kaplan, Class of 2023, who earned his Eagle Scout award this week after years of hard work and dedication. Sam’s Eagle Project is the enhancements made to our community garden near the picnic tables. Well done, Sam!
Campus Ministry:
It is wonderful to be back with our students and families!
Thank you to Fr.Tom, Archbishop Emeritus Schweitz, our senior class, and our choir for a beautiful opening of School Mass and School Blessing last Friday. After Mass, Toby Agosti and Frankie Locke carried the Christ candle from St. Benedict Church, transferring the Light of Christ to our school.
Thursday and Friday of this coming week our seniors will be on retreat at the Holy Spirit Center. Please keep them in your prayers as they take time away from the worries of everyday life to commune with Christ and one another.
● Confessions are offered every Monday morning beginning at 7 a.m. in the Archangel Chapel
● Daily Mass is offered every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 7 a.m. in the Archangel Chapel
Prayer for Our School: Powerful and almighty God, as our school year begins we ask your blessing on Lumen Christi. Let our love for You and one another be evident every day, through our words, thoughts and actions. Jesus, ever-faithful and unchanging, fill us with Your strength and perfect peace each morning and throughout each day. Help us to speak Your truth and light always. May everything that happens here bring glory to Your name. Thank You for the gifts of our students, teachers, faculty, staff, coaches, parents, religious and all who guide our journey in Your most Holy Name. Amen
Prayer over classrooms: God, bless each classroom and all who study inside. May the strength of its walls bring our students safety, give peace within and keep trouble without; and may the Holy Spirit fill all who pass through. Amen
Happy Birthday Kallen Cain and Malcolm Locke!

Archangel Sports:
Congratulations to both our Jr. High and High School soccer teams who went head to head with Our Lady of the Valley on Tuesday, Aug 24th. While both games ended in a tie, shout out to Gaius Carlson (8th grade) and Toby Agosti (12th grade) for the goals scored in each game. Make no mistake tho – ALL players contributed to their team success!

National Honor Society Tutoring
NHS is offering tutoring every Tuesday from 2-3 pm in Mrs Craig’s room. NHS members will be there to provide help with all subjects and we encourage anyone interested to stop in for any tutoring needs. Please email Mrs. Craig with any questions: acraig@lumenchristiak.org
Parent Share Hours
Thanks to one and all who helped with projects around the school before school even started! Covering chairs, hauling dirt, helping out with the garages sale back in June or helping out at the Archangel Attic over the summer. Make sure you log your hours in the Front Office! If you come into the school you can fill those in yourself in the Family Share Hour binder (we’ll show you where it is) or you can email them to lchs@lumenchristiak.org and we’ll get them filled in for you. If emailing, please write down the date, activity and number of hours spent. As a reminder, families have a 40 hour requirement per year (20 hours for single parent families and families with other children enrolled at SEAS.)
Archangel Attic
Speaking of volunteer needs, the Archangel Attic is an awesome way to knock out hours and
support the school! Over the course of the year we have approximately 650 hours worth of time we need to fill….that seems pretty daunting but if every family worked 8 hours, we’d be solid gold-knocked-outta-the-park-perfect! Remember that 100% of the proceeds from the Attic go towards reducing tuition for all families and over the past 10 years those proceeds have exceeded $1,000,000. Yes. One. Million. Dollars. Our inaugural shout out goes to Kateri Everard (10th grade) who danced with her Irish Dance School at the State Fair this past weekend. Even with an injured knee and temps almost too warm to dance on stage, Kateri Irish-stepped her heart out! Way to go, Kateri…maybe you can give some of the staff some lessons : )
Have a great rest of week and weekend!

Principal’s Update:
What an amazing first week back in school! We did have a few bumps in the road as we got adjusted to over 100 students in the building for the first time ever, but we are all settling into a nice routine. We finished the week off with our “Mass of the Holy Spirit” and brought the Light of Christ into our school and blessed all students and classrooms. Thank you Archbishop Emeritus Schwietz for joining us in this proud annual tradition.
Our soccer teams will put their hard practice into competition next week, so I hope you will consider coming down to Kincaid turf field, grabbing a YETI hot dog for dinner, and cheering on our junior high and high school Archangels!
Have a blessed and safe weekend!
Campus Ministry:
Summer Blessing for Families
May we make our homes places of relaxation,
joy, love, peace and safety.
May we be generous and considerate,
not thinking only about ourselves,
but helping others enjoy the blessings of the summertime. Lord God, Creator of all things,
guide our steps and strengthen our hearts
during these months of summer and vacation days. Grant us refreshment of mind and body.
May we constantly strive to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our loved ones and in the world around us as we enjoy the warm days of summertime.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Anonymous donor gifts Lumen Christi Science Department $20,000
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Lumen Christi High School has been named the recipient of a $20,000 biotechnology grant to its Science Department. The award comes from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous. It was revealed LCHS is the only Alaska institution to be named, all other awardees are located in Southern California.
LCHS has put science at the forefront of its curriculum since its inception 25 years ago. The grant will give teachers and staff an opportunity to take this focus to the next level.
“One of the attributes of a Lumen graduate is that they can think critically and solve problems; thanks to this grant award, Lumen students now have the opportunity to examine current issues in conjunction with lab experiences using the most up-to-date biotech equipment and materials. This means Lumen students are poised to become the next generation of problem solvers incorporating ethical perspectives,” says Math and Science Department Chair Debbie Brewer.
Lumen Christi Principal Brian Ross says, “We are both humbled and proud to have been selected for this generous award. We know our students will benefit with authentic experiences that will prepare them for careers of the future.”
