Principal’s Update:
November is a month where we remember those who have gone before us. We do so through All Saint’s Day, All Souls Day, Dia de los Muertos, and this week, Veteran’s Day. Let us keep in our prayers and thoughts all those who have sacrificed on our behalf, in our own families and beyond. I ask you to keep the family of Johnny Lopetrone in your prayers this weekend as his funeral Mass is celebrated on Saturday. Mr. Lopetrone was an active member of the St. Benedict’s parish community and an ardent supporter of Lumen Christi. Among his many talents was woodworking, and he hand crafted the wood panel in our front entry way (which holds our teachers’ photos and other school memorabilia) as well as the beautiful oak bookcases throughout each classroom. Thank you Lopetrone family. May you rest in eternal peace, Johnny!
We have developed a COVID protocols survey, which was an idea generated at our recent parent forum. We are asking our families to complete the survey and provide us critical feedback as we look to continue to maintain a safe and effective plan for our school community. The survey can be found here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LumenCOVIDSurvey2021
The survey will remain open for one week and close Thursday, November 18. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and comments.
Last week, we threw out a challenge to our families to help grow our parent participation percentage for our annual LUMENary Drive. Many of you answered the call, but we hope more families will jump in and contribute by next Thursday! Please see details below, help contribute to our annual fund, and let’s earn a day off on Wednesday, Nov 24th! Have a great weekend!

LUMENary Drive CHALLENGE
If you read LUMEN News last week, then you read about the LUMENary Drive Challenge – namely, we’re trying to get to at least 75% family participation by next Friday, November 19th. If we do, then we ALL get Wednesday, November 24th off ! An extra day of vacation!!
Currently, 41 of our 82 families have given, which puts us at a cool, even 50%. We’re getting there, but time is of the essence! We need 20 more families to donate at a level that is right for them, in the next 8 days. Giving is easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy! You can drop off a cash or check at the Front Desk with Kim or open your camera on your phone and hold it over this QR Code. You’ll be taken to the school’s website where you can make an online donation.
THANK YOU!
STUFFING DRIVE (Nov 8-18) !!!
Every year, Lumen Christi hosts a “Stuffing Drive” to support Catholic Social Services over the Thanksgivingseason. Students are encouraged to bring in at least ten (10) stuffing boxes in order to earn a Lumen spirit wear day. Boxes will be stacked initially in advisory classrooms, but when we have enough on hand, the Student Leadership Board will begin to build a creative structure in our front entryway! Over the years, these structures have become more and more elaborate! The class with the most number of boxes per student will earn ice cream sandwiches after lunch one day and the Lumen Spirit Shield! Let’s pull together and “stuff” our classrooms to support this Drive!
Annual Feuary Fundraising Gala!
The Gala Team continues to brainstorm on ways you can help. We’re still looking for a 7th grade Class Project Lead (sign up here to take on this awesome task…. https://signup.com/go/ttHZkjz).
We’ve even got some ideas of projects so that part is done!
Or if you’re looking for an easy way to earn a couple of Share Hours, sign up to donate a bottle of wine! For every bottle (please, $25-$50 range) you’ll earn one Share Hour, but anything right at $50 (or above!) will earn you TWO! So sign up here to donate: https://signup.com/go/wnLNynX and then drop your bottle(s) off in the Front Office.
Questions? Ideas? Do you own or know of a business that might consider donating an item, gift certificate or becoming an event Archangel Sponsor? Email gala@lumenchristiak.org email or call Anne at 273-1530 for more information!

LUMENary Drive….33-75-19-24 HIKE!!!
OK, for those of you who were on Wednesday night’s Parent/Principal Forum call, you heard the 33-75-19-24 Challenge throw down. If you were unable to attend – here’s the deal: While there is an overall financial goal for the fund drive ($75k), the Lumen family goal is 100% participation, at whatever financial level feels right for you. To help us reach that goal, the following challenge has been issued….If we can get 33 more families to donate, which would get us to 75% participation, by November 19th, then we ALL get Wednesday, November 24th – the day before Thanksgiving – OFF! Ahhhhhh….an extra day to sleep in, extend a mini-vacation with, relax as a family!
Giving is EASY!!
You can drop off a cash or check at the Front Desk with Kim or open your camera on your phone and hold it over this QR Code. You’ll be taken to the school’s website where you can make an online donation. THANK YOU!

Veterans Day
In honor of our military Veterans, students will be allowed to wear Red, White & Blue or, patriotic dress up, or if a member of their family served, a military uniform on Thursday, November 11th in tribute to those who have served and continue to serve our country today. For example, in previous years, some of our students have proudly worn the Air Force uniform worn by their Dad or Grandpa or a portion of the Navy uniform worn by their Grandma. Let’s show our patriotic pride and support our Veterans!

LCHS on TV News!
This past week we had Univision, one of the largest American-Mexican Spanish-language television networks in the US visit our campus! Univision joined our Spanish-I class in celebration of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Students helped set up an ofrenda, made sugar skulls, brought in pan de muerto (bread of the dead: a type of sweet roll), and were treated to a Mariachi Band! According to Univision staff, the segment may not air for nearly a year but we’ll keep you posted! Thank you to our Spanish teacher Deacon Gustavo Azpilcueta for organizing this event!
Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos) is a two day holiday that reunites the living and dead. Families create ofrendas (Offerings) to honor their departed family members that have passed. These altars are decorated with bright yellow marigold flowers, photos of the departed, and the favorite foods and drinks of the one being honored. The offerings are believed to encourage visits from the land of the dead as the departed souls hear their prayers, smell their foods and join in the celebrations!
“Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos).” Day of the Dead, 2019, dayofthedead.holiday.
Student Recognition
We would like to recognize two of our amazing Lumen students who participated in last weekend’s ASD Region IV Swimming and Diving Championship meet. Mia Sperbeck (10th grade) competes with Dimond High School and came in 2nd place in her 100 freestyle and 3rd place in her 50 freestyle races. Her relay team took 1st in both races and one of the relay’s was a Dimond High School relay record time!
Congratulations Mia Sperbeck!

LUMENary Drive
By now you’ve all received a letter from Mr. Ross and Ms. Gore regarding the school’s Annual Fund Drive, and we couldn’t be more pleased to announce that we’re off to a SERIOUSLY FANTASTIC start! Like….truly fabulous. How fabulous? How about this:
Total funds raised: $34,005 (45% of our total goal of $75,000). WOW!! Total number of donors: 48
Total number of Lumen family donors: 24, or 50% of total donors.
These 24 family donations represent 30% of our school families – to them, we say THANK YOU (or in the voice of Ed Sullivan if you’re of a certain age to remember….Thenk yewwwww, thenk yew verrrrry much!)
To our remaining families we say Please consider donating. Our goal is 100% family participation – being able to go out in the community with the statement “100% of teachers and staff, 100% of school board members and 100% of families give to the Annual Drive” is one of the most powerful statements we’re able to make in seeking other sources of community support. So – please, consider a donation at an amount that feels right for your family. Operators are standing by to take your donation by phone! OK not really, but Ms. Gore is, and you can call her at 273-1530 with a credit card number, or send a check in with your student, we can even add it to your SmartTuition if that’s easier for you. Please – and THANKS!

Every year the Yearbook staff must submit a predetermined amount of pages on a set deadline to Jostens, our Yearbook company. For this first page submission deadline, we are kindly requesting to have all Senior Pages submitted to us by October 29, 2021. As a reminder, the Senior Page is the full page that parents traditionally create for their graduates along with a little message of well-wishes and prayers. The pages can be created in JPEG or PDF and when completed should be sent to our Yearbook email: Yearbook@lumenchristiak.org We also hope that you have had time to take Senior photos of your Graduate over the summer. Fall would be another good time to take it if you haven’t! The photo does not have to be taken by a professional photographer, though it is preferred. If you have a good camera, you may take the photo yourself. Either way, send us a 300 dpi quality photo that is in focus (not blurry) and has a nice background.

In addition to contract tracing students and a myriad of other activities, Anne Gore has been busy on the Advancement and Enrollment fronts. Within the next few days you’ll be receiving the annual LUMENary Drive appeal letter and brochure. Our goal is to raise $75,000 this year and we are already on our way. Thank you to those families who donated during Back to School Registration. We hope the rest of our families will hear the call to go above and beyond paying tuition and support our fund drive.
Also arriving in mailboxes but not until the end of the month, the 2020-21 Annual Report. Stay tuned for that, it’s always a nice recap of the previous year.

In the days to come we will focus on protection for the most vulnerable members of our communities: the aged, the sick, the poor, the hungry, those suffering emotional and mental unrest, the unborn, those fleeing oppression, and end to capital punishment, and the persecuted.
- See information from the office for details about the “Teen Girls Retreat” this Saturday.
- Confessions are offered every Monday morning beginning at 7 a.m. in the Archangel Chapel
- Daily Mass is offered every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 7 a.m. in the Archangel Chapel
- We all worry about our kids! I am always available for students and parents. You can contact me at eloeffler@lumenchristiak.org.
- We are always looking for service opportunities. If you know of an organization that can use volunteers please contact Mrs. Loeffler.
Happy Birthday this week to Sophia Vierra, Jules Butcher, Erik Holmquist, and Mrs Brewer!

PSAT October 16th!
A gentle reminder to 9-11th graders that the PSAT will take place on Saturday, October 16th from 8am-12pm at Our Lady of Guadalupe, instead of being offered during the school day. This is for two primary reasons: 1) scheduling it on a Saturday gives us back precious content area class time that would otherwise be used to administer a standardized test and 2) scheduling it on a
Saturday makes it more realistic for those who will later have to sleepily trudge to Grace Christian or UAA to take the ACT or SAT on a Saturday morning in their junior and senior year.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish (OLG) has invited Lumen Christi students to participate in this rich and ancient tradition from Peru. There are two dates that students can participate:
October 16th (this Saturday) at 7:00 pm as part of the Novena at OLG. After praying the Rosary as a parish community, Mr. Ross will speak for a few minutes about attending Mass and Catholic school. We hope you will consider attending.
October 24th (next Sunday) at the 11:30 am Mass at OLG. Our Spanish classes will participate in several parts of the Mass. OLG will reserve pews for our students and parents, so please consider attending. Students, wear your Mass uniform!
SENIOR PICS & PAGES
If you have any questions, feel free to contact our Yearbook Team by sending an email to Yearbook@lumenchristiak.org
