Principal’s Update:
Congratulations to Class of 2022 senior Frankie Locke and Class of 2026 8th grader Noah Tzvetcoff who won the annual Lumen Christmas card design contest! Each of them received cool $100 cash money for their creative efforts. Their unique designs will adorn our Christmas card, which will go out to over 400 members of the Lumen Christi community, including parents. Cards should be arriving in mailboxes soon.
As part of Advent, our students participated in the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the 7th period this week. We thank Father Hank and Father Shijo from Our Lady of Guadalupe, Father Scott from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Father Steve from Holy Family Cathedral, Father Arthur from St. Andrew’s, and FAther Tom from St. Benedict’s for ministering to our students in this “spiritual resurrection” of love, mercy, and healing. We will hold another Reconciliation service during Lent in the spring.
At Lumen, we pride ourselves on our academic rigor. The myriad of student presentations in class I have observed over the past week have been a prime example of this academic excellence. Student presentation topics included:
“The Long Term Effects of Concussions on the Brains of High School Students”
“Negative Effects of Social Media on the Behavior and Development of Children”
“Using Systems of the Future to Improve Correctional Facilities”
“The Impact of Suicide on Alaskan Native Communities”
“The Effects of School-Related Stress on Teenage Girls”
“The Catholic Stance on Embryo Adoption”
“The Ethics of Organ Donation”
“The Ethics of Drone Usage”
“Therapeutic Stem Cell Therapy”
“Assisted Reproductive Technologies”
“The Ethics of Reproductive Cloning and the Use of Humans in Trials”
From my standpoint, our students are knocking these papers and presentations out of the park across the board–truly home runs! I did not do this level of academic research and writing until I was in graduate school, and yet, our Lumen students are doing this in high school! Simply impressive! Students and parents alike should take great pride in the accomplishments of our young people this semester.
Finally, we are making the final few adjustments to our COVID survey report. I anticipate sending this out to our community under separate email correspondence tomorrow. It promises to be a bit lengthy, so thank you in advance for your patience and for taking the time to read the final product.

Come, Lord Jesus! Come! May this Advent be a time of deep renewal in my life, dear Lord. May it be a time in which I strive with all my heart to seek out Your gentle and profound voice. Give me the grace, dear Lord, to turn away from the many noises of the world that compete for my attention and to turn only to You and to all You wish to say. Come, Lord Jesus, come into my life more deeply during this Advent season. Jesus, I trust in You.

Final Exam and Bus Schedule
The final exam schedule in the Handbook does not correctly reflect our school starting time this year. Therefore, please use the following Final Exam schedule for Dec 14-16:
The fall exam daily schedule is:
Dec 14: Periods 1 and 2 Dec 15: Periods 3 and 4 Dec 16: Periods 5 and 6
The hourly schedule each day during finals is:
7:30-7:40am: Snack
7:40-7:45am: Pledge, Prayer, and Morning Announcements 7:45-9:15am: Final Exam
9:15-9:30am: Snack
9:30-11:00am: Final Exam
11:00am: Dismissal
Bus schedules will be as follows:
Morning runs from both St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and St. Andrew/CSS will remain the same. Afternoon runs will be as follows:
St. Andrew/CSS: This bus will depart Lumen at 11:05a and arrive at CSS at 11:20a; Depart CSS at 11:25 and arrive at St. Andrew Parish at 11:50p.
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton: If possible, we encourage parents of SEAS bus riders to pick up at Lumen at 11a as we will only have one bus run to SEAS, and we have more students than seats. For those parents unable to pick up at Lumen, the bus will leave here at 11:05a and arrive at SEAS at 11:20.
For both the St. Andrew/CSS and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton runs, please pick your students up right at this adjusted arrival time. We know these early dismissal times can be tricky for logistics, but limiting the number of finals per day to two both limits the amount of stress on students and allows for max study time at home!
27th Annual Gala Fundraiser
Thanks to those of you who completed the family survey that went out last week ~ we received some terrific feedback! One thing we learned was that people are definitely interested in experiences: new things to try, new places to go. To that end – do YOU have a get-away you can share? Girdwood condo? Kenai cabin? Timeshare in the Bahamas?! If you do, please consider donating some time. Our crackshot Gala Team will take that and run with it, spin it into an amazing package certain to bring in mega-bucks. Thanks in advance.

Lumen Legacy
Starting with this edition, we’ll now include a “Lumen Legacy” section to highlight news from former students and/or their families.
Our first shout out goes to Shon Nagel (2019), who is enrolled at Arizona State University but is spending the year abroad in Belgium. Studying political science (both at ASU and in Brussels), Shon reports that the architecture, history and meeting new people from around the world are the best parts of livin’ this new best life. He may have also mentioned that the beer is quite tasty, too.
Additional shout out to Gerianne Thorsness, alumni parent of Sophia (2015), Annie (2017), and Kaiya (2020) for this idea to share alumni news!
Other alumni students and families – we’d love to hear from you! Email LCHS@lumenchristiak.org to tell us what you’re up to these days.
Celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Please join us for the Feast of Our Lady Of Guadalupe this Sunday, December 12th as Our Lady of Guadalupe Cathedral has organized a mass full of rich hispanic culture for this specific day. OLG has invited all Lumen Christi families to experience this beautiful opportunity along with some delicious food from several Latino countries (served after mass). They will reserve seats for the Lumen community, so please consider attending.
Parent Share Hours/Faith In Action hours will be earned if parents/students attend.

Principal’s Update:
A couple of updates for you. First, our School Board and faculty will be reviewing the data from the recent COVID survey over the next few days. We hope to have the survey data (without comments), the Board’s summary review, and our school’s proposed plan for Spring Semester to you by mid next week. Thank you for your patience to this point as we try to ensure we have the best possible plan going forward.
Secondly, and most importantly, I want to formally announce the kick off of our high school boys and girls basketball season! Practices started yesterday and we have a record number of athletes participating–that is so awesome! We are blessed to have Mr. Adam Trombley returning to coach the boys program. Adam has been with us for five years, and during that time, he and our boys have won the Peninsula Conference regional championships in 2020 and 2021 and are the reigning 1A State champions from spring 2021! The boys are looking to defend their state title, so it promises to be an exciting season! Additionally, Mr. Tom Gregory is returning to coach the girls program and assistant coach the boys. Tom has been with us for five years as well and coached the girls to a Peninsula Conference regional championship in spring 2021! Tom and the girls team are looking forward to defending this title as well against some very competitive opponents.
During the season, which runs until mid-March, our athletes will sacrifice many hours in practice and be in our gym over Christmas and Spring Break honing their skills, developing their bodies, growing in virtue and character, and strengthening the bonds of teamwork. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them as they embark on this journey. I ask each and every family to come out and support our teams as the game schedule gets in full swing. Your first opportunity is Dec. 16-18 when we will host a tournament of teams in our gym following final exam week and the start of Christmas break. Good luck Archangels–our school is with you!

The first two are smaller, around a $5 minimum each. The third gift is larger, around a $10 minimum. Usually the third gift is given in person and the giver’s identity is revealed, but this is up to the student. We will assign givers/receivers later that week so students have time to prepare for the exchange starting the 6th.
Junior high and high school are having separate exchanges so students will more likely give to someone they are familiar with and to make it easier to secretly give them the gifts.

This week we pray for all who have lost loved ones to death during the holiday season.
Heavenly Father, The holidays are times of joy and love, but those who have lost a loved one to death during the holidays suffer alone in silence. We commend our friends and family members who have passed from our world during the holiday season to almighty God, and entrust them to You, our Creator. May they rest in Your arms, Lord. You formed them from the dust of the earth. May holy Mary, the angels and all the saints welcome them now that they have gone forth from this life. May Christ who was crucified for them, bring freedom and peace. May Christ who died for us all admit them into his garden of paradise. May Christ, the true Shepherd, embrace them as one of his flock. Bless and comfort the friends and family who miss them and long to be with them again. Give them happy memories of the holidays spent together.
Amen
● Junior Class retreat will be Friday, December 10th. More information will be emailed over the holiday.

● We pray for all suffering mental, emotional, and psychological unrest, that they will be healed

A BIG, BIG shoutout to our parents and guardians who rose to the challenge and helped meet and exceed our 75% family participation goal for our annual LUMENary Drive! As you heard via Remind, I doubled down and extended another challenge to take us to 85%! Thanks to you, we made our 85% parent participation goal today, so not only do we get Wednesday, Nov 24th off, all students and staff have a “casual week” (no uniform) for Friday, December 10th AND Finals Week! A special thanks as well to one of our generous families who matched all these contributions with a $500 donation–AWESOME! A job well done across the board–thank you, thank you! I hope all families enjoy the extra holiday as we give thanks for our many, many blessings! WE ARE BETTER TOGETHER!
We wish our varsity girls volleyball team the best of luck over the next couple of days at the Regional tournament held here at Lumen. If you want to catch some spirited volleyball action, come down to our gym and cheer on our Lady Archangels!
We also want to keep in our thoughts and prayers Frankie Locke, Joseph Moriarty, Brooke Ahrenholz, and Liv Crosby from our rifle team who will compete in the Jordyn Durr Memorial Rifle Match Friday evening at Service High School. Jordyn Durr was a Service High Navy JROTC cadet and air rifle shooter who was tragically killed by a drunk driver while walking home in August 2013. Our entire rifle team has been working hard over the past few months to hone marksmanship skills and ended our “virtual” season3-2! These four shooters qualified for Friday’s memorial match and will compete against teams and individuals from all the “Big 8” high schools in the Anchorage School District. Good luck Archangel Sharpshooters!
Finally, thank you to all who have provided feedback on our COVID survey. At this point, we have received 56 responses! For full transparency, I have asked our School Board to establish a subcommittee to review and analyze the data and determine the best way to go forward in presenting the results back to our community. I appreciate the School Board’s commitment to this important task and I look forward to the subcommittee’s analysis.
On behalf of our school staff, we hope everyone has a blessed and safe weekend!

This week we pray for parents who have lost children. Mother Mary, you know the pain and sorrow of losing the child you carried within you, held in your arms, and loved more than your own life. Today we ask your intercession for the healing of all parents who have lost a child to death. We ask your intercession also, for the repose of the souls of children who died before they were even born, those lost in infancy, childhood or as young adults as we pray, Hail Mary… Amen

Other fun facts:
*It took us until March 14th last year, to get to where we are today on November 18th.
*It took until May 10th to reach our final goal of $75,000; we have every intention of reaching our goal by December 31st….or sooner!
While the numbers above illustrate the significant difference between this year and last, more importantly they show that we are a community who pays our own way. We are families, extended families, teachers, staff and members of a Board of Directors who find common ground in, and dig deep to support our shared goals of Living Faith, Celebrating Family and Achieving Excellence. Thank you Lumen community for an extraordinary 60 days of giving! We are truly better together!
And please, if you haven’t donated yet, it’s never too late! (C’mon, you know I couldn’t go without asking again!)
Annual February Fundraising Gala! Saturday, Feuary 12, 2022
The Procurement Team is busy at work and the items they’ve been securing are MIGHTY FINE! The ever popular (and highly sought after) week in Mexico was just confirmed today for the live auction (Gads, wouldn’t a little warmth feel good right about now?) Fishing and rafting trips, ATV tours, flightseeing trips, kitchen, car and household goodies – it’s kind of hard to keep up on it all – and it’s only November! Rest assured there’s something for everyone and you won’t want to miss out.
We’re still looking for a crafty 7th grade parent to help lead a project for that class (we’ve got loads of ideas to help you with); and an easy way to get some Share Hours in is to sign up to donate a bottle of wine. Sign ups to help are below.
Questions? Ideas? Do you own or know of a business that might consider donating an item, gift certificate or becoming an event Archangel Sponsor? Email gala@lumenchristiak.org email or call Anne at 273-1530 for more information!

Principal’s Update:
November is a month where we remember those who have gone before us. We do so through All Saint’s Day, All Souls Day, Dia de los Muertos, and this week, Veteran’s Day. Let us keep in our prayers and thoughts all those who have sacrificed on our behalf, in our own families and beyond. I ask you to keep the family of Johnny Lopetrone in your prayers this weekend as his funeral Mass is celebrated on Saturday. Mr. Lopetrone was an active member of the St. Benedict’s parish community and an ardent supporter of Lumen Christi. Among his many talents was woodworking, and he hand crafted the wood panel in our front entry way (which holds our teachers’ photos and other school memorabilia) as well as the beautiful oak bookcases throughout each classroom. Thank you Lopetrone family. May you rest in eternal peace, Johnny!
We have developed a COVID protocols survey, which was an idea generated at our recent parent forum. We are asking our families to complete the survey and provide us critical feedback as we look to continue to maintain a safe and effective plan for our school community. The survey can be found here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LumenCOVIDSurvey2021
The survey will remain open for one week and close Thursday, November 18. Thanks in advance for your thoughts and comments.
Last week, we threw out a challenge to our families to help grow our parent participation percentage for our annual LUMENary Drive. Many of you answered the call, but we hope more families will jump in and contribute by next Thursday! Please see details below, help contribute to our annual fund, and let’s earn a day off on Wednesday, Nov 24th! Have a great weekend!

LUMENary Drive CHALLENGE
If you read LUMEN News last week, then you read about the LUMENary Drive Challenge – namely, we’re trying to get to at least 75% family participation by next Friday, November 19th. If we do, then we ALL get Wednesday, November 24th off ! An extra day of vacation!!
Currently, 41 of our 82 families have given, which puts us at a cool, even 50%. We’re getting there, but time is of the essence! We need 20 more families to donate at a level that is right for them, in the next 8 days. Giving is easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy! You can drop off a cash or check at the Front Desk with Kim or open your camera on your phone and hold it over this QR Code. You’ll be taken to the school’s website where you can make an online donation.
THANK YOU!
STUFFING DRIVE (Nov 8-18) !!!
Every year, Lumen Christi hosts a “Stuffing Drive” to support Catholic Social Services over the Thanksgivingseason. Students are encouraged to bring in at least ten (10) stuffing boxes in order to earn a Lumen spirit wear day. Boxes will be stacked initially in advisory classrooms, but when we have enough on hand, the Student Leadership Board will begin to build a creative structure in our front entryway! Over the years, these structures have become more and more elaborate! The class with the most number of boxes per student will earn ice cream sandwiches after lunch one day and the Lumen Spirit Shield! Let’s pull together and “stuff” our classrooms to support this Drive!
Annual Feuary Fundraising Gala!
The Gala Team continues to brainstorm on ways you can help. We’re still looking for a 7th grade Class Project Lead (sign up here to take on this awesome task…. https://signup.com/go/ttHZkjz).
We’ve even got some ideas of projects so that part is done!
Or if you’re looking for an easy way to earn a couple of Share Hours, sign up to donate a bottle of wine! For every bottle (please, $25-$50 range) you’ll earn one Share Hour, but anything right at $50 (or above!) will earn you TWO! So sign up here to donate: https://signup.com/go/wnLNynX and then drop your bottle(s) off in the Front Office.
