Principal’s Update: What a busy school year it has been already! Our varsity coed soccer team earned a 3-2 record in the Tri-Valley Tournament in Healy last week. We had two students, Garrett Renfro and Sophia Dupras, run for and represent Lumen at the New Balance XC Classic meet at Russian Jack Springs park last Saturday. And this past Monday, our student body prayed the Rosary in honor and remembrance of 9/11.
Today, thanks to the hard work and commitment of our teachers and PVO, we had an awesome taco lunch! Together, we raised over $900! The contributions will go directly to relief efforts in support of the National Catholic Education Association’s “Student to Student” Campaign for Catholic communities impacted by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. More information on this national campaign can be found at http://ncea.org/sts. Way to go, Archangels!
Our Spirit Week continues and we and look forward to the Homecoming Bonfire on Friday night and the Dance on Saturday.
This weekend is also the annual St. Benedict Ministry Fair. Please see the PVO note below requesting parent and student volunteers to sing praises about our school and thank the generous parishioners of St. Benedict Parish. We could use your help!
In closing, a continuation of reasons why a Catholic school education is important:
11. Learning the connection between faith and reason
12. Sharing faith journeys with each other
13. Seeing Father Tom and Father Whitney around the school every day
14. Helping on service projects
15. Hearing Jesus’ name on a daily basis and not as a swear word
Gold Cards: PAST DUE: If you haven’t turned in your Gold Card money, please get it into the office as soon as possible. Any unsold cards also need to be turned in.
Scrip: Have you heard of Scrip fundraising yet? This is a great way to help Lumen raise funds while you do your everyday shopping and gift giving. Please see Mrs. Estes with any questions you may have. In the meantime, visit shopwithscrip.com to learn more. After visiting shopwithscrip.com and you’d like to set up your account, please call Mrs. Estes for Lumen Christi’s enrollment code. Our first order deadline of the year will be on Friday, September 15th at 1pm.
Junior High Activity Days: While the HS is on retreat, the JH students will be participating in several activities. To prepare for this, we will be sending a permission form home with them on Friday. Included in the activities will be several service projects along with some fun events. Tentatively students will be doing the following:
Thursday:
Students and teachers will be helping to clean the grounds at the cemetery. They should wear layers and dress for the weather. We will be working even if it rains! Anyone who has sod cutters, rakes, clippers, etc should bring them. We could also use any extras you want to loan. Gloves are also recommended. Students will be transported in vans.
We will also be walking to the bowling alley in the afternoon.
Lunch and snacks will be provided for the day.
Friday:
We will be doing several service projects at the school as well as attending Mass and enjoying some fun activities. Snacks are provided for the day. Dismissal is at 12:20 PM as usual.
A $20 fee for the service, food, bowling, and other activities will be added to your November Smart Tuition Invoice. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs. Craig or Mrs. Brewer.
Last Year’s Community Service Forms: If students would like to keep their community service forms from last school year for their reference, they may pick them up from Mrs. Estes. The summary sheets will be added to their student file and the individual forms will be available in the office until October 2nd at which point they will be recycled.
PVO News: Wow! We have had a great start to this school year and we are blessed to have so many wonderful parent volunteers that have stepped up to help. Our first PVO meeting of the year was on Tuesday evening and we had great conversation and guidance on how we should work together this year. A heartfelt thank you to all that have volunteered so far.

Principal’s Update: Greetings from Healy, AK! Our varsity soccer team is up here competing in the Tri-Valley Tournament through Saturday. Spirits are high despite a tough loss against Su-Valley on Wednesday. Please pray for our Archangels as they compete up north. Congrats to our junior high soccer team in their 2-1 win over Su-Valley. They remain undefeated for the season! The team is small (11 athletes) but their will is strong!
We finished a deeply moving and meaningful retreat with our Class of 2018 Seniors last week. We spent Thursday at Camp Gorsuch in team building activities and talking about being servant leaders. The students made their own dinner over the campfire and put together a plan to grow closer as a class, improve our school, and dedicate time to the greater community. On Friday, we attended Mass with the elementary and middle school students of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic School in Wasilla. Our Seniors received a tour of the school grounds and spent a couple of hours talking to the 7th and 8th graders about life in high school and how to be leaders within their school. We finished with a meal together and ended the day with few hours at the Alaska State Fair. Thanks to Father Whitney, Liz Loeffler, Debbie Brewer, Bob McMorrow, and Elise Zajicek for putting together a wonderful class level retreat. Our Seniors are an impressive group and we are all very proud of them! Take a look at the retreat on our Facebook page!
In closing, a couple more reasons why a Catholic school education is important:
6. Spiritual retreats (next one is the Sept 21-22)
7. Reading Scripture regularly
8. Praying with the entire school when disasters or tragedies occur (a special prayer for those affected by the hurricanes in Texas and Florida and the Caribbean)
9. No school on Easter Monday!
10. Learning responsibility for their own education through fundraising (sell those Gold Cards!)
Gold Cards: Money from Gold Card sales are due back into the front office by September 8th. If you need additional time to finish selling your Gold Cards, please let the office know.
PVO News: We had a great start to Attic Fridays!! Last Friday the Attic made an additional $400 in our extended hours! Thank you to everyone that volunteered last Friday. Please consider volunteering on one of our upcoming Attic Fridays- http://signup.com/go/cVMeBzw

PVO News: It was great to see so many parents at Back to School Night. We have had a great start to the school year and we are excited to have Mary Gore as Vice President of our PVO- thank you Mary!
PVO MEETING: Our first PVO Meeting of the year will be Tuesday, September 12th at 7pm. Please consider attending!
ATTIC FRIDAYS: Our sign up for extended hours on Fridays at the Attic are now online for the fall. Please look at the schedule and see if there is time you can help. Below are few particular areas we need filled.
-
We would like to get consistent helpers on the 2nd and 3rd Fridays of each month. If you can commit to helping every 2nd or 3rd Friday, please sign up online or contact Danielle.
-
We need Student Supervisors on Fridays from 12:30 to 3 pm to oversee up to 4 students while they complete community service hours at the Attic. Anyone that signs up for these spots should have a current background check and Safe & Sacred.
-
We would also like to have an Attic Friday Coordinator. This person would check the sign up spots each week we have extended hours, make reminder calls to helpers that are signed up, remind the Attic to put out our Friday sign, and let PVO know if we need to send out a message to recruit more volunteers for that week. This should not take more than an hour a week that we have extended Friday hours, can be done from home, and count as fundraising share hours!

Sometimes ASD will close some schools for weather conditions but not all schools, please listen to the radio or check ASD’s website. If Sand Lake and/or Dimond cancels school, then so will Lumen Christi.

Principal’s Update: What a beautiful first day back to school on Monday! Our students and staff started the year off right in a celebration of Mass with Archbishop Etienne, Father Tom, Father Whitney, parents, friends, and parishioners of St. Benedict’s. Following Mass, two of our Seniors, Falon Methonen and Matthew Goodwin, honoring a Lumen tradition, led their fellow students in a procession and brought the Light of Christ back into the school. Father Tom said a short prayer and then went around the school blessing students, teachers, and our classrooms.
For those of you who wonder what happens during “Advisory” at the start of school, the students and teachers start every morning as a school with the Pledge, prayer, and morning announcements from Student Government. We also end the day in prayer in grade level advisory cohorts as well.
You will see the notice below, but I look forward to seeing everyone at Back to School night on Friday, August 25th. This isn’t last year’s Back to School Night! Parents and students will be able to visit classrooms for 30 minutes and then we will all gather in the school gym for a few remarks and prayer before sharing in fellowship over a potluck dinner.
Thursday, August 24th: Since we had Mass on the 1st day of school, on Thursday students will follow a Monday Schedule.
Add/Drop Deadline: Students have until 12:30 on September 1st to make any changes to their schedules. They should meet with Mrs. Brewer to discuss any possible changes. You may email her at dbrewer@lumenchristiak.org or schedule a time to meet with her.

ATTIC FRIDAYS: Did you know that 100{d4876d85bca45a190b33d6c696456a399841af28eb325342d1f9ba09483f3a19} of the proceeds from the Archangel Attic support our school? The attic is open Monday – Friday from 10 am to 3 pm and Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm. Spread the word and encourage family and friends to donate their unused items to the Archangel Attic.
This year we will be expanding the Friday hours of the Attic from 3pm to 7pm on as many Friday’s as we can. This is an easy way to bring in more money and it could add up to as much as an extra $10,000! We will need to staff these hours with Lumen parents. This is a fun way to earn money for our school and count as fundraising share hours. Look for sign-up times at Back to School Night and we will send out an online sign up soon.
