From the Principal:
Congratulations to our Junior High Volleyball team who won second place in the final Alaska Christian Schools tournament over the weekend! After losing the first game on Friday, they came roaring back to win every game on Saturday except for the final game. Awesome job, Junior High Archangels!
At the same time the JH volleyball team was winning the silver medal, it was so inspiring to see over 30 Lumen students and over a dozen parents walk alongside or ride our Fur Rondy Parade float last Saturday. Although we ran out of York Peppermint patties (navy blue and silver = school colors) and Open House invitations in the first ¼ mile, we showcased the spirit of our school to thousands of Anchorage families. I have no idea if our participation in the Parade will lead to more student enrollment, but it was clear to me that everyone had a fun and enjoyable time together in solidarity as a Lumen family. If nothing else, our cheers, waves, and smiles showed our city that Lumen Christi is a proud, vibrant, and exciting faith community. I owe the Class of 2018 seniors and Class of 2021 freshman a pizza party since they had the highest percentage of participation among the classes, and the students who helped plan and organize the float earned an entire week of casual dress days after Spring Break (except Thursday since it is Mass day). Thank you to everyone who had a hand in this successful event for our school, which is now a new annual tradition!
Our entire school enjoyed a wonderful presentation yesterday from Mr. Chris Padgett. Humorous and engaging, Chris kept the students at the edge of their seats. He wrapped up his powerful talk by encouraging all of us to strengthen our relationships not only with each other, but most importantly, with Christ. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6)! A special shout out to the Holy Spirit, and Kellie Thomson, Mom of Liam (Class of 2022), for organizing this opportunity for our students!
We wish our boys and girls basketball teams much success and victory for the rest of this week at Regions here at Lumen. We have already had two wins on Wednesday night, and we are looking for more. We hope you come out and support our Archangel basketball program, either in selling concessions or cheering on from the crowd! Go Lumen!
Announcements:
Tomorrow!! Lenten Soup Lunch: Teachers starting their annual Lenten Soup Lunch tomorrow. A meatless soup and a roll for $2.00. Extra rolls are 50 cents each. All proceeds will be donated to the H20 Water Project.
Go Archangels!! Basketball Regions: Wednesday night both our Lumen girls and boys played very well and won their games!! Thursday, March 1st, the boys play at 8pm vs. Nikolaevsk. Since our girls won last night, they move straight to the Championship game on Friday at 6:30pm to compete for 1st place!!! How exciting!! Come out and cheer on our teams. Both teams have a very good chance on making it to State and if the girls make it to State, it would be the first time a Lumen girls team has made it.

From the Principal:
At the State of the School address on January 29th, I ended the presentation with a “30-Day Challenge.” As we approach the end of February, I renew the challenge to do the following:
-Invite a prospective family to our Open Houses on March 7 and April 5th. We have formal invites in the front office, but you can share the invite on Facebook or encourage prospective families to look at the invite on our website.
-Support the LUMENARY Drive. We are currently at $26,000 towards our goal of $60,000. This annual fund drive reduces our tuition by $800 per student. Please prayerfully consider donating today and encourage friends, families, and co-workers to do the same.
-Sign up to work a shift at the Attic. Thanks to the hard work of our PVO, we have filled many Fridays with volunteers. This has helped us raise an additional $3500 for our school! Sign up for the 5-7pm shift and make it a “date night” with your significant other! (just be sure to go out to dinner or a movie afterward to make it official…)
-Submit a positive review of the school online on Great Schools, K12 Niche, Private School Review, and Google. These websites get large numbers of hits on a daily basis as prospective families look for private school opportunities, so the more positive reviews on our school, the better! We have at least three new reviews already (thanks you parents!). Get yours submitted by Wed, Feb 28th and be entered to win a $50 gift card!

I look forward to seeing everyone at the Parade on Saturday, either as a participant or spectator! Dress warm! The temps are predicted to be in the low 20s with snow!
On Saturday!! Fur Rondy Parade: As an added challenge, the class/grade with the highest percentage of students participating will get a pizza party!
- Who: ALL AVAILABLE LUMEN FAMILIES! Let’s show our Archangel Spirit! Be sure to dress warm (hat, gloves, and boots) and wear your Lumen sweatshirt and sweatpants or your sports team warmup on the outside to show your Lumen pride!
- What: 2018 Fur Rondezvous (“Fur Rondy”) Grand Parade. We will be towing a snowmachine trailer behind Mr. Bauzon’s pick-up truck. Mr. Aaron Hersh (Ben, Class of 2022) has been kind enough to drive as he has experience driving the parade route.
- When: The parade starts at 10:30am on Saturday, but all walkers and riders need to be in the staging area no later than 9:45am!!!!
- Where: Our staging area is at the corner of 8th and C Streets downtown, near the Federal Bldgs and the Quality Suites Historic Downtown hotel. Google Maps is here: https://goo.gl/maps/8m7iMi4bLcT2
Some parking is available at the Geico pay parking lot across from the staging area. However, many roads will be blocked, so you may have to park elsewhere and walk to the staging area. No personal vehicles are allowed into the staging area, not even to drop people off! We will finish in the same location once the parade is over. This is where you will pick up your son or daughter if you are just dropping off and picking up.
- Why: Because we are LUMEN and we are PROUD OF OUR SCHOOL and we want to show the entire Anchorage community our pride!

From the Principal:
What a special Mardi Gras gala on Saturday! It was great seeing everyone “dressed to the nines” and watching our students do a wonderful and professional job serving at the event! Thank you to all who made it a festive family event, from set up to take down.
Our next big event is the Fur Rondy Parade on Saturday, Feb 24th. We are seeking students and parent volunteers to either ride on our trailer or walk alongside handing out candy and Open House invitations to the parade goers. This is a great and fun opportunity to showcase our school to the thousands of people who line the parade route. We hope you can join us on the 24th and turn our school from being the “Best Kept Secret” to the “Most Well Known”!
As you know, we have made some changes to our Theology curriculum this year. I wanted to inform you we will undergo a review process for the 12th grade Human Dignity and Bioethics course as well as the 9-11th grade Principles and Choices supplemental curriculum. If your son or daughter has been a part of these courses this year, he or she will be asked to fill out a survey relating to course content, objectives, scope, and sequencing. This input, as well as all curriculum materials, will be reviewed to provide recommendations towards improving or modifying the courses, if necessary, for the next school year. The Curriculum Review Board will consist of at least one School Board member, the Theology Department Chair, the Dean of Academics, and others as requested. Yesterday, the Catholic bishops of Alaska published a pastoral letter reaffirming the Church’s moral teachings on human life, as well as sexuality, marriage, and religious freedom (more here: http://www.catholicanchor.org/alaska-news/alaska-bishops-reaffirm-moral-teachings-human-life-sexuality-marriage-religious-freedom/), so I feel we are on the right track incorporating these courses/curriculums into our spiritual program here at Lumen. This review is coming at a perfect time to ensure we are staying true to the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) framework for high school curriculum, the Alaskan bishops letter, and Lumen’s mission and Core Values and Philosophy. Our intent is to take the lessons learned from this first year and continually improve the new courses we offer here at Lumen, so I look forward to the recommendations and suggestions of the review board.
Have a great and blessed weekend! Stay true to your Lenten resolutions!

From the Principal:
Last week, we had a fantastic celebration for Catholic Schools Week. Thanks to all who attended the All-Parish Basketball Night on Saturday, and to those who represented our school at St. Benedict’s 10:30am Mass on Sunday! The spirit of our school was alive and present throughout the week, and especially at those final two events.
This week, there is no rest for the weary as our school has continued to be a beehive of activity!! Gala parent and student volunteers are working hard setting up and preparing for this Saturday’s Mardi Gras auction. One of our Catholic social teaching principles is the Dignity of Work. Work is about more than making a living or getting paid; it is a form of participation in the creation made by God. Deuteronomy 14 tells that the Lord blesses our work so that we may share its fruits with others. A lot of hard work has gone into this event, and it is sure to be a wonderful time for our all the members of our faith community. We look forward to seeing everyone Saturday night for the Gala! Thank you volunteers!
We also had about 15 students attend our weekly planning meeting to develop and design a Fur Rondy float for February 24th. Our student design team plans to pull a decorated snowmachine trailer behind a pickup truck. Students will wear Lumen clothing and carry signs to highlight our Mission, Core Values, and some of the extracurricular activities that we offer. We are asking for parents and students to sign up to attend the Fur Rondy Parade to either ride on the trailer or walk alongside handing out candy and Open House invitations to the parade goers. We hope you can join us on the 24th!
Finally, Lent begins next week with Ash Wednesday, February 14th. In the spirit of sacrifice and almsgiving, our Student Government is leading the way to encourage all students to only drink water during Lent. The money students save by not purchasing coffee, soda, or sugary drinks will then be donated to dig water wells in South Sudan and other parts of Africa. Ask your son or daughter about this Lenten Corporal Work of Mercy and perhaps you can participate in the challenge as a family.
Have a wonderful weekend!

From the Principal:
As we finish up Catholic School Week (CSW), thanks to all who attended the State of the School address on Monday evening. Based on the survey feedback, everyone found it informative, fun, and interesting and I look forward to keeping this annual tradition alive next year! Looking into the weekend, a gentle reminder of two final CSW events: the Archdiocesan Parish Basketball Night on Saturday, Feb 3rd from 3-6pm and our Community Mass at Saint Benedict’s on February 4th at 10:30am. We hope you can join us in embracing our Catholic social teaching call to community, family, and participation. As Romans 12:4-8 tells us: “For as in one body we have many parts, and all the parts do not have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ and individually parts of one another.” More information on these community events is below.
Our high school basketball teams have been leading the way recently in sports competitions. Our girls basketball team went undefeated to win the Birchwood Invitational a week ago, which was the first tournament won by a Lumen girls basketball team since 2007! Both the boys and girls teams went on to take second place in a recent tournament last weekend in Nikolaevsk. A special shout out to Class of 2018 senior Maeve Bakic and Class of 2019 junior Nyadeng Puoy who received all tournament girls team honors, while Class of 2021 freshman Lam Puoy was recognized for all tournament boys team honors. Nyadeng also was named tournament MVP for girls. Way to go Archangels!!!
Finally, I would like to recognize our four inductees into our new National Honor Society chapter: Class of 2019 juniors Megan Flaherty and Jaime Martin and Class of 2020 sophomores Jeannie McConnell and Sophia Dupras. In a moving ceremony surrounded by friends and family, Megan, Jaime, Jeannie, and Sophia were recognized and celebrated for their scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Each of them has made a significant impact on others and visibly lived out Lumen’s Core Values of Faith, Family, and Excellence. Well done and congratulations to our new NHS members!

-
Lumen Christi Community Mass at St. Benedict Parish (Sunday, February 4th at 10:30am): As Catholic Schools Week comes to a close, what a better way to celebrate our school than with the parishioners of St. Benedict’s. Our students and staff will participate in the liturgy as altar servers, lectors, extraordinary ministers, gift bearers, and hospitality. This is not a mandatory event, but I am requesting parents and students to attend whether you are Catholic or not. As a ministry of St. Benedict, our school benefits greatly from the generosity, support, and hospitality of the parish. This is our way of showing our deepest appreciation by celebrating the Mass with them.
