Principal’s Update:
WHAT.A.GREAT.WEEK! Our junior high basketball teams continued their season with victories against Anchor Lutheran earlier in the week and will compete in the Alaska Christian Schools Activity Association (ACSAA) tournament starting today through Saturday in our gym. Please come out to support our middle school Archangels and their teammates from 5th and 6th grade from St. Elizabeth’s!
On Wednesday, we held a luncheon and tour for parish priests from Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Andrew’s (Eagle River), St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (SEAS), St. Patrick’s, Holy Cross, and Holy Family Cathedral. The priests started their day with a tour at SEAS and then came over to Lumen to see the K-12 continuum of Catholic education we are blessed to have here in Anchorage. We hope these priests will go back to their parishes and spread the good news about our school.
Today, we are hosting two prospective new students (a 7th grader from Mears and a 10th grader from Service) on a “shadow day.” By shadowing a Lumen student, these days are a great way for potential students to get to know our school, our schedule, and our students and to learn about life as a Lumen Archangel. We pray that these students, as well as another prospective 7th grader who will visit next week, decide to come to Lumen starting in January.
Finally, at least ten 6-person high school age teams from parishes all over Anchorage and Wasilla (including three from Lumen) will converge on the Lumen gym from 6:30-9pm Friday night to participate in the Archdiocese of Anchorage Youth Dodgeball Tournament. Our students are always mentioning they want to have more youth involved in our school community. This event is a means to do that, under the spirit of our faith (and a little healthy competition, of course)! Therefore, I have challenged our students to fill our bleachers Friday night with their spirit and pride. Any Lumen student that shows up to support and cheer on our teams IN LUMEN SPIRIT WEAR will get a free candy or bag of popcorn from the concession stand. Rumor has it the Archdiocese will be bringing pizza as well, so make it a fun, family night and come watch some dodgeball! We hope to see you there!
LUMEN-ary Drive:
LUMEN-ary Drive Update: Good news! We are more than half-way to our goal of $40,000! As of Wednesday, Nov. 29th, we have cash-in-the-door of $20,695. Thank you to all who have supported this important campaign to date. Please remember that a successful LUMEN-ary Drive is critical to our school’s financial stability. Since we did not sell “Gold Cards” this year we’re asking each school family to voluntarily cooperate in raising at least $500 to help balance the school’s budget. While you are not obligated to pay this additional amount, our hope is that you will ask extended family and friends to support Lumen Christi’s mission of offering a “rigorous Catholic education in a Christlike environment.” One of the ways to encourage greater participation in the LUMEN-ary Drive is to have your son/daughter send out a personal note to extended family and friends along with LUMEN-ary Drive information. National ‘best practices” show that extended family members and friends are excited to help support the mission of Catholic education. To date, 29 families have sent a total of 53 personal notecards through the school, and recipients of these personal notecards have responded with a total of $2,600. It’s working! Let’s work together to achieve our goal of raising the $40,000 by Christmas! Thank you!

Be a Santa to a Senior
No, not the senior class, but the seniors in our community! Each year there are many elderly residents in our community for whom the holidays pass without a visit from anyone, let alone a gift. The “Be a Santa to a Senior” organization seeks to change that and would like our help. Simply stop by either of the locations below and pull an “ornament of need” off of the tree. Purchase the gift and return it (unwrapped) by December 10th to the tree where you pulled the ornament from. For more information, visit BeaSantatoaSenior.com or call 907-277-4663. Thank you for going the extra mile for someone in need, in our community.

Principal’s Update:
This past couple of weeks has brought some disturbing news about graffiti and threats within the Anchorage School District. We pray for the students, staff, and parents of those schools. I will reiterate that even though we have a lot going on here at Lumen, the safety and security of our students is my number one priority. This is why we installed an electronic door lock and camera on our front entryway a couple of years ago and why we continue to run fire alarm and lockdown drills on a monthly basis. I, and many of the staff here, receive the “Nixle” information updates from the Anchorage Police Department. As an example of the safety/security assessments we make daily, based on the events and information coming out of ASD, our Dean of Students, Mr. Bauzon, and I made a decision to have our students eat lunch in the school this week instead of walking back and forth across the parking lot to the Parish Hall. As you go into a well-deserved Thanksgiving Break, please know that we work hard to provide a safe and secure environment each and every day so our students can spend their time here learning, growing, and developing in body, mind, and spirit.
Ready for some good news?
-
Our high school girls volleyball team participated in a tournament in Cordova last weekend, traveling to and from on the Alaska state ferry system. Congratulations to Sophia Dupras, Class of 2020, who earned All-Tournament Honors and thanks to the parent volunteers who chaperoned the trip!
-
Last Friday, our 10th grade students took time away from their studies and went on retreat all day, culminating with putting their faith in action by cleaning and stocking shelves at the Catholic Social Services’ Food Pantry.

Thanks to an all-school charity drive, we donated over 600 boxes of stuffing mix on Friday, in time to support the Thanksgiving Blessing Project this week here in Anchorage.
-
Seven prospective families (all potential 7th graders) attended our fall Open House on Nov 8!
-
Thanks to your sharing, and some “boosting,” on Facebook, one of our marketing videos had over 9,500 views. The other had over 7,900 views! The majority of these are views within the Anchorage area. We do not want to be the “best kept secret”!
-
We hosted twenty 6th graders from our sister school, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, last week. The students attended Mass, built spaghetti noodle and marshmallow structures, completed a scavenger hunt which took them to every corner of the school, and ate lunch with our students. We pray that many of these awesome students will become Archangels next fall!

Finally, the Virtue of the Week is BRAVE; the strength to conquer fear while overcoming difficulties and overcoming temptations. For a great and catchy video highlighting the brave actions of so many in reaching out to help and love their neighbor, look here: https://www.sportsleader.org/video/give-a-little-love
Thanks for all your support. From our Lumen family, and my family, to yours, have a blessed and safe Thanksgiving holiday. We are truly thankful for all of God’s graces to our school community and family.

LUMEN-ary Drive:
LUMEN-ary Drive Update: Good news! 30 days into the drive we have pledges of $20,435, so we are just over halfway to our goal of $40,000. This is a great start! Thank you to all who have donated to date and encouraged other family members and friends to support the mission of Lumen Christi. With 100{87587bff62748d853b25c5c00e545c389c2cc3e9e64848ccec5036484113dbfe} participation, our teachers and administrative staff have collectively donated $4,000 of the amount raised so far. We ask that you please continue to “get the word out” to extended family and friends about the LUMEN-ary Drive, either through a personal note or an email along with a copy or attachment of the LUMEN-ary Drive brochure. To date, 22 families have sent one or more notes out (through the school office) and we have received $2,150 from these new supporters. Nine school families have made their contribution so far, so we still have work to do. Please remember that a successful LUMEN-ary Drive is critical to the financial stability of our school. If you have not yet supported this year’s drive, please do so by Thanksgiving, if at all possible. Together we can support our school’s mission of providing a rigorous Catholic education in a Christlike environment.
Archangel Sports Update:
Come out and support our Middle School basketball teams as they take on Anchor Lutheran on Monday, November 26th. Tip off time for the girls is 5p, 6p for boys. Both sets of games will be at Lumen Christi as the teams prepare for the Middle School Basketball conference tournament which will be held at Lumen Christi November 28 – 30. Come cheer on the Archangels!
Student Spotlight:
Our students do amazing things, both on campus and off. We’ll be using this new section of Lumen News to highlight those who have accomplished or contributed something extra over the past week.
Did you know we have several Lumen students who participate in the Rabbit Creek Youth Shotgun League’s fall and spring season? These shotgun shooters compete once a week for 10 weeks, shooting “5-stand.” Wind, rain, snow, and ice, they shoot two rounds of 25-shots at clay pigeons thrown in all different directions. Congrats to Garrett Renfro, Class of 2021, who earned 2nd place honors as a Junior in both the Handicap and Scratch score categories this season. Congrats also to Emily Ross, Class of 2023, who earned 1st place honors as a Sub-Junior in both the Handicap and Scratch score categories. Also participating is Jaydin Dufrane, Class of 2021. Way to represent, Archangels!
Congratulations also go out to John McConnell, Class of 2022, who passed the Bar Exam (with a score of 104 out of a possible 105!) to become the newest member of the Anchorage Youth Court. AYC is a juvenile justice system that empowers students to serve as defense attorneys, prosecutors and judges in real cases involving their peers.

Principal’s Update:
We have been highlighting the accomplishments of many of our student athletes recently, and rightfully so. I love watching our students use their God-given talents on the field, on the court, in the pool, on the mat, and now on our air rifle range in the gym! To enhance our athletics this year, we are working to incorporate the Sports Leader sports ministry program into our school.
At a recent game, one parent approached me and said, “What’s this whole Sports Leader thing? I see the sign in the gym and I’ve heard you mention it before, but I don’t really understand it. [Athlete’s name] never talks about it after practice. What’s happening with it?”
I like these conversations because they are a lens into how well (or, in this case, how poorly) we are “spreading the good news.” One clear lesson is that we can always do more to communicate with our students and our families about the great programs we have to offer here at Lumen.
We are in the initial stages, so I expect questions like the one posed by the parent. As I told our coaches at our August retreat, I am firmly committed to the success of Sports Leader here at Lumen. I believe it can help our students grow closer to Christ through a focus on faith and virtue. Further, I think Sports Leader aligns well with the faith life activities (retreats, charity drives, etc.) and theology curriculum we already have in place. This year, we are doing the following:
-
Every week, our students should learn about a new Virtue either in the classroom or on the court or both. This week’s virtue is HOPE; the strength to hold that your inner longing will be fulfilled. Since the start of the school year, we have talked about SELFLESS, GRATITUDE, IRON-WILL, RESPONSIBILITY, TOUGHNESS, UNITY, WISDOM, ACCOUNTABILITY, DETERMINATION, VISION, DEDICATION, and OTHER-CENTERED.
-
I am also encouraging our coaches and our student athletes to pray before and after every practice and game. Prayer should be a natural part of our day, and sports are no exception.
-
It is important for our teams to attend “sports team Masses” together for the very same reason our weekly school Masses are important–to be a community in the presence of Jesus. The easiest way to do this is to attend Mass at 7:15am in our Chapel of the Archangels.
-
Eventually, during the high school basketball season, we will start to conduct a few of the “jersey ceremonies” unique to Sports Leader. More to follow on these later.
With your help, we will see the positive impact of this sports ministry program in the days, weeks, months, and years to come.
Want proof? Don’t take my word for it. See what Sports Leader has done for Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic in Indiana: https://www.sportsleader.org/video/sportsleader-at-our-lady-of-mount-carmel and Pittsburgh Seton La Salle Catholic in Pennsylvania: https://www.sportsleader.org/video/sportsleader-at-pittsburgh-seton-lasalle. I believe you will be impressed and will see why this is such a great addition to our school. Please share these videos with your son or daughter and anyone else you think might want to know what we are doing here at Lumen.
And, as always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to talk to me at a sporting event, give me a ring, stop me in the hallway, or send me an email. Thanks for your support!

Lu-Mom Kellie Thomson reports “Each and every one of the 19 Lumen Christi students who volunteered their time for the St. Elizabeth Auction did a superior job representing Lumen Christi. It wasn’t an “easy” few hours. I couldn’t have been more proud of them! What an opportunity to show the St. Elizabeth School community the high caliber students who attend Lumen Christi High School. Principal’s Update:
Did you know that we have several Lumen students participating in public high school sports programs? We do! These students attend Lumen Christi during the day and then practice and play their public school sport after school. We have one 9th grader playing on the Dimond High baseball team, one 11th grader playing on the Dimond High softball team, one 9th grader skiing on the Service High ski team, and one 11th grader swimming for the Dimond High swim team. This last student, Class of 2020 junior Mikayla Terry, competed last weekend in the 2018 ASAA/First National Bank Alaska Swim and Dive State Championships held at the Bartlett High pool. Yes, you read that right…the STATE championships! Mikayla had top 8 finishes in the individual girls 50 yard and 100 yard freestyle! And she was member of teams that had a 7th place finish in the girls 200 yard medley relay and 1st place finish in the girls 400 yard freestyle relay! Congrats to our State Champion Mikayla and best of luck to all our student athletes here at Lumen and elsewhere!
We also want to recognize Class of 2019 senior Megan Flaherty who was named as a UA Scholar this week. If she chooses to attend a University of Alaska system school following graduation, Megan will receive a $12,000 four year scholarship to that school. Way to go, Megan!
And finally, we want to congratulate Class of 2019 senior Shon Nagel for being inducted into the Lumen chapter of the National Honor Society on Monday. A nationally recognized program, the National Honor Society emphasizes Character, Leadership, Service and Scholarship. Our members sell coffee and breakfast treats on Monday mornings to raise money to provide birthday bags for young children at Clare House. Be sure to “drop in” to the student room during “drop off” on Mondays to grab a “cup of joe” and support our NHS chapter! Congratulations Shon!

Principal’s Update:
One of the important changes we made this year is expecting our students to “dress up” for our weekly school Mass. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 1324) informs us that “the Eucharist is the source and summit of Christian life.” Because of the extraordinary Eucharistic Celebration which takes place at Mass, we want our students to realize that this day is distinctly and wonderfully different from other school days. Watch Pope Francis describe the Eucharistic Celebration here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEnU12jPVfg. Our Parent/Student Handbook states: “Students will “dress up” on Mass days and for special events. This means they put extra care, concern, and attention into their attire. In addition to the regular student attire, students will wear brown, black, or navy blue, closed toe dress shoes on Mass days and special events i.e. Catholic Schools Week Mass, Community Mass, Gala, etc.” Parents, please ensure our students are fulfilling our school Mass day expectations on Thursdays, unless otherwise announced. Thank you.
Many thanks to everyone who supported our Chili for Charity fundraiser on Wed! Together, we raised $505 for Catholic Charities to provide assistance to those affected by Hurricane Michael. Way to go, Archangels!
Speaking of (fun)draisers, did you know that for the past two years Lumen Christi has participated in the Arthritis Foundation Jingle Bell 5K Run? Our first year we had about 16 team members and raised around $750. Last year, we had 25 team members and raised just over $1200! This year our goal is to have 30 team members (students, staff, parents, alumni, and friends of Lumen) on Team Lumen Christi Archangels and raise $2500 to support the Foundation’s mission of helping over 50 million Americans, young and old, who are afflicted by this painful condition. You can sign up through this link: https://events.arthritis.org/team/lumenarchangels. So far, we have 9 team members and have raised $345!
Please consider joining us for this fun and festive event. The race starts at the UAA Student Union around 11am on Saturday, Dec 8th. You do not have to run 3.1 miles (5 kilometers). You can walk. You can stroll. You can even sign up to “Jingle in your Jammies,” by being a member of our team but hanging out at home instead! Dress up in your favorite holiday costume–reindeer, Santa Claus, etc.–or just tie some jingle bells onto your running or walking shoes and join us in the festivities. We hope you will join our team.
