Thank you for the many ways you support our school. Please remember that tuition you pay only covers 40-percent of the cost of educating your son/daughter. The LUMEN-ary Drive helps us close the gap between tuition and the real cost ($16,500) of educating a student at Lumen. At the moment less than 50-percent of current families have supported this critical annual appeal. Thank you to all who have contributed to this appeal. If you have received a reminder letter thank you for making a donation as your means allow. We are at a critical part of the school year and are striving to keep tuition afforadable for all families. I welcome your comments and concerns. Thank you! Fr. Tom

Principal’s Update:
A special thanks to the 29 Lumen students, a dozen or so younger children and siblings, AND the 25+ parents and adults who showed up on last Saturday’s sunny morning to walk in the Fur Rondy Parade! It was awesome to have so much of our community showing pride in our school. I already have parents and students discussing the need for a bigger float next year! Congratulations to the Class of 2023 (8th grade) who had the highest percentage participation; they will get Moose’s Tooth pizza and root beer for lunch on Monday, March 4th! Way to go 8th Grade Archangels!
As we go into the last few days before our March 5 Open House, please remember that if you bring a prospective family to either of the Open Houses, we will credit $25 towards your SmartTuition balance (up to $100). We also hope you will share our daily Facebook posts with your friends.

We regularly survey our community to seek feedback and comments on how we are doing as a school. We use this data to improve our programs and for our accreditation through AdvancEd. This spring, we are seeking your input on our Catholic identity and how we stack up against the 9 defining characteristics of Catholic schools according to the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. Our staff and students are completing their surveys in class. You can go to the parent link here: https://tinyurl.com/spring2019parent. The survey should take you about 5 minutes to complete. Thank you in advance for your time!
Finally, we wish our boys and girls basketball teams success in the Regions tournament this week. We unveiled our newest championship banner on Monday, held a spirited week of dress up, and sent our teams off with the students and staff lining the hallways high-fiving to the tune of “Eye of the Tiger.” Good luck Archangels and safe travels!

Lumenary Drive Update:
(Yes, it’s still a thing!)
Please remember the critical importance of the LUMEN-ary Drive to the financial stability of our school. At present, approximately 25 school families have contributed approximately $10,000 toward our goal of $40,000. The LUMEN-ary Drive is one of the “Big Five” items outlined by our Principal as key areas of support needed for our school to thrive. Thank you for the ways you have already supported our school. Please remember: Tuition accounts for only 40-percent of the real cost to educate a student at Lumen for one year. If you have not yet made a sacrificial commitment to the LUMEN-ary Drive, please do so before Spring Break kicks off. We need your support as soon as possible. Thank you. – Fr. Tom Lilly

The Boys knocked back a resounding victory over Kodiak on Wednesday night and will tip off against Ninilchik tonight, Thursday, at 7p. The Girl’s fought hard against Ninilchik and came up short by just 3 points Wednesday night, and will play a tough game against Birchwood tonight at 5:30p. Win or lose in that game, the Girls have had an awesome season and never give up! Stand by for “Remind” updates on the status of play!
Student Spotlight:
No doubt – Archangels do amazing things both on campus and off. Congrats to the following student for off-campus excellence last week:
Kateri Everard (7th grade) competed in the New Mexico State Championship Feis and the Feis on the Rio Grande. Kateri placed in most of her dances at these Irish dance competitions including two 1st first place medals, four 2nd place medals, three 3rd place medals, and several 4th and 5th place medals. Congratulations, Kateri, on your dedication and awards!
Toby Agosti (9th grade) recently earned his Boy Scout Life Rank for St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s Troop 104. Additionally, his Anchorage Youth Soccer Club team “Arsenal ’04” placed 3rd in the Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup International Showcase soccer tournament last weekend. Way to go Toby!!
Jack Schroder (9th grade) and his hockey team made it to the All-City Tournament …they were down by one goal but with 1.9 seconds to go, scored, tying the game and sending things into overtime. But a penalty then left only 4 players on Jack’s team on the floor and the other team snuck a goal in. Congrats to Jack and his team for a nail-biting game and hard fought battle for second place!

Principal’s Update:
We had a successful Winter Wonderland Gala last Saturday and a good time was had by all. We raised money for our Fund a Project, for our Tuition Scholarship Fund, and for general operating purposes. Many thanks to all the volunteers who help set up, take down, procure, disburse, serve, decorate, and organize the event, especially Danielle Rybicki, Julie Irving, and Michell Goodwin. We are so very blessed to have great parents here at Lumen. And our students shined through their selfless service to the community as well. Great job everyone!
Last week, I issued a “30-day Challenge.” I’ve taken Gala off but added the Fur Rondy Parade:
-
Invite a prospective family to our Open Houses on March 5 and April 4. NEW REFERRAL PROGRAM: For each new family that you bring to our Open Houses, a $25 credit will be rewarded to your tuition account (maximum credit of $100).
-

Come on out and walk or ride our school Fur Rondy parade float on Saturday, Feb 23rd.
-
Make a commitment as a family to attend morning Mass at 7:15am as available.
Finally, our re-enrollment campaign is underway and overwhelmingly positive. We wish you a restful weekend! God bless!

Archangel Sports Update:
The Junior High Volleyball Team continues their season with a Conference Tournament here at Lumen on Saturday from 8a-1p. Grab your coffee and start your morning off with some volleyball action and cheer the Archangels on!
The Anaktuvuk Pass and Fort Wainwright basketball teams proved to be formidable challengers for both the Boys’ and Girls’ teams last weekend. While neither of the Lumen teams were ultimately successful, team play was AMAZING. The Girls took on Akiachak last night and while the victory went to Akiachak, the Lady Archangels play so well together as a team it’s just a joy to watch. Come check them out tomorrow as they take on Ninilchik at 3:30p and on Saturday at 2p. The Boys’ games will follow both Girls’ games at 5p on Friday & 3:30p on Saturday. Go Archangels!

Principal’s Update:
What an awesome and busy Catholic Schools Week last week! Thanks to all the staff, students, and parents who made the week a successful and exciting one!
We turn our attention this week on the 24th Annual Gala on Saturday. The gym is being decorated, chairs and tables are being set up, and the school is transforming into a Winter Wonderland! We thank all of those working hard to bring it all together and we look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday night!
At last week’s State of the School, I issued a “30-day Challenge.” We could use your assistance in the below areas over the next 30 days:
-
Invite a prospective family to our Open Houses on March 5 and April 4. NEW REFERRAL PROGRAM: For each new family that you bring to our Open Houses, a $25 credit will be rewarded to your tuition account (maximum credit of $100).
-
Attend and support the Gala on Feb 9
-
Support the LUMENARY Drive
-
Sign up to work a Friday shift at the Attic
-
Submit a positive review of the school online on Great Schools, K12 Niche, Private School Review, and Google. Those families that provide reviews will be entered to receive $50 off your tuition!
I’ll add one additional challenge. As we approach Lent (Ash Wednesday is March 6th), perhaps you will consider attending our morning daily Mass at 7:15am as a family. Mass is about 20 minutes long and a great way to start your day! We hope to see you!
Virtue of the Week:
The Sports Leader Virtue of the Week is LEGACY: The strength to hand down a virtuous tradition and memory of your actions. Here is an excellent example of LEGACY: https://www.sportsleader.org/video/gift-singapore-inspiration-drama-short-film

We are begin our planning for our March 5th Mardi Gras Pancake Dinner. Volunteers will be appreciated! Donations of pancake mix, syrup, juice, bacon/sausage, and pancake topping will be appreciated!! Proceeds go to fund Campus Ministry activities and to help a local charity.
Youth Night is held at St. Benedict Church each Wednesday – all high school Lumen students are welcome! Several Theology teachers offer extra credit for Faith events attended outside school hours. Students can check with teachers.

Archangel Sports Update:
Our Junior High Volleyball Team is amazing with their enthusiasm and ‘can-do’ spirit. Their season continues with another “round robin’ tournament at Anchor Lutheran this Friday and a Conference Tournament here at Lumen next Saturday.
Basketball season is in full swing! The Girls travelled to Nenana to play in a tournament last Friday and Saturday and the Boys hosted Point Lay on Saturday here at the school. We had a great turnout from the community with lots of extra Catholic Schools Week attendees to cheer the Boys on to victory that night. Tuesday and Wednesday both teams fought hard against Sand Point and King Cove with ultimate victories being handed to the challengers.
Tonight both teams play against Anaktuvuk Pass at the Wells Fargo Sports Center on the UAA Campus. Girls tip off at 5:30p, Boys at 7p. Friday both teams will take on Fort Wainwright with games at 1:00p and 2:30p, again the Wells Fargo Center.
Next weekend the season returns to the Lumen Gym with games against Ninilchik on Friday at 3:30p (Girls) and 5p (Boys) and Saturday at 2p (Girls) and 3:30(Boys).
Student Spotlight:
Our students do amazing things both on campus and off. Congrats to the following for off-campus excellence:
Kateri Everard (7th grade) who will be traveling to Albuquerque, New Mexico over President’s Day weekend to compete in the New Mexico State Championship Feis and the Feis on the Rio Grande (Irish Dance Competitions.) Good Luck Kateri!
*Parents/Guardians – if your student has done something that deserves “Spotlight” recognition, please let Mrs. Gore at the Front Desk know!

Parent-Teacher Conferences NEXT WEEK
Parent Teacher Conferences are right around the corner. As a reminder (and heads up for new Lumen families), both Thursday 2/14 and Friday, 2/15 will be half days with early dismissal at 12:20p.
Thursday will be a Friday “A” schedule (students attend periods 1-3-5) and Friday will be a Friday “B” schedule (periods 2-4-6.)
Conferences will run from 3p-7p on Thursday and 1p-4p on Friday. They occur on a ‘first-come-first-served’ basis in the Student Room located next to the Office. Parents, if you’re unable to make either date, please email Ms. Gore at the Front Desk (lchs@lumenchristiak.org) who will forward the message on to your student’s teachers so alternate arrangements can be made.

IT’S ON!! We can’t wait to see you here for what promises to be an amazing night. There are a few last items to remember:
*If you have WINE that you promised to bring in, or IRONING that you took home to do, please return those to the Gala office by tomorrow/Friday at noon.
*Students who are working the event on Saturday need to be here no later than 5p, in their uniforms.
