Principal’s Update:
What a great start to our school year! From all-school orientation and opening Mass on Tuesday, to opportunities in advisory to review our school handbook and emergency procedures, to full class days, we are off and running! As I wander through classrooms and the hallways and the gym, there is a wonderful and positive vibe and energy in our school, starting with our brand new 7th graders (“Sevvies”) and continuing through all class levels to our veteran Seniors from the Class of 2020. We are very excited to finally have the school year underway!
Our new cell phone policy is having a visible and notable impact on this vibe and energy. Students aren’t distracted in class; they are focused and engaged. And even better, they are interacting with their fellow Lumen students at lunch and in the hallways and building community!
I encourage you to come out to support our soccer teams in their competitions in the coming days and weeks. Kincaid Park, where most of our games take place, is beautiful this time of year, and a great location to spend an evening together as a family. To build spirit, I have challenged our students to wear their Lumen pride wear, come support our varsity soccer team against Cook Inlet Academy tomorrow night, and attend the free concert in front of the school. In return, any students that do will receive a casual day/dress down day on Monday, August 26! Come cheer on our Archangels!

School Announcements:
Carpooling?:
Do you need help with drop offs or pick ups? Let Ms. Gore in the Front Office know and she’ll put together a list of neighborhood where potential carpooling/ride sharing opportunities might be available.
Uniform Updates:
We’ve heard from several families that Tommy Hilfiger orders are delayed. An email response from them earlier in the week promised that all orders placed through 7/26 were to have been mailed by Friday, 8/9; and all orders placed through 8/2 were to have been shipped by 8/16. If you’re experiencing continued delays, please let Ms. Gore know so she can connect with them again.
Also held up in Tommy delays are new ties. Fortunately all students appear to have at least one at this point, but please make sure your student does not lose/stain/mangle/wrangle/forget/eat their tie as it may take a while to replace. We’ll keep you posted when the new shipment arrives.
If your loyalty lies with our other approved vendor, Lands End, know that they’re having a sale starting next week, and all uniform items are 25% off.
https://www.landsend.com/myschool
Class of 2020:
*Senior sweaters are available to order on-line through our local vendor, Alaska Serigraphics at https://lumenchristi.akcustom.ink/ If you wish to go and try one on for sizing purposes, AK Seri. is located at 1711 Abbott Road and their phone number is 561-2000.
*Senior Photos done yet?! They’re due to Mrs. Spillers on Thursday, October 31st. Get them turned into her as soon as you’ve got them.
Student Spotlight:
Our Archangels do amazing things both on campus, and off. Inaugural shout out to Vaeda Michaelson along with her younger brother Aiden and family friend Allesandra. Together with their families, they conquered the Denali Highway this summer riding from Paxson to Cantwell on bicycles.
Parents – want us to highlight something amazing your student is involved with? Send a note to the Front Office at lchs@lumenchristiak.org and we’ll post it here.
Thanks – have a great rest of week and weekend!

The most important take-away for parents is that Friday will be a 2:30pm dismissal, instead of 12:20pm.
Safe Environment Training:
As a reminder, any parent or guardian who wishes to volunteer at the school must submit background check paperwork and complete an online “Safe Environment” training. Background check paperwork is available in the office and takes less than a minute to fill out. The link to complete the online training can be found here: https://www.archdioceseofanchorage.org/safe-environment/adult-online-training-program/
Student safety is paramount at Lumen, thank you in advance for making sure your paperwork is completed and/or up to date! Note: if you wish to volunteer at the Archangel Attic as a means to completing Family Share Hours, you must submit background check paperwork only, no online training is required. Please let Ms. Gore at the Front Desk know if you have any questions.
School Picture Day:
School Picture day is almost here! School photos will be taken on Tuesday September 3rd. Please send your child in their best uniform – clean, groomed, and polished! Photo request forms will be sent home at the beginning of Week #2. Any questions? E-mail: mspillers@lumenchristiak.org
Senior Portraits:
Senior Portraits are due on Thursday October 31st. Fall is a wonderful time to take photos if you have not gotten around to it yet. Please submit a digital file to mspillers@lumenchristiak.org when you have them completed.

John Paul Von Arx – a Country & Christian Music siger will give a free neighborhood concert at 6p onFriday, August 23rd outside of the school. Free hotdogs and lemonade! https://johnpaulvonarx.com
SIGN-UP & REMIND:
Within a few days you’ll be seeing an email from “Sign Up” and a text message from “Remind” – these are two on-line systems that we use to communicate with parents, besides this weekly newsletter. We hope you don’t feel inundated with information from us, but we’ve found that having multiple ways to communicate has the widest reach across our parent spectrum.
Enjoy these last few days of summer vacation, but don’t forget about coffee and doughnuts in the gym on the first day of school!
