Virtue of the Week: Gratitude
“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” I Thessalonians 5:16-18
Thank you to 7th graders Vincent, Nicholas, Henry, XinMei, Liv and 8th graders Maggie and Divine for taking part in our remote Mass this week.
Students who would like to read and/or serve for our 8a.m. Friday remote Masses, please contact Mrs. Loeffler. When possible, we will schedule siblings to read and serve together in order to keep our students safe in social “bubbles.”
Happy and blessed birthday to Maggie and Mia next week!

This Friday and Saturday, Nov 6 & 7, St. Benedict HS Youth Group is holding a Fall Retreat here at Lumen Christi School. All High School Students are welcome to attend! Information and registration is in the school office. This is a wonderful time for students to come together in prayer and community.

We love to celebrate our kids’ victories! Please let us know when your son or daughter wins an award, performs well in competition or has other special achievements so we can recognize him or her.
-
I am available in the Campus Ministry office (located in the library) for student and parent support. Parents, email or call, and students, drop by any time. If I am in class, leave a note and I will get back to you within 24 hours.
Prayer Spot
Please remember the following in your prayers this week:
For peace and unity in our country
For those experiencing homelessness and poverty as our winter approaches
For comfort to the Tiernan family who grief a loss
For healing of all infected with COVID – 19
All medical workers
If you would like special intentions listed in Lumen News and Prayer Book of Intentions send them directly to Mrs. Loeffler.
Archangel Sports:
Shout out to 11th grader Brenden Gregory who was the QB for Dimond High’s Varsity Football team this season; Brenden just received the “Honorable Mention Award for Football” from the Anchorage School District. We love our agreement that allows our Archangels not just to play, but shine on non-Lumen teams within the public school system. Way to represent on the field, B!
The Girls High School Volleyball team has their first game against Birchwood on Monday, November 9th at 5p. Good luck to our Lady Archangels, it’s been a wacky road to get to this point for sure. We’ll be rootin’ for you.
Co-ed Jr. High Volleyball practice continues to be on hold. STILL. Stupid Covid.
Front Office News:
LUMEN-ary Drive
Donations continue to come in – THANK YOU! To date, 24 Lumen families have contributed a total of $9,370.00. Add in family-of-Lumen families (aunts, uncles, grandparents) and that brings numbers up to 33 donations for a total of $11,910.00. Add in the St. Benedict’s parishioners and school friends and we’re up to 80 donations for a grand total of $24,255.00. This is awesome! The total goal is $50,000 so we’re nearly half-way there.
As parishioners and friends continue to give, and if all Lumen families contributed (our goal is 100% family participation – right now we’re at 30%) we would absolutely reach our goal by Thanksgiving. You can drop off a cash or check donation, or to make it super easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy, just click here: https://www.osvonlinegiving.com/199/DirectDonate/2946 Select an amount that feels right for you, click “Continue” and you’re on your way. Cheers!
Debate 2020-21
The presidential debates may be a thing of the past but Lumen’s Debate Team goes on. On Friday, October 23rd, the team began their 2020-2021 debate season with a twist: the students presented their arguments not face to face, but to a screen. Instead of a buzzing cafeteria full of excited students from area schools, competitors Liam Dupras, Vaeda Michaelson, Jack Murkowski, and Emily Ross met in their virtual team room to prepare their speeches and decompress between rounds during West High’s virtual tournament.
Vaeda and Jack returned to Public Forum debate after representing Lumen Christi at the state debate tournament last season. They made cases for and against the enactment of a Medicare for All Act in the United States. Emily returned as an experienced Lincoln-Douglas debater, making cases for and against compulsory voting in democracies. Liam Dupras also tackled this topic, joining the team to compete in his first Lincoln-Douglas debate.
While the new online format presented challenges, the team found debating online to be every bit as engaging and spirited as in-person debates. “Two pages! I took two pages following that last round!” Emily shouted as she showed her full notebook to the screen. The team will return to the virtual debate stage again for the Chugiak Tournament this weekend, November 6th and 7th.
Water Bottles
Please send your students with their own refillable water bottles. I had a small stash of water in the Office which has been depleted by students (no, this is not a request to have that stash replenished!) We’d much rather have them bring their own bottles to fill and refill at our new fancy pants refilling station in the hallway instead of tossing more plastic bottles in the trash. Don’t forget there are Archangel stickers for sale in the Office (2 for $5) that they can use to decorate their bottles.
Vaping Info
Jr. High parents saw their students come home with information about the dangers of e-cigarettes and vaping earlier this week. High school parents, your students will get the same info when they come back to school. Teen vaping in Alaska is on the rise with 1 in 4 students reporting consistent use. Statistically this means that 22 Lumen students are vaping regularly. Eeeewhhhh. Educate yourself and your student on the dangerous effects of nicotine on the teen brain (addiction, permanent lowering of impulse control and mood disorders, to name a few.) This information was provided to the school free of charge by the State of Alaska Tobacco Prevention & Control program and the Volunteers of America.

Archangel Sports:
Hearty congrats to 9th grader Mia Sperbeck who continues to impress while swimming for Dimond High. In last week’s meet against Service she placed first in the 100 freestyle event (also making a State qualifying time) and also helped her Relay Team cruise to first place in both of their relay events. Way to go Mia!
The Girls High School Volleyball team continues to practice (fully masked) in the evenings with the hopes that someday soon they can play a real game against real opponents.
Co-ed Jr. High Volleyball practice continues to be on hold. Stupid Covid.
Campus News:
LUMEN-ary Drive
By now you’ve received Fr. Tom’s letter requesting your participation in our annual LUMEN-ary Drive. Donations are starting to come in and we couldn’t be more thankful. To date, 22 Lumen families (almost 30% of families) have contributed a total of $8,770. WOOT! Add in St. Benedict’s parishioners and friends of Lumen Christi and we’re up to 68 donations totalling $21,130! Awesome! Remember our goal is 100% family participation so check that box off of your “to-do” list and send in your donation today!
Elections – 2020
Mr. Ross’s Government Class will be conducting a voter registration drive Monday during Advisory, and students who are registered will be able to vote on Tuesday, November 3rd. Have a civics lesson with your kids over the weekend, talk with them about candidates (Presidential and Statewide only, no local candidates) and Ballot Measures 1 & 2. Results from our election will be announced Wednesday morning, we’ll see how closely our student vote resembles that national and state ones!
Note that students will need either their Lumen ID or another valid form of identification to be able to register! If your student had their picture taken in August on picture day, they were issued a Lumen I.D. If they’ve already lost that (like my kids have) and they wish to register and vote, please send them with some other form of I.D. Of course we know who they are and could verify identity without it, but the Government Class would like to make this as official as possible.
26th Annual Mardi Gras Gala & Auction Fundraiser
Online Auction and “Live” Virtual Event, Saturday, February 6th, 2021
Our gala team has been hard at work planning an event appropriate for the times we are in. They recently sent out solicitation letters to over 200 of our past community donors. We know that times may be tough for many of them and the team did their best to send out a compassionate letter. Because there may be fewer community donations however, we need our families more than ever this year! Please consider the following ways you may be able to help:
-
Can you offer a cabin, fishing trip, vacation rental or any type of adventure or experience?
-
Can you donate wine or a dessert? Donating these items can earn you Share Hours! Details here: https://signup.com/go/HbuYQJt
-
Do you own or know of a business that is doing well that might be interested in donating an item, gift certificate, or becoming an Archangel Community Sponsor?
-
Sponsors contributing $250 or more will receive recognition on our school website, in bidding software during our event, and during our “live” virtual event.
-
Sponsors contributing $500 or more will also receive community recognition on the school’s Facebook page to include your ad and a link to your page or website.
Once we see what comes in from the community, the team will put out a more specific ask for items to fill in any gaps we might have this year.
When it comes time – we will need everyone to join us virtually and encourage all your family and friends to attend too! In the meantime, please share any ideas or suggestions you might have with the gala team and let them know if you can help in any way: gala@lumenchristiak.org or 273-1530. Prayers and well wishes for a successful event!
Share Hour Opportunities:
For the past several years, Lumen students have participated in several different “Mail for the Military” programs which send holiday cards out to our service members around the globe. Because of COVID (stupid COVID), many groups who normally participate are NOT able to this year. This means that for groups who CAN, there is a greater need than ever. Please help us fill this need and ensure that the brave men and women who are serving our country are remembered and honored over the holidays!
For every 10 cards that your family completes, you’ll earn one Share Hour. We have standard Christmas cards in the Office that you can take home, fill in and bring back OR there is a simple template below that you can print off, decorate & return to the Office. For more information see the guidelines below. Deadline for completing cards is Friday, November 13, 2020.
Saint Francis House Food Pantry needs 1-2 volunteers to pack food boxes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This is a great volunteer opportunity to do with family or someone in your social ‘bubble.’ SFH follows CDC safety guidelines including wearing masks, social distancing and limiting the amount of people in the warehouse. Contact Katie Gordon at 222-7340 or kgordon@cssalaska.org if you can help.
Yearbook Pics:
There’s still time to submit pictures for yearbook and on’t miss this chance to highlight (or embarrass) your kids by sending those in. Use this link: https://images.jostens.com/415464091 or email them to yearbook@lumenchristiak.org

Important Upcoming Dates:
- Oct 16: TOMORROW – Friday B Schedule with 8am livestream Mass/End of First Quarter
- Oct 21-22: Parent Teacher Conferences, 1-3pm and 4-7pm
- Oct 23: INSERVICE (No School)
Principal’s Update:
I appreciate everyone’s diligence in logging into their classes from home this week. This was not an optimum solution, but from what teachers tell me, and in my own observations, our students transitioned to distance learning with only a few hiccups. Well done Archangels!
Now the really good news! With a positive test rate today of 4.7%, we have been cleared by the Archdiocese of Anchorage Juneau to have our students back in school in person next week. Attached below is the official notification. That said, I look forward to seeing our students on Monday morning for their regular temperature checks (I think I know almost every student’s “normal” temperature by heart at this point). Our status will be ORANGE, with in person classes Monday-Thursday. Friday, Oct 23rd, is a previously scheduled NO SCHOOL INSERVICE day, which means no all-school Mass or classes on that day. So enjoy a longer weekend!
I will sit down with the other school Principals and Pastors and re-examine our current safe return plans to determine if we need to modify them going forward. I will be sure to include you in any discussions of options we might be considering to change/modify what we have in place.
We will put out more information next week about how Parent-Teacher Conferences will work, and Coach Warren will send separate correspondence on athletic activities.
Have a blessed and wonderful weekend!

LUMEN-ary Drive
Hitting mailboxes tomorrow – info about our LUMEN-ary Drive! Yes, it’s back, bigger and better than ever! We’ve got lofty goals but know that together with our fans, friends, families and supporters, we’ll get there! HUGE shout out to those of you who have already contributed – you’re exempt from any further direct solicitation. (Yep, the earlier you contribute, the fewer times Fr. Tom will come a’knockin : )
Mardi Gras Gala & Auction
Our Winter Gala & fundraiser is shaping up to be a virtual event (they’re all the rage in this time of Covid) which has both its positives and negatives. Of course on the negative side, we don’t get to come together and have a fun, fancy night out in support of our school. On the positive side, attendees are no longer limited to people in Anchorage – anyone can attend on line. In order for the event to be engaging and successful tho, we want to have a LARGE online presence, so please help us spread the word. How can you help?!
-
Included below is a graphic you can cut & paste into your social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, etc) or even just cut & paste it into an email and send to all of your contacts!

Principal’s Update:
Hello Lumen Families! A couple of updates for you this week. First, I want to congratulate those students who achieved a 3.0 or above and made the Academic Honor Roll last spring. The list of students is below and certificates will be sent home this week. I would love to do our traditional honors awards assembly and recognize each and every student in front of their peers, but we are simply unable to do so given the circumstances. Please join me in congratulating these students! Well done!
Second, if you have been paying attention to the COVID ACT NOW website, you will see that Anchorage’s Positive Test Rate has creeped up to 2.9%. We will still be in YELLOW status next week, but there may be a possibility that we have to transition to ORANGE if the Test Rate goes over 3%. As a reminder, in ORANGE, our students are in school in person Monday through Thursday, with Friday being an at home day. To facilitate more academic time and to accommodate our new 8am Friday Mass schedule, we made a change to our Friday routine in ORANGE from what was originally published in August. Our new ORANGE Friday A/B schedule will be as follows:
8:00a-8:55a Livestream St. Ben’s Mass via Facebook from home
9:00a-10:00a Period 1/2 (Students log into Google Meet from home)
10:05a-11:05a Period 3/4 (Students log into Google Meet from home)
11:10a-12:10p Period 5/6 (Students log into Google Meet from home)
Our teachers will discuss this with students tomorrow and next week so that if we do have to transition up to ORANGE, your son or daughter will know where to be and when.
Finally, as mentioned in last week’s Principal-Parent Forum, please mark your calendars for our upcoming Parent Teacher Conferences. We look forward to seeing you there! Have a wonderful weekend!

Jr. High Co-ed Volleyball Skill Building starts on Monday October 12th. Practices will be Monday & Wednesday from 1:15-2:30p. Students are welcome to stay after school and eat lunch, outside-weather permitting or inside in the gym, socially distanced! This is a great way for kids to learn the game, build some skills and get some exercise, all while having fun. Please encourage them (or force them, like I do to my kids) to play. Talk to Coach Warren if you’ve got questions. athletics@lumenchristiak.org
Our dual athletes (Archangels who also play for a home zoned public school) continue to impress!
Shout out to 10th grader Mia Sperbeck – Dimond High Swimming – who last weekend at a tournament came in second in her individual event (50 free) and was selected to be in two A-Relays where she helped her team finish first in both! Way to go Mia!!
Catch 11th Brenden Gregory (starting QB for Dimond Lynx football team) play tomorrow/Friday at 7p. No, you can’t watch in person but you can watch him & his team take on the Service High Cougars here: www.nfhsnetwork.com. Way to represent on the field, Brendan.

Mardi Gras Gala & Auction
Thanks to everyone who called into the Gala Meeting last night – lots of great ideas were generated as we think about how to host a successful fundraising event for the school. If you attended any Principal/Parent Forum meetings, send me those hours too. You get one hour for every meeting attended.

Each semester invite parents to come to an all school assembly when we recognize academic achievement and distribute Honor Roll certificates. Yep – you guessed it, cancelled this semester as we limit gathering sizes. A full listing of students who made Honor Roll last spring is shown below – student certificates were distributed this afternoon in Advisory and should be coming home in a manila envelope!

Call for Pics
Hello Lumen Families – My name is Sabrina and I am on the Yearbook team. We are trying to put together a page titled “Fun things during quarantine’ and I am reaching out to request any quarantine photos you have of your student(s). This could mean e-learning as well as getting out and having fun outdoors. We are soliciting your help with photos since so many other activities were, or have been cancelled. Please send them to Yearbook@lumenchristiak.org Thank you so much for your help. The Lumen Christi Yearbook Team
Gala & Auction Fundraiser & Planning Meeting
Every year for the past 25 years the Lumen Christi community has hosted a Gala & Auction as one of our school’s major fundraisers and it’s an integral part of our school’s operating budget. Last year we had nearly 300 guests and raised around $100,000 to support our school & scholarship fund. Our Gala Committee has begun planning for our 26th Gala & Auction and we are looking to all of our school families for ideas and support. Please join us VIRTUALLY next Wednesday, SEPTEMBER 30th @ 7:00 pm. Join by video conference – Web link: https://meet.google.com/sxv-fnkz-scd or by phone: (US) +1 669-223-8711 PIN: 301 998 805#
School Attendance
For those of you who check attendance on PowerSchool, you might notice that there’s a new attendance category – “PV” which is “Present Virtually.” If you call your student in sick or absent in the morning, they will be marked “A” for Absent. If then during the course of the day they call in to attend class, teachers will update attendance to “PV.” This will not only simplify the procedure but also more accurately track attendance on our end.
Bus, Bus, Don’t Block the Bus
We know the parking lot can be a bit chaotic when school gets out, but if you could please give a wide berth to the Archangel Busses at the east end of the parking lot, that would be great. We like to get those loaded and on their way first, having them able to easily navigate the parking lot would be helpful. Thank you!
St. Theresa’s Raisin’ o’ the Green
The annual fundraiser for St. Theresa’s Camp is going virtual this year! See the postcard below for more information, email Yvette Tousignant at yctous@gmail.com with questions, or go to stak2020.ggo.bid to start bidding as early as September 30th.
