Principal’s Update: I missed providing you an update last week because I joined the high school students on overnight Retreat at St. Therese’s camp. It was a wonderfully spiritual event and the students had so many opportunities to connect with each other and to reflect on how to love as Christ loved. Many thanks to our teachers who helped organize and supervise and a special thanks to the parents who helped cook and chaperone. Our newly christened “Campus Ministry Team” of students deserves a shout out since they led their peers in small group spiritual discussion, Mass, prayer, Adoration, and religious activities over the two days. As you enter the school building, be sure to take a moment to look at the ground around the shrine of Mary. Our students final activity was to paint a word on a rock which best captured their Retreat experience. Some of my favorites are: Commitment, Friendship, Courage, Community, and Family. All of these, and many more, were on full display last week and I was privileged to join our students in this experience.
While the high school was on Retreat, our junior high students enjoyed an educational (but rainy) trip to the Alaska Zoo and some time at the bowling alley. They also made sandwiches for Brother Francis Shelter and practiced their artistic talent. Our junior high soccer team also competed in the Alaska Christian Schools Activity Association tournament in Palmer. Although our team lost all three games, their spirits were high and their good sportsmanship showed.
At this week’s Monday assembly, we recognized the hard work (and salesmanship!) of 24 students who sold all of their Gold Cards. Each received a $10 gift card and a Dress Down day (to be announced). Matthew Goodwin received a $50 gift card for selling the most Gold Cards (18), while the 7th graders dined on sub sandwiches on Tuesday for selling the most number of cards by percentage out of all the classes. Overall, the Gold Card sales effort raised just over $5000 for the school! Well done Archangels!
Our tennis season closed out with Sofia Main competing in the Region 3 championships where she took second place after a nearly three hour match against her rival. Way to go Sofia! This Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, our varsity soccer team competes in Kenai at the ASAA tournament, so best of luck as they close out their season.
If you can join us, we will celebrate the Feast of the Archangel Mass on Thursday and recognize the actions of St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael for whom we are honored to have the Archangel as our school mascot.
Thank you for your continued support to the school and to our students and faculty! God Bless You!
Feast of the Archangel: Mass this week will be on Thursday for the Feast of the Archangel. To accommodate this, our school schedule will be slightly different next week.
Wednesday – will follow a Thursday schedule
Thursday – will follow a Wednesday schedule with Mass
Friday – regular Friday A schedule

For 10 years he served as Director of Youth Ministry at St. John Neumann in St. Charles, Illinois. Since 1991 Frank has served as Executive Director of Cultivation Ministries. Principal’s Update:
Based on the responses I received from our students on Tuesday, our Lumen families enjoyed the time off and the beautiful weather over the Labor Day weekend. I know the Seniors and Juniors appreciated the opportunity to go to the Alaska State Fair on the sunny Friday before the weekend started. Many thanks to Jessica Lirette, Gerianne Thorsness, Liz Loeffler, and Sandra Methonen who volunteered to drive our students up to Palmer and back. Thank you all!
The Varsity and Junior High soccer teams continue to work hard at practice and games, with the Varsity team on the road this week to Healy for the Tri-Valley Tournament. Girls volleyball and junior high basketball seasons start soon. Go Archangels!
Please encourage your students to go out this weekend and make one last push to sell their Gold Cards. Money and unsold cards are due back to the school office on Monday, September 12th. Gift cards and other prizes will be awarded to the class/grade and students who sell the most cards, so please make a final effort over the next few days to support this important fundraising event for our school.
On the topic of fundraisers, please also remember that this Sunday’s second collection is the Catholic Schools Special Collection at all the parish Masses in the Archdiocese. All funds collected go directly to support Lumen Christi, SEAS, and the other Catholic schools in the area.
Finally, a personal appeal to parents and students to volunteer to man a table and answer questions about Lumen Christi at the St. Benedict’s Festival of Ministries during the weekend of Sept 17-18. You can sign up at http://signup.com/go/RjJb7Y. We need to fill a few more slots after the Saturday evening and Sunday Masses. This is a great way for parents to earn at least one Share Hour and students to earn at least one community service hour. Students should be in uniform. As a ministry of St. Benedict’s, Lumen receives many blessings from the parish; it is critical that we represent and speak proudly about our school at this event. I hope you can help!
Blessings,
Principal Brian Ross

Principal’s Update:
Thanks to all of you who attended Back to School night last week! The evening was a huge success. The food was delicious, the classroom rotations went very smooth (no parents earned detention for being tardy!), and it was great seeing so many families sharing each others company out on a beautiful and sunny Friday evening.
On Wednesday, we celebrated back to school Mass with Archbishop Schwietz and Deacon Les Maiman. The Seniors organized and participated in the liturgy and set a proud example for the underclassmen and women. Please see below for changes to our future Mass schedule. We hope that you can attend Mass with us this year.
Whether it be talking with our students in the hallway, seeing them in the classroom, or cheering for them on the soccer field, I continue to be impressed with their good behavior, spirit, and energy. This is truly a wonderful school and we are off to a great start!
Blessings,
Principal Brian Ross

Summer is a great opportunity to take great Senior photos at your favorite location. The colors are gorgeous, the leaves are lush and the photographer is not overbooked and has patience. Nothing but good reasons to schedule your Senior photos now to have them ready when the Yearbook team needs them much later in the year. Then you won’t have the nice outdoor display.

Principal’s Update:
What an inspiring first day back to school on Monday! Our students and staff started the year off right in a celebration of Mass with Father Tom, Father Michael, parents, friends, and parishioners of St. Benedict’s. Following Mass, two of our Seniors, Taline Markossian and Ned Kretchik, honoring a Lumen tradition, led their fellow students in a procession and brought the Light of Christ back into the school. Father Tom said a short prayer and then went around the school blessing students, teachers, and our classrooms. Check out our Facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/lumenchristiak/ for photos of this great start to the year!
Another Lumen tradition that I would like to keep alive is Principal’s day with Seniors and Juniors at the Alaska State Fair. I would like to schedule Friday, September 2, for this trip, but I will need some assistance from Junior and Senior parents to help drive and chaperone. Please let me know if you would be willing to assist. We would leave the school around noon and return to Anchorage around 7-8pm.
The Archangels soccer team continues to roll forward this season, with an awesome 4-2 win over Tri-Valley School on August 19th and a disappointing 7-2 loss against Cook Inlet Academy in Kenai on August 20th. This week, the Varsity team plays Holy Rosary on August 23rd, Birchwood Christian School on August 25th, and Cook Inlet Academy on the 27th. Our hard-charging Junior High team has their first game on the 25th against Birchwood. We also have one student, Sofia Main, playing Tennis and proudly representing Lumen! So if you are looking for something to do on seemingly endless rainy August afternoons/evenings, come on out and support Lumen Sports! You can see the sports schedule, highlights, and results online at www.lumenchristiathletics.com. Go Archangels!
For those of you who wonder what happens during “home room” at the start of school, the students and teachers start every morning with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. Teachers also have been using this time to pass morning announcements and to emphasize the proper dress code and uniforms with the students in class. The students have been arriving to school looking sharp and professional, so we appreciate your efforts in this area.
I will also ask students, parents and other Lumen family members to drive carefully when dropping off or picking up. Please adhere to the speed limits (especially along 82nd Avenue) and watch for other vehicles, and most importantly, our students.
You will see the notice below, but I look forward to seeing everyone at Back to School night on Friday, August 26th. Classroom rotations will start at 6pm and a BBQ dinner will be served at 7pm. Come on out and join me, teachers, students, Father Tom, members of the Lumen School Board, and the entire Lumen family on Friday! Those in attendance will receive a Lumen Christi window decal to show off your pride as you drive around Anchorage. Go Lumen! Blessings,
Principal Brian Ross
