Principal’s Update:
Looking towards next week, a few of our students have been invited to attend and sing in the choir for the Installation Mass for our new Archbishop. Seating is very limited, so if you try to attend in person, plan on getting there early and even having to stand. As an alternate option, our Campus Minister, Liz Loeffler, is planning to live stream the Mass in one of our classrooms starting at 2pm on Wednesday, so if you want to avoid the crowds and still celebrate this wonderful event, you are welcome to join us. Students who wish to watch will be dismissed from 6th period. If students or parents need to leave at any point in the Mass (i.e. dismissal at 2:30), we ask that you leave quietly so as to not disrupt others watching. Mrs. Loeffler will live stream the event until completion, which could be 1.5 to 2 hours. We hope you can join us!
As you can see below, Lumen continues to be a very busy school, despite our small size. From volleyball and basketball games to mock elections and Move Up Days for St. Elizabeth Ann Seton 6th graders, we are a school constantly on the move! Thanks to all who participate, volunteer, and assist in all our school activities. God bless all of you!
Tonight: Girls Volleyball Game: Join the girls volleyball team as they compete against Birchwood Christian tonight at 5:30pm.
St. Elizabeth’s 6th Grade Move Up Day: Tomorrow students from St. Elizabeth will join us for the day. They will come to Mass followed by a Q & A session with Fr. Tom and Mr. Ross. They will then tour the school, learn about our athletics program, join our science classes, and then wrap up the day with a gift from Campus Ministry.
JH Basketball Games this Saturday: Our JH girls and boys basketball teams play this Saturday morning against Cordova. Girls play at 8:30am and Boys play at 9:30am.
Mock Election: Lumen Christi will be conducting a “Mock Election” in conjunction with the national, state, and local elections on November 8th. From Tuesday, November 1st to Friday, November 4th, students will be able register to vote in our mock election in the front office with Mrs. Estes. Once a student registers, he or she will receive an official Lumen Christi voter registration card and be eligible to vote in the school’s mock election. On Tuesday, November 8th, we will set up a mock polling place in the library. Students can cast their mock ballot from 7:15am-7:45am and from 2:30pm-3:00pm. Students will only be able to vote if they registered to vote this week and are in possession of their official Lumen Christi voter registration card. Mock election results will be announced at the start of school on Wednesday, November 9th. As a part of the election process, we have also set up an online poll. We encourage our students to take the poll, so that we can compare and contrast mock polling and voting results with actual election day results. The poll will close Friday, November 4th at noon. Our intent is keep this mock election apolitical, so there will be no campaigning in the school for any candidates or issues. We will instead focus on how the voting process works to better inform our students on this important civic responsibility.
Save the Date: The Archdiocese of Anchorage invites you to save the date for the Installation Mass of the fourth Archbishop of Anchorage, the Most Reverend Paul Dennis Etienne, DD, STL.

Save the Date #2: Lumen Christi will be hosting a Fall Open House on Thursday, November 17th from 6-7pm to encourage prospective students to consider Lumen for the spring semester or next year. Early next week, we will be sending out 3-4 invitations per student to hand out to friends, families in your neighborhood or at your church, or passers by. We will also put announcements in parish bulletins and ask Facebook followers to share the invitation. If you know of any families who are unhappy with their public school experience and are looking for something better, please invite them to our Open House or give them our contact information. Word of mouth from current Lumen families is our single best recruiting tool!
1st Lumen Gala Meeting: Our 1st Gala meeting will be on Thursday, November 10th at 6:30pm in the Library. All parents are welcome and encouraged to attend. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and lots of help is needed to make this event a success. Stop by to learn more and see how you can help. Principal’s Update:
This week, our 9-11th graders survived the PSAT test challenge and the Seniors tackled the ASVAB. In the spirit of faith in action and the Corporal Works of Mercy, half of our Junior High students visited the sick and elderly and decorated the Prestige Care Nursing Home in Halloween and fall colors while the other half honored the dead by cleaning over 140 headstones at the Anchorage Cemetery.
If you made it into the school Thursday or Friday, you quickly noticed the hustle and bustle of activity in the gym as we host the “Spike Out” Spiketacular Volleyball Tournament. Thanks to all the parents, friends, and families who have donated their time, talent, and/or treasure by working in the concession stand, selling tickets at the gate, serving as line judges or scorers, or bringing in home cooked meals to host the Hospitality Lounge for coaches and other tournament officials. We are a small school, but we clearly have a big heart! Thank you again!
It was also great seeing and visiting everyone who came in for Parent-Teacher conferences! Combined with service projects and testing, it has been a busy, busy week for our students, families, and faculty, so I hope everyone enjoys the new snow and has a wonderful, blessed, and safe weekend.

Below you will find some additional information:

Principal’s Update: What a blessed and wonderful week! Monday finished up as “just a normal day,” but by early Tuesday morning, we awoke to the Holy Father’s announcement of the appointment of a new Archbishop for Anchorage! By Wednesday, we were celebrating Mass with Archbishop-Elect Paul Etienne (pronounced “H-N”), Deacon Les Maiman, and Father Tom and Father Michael. We presented the new Archbishop some tokens of our appreciation, including a Lumen car window sticker, a Lumen fleece vest, and a framed photo of all our students with our signatures on the matting. Following Mass and a school photo around the altar, we welcomed the new Archbishop into our school for a short visit through the classrooms. The students were focused and engaging as usual, and although Archbishop-Elect Etienne could only stay for about 30 minutes, he was clearly excited about serving the Anchorage Catholic faith community and obviously looking forward to spending more time with our students. The official Installation will occur at 2pm on Wed, Nov 9th, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Co-Cathedral. We are working on a plan to provide an opportunity for as many students to attend as possible, so please mark the date on your calendar. We are also working to schedule a farewell Mass with Archbishop Schwietz in early November, since he has been such a visible presence for our students and a strong supporter of our school.
As noted on our Facebook page, congratulations to Parker Klem, Kaare Helgesen, and Chiamaka Labechi for winning the National Day of Prayer (Sept 9th) poetry competition. Last week, each of them received prize money from me and Father Tom with which they will need to donate to their favorite charity. We appreciate their inspiring contributions! The school hallways are still adorned with student prayers, poetry, posters, articles, artwork and song that tell the story of school wide “Peace Talks.” So take a moment when you stop by and see what our great and creative students put together.
In sports, congratulations to our varsity soccer team who placed 5th in the ASAA tournament over last weekend! Our volleyball team suffered a disappointing loss in their first game of the season against Su-Valley this week, but are working hard to be successful next time.
As we look to the future, please continue to read and watch the Campus Ministry notes below. We are working to bridge the 4 miles between us and St. Elizabeth’s and draw the two schools even closer together. We are organizing weekly Lumen student and parent volunteer opportunities after school on Friday afternoons at St. Elizabeth’s. Kathy Gustafson (Principal of St. Elizabeth’s) and I envision 5-6 Lumen students signing up and volunteering for a couple of hours at St. Elizabeth’s after Friday dismissal each week. Not only will students earn credit towards their Faith in Action requirements while helping out their fellow Catholic school brothers and sisters, but parents can earn Share Hours for volunteering to drive and assisting where necessary. We hope that you would take advantage of these scheduled opportunities to show our faith and put service into action! I hope you have a great rest of the week and a blessed weekend!
