Principal’s Update:

The school has been a beehive of activity in the last few days before finals and the holiday break.  We handed out academic, athletic, and spirit awards on Monday, including the “…And Then Some” award to senior Ned Kretchik.  This award was last presented in 2007 and is given to that student, junior or senior high, who goes above and beyond that expected of Lumen students.  Congratulations to all our award recipients and well done Ned!

Most of our students participated in a very moving Advent Reconciliation Service on Tuesday organized by Mrs. Loeffler.   Junior high students are giving presentations on the Founding Fathers in Mrs. Spillers class and wrapping “Beanie Boxes” for Bean’s Cafe with Mrs. Robertson.  Physical science students in Mr. Palumbo’s (a.k.a. Professor Liberty) class are testing and racing mouse trap cars down the hallway.   The art class with Mrs. Glenn are finishing up their clay designs with some cool ones on display in the front entryway.  Secret Santas are handing out gifts and high schoolers are preparing for the Snowball Dance on Saturday evening.  Thanks to a design developed by senior Natalie Dickhaus, we are sending out over 200 Christmas cards to parents, supporters, and friends of Lumen.  And, once again, our school is hosting a basketball tournament this weekend with teams from across the State, so come on out to volunteer or to support our Lumen Archangels boys and girls basketball teams.  It’s truly a busy time of year!

Thank you to those who filled out the short online survey titled “Survey of Intended Enrollment.”  It is exciting to see that over 98{d4876d85bca45a190b33d6c696456a399841af28eb325342d1f9ba09483f3a19} of our students are planning to return next year and your input will certainly help us with next year’s planning.  Thank you for the great response!

Our 22 members of Team Lumen Christi raised almost $900 for the Arthritis Foundation’s Jingle Bell 5K Run/Walk last Saturday.  It was awesome to see the spirit and cheer of our runners and walkers despite the -2 degree temps!  Way to go Team Lumen!

Snowball Dance:  This Saturday, December 17, 2016 the Lumen Student Government will be hosting a Snowball Dance.  It is semi-formal dress wear and high school only.  The dance is from 8pm to 11:30pm.  The admission is $5.  Some visiting basketball teams from the Lumen tournament are invited so they will be attending as well.

Jidor, Our School Pet:  Mrs. Craig is looking for someone to take care of Jidor, her classroom bunny over Christmas break.  He is very friendly and plenty of food and bedding will be provided.  Please contact the front office or Mrs. Craig at acraig@lumenchristiak.org if you are interested.

2nd Semester Art Class:  Mrs. Glenn is offering art class 2nd Semester and the following art mediums will be covered:

• Watercolor painting
• Set Design:  Design and create set pieces for our Drama’s Spring performance.
• Acrylic Painting
• Free draw day so students can explore and have the freedom to work on their own drawings

2nd Semester Art Class will have the same fee ($355.00) as 1st semester.  This price is based on 10 students:  Less than 10 students, the price will increase.  Please contact the office or Mrs. Brewer at dbrewer@lumenchristiak.org if your student would like to take Art class 2nd semester.

Campus  Ministry

• We are in the third week of Advent the waiting is almost over!
• Tuesday’s Advent Penance Service was peaceful and prayerful. Thank you to everyone who helped and to students for their thoughtful reflection.

• Please consider adopting a child or family for Christmas. Giving Trees are at the church entry ways or halls throughout Anchorage.  Choose a tag off the tree and purchase the gift for a needy child or family.
• Hats, gloves, blankets and hand warmers are needed at our local shelters during this time. As you go through your closets to make room for new Christmas gifts please consider bringing unused and unneeded items to Lumen. Our Student Campus Ministry Team is always collecting and will deliver item to Brother Francis and other local shelters.
• Mr. Klem and Mrs Loeffler are taking the Polar Plunge this Saturday, in support of Alaska Special Olympics.  What a great cause!  The money raised goes to training of athletes. Donations for this charity can be made at specialolympicsalaska.org. We appreciate your sponsorship!
• All students grades 6-8 are invited to St. Benedict’s Junior High youth group on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at 6pm.
• Students who attend their Parish’s Youth group can earn extra points in Theology Classes!
• Our next  Parent Discussion group will Sunday, Jan . 15,  4:00 – 5:45.  Topic to be announced We hope to see your here!
• This Saturday is Junior High Fun Day for the Diocese of Anchorage. Festivities begin at 9 a.m. at the Dimond Center Ice Chalet. First, we’ll have a welcome and will go over some basic expectations for the day (which is partnering with another teen for safety throughout the day and being where you are supposed to be, when you are supposed to be there), then we’ll ice skate, then we’ll bowl, then we’ll grab a quick lunch or may just have to eat on the run to the movie. 54 tickets for a 12:30 p.m. showing of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story at the Dimond Center Regal Cinemas and an additional 40 for a 1 p.m. showing have been reserved. • It is great to see so many new altar servers serving for our school Masses. There is plenty of room for more!  We invite all Catholic students who have never served to be trained here at school.
• Many students have already signed up to volunteer at St. Elizabeth’s school on Fridays after school until  2:30 p.m. You can still make the most of Friday afternoon service time because there is plenty of room for more volunteers!  Students can sign up on the hall bulletin board here at Lumen. Parents are also welcome to email Liz @ eloeffler@lumenchristiak.org or call Lumen’s main office for parent sign up!

Shoparoo:  Shoparoo is an app in which you simply take photos of receipts on your smartphone and submit.  Lumen then earns “Roo Points” which are converted at the end of the year into a donation to the school.  Mrs. Estes and Mrs. Brewer both got this app on their phones and it is super easy and fun to use.  Follow these simple steps after you download the app from either the App Store or on Google Play:

Principal’s Update:

Congratulations to our girls volleyball team who placed 4th at the Regional championships in Soldotna over the weekend and ended the season with a 14-13 winning record.  Natalie Dickhaus, Chiamaka Lebechi, and Madeline Josey made the All-Academic team and Chiamaka made the All-Conference and All-Tournament teams as well.  Way to go ladies!

In Junior High basketball, our boys team won the ACSAA tournament championship for the 4th year in a row.  It was great seeing so many boys and girl athletes on the court representing Lumen Christi, including quite a few 5th and 6th graders from St. Elizabeths.  Nice work, Archangels!

Thanks to the 31 Lumen families who have filled out the short online survey titled “Survey of Intended Enrollment.”  The survey can be found here:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/6W97PLH.  Your survey input will help us with next year’s planning.  We are asking all families to complete the survey by Friday, December 9th.

We have raised over $650 and currently have 21 members for Team Lumen Christi in support of the Arthritis Foundation’s Jingle Bell 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, December 10th.  We are in the top 5 teams in members and Thank you to those who have joined the team and thank you to those who have donated to this worthy cause!  Our team page can be found at http://www.jbr.org/anchorage/teamlumenchristi.  It is not too late to join us!

On a final note, our former PVO President, Gerianne Thorsness, is representing Lumen Christi and St. Benedict Parish at a meeting of the Municipality of Anchorage’s Urban Design Committee on Wednesday, December 14th, at 6:30pm at the Loussac Library. Gerianne has put countless hours into working on a new sign on Jewel Lake Road for both the school and church and this important meeting will determine whether we get a variance to have an LED message board instead of  black and white letters.  The more support we get to the meeting, the better!  Thank you Gerianne for your hard work and dedication!

Gala Meeting Thursday:  All parents are invited to come to this week’s Gala meeting on Thursday, December 8th at 6:30pm in the Library.  Come learn all about our Gala and how you and your family can help make our Gala a success!   One share hour is granted to those who attend.

 Principal’s Update:

As we enter December on the first real snowfall of the year, I continue to be amazed by the spirit and commitment of our students.  Whether it is greeting our students in the morning, observing them in class or on the court, or saying goodbye to them in the afternoon, we see a light in their eyes that inspires us daily.  Thank you for entrusting your son or daughter to our school!

In this time of Advent, we are starting each morning at 7:45 with an all-school prayer service around our Advent wreath in the main entryway.  We invite parents and family members to attend as we collectively gather in prayer and direct our hearts and minds towards the true reason for the season, Jesus Christ.

In the next few days, each family will receive a link to a short online survey titled “Survey of Intended Enrollment.”  Your survey input will help us better understand your intent to remain at Lumen Christi for the next school year (2017-2018) and help us with next year’s planning.  Completion of this survey serves as notification of intended enrollment only and is not considered registration.  Official registration for the 2017-2018 school year will begin during Catholic Schools Week 2017 (Jan 29-Feb 4, 2017).   I hope you will take the time to fill out the three questions on the survey.  Thank you in advance for your time.

UA Scholars Award:  Taline Markossian and Natalie Dickhause are 2017 recipients of the UA Scholars Award.  A big congratulations to both of them.

Sports Department News:  

• Volleyball Regions:  Good luck to our HS volleyball team as they travel to Soldotna for Regions this weekend.  They are currently placed 4th in the Region and we wish them the best in their games and thank them for all their hard work this season.  UPDATE:  We just got word that the girls won their first game against Ninilchik in the Region tournament!  Good job girls!!
• JH Basketball Tournament:  The end of season JH basketball tournament will begin December 1-3 and will be held here at Lumen Christi.  Come out and cheer on our girls and boys teams.  We will also need volunteers for concession stand and admissions to help make this event a success.  Here is the link for the sign up sheet:  http://signup.com/go/qJjohD
• High School Basketball:  Practices for the high school girls and boys teams begin Wednesday, November 30th.  Interested players should turn in their sports paperwork and sports fee to the office.  If you have questions, please contact Coach Billy at athletics@lumenchristiak.org.

Gala News

• Next Gala Meeting:  Our next Gala meeting is December 8th at 6:30pm in the Library.  Please note:  the previously scheduled meetings on December 1st and 15th have been cancelled.
• We are still looking for about 2 more procurement callers. This job starts in December, and you can earn double parent share hours for it!!  Once the letters go out, you simply call the businesses to see if they are willing to donate. Most places just need that friendly voice on the other end of the phone as a reminder to donate to our auction. The more callers we have, the less calls each person will need to make!!
• For those working on Procurement, there will be a meeting on December 8th at 7:30, right after the Gala meeting

Shoparoo:  Shoparoo is an app in which you simply take photos of receipts on your smartphone and submit.  Lumen then earns “Roo Points” which are converted at the end of the year into a donation to the school.  Attached to this email is more information about Shoparoo.  Mrs. Estes and Mrs. Brewer both got this app on their phones and it is super easy and fun to use.  Follow these simple steps after you download the app from either the App Store or on Google Play:

Principal’s Update: In sports (BODY), our teams continue to their seasons with the girls volleyball team suffering a disappointing loss to Birchwood on Monday but coming back for a win against Wasilla Lake on Wednesday.  Our junior high basketball team showed lots of depth of play on Tuesday in a big win over St. John’s Orthodox.  We also want to acknowledge the accomplishments of 9th grader Mikayla Terry who recently competed in the Alaska State Swimming Championships in Juneau.  Mikayla took a 16th place finish in the girls 50 yard freestyle and 11th in the girls 100 yard freestyle.  Way to go Mikayla and our volleyball and basketball Archangels!

In academics (MIND), we look forward to the few remaining weeks of the year and the focus on final exams just before the holiday break.  Our students’ hard work and creativity over the past couple of months adorns and decorates the hallways, including beautiful art projects, mythology artwork, food health posters, and my personal favorite, junior high student Declarations of Independence.  At least one student courageously vowed to rebel against “King Ross and the Staff of the School” while declaring Freedom of Dress!  I encourage you to stop by the school and see what our wonderful students have been doing!

Our faith in action program (SPIRIT) continues to expand as well.  To further lead the efforts, I have created a “Team Lumen Christi” for the Arthritis Foundation’s Jingle Bell 5K Run/Walk here in Anchorage on December 10th.  I’ve challenged our teachers, staff, and our students to consider joining our team to help raise money for a worthy cause or, even better, run or walk with us to show support and put our faith into visible action.  Our team page can be found at http://www.jbr.org/anchorage/teamlumenchristi.  All of the funds raised support the Arthritis Foundation’s battle against the nation’s #1 cause of disability, affecting more than 50 million Americans, including 300,000 children.  I hope you will consider supporting or joining Team Lumen Christi!

Schedule Change Next Week:   On Tuesday, November 22nd, the students will follow a Thursday schedule rather than a normal Tuesday schedule.  This schedule change will not affect parents but may be helpful to be aware of.

Schedule Change Week of December 12th-16th:  We have altered our schedule for the week of December 12th-16th and the changes are highlighted below:

• Monday, December 12th:  Normal Monday schedule

• Tuesday, December 13th:  Normal Tuesday Schedule

• Wednesday, December 14th:  We will follow a Thursday schedule.  Please note:  NO MASS this day.

• Thursday, December 15th:  We will follow a First Friday A Schedule (Mass included).  Please Note:  Early Dismissal this day at 12:35pm

• Friday, December 16th:  We will follow a Friday B schedule with school dismissal at 12:20pm

 We made these changes to provide our students additional time on the 15th and 16th to prepare for final exams the following week.

US Naval Academy Visit:  A midshipman from the US Naval Academy will be at Lumen from 1:45-2:30pm on Tuesday, November 22nd in Ms. Brewer’s class.  All students are invited to attend this informational presentation during 7th hour.

Parent Share Hour Updates:  In the next couple of weeks, Mrs. Estes will be sending home a summary of parent share hours recorded so far.  If you have volunteered but haven’t had the chance to record your hours, just email lchs@lumenchristiak.org and Mrs. Estes will record them for you.  Please include the date, description, and length of volunteer time.

End of Day Pick-Up:  Just a reminder from our Parent/Student Handbook that students must leave the school premises no later than 3pm, unless there are coordinated and supervised after school activities.

1st Gala Meeting Re-Cap:  We got a lot of great ideas and feedback as we start the planning for the event.

• Donor letters will be mailed out to businesses the first week of December.

• We are still looking for a Procurement Chair in Training and a few more procurement callers. This job starts in December, and you can earn double parent share hours for it!!  Once the letters go out, you simply call the businesses to see if they are willing to donate. Most places just need that friendly voice on the other end of the phone as a reminder to donate to our auction. The more callers we have, the less calls each person will need to make!!

LUMENary Drive:  Our LUMENary drive is underway and helps to bridge the gap between the tuition we pay and our fundraisers and what it actually costs to educate each child.  We have raised $22,000 towards our goal of $60,000!  Please consider making your LUMENary donation today and encouraging friends and family to do the same!

Campus Ministry News

• The following seniors are training to be Extraordinary Ministers of Eucharist: Natalie Dickhaus, Gianna Dufrane, Chiebuka Lebechi, Abby McCormick and Jamie Nagel. Please keep them in prayer. Training is next Tuesday, Nov 22 during 7th hour. It’s not too late to join!

• Hobbit Fest Next Wed., November 23rd!  St. Benedict Youth group will be watching The Hobbit extended version and enjoying a potluck dinner. Please join us!!

• Students who attend their Parish’s Youth group can earn extra points in Theology Classes!

• All students grades 6-8 are invited to St. Benedict’s Junior High youth group on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at 6pm. Students who attend their Parish’s Youth group can earn extra points in Theology Classes!

• Calling all altar servers if your son or daughter is an altar server in your parish please encourage him or her to sign up to serve school Masses.  We invite all Catholic students who have never served to be trained here at school.

• Our parent support group last Sunday, November 13,  was well attended. It is great to have a support net of fellow travelers on the Christian parenting journey.  Thank you everyone for the great conversation! Details on our next meeting will be in next week’s Lumen News.

• Many students have already signed up to volunteer at St. Elizabeth’s school on Fridays after school until  2:30 p.m. You can still make the most of Friday afternoon service time because there is plenty of room for more volunteers!  Students can sign up on the hall bulletin board here at Lumen. Parents are also welcome to email Liz @ eloeffler@lumenchristiak.org or call Lumen’s main office for parent sign up!

• Parachutes is an organization that gives youth a safe a place to go and enjoy playing games and they even have people there that will help them with their homework. They need help with gift wrapping the Sears Mall to raise donation money. Following are the dates of the event:
