Principal’s Report 11/07/2014
Dear Lumen Family:
Lumen is a proud supporter of the auction for St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Elementary School. The auction is tomorrow night (Saturday, November 8) at the Marriott Downtown. We hope to see each of you at the event!
Catholic Education Exchange: Lumen has partnered with the Catholic Student Exchange program in order to provide a unique global opportunity for our students, and students from Guatemala. We are looking for a few host families who would be willing to ‘host’ a student in the same grade as their son and/or daughter in the fall of 2015 for about eight weeks. If you are interested, please e-mail jharmon@lumenchristiak.org .
Festival of Angels Bazaar: The Lumen Craft Bazaar is on Saturday, November 15 and there are still volunteers needed. You can find a link to the “Volunteer Spot” below under PVO.
Lumen Christi’s Annual Dessert Auction: It’s time for our annual Dessert Auction. This event is a very fun. The party is low key and relaxed, and everyone is welcome. It’s a night for people to come enjoy good company and raise money for our students at Lumen. The big event is 6 PM on November 22 at the home of Matt and Stacey Heilala. Tickets are $50 per-person, and 100{d4876d85bca45a190b33d6c696456a399841af28eb325342d1f9ba09483f3a19} of all the money collected that night goes to Lumen Christi. You can pick up your ticket at the front desk.
Gun Show: The annual veteran’s gun show is rapidly approaching and lots of volunteers are needed to make this a success!! Please click on the ‘Volunteer Spot ‘link below to volunteer.
Lumen Christi Gala: The planning for our Gala is well underway!! The following are some important jobs that still need to be filled: Coat Check, Student Volunteer Coordinator, Ticket Sales & Publicity, Volunteer Food Coordinator, Gift Basket Chairperson, and 7th Grade Class Project Coordinator. Our current procurement chairperson needs someone to shadow her this year to take over as procurement chairperson next year…this is an important job and a great way to get your volunteer hours done. Please join us at the next Gala meeting which is on Thursday, November 20 at 7 PM.
Student Government: Mrs. Mespelli would like to thank and congratulate two of our sophomore students for attending the Alaska Association of Student Governments (AASG) Fall Conference. One of our students even applied to a 2-year position as the AASG Representative to the Alaska Student Activities Association (ASAA). It took a lot of courage to apply for such a significant position. This was Lumen’s second fall conference delegation and we look forward to participating for many years to come. These conferences provide great opportunities to meet students from all over Alaska and great exposure for Lumen Christi! If you know of any issues affecting our community that may benefit from the stamp of approval of this extremely influential student body please let any Lumen SGA member know so that we may share it at the next conference we attend!

Dear Lumen Family:
It is ‘All Hallows Eve’ and the halls of Lumen are full of happy students, dressed in a variety of costumes. The faculty and staff are also dressed in costumes depicting characters from Star Trek to ‘Cat in the Hat’. The junior high basketball teams took the ferry from Whittier to Cordova for a tournament, while the girls’ volleyball team prepares for a weekend at Su-Valley. The first week in November brings with it All Saints’ Day and our monthly Rosary, along with two Masses (Wednesday and Friday). Before we know it, we’ll be heading out for Thanksgiving Break!
Advanced Science Project: Sponsorship monies are needed for the ASP. These funds will enable the students to complete their research projects. If you would like to make a donation, please contact Mrs. Brewer (dbrewer@lumenchristiak.org) or the front desk.
Advanced Ed Survey: In an effort to improve the school, we are conducting a ‘Parent Survey’. If you have not yet shared your opinions related to the school, please take time to do so: http://www.advanc-ed.org/survey/public/5514163 . Your honest opinions are appreciated and responses to the survey will remain anonymous. The survey will close at 2:30 PM on Friday, November 7.
Lumen Christi’s Annual Dessert Auction: It’s time for our annual Dessert Auction. This event is a very fun Lumen Christi event. The party is low key and relaxed, and we want everyone to feel welcome. It’s a night for people to come enjoy good company and raise money for our students at Lumen, but don’t be bummed if you walk out without a dessert, there are only twelve desserts and the bidding is fierce. This goes out to each and every one of you, we had a great turn out last year, so please come join us for an evening of great people, delicious food, fantastic wine, prizes at the silent auction table, and of course the most AMAZING desserts provide by our very own Lumen parents, teachers, students, alumni, and local bakeries.
The big event is being held 6 PM on November 22, at Matt and Stacey Heilala’s house. Tickets are $50 per-person, and 100{d4876d85bca45a190b33d6c696456a399841af28eb325342d1f9ba09483f3a19} of all the money collected that night goes to the school as all of the food, wine, desserts, and prizes are donated. Dear Lumen Family:
What beautiful fall weather! The days have been so nice, many of the classes held discussions outside in the peaceful setting of God’s creation. This weekend the Archangel Attic will be hosting a special ‘Christmas’ sale. We hear there are many wonderful items, so please stop by to check out what they have for sale. Since the Attic is hosting the sale in the Parish Hall, this Friday students will have Friday lunch at the school (rather than the Parish Hall). Please pack ‘cold’ lunches the students will not have access to the microwaves.

Congratulations to all of the students who received awards, and to the parents who helped with the ceremony and the ice cream social. Lumen is especially proud of Katherine Brown who received commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Program for her exceptional academic performance.
