From the Principal:

Last week, we had a fantastic celebration for Catholic Schools Week.  Thanks to all who attended the All-Parish Basketball Night on Saturday, and to those who represented our school at St. Benedict’s 10:30am Mass on Sunday!  The spirit of our school was alive and present throughout the week, and especially at those final two events.

This week, there is no rest for the weary as our school has continued to be a beehive of activity!!  Gala parent and student volunteers are working hard setting up and preparing for this Saturday’s Mardi Gras auction.  One of our Catholic social teaching principles is the Dignity of Work.  Work is about more than making a living or getting paid; it is a form of participation in the creation made by God.  Deuteronomy 14 tells that the Lord blesses our work so that we may share its fruits with others.  A lot of hard work has gone into this event, and it is sure to be a wonderful time for our all the members of our faith community.  We look forward to seeing everyone Saturday night for the Gala!  Thank you volunteers!

We also had about 15 students attend our weekly planning meeting to develop and design a Fur Rondy float for February 24th.  Our student design team plans to pull a decorated snowmachine trailer behind a pickup truck.  Students will wear Lumen clothing and carry signs to highlight our Mission, Core Values, and some of the extracurricular activities that we offer.  We are asking for parents and students to sign up to attend the Fur Rondy Parade to either ride on the trailer or walk alongside handing out candy and Open House invitations to the parade goers.  We hope you can join us on the 24th!

Finally, Lent begins next week with Ash Wednesday, February 14th.  In the spirit of sacrifice and almsgiving, our Student Government is leading the way to encourage all students to only drink water during Lent. The money students save by not purchasing coffee, soda, or sugary drinks will then be donated to dig water wells in South Sudan and other parts of Africa.   Ask your son or daughter about this Lenten Corporal Work of Mercy and perhaps you can participate in the challenge as a family.

Parent-Teacher Conferences:

• On Thursday, February 15th, we will follow a Friday A schedule with school dismissal at 12:20pm.  Parent teacher conferences will be from 3-7pm

• On Friday, February 16th, we will follow a Friday B schedule with school dismissal at 12:20pm.  Parent teacher conferences will be from 1-4pm

Student Government Announcements:

• Valentine’s Day Dress Up:  On Monday, February 12th, wear at least 50{87587bff62748d853b25c5c00e545c389c2cc3e9e64848ccec5036484113dbfe} of red, white, pink or purple.

• Valentine Candy Grams:  Candy grams will be sold on Monday and Tuesday (the 12 & 13th) during lunch time for $1 each.

• Mardi Gras Dress Up Day:  On Tuesday, February 13th, wear at least 50{87587bff62748d853b25c5c00e545c389c2cc3e9e64848ccec5036484113dbfe} of green, purple, and/or yellow.  Show your Mardi Gras spirit

Fur Rondy Parade:  Lumen is going to be in the Fur Rondy Parade this year!!  We would love to have all of our students join us for the parade on February 24th.  Come show your Lumen Spirit…more details to follow regarding time and where to meet.

Mark Your Calendars! Spring Open Houses:  Please spread the word and invite families you know entering grades 7-12 to come to one of Lumen Christi’s Spring Open Houses.

Mark Your Calendars!  Fat Tuesday Pancake Dinner:  On Tuesday, February 13th Lumen’s Campus Ministry and St. Benedict’s Youth Group will host their 2nd annual Fat Tuesday Pancake Dinner!!

Bell Schedule Adjustment:  Due to Ash Wednesday, the school will attend Mass on Wednesday, February 14th instead of Thursday, February 15th.  Please note the bell schedule changes:

• On Wednesday the 14th, we will follow a “Thursday” schedule.

• On Thursday the 22nd, No Mass so we will follow a “Monday” schedule

African Dinner and Slide Show:  All are invited to an African dinner and slide show at Holy Spirit Retreat Center, 10980 Hillside Drive, on February 13, from 6:00 to 7:30.

• Please park in the area behind the gym if you are helping the night of the Gala.  This will leave space for our guests.  The back door will be unlocked so you won’t have to walk around.

ATTIC FRIDAYS:

• We are in need of help from 3-5 pm and 5-7 pm on Friday, February 16th and many other Fridays in the near future.  Please sign up!  The attic raises over $100,000 a year for our school and Friday evenings are run completely on parent volunteers.    http://signup.com/go/cVMeBzw

• Gala Co-Chair for 2018-2019:  With the O’Connell family moving later this year we will need help in the year to come. Learning this year is a great way to start!

Campus Ministry:  

All are invited to join us for Mass at 7:15 a.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays in our  School Chapel!

• Our senior class has put together almost 200 Blessing Bags for homeless. These bags consist of hand warmers, trail mix, water, and various other items that can bring nutrition and comfort to those in our community who do not have a warm place to lay their heads at night.  If your family would like to take some of these bags to carry with you for when you meet someone in need please come to room 120.  We ask that you not send your students to get these, as opposed to an adult, so we can ensure that students are not putting themselves at risk by distributing these alone.

• Please sign up for service at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School.  Each Friday 4 students are needed to help in classrooms from 12:30-2:30.  Students please sign up in the main hallway.

• Campus Ministry and St. Benedict Youth Group will be holding our second annual Fat Tuesday pancake dinner on Tuesday, February 13.  Proceeds will go to a local charity, the St. Benedict Youth Group and the Lumen Christi Campus Ministry Program. We will appreciate help or donations for the evening.  And of course, please come enjoy a pancake dinner and support our cause! Details to follow.

• Calling all musicians!!!  We are looking for a piano player to play for our school Masses!  You may choose the hymns with which you are most comfortable. Please see Mrs. Loeffler.

• Sign up sheets for Friday service hours at The Archangel Attic can be found on the bulletin board across from the school office. Students please sign up!!

• All eligible students are invited to be trained as altar servers for our school Masses. Interested students please see Mrs. Loeffler.

• If you know of a worthy cause in need of volunteers let us know so we can get the word out!
