Principal’s Update:  Thanks to the many families who attended Back to School night and brought a dish to share for our potluck afterwards.  It was great to see everyone!   Congratulations to our high school and junior high soccer teams for wins over Birchwood Christian Academy on Tuesday!  Go Archangels!

Ever wonder why a Catholic education is important for your child?  Here are five reasons:

Add/Drop Deadline:  Students have until 12:30 on September 1st to make any changes to their schedules.  They should meet with Mrs. Brewer to discuss any possible changes.  You may email her at dbrewer@lumenchristiak.org or schedule a time to meet with her.

Schedule Information for Next Week:

• Monday-No School

• Tuesday-Morning Mass at 7:15am

• Wed-Friday-No Morning Mass due to the Priest convocation

• Thursday-No Mass due to the Priest convocation and students will follow a Monday schedule.

Picture Day:  School picture day will be on the morning of Wednesday, September 6th. Please come dressed in your uniform best. Portrait options for purchase from Fitzgerald Photography were sent home on Monday August 28th. Please return them with payment if you would like to have pictures sent home this year.

Remind:  We will be using Remind this year for communicating announcements in the event of school closures, emergency notifications, and general school reminders.  Mrs. Estes will be adding each parent to Remind so look for a notification from Remind to arrive early sometime next week.  At that time you may customize your settings to receive:  emails, text messages, or app notifications or all of the above.

Substitutes:   We are currently looking to add onto our substitute list.  If you are interested or know someone who would be, please contact the front office for more details.

School Tie Update:  Details previously shared about our school ties have changed.  Parker Uniforms will not be able to add our tie to Lumen’s shopping on their website as originally planned.  We will be ordering them in bulk to sell out of the office like we have previously done.  There will be a longer wait for our order to be processed and fulfilled and I will keep everyone posted.  Thank you so much for your patience as we continue to work out the details.

HS Girls Volleyball:  High school girls volleyball begins Wednesday, September 6th.  Please visit our sports website to see the schedule:  http://lumenchristiathletics.com/  All players will need to have a current physical and sports packets filled out (girls who are currently playing soccer do not have any additional paperwork or physical).  You can access the sports paperwork here:  http://lumenchristiathletics.com/main/filesLinks

Spring Academic Awards Assembly:  Students who earned academic awards for 2nd semester of the 2016-17 school year will be honored during assembly on October 23rd at 2pm in the gym.  All are welcome to join us.

Campus Ministry:

• Seniors will be on retreat this Thursday and Friday, August 31 and September 1.  Please keep them in your prayers.

• All are invited to join us for Mass in our new Archangels Chapel at 7:15 a.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

• We are creating a Lumen Families bulletin board in the main hallway of the school.  Please send family pictures in to Mrs. Loeffler for posting.

• September 21 and 22nd are retreat days for high school students and special activity days for middle school..

  • Middle School students (grades 7 and 8) will remain primarily on campus and High School students (grades 9-12) will be at St. Theresa Camp in Wasilla.

  • For the high school retreat we are in need of parent volunteers to help prepare meals, set up for sessions and clean up during the retreat. Please contact Liz Loeffler, eloeffler@lumenchristiak.org if you can help.

  • The week before the retreat (September 12-15) we can use help in organizing materials for the high school sessions. Please contact Liz Loeffler, eloeffler@lumenchristiak.org if you can help.

  • More information regarding Middle School activities will follow; I am sure Mrs. Brewer and Mr. Bauzon will need help with the Middle Schoolers also!

• Service Project Opportunity: “Trick or Treat in the Heat” is a neighborhood-wide fundraiser that allows kids to trick-or-treat early, without cold weather to encumber their costume-wearing. Proceeds go to Ronald McDonald House, Make A Wish Foundation, and Hospice of Anchorage. The event takes place Sunday, September 10 at the end of Yukon Charlie Loop,  from 5 to 7 PM.

  • The following student volunteers are needed:

  • Saturday, September 9: 4 students to help prep (contact Erica Dufrane for time)

  • Sunday, September 10:  5-10 students to help (4:30 – 7:00 p.m.) with making cotton candy, set up, tear down, marking wristbands, patrolling areas and helping with young children.

  • Please contact Erica Dufrane, (907) 602-1795,  if your son or daughter would like to volunteer.

• Keep an eye on Campus Ministry News for upcoming Service opportunities and if you know of a worthy cause in need of volunteers let us know so we can get the word out!

• We are looking forward to a year filled with many blessings!

PVO News:  It was great to see so many parents at Back to School Night. We have had a great start to the school year and we are excited to have Mary Gore as Vice President of our PVO- thank you Mary!

PVO MEETING:  Our first PVO Meeting of the year will be Tuesday, September 12th at 7pm. Please consider attending!

ATTIC FRIDAYS:  Our sign up for extended hours on Fridays at the Attic are now online for the fall.  Please look at the schedule and see if there is time you can help.  Below are few particular areas we need filled.

• We would like to get consistent helpers on the 2nd and 3rd Fridays of each month.  If you can commit to helping every 2nd or 3rd Friday, please sign up online or contact Danielle.

• We need Student Supervisors on Fridays from 12:30 to 3 pm to oversee up to 4 students while they complete community service hours at the Attic.  Anyone that signs up for these spots should have a current background check and Safe & Sacred.

• We would also like to have an Attic Friday Coordinator.  This person would check the sign up spots each week we have extended hours, make reminder calls to helpers that are signed up, remind the Attic to put out our Friday sign, and let PVO know if we need to send out a message to recruit more volunteers for that week.  This should not take more than an hour a week that we have extended Friday hours, can be done from home, and count as fundraising share hours!

Gold Cards:  Money from Gold Card sales are due back into the front office by September 8th.  If you need additional time to finish selling your Gold Cards, please let the office know.

Yearbook:  Did you forget to order a yearbook at registration?  It’s not too late!!  This Friday (September 1st) is the last day for our early-bird pricing! You can order anytime throughout the year; however, right now the yearbook is only $65 and includes the student’s name on the cover.  After September 1st, the price will increase to $70 and the name will no longer be an option on the cover.  Please see Mrs. Estes if you’d like to purchase a yearbook.

Gently Used Uniforms & Lumen Spirit Wear:  If you are looking for gently used uniform items, please visit the Archangel Attic.  For gently used uniforms with our “Lumen Christi” logo or for Lumen Spirit Wear, please see Mrs. Estes at the office.  FYI:  This week we received several gently used LCHS Sweaters and a couple plaid skirts so please stop by the office if you are interested in taking a look.

Scrip:  Have you heard of Scrip fundraising yet?  This is a great way to help Lumen raise funds while you do your everyday shopping and gift giving.  Please see Mrs. Estes with any questions you may have.  In the meantime, visit shopwithscrip.com to learn more.  After visiting shopwithscrip.com and you’d like to set up your account, please call Mrs. Estes for Lumen Christi’s enrollment code.  Our first order deadline of the year will be on Friday, September 15th at 1pm.

Fred Meyer Community Rewards:  Please take a moment to register your Fred Meyer card so that Lumen Christi can receive rewards from your shopping, a super easy way to help Lumen raise funds.  If you have already registered your card, you may want to check to see if it needs to be renewed.  Please click on this link and follow the steps:  https://www.fredmeyer.com/topic/community-rewards-4

Box Tops:  Lumen collects box tops so be sure to bring them into the school.  There is a little collection box just outside the front office.

Shop A Roo:  Shoparoo is an app in which you simply take photos of receipts on your smartphone and submit.  Lumen then earns “Roo Points” which are converted at the end of the year into a donation to the school.  Follow these simple steps after you download the app from either the App Store or on Google Play:

1. SHOP:  Shop for any product, at any store.

2. SNAP:  Take a picture of your receipt.

3. EARN:  Earn cash donations & sweepstakes entries

Amazon Smile:  Do you regularly shop on Amazon?  Consider logging into your Amazon account through smile.amazon.com and choose Lumen Christi as the organization that you’d wish to receive benefits from your orders.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School Auction:  Our 34th Annual Auction “Oui, Oui, Paris” is Saturday, November 11, 2017 at the Anchorage Marriott Downtown starting at 5:00 pm.  Tickets to attend the event are available at the auction office inside St. Elizabeth Ann Seton school.  We are looking for donations of new items, basket items, and artwork.  Donations can be dropped off at the school or picked up at your convenience. We also have advertising space available for our purchase in our auction booklet. Winter Weather Reminder:   Just a reminder that as winter approaches, so does the possibility for school closures.  If the Anchorage School District (ASD) cancels school, so does Lumen Christi.  Sometimes ASD will close some schools for weather conditions but not all schools, please listen to the radio or check ASD’s website. If Sand Lake and/or Dimond cancels school, then so will Lumen Christi.
